I’ll be spending my next winter in a rustic cabin snowed in the mountains for 4-5 months.

This is my dream. I’ll be the winter caretaker snowed in from the world keeping an eye on a resort. I’m working on my list of what I’ll need, especially my food prep. I’ve got propane for heat and cooking but also a winters worth of firewood and cast iron. Got firearms, bear spray etc. There is limited charging from solar that’s basically good for phone charging. There is a small deep freezer that I’m packing exclusively with meat. I have made my own backpacking meals in the past so I’m going to try to make that 1/4th of my meals. Canned food, root veggies, meds, water filter..This is going to be a real test of my wilderness skills. I thought I would ask the prepping community: if you were going to spend the winter completely alone, snowed-in staying in a cabin for 4-5 months, what would you bring?
twentytwothumbs@reddit
Vitamin D, heated blanket, books, shearling slippers, free weights and a workout routine. Basically I would try to start a daily routine and stick to it for mentally health purposes. Maybe start making sourdough bread or some kind of hobby. Maybe enroll in a math course or two and learn something
AdFeeling8333@reddit
Good advice.
Workout routine for sure. Body weight or some dumb bells.
Push ups, air squats, step ups.
I’d make a goal of being able to do 1000 of each in one day before I leave.
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
No electricity. There is propane but it’s got to last all winter so firewood is my go to. I won’t have refrigeration but there is a cold off set room in the cabin that will have to do. I have done sourdough before and I don’t think I have the right temp and storage to make that work but what about basic bread with flour and yeast? I could do that in cast iron I’m thinking.
humptydumptyfrumpty@reddit
If this is so remote, why do they want it occupied at all? I'd think if you're in a rustic cabin where is the resort you are maintaining or watching over ? Couldn't you stay there with more amenities?
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
Sometimes the bears wake up in winter and go at the buildings. I’m also WFR so that makes my presence a good thing.
arlo-kirby@reddit
But if no one is there at all, why is a WFR necessary?
humptydumptyfrumpty@reddit
Wfr?

You can do loaves of bread in a dutch oven or flat bread in a pan. I've done pizza in a iron skillet but that involved a broiler.
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
I’ve done pizza in the Dutch oven. It’s pretty good. Which brings me to cheese. No room for cheese in the freezer, but in Europe don’t they age giant wheels of cheese in wax? They might keep all that time in the cold room. I have no idea where to buy those either.
kennerly@reddit
Get some cookbooks. Baking bread is fun and rewarding. You should be able to do sourdough as long as your room temp is above 70.
hectorxander@reddit
Sourdough is not special yeast, you keep a mothers load of it, mix with new and then add new to the old, it goes sour on its own, but you do not need to use new yeast.
Bring some alcohol yeast and buckets too.
bc2zb@reddit
Sourdough will work at pretty much any temperature. I frequently do cold (refrigerator) bulk ferments for my sourdough.

Lubenator@reddit
Communications devices.
I would think your biggest issue on this property would be a severe weather event or accidental injury.
If things go south, it's good to be prepared with supplies and a plan.
If you need urgent help, how will you get it?
Look into what comms may be best for your situation.
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
I have an active inreach/garmin from backpacking- plus there is actually limited phone reception from ATT. I finished a trial run up there a little while ago and navigating injury was at the forefront of my mind.
srachina@reddit
Get a Starlink.
PhantomNomad@reddit
I would consider getting my ham radio license. If you have the power for it it's worth it. Not only does it let you keep in voice contact and emergencies, it can really help break up the boredom. Could also bring a bunch of morse code training apps/videos/podcasts and learn that. If you have hours of nothing else do to then learning a new skill would be good.
captaindomon@reddit
You could consider a Starlink Mini, depending on your available funds. Would also be great for entertainment.
SSguy7891@reddit

Texasscot56@reddit
No electricity? How do you keep things charged?
Accurate-Map1319@reddit
Just keep in mind…. During snow storms and after heavy snowfall, cell reception depletes. So if the cell reception is weak to begin with, it may completely go away during those conditions.
Royal_Assignment9054@reddit
I was about to say this. I would take a first aid class if you have not done so yet, bring extensive medicine and first aid supplies. An InReach satellite communicator. Request a Starlink. And also, if you are interested, you could use the time to study for your ham license(s). You might even be able to take the exam via Zoom (some radio clubs offer this).
Alaskanarrowusa@reddit
Ensure your cabin is well-equipped for heating and prep your body with whisky and rum. Having enough firewood is crucial for warmth too so make sure your fireplace or wood stove is functional and safe. Pack a first aid kit, bear spray, and a multi-tool.
LAYERING is key in winter so pack thermal base layers, waterproof outer layers, insulated jackets, warm socks, gloves, and a good hat. 30 Essentials you Might Need for Winter will be helpful too.
Since I’ll be isolated for extended periods I’d consider bringing books, games, or hobbies to keep myself entertained. A journal can be nice too.
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
I’m thinking 2 cords of wood or is that too much?
Shilo788@reddit
Not enough maybe
OtherwiseAlbatross14@reddit
Yeah if I'm going to be snowed in for 5 months, wood is one of the top things I'd want to way overestimate on than risk underestimating.

Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
I have more questions: 1. Has anybody done a root cellar? There is a mud room type part of the cabin that is super cold and I am thinking of using that. 2. If you water glass eggs are they like regular eggs when you go to use them? Can you eat them over easy? I really want to water glass eggs now. 3. Cheese. If I bought the kind of cheese wheels that are in wax wheels, I think they might last all winter. Any cheese experts want to weigh in?
Adorable_Dust3799@reddit
Id bring jigsaw puzzles, a generator to run for maybe 30 minutes a day cuz I'd also bring my starlink. Years of staying home with babies had taught me i need some adult interaction or my brain gets wonky. I have a refurb kindle paper-white i got for 50 bucks that holds hundreds of e- books, and I'd get a backup cuz otherwise I'd break it. And a jackery solar generator. Make sure you get sunlight. my son was on graveyard shifts and decided to experiment with sleeping during daylight (as opposed to early to mid day or midday to late) and he said it did things to his brain. And skin. Said it was interesting and he'll never do it again. You need both bright light and sunlight at least sometimes, at least if you're used to it. Prep for a broken or injured arm or leg. If there's any way you can have a plant, even herbs, inside do so. Fresh green anything is huge mentally. Especially scented, like basil. Sprouts too.
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
I’ve done the mason jar sprouts before! That will definitely happen bc I make those a lot and a good source of b vitamins. Saurkraut and Kim chee for fiber and probiotics. Someone mentioned canned mandarins for vitamin C. Also there’s that thing lol boiling pine needles for vitamin c though I bet it tastes like ass lol. I’ll probably try anyway.

Stupid question but, what do you do with all the trash? Bury it?
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
The guy before me actually dug a pit toilet. I’m not doing that. I am leaning to a composting toilet and a winters worth of sawdust. I’m going to try to minimize my trash as much as I can. Any packaging that can be burned also makes good kindling. There’s kind of a storage area where I could keep non burnable trash till spring (basically the plastic).
Fantastic-Spend4859@reddit
Phone charger? So you have phone service???? Meh. You are fine with whatever.n You can call for help.
If no service, Get an InReach. It is like a satellite texting phone. It's slow, but it works. Saved my life before and will absolutely save our sanity, but guessing by your post that you have actual phone service??? If you have phone service, you truly are not testing your wilderness skills (sorry).
Why bring a freezer???? Just put your stuff outside and let it freeze. Once it is frozen, there is no odor so predators will not come after it.
I am thinking you need to make 100% of your meals? Make a weekly meal plan, then buy what you need for that.
Canned food is HEAVY. Focus more on lighter, pantry items. Pasta, cereal, grains, dried fruit. Cans would be treats.
Snow shovel.
Axe...and learn how to actually cut wood (not split, cut). Is there water around? Axe can give you access to fresh water and also fishing holes. If fishing is an option, bring some hooks, line, learn the difference between fishing and a trot line.
Always have three ways to start a fire on your physical body. Matches, lighter, striker. Learn to use that striker before you go. Actually light some fires with it, then realize you need cotton balls covered in vaseline. Put them in a ziploc. Keep that ziploc with your striker.
Learn how to set snares. Learn how to use those firearms to hunt winter game.
You are bringing a hillbilly dog??? Ok. Sorry. My experiences are waaaay over the top from yours.
Disregard and enjoy your time.
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
My hillbilly mountain dog lol. I was up there with my dog a week 1/2 ago and somebody had come up and was trying to break into the cabin. I confronted the guy and my dog went ballistic, mohawk etc but stayed under my control. So the guy takes off and leaves, and my dog literally took off ready to tear the tires off his truck. That’s how my dog got his most recent nickname.

MozzieKiller@reddit
Aka, not a Spot or In-Reach. Microfix or equivalent.
sea_relish@reddit
In-reach is completely okay to use. Sure the ResQLink is nice that it has a disconnected battery to increase storage life. But a GPSMAP 67i can prevent most emergencies in the first place. Batteries can be recharged with a lightweight solar panel.
MozzieKiller@reddit
That’s a lot of things to remember to keep it battle ready. It’s your life, but I’m going with the device that does one thing and does it well, with one button to push. I could probably activate it with my chin if I had to.
sea_relish@reddit
There is large SOS button on the side, and you can also use to to send/receive text/emails on top of using it to for navigation. It’d be nice to say hi to love ones and friends once in a while.
Im sure you keep up with charging your smartphone, and knowing to dial 911 in an emergency. And that’s plenty more difficult than a 67i (lift tab, push button).
MozzieKiller@reddit
I guess I’m thinking more of a backcountry trip, like the BWCA, for example. When I go in, I power my phone off. I have no way to charge it. Yeah, I turn it on here and there to take a photo or look up a bird call on Merlin. I go out there to disconnect, and not to check in with folks back at home. If I have an emergency, I am confident I have a device that is dead simple to activate and fully charged. I’ve owned two, the first one I got about 18 years ago. Luckily, I’ve never had to use either one.

Solar power is limited in the winter here at least. We get 8 weeks of almost zero sun.

4-5 months worth of books for me is a crap ton of books. They make Thermo electric pots that make electricity sitting on a stove. All sorts of ways to make power.
hectorxander@reddit
Wow, that is cool about the Thermal electric pot, I want one. My place in the country is heavily forested and the power does go out pluses super expensive, I do maple syrup on Wood-Fired boilers in the late winter up north here so it would be cool to have one of those out in the shed I am building to be able to blast some music and such.

Any chance that you can do a two week trial beforehand? I worked at a remote field site in the rain forest and it took a couple of months of 1 week off, three weeks on to fully dial in my packing list.
I realized that I needed more variety in my breakfasts, and more fruits and vegetables, including canned ones for every day after the fresh supply was gone. I needed a storage container for leftovers.
On my down time, I read countless books and took up sketching and watercolor painting; plan to bring hobby items.

Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
Mostly food questions and winter gear questions. I did pretty good with what I had. Meal planning for a long stay is a lot more involved. Vitamin C for example- I would rather figure out a stable winter food for that than take a vitamin.
ElleAnn42@reddit
Canned mandarins are pretty good. Dried apricots, prunes, dried blueberries, and dried figs are all decent for vitamin c.

My brother does this. He lives in the middle of Yellowstone park in employee housing (he's a park ranger there).
Every year in late September/Early October, he makes multiple trips to Bozeman to go to the Costco and Walmart and he buys 6 months worth of stuff.
Because it's a roughly 2 hour drive back to his home on a good day, he has to bring multiple coolers with him for the refrigerated and frozen goods, and he buys several bags of ice to keep them cool during the trip back into the park.
The reason he does this is that the Park Service does not plow the interior roads into the park, they just groom them by running a ski slope grooming machine on them, so once the snows come the only way for him to get to his car (parked at the entrance of the park) is via snowmobile, and because the groomed roads are easier for bison to walk on than the deep snow, often there is a "traffic jam" on the narrower parts (especially roads on cliffs). You've got to wait for them to move on before you can go, and because you're on a snowmobile not in a vehicle, you really, really don't want to piss them off.
If he runs out of something in the middle of winter, it's a 45 minute - 1 hour snowmobile ride in weather that averages around 0 degrees Fahrenheit (and can be much colder) to get to his car, then an hour and a half drive if the roads are good to Bozeman. Even if he decides to shop at the crappy little supermarket in Livingston*, it's at least an hour's drive. This is why he ends up buying like 6 or 7 lbs of bacon in one shot.
Then once he's done, he's got to do the entire thing in reverse to get back to his apartment in employee housing. And because very few people "winter over" in the interior of the park, it's not like you can go borrow a cup of sugar from a neighbor.
So my advice is that you remember that you're going to need 4 to 6 months of not just food, but also things like toilet paper, paper towels, and all of the other non-food items that you're going to use up. Soap. Laundry detergent. Toothpaste. Dish detergent. Deodorant (if you don't like your own smell). Many of these items are bulky when you buy a lot of them. So plan for that when you're doing your shopping.
^(*I've been there. It's OK for a dinky little small town supermarket, but the prices are high (naturally), the selection is limited, and everything seemed to be close to its sell by date.)
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
Yep very similar to my gig. My boss is reimbursing me but I have to figure out how much of everything to buy all at once. Also I want better winter gear.
Speck72@reddit
As someone who grew up in a cabin in the middle of nowhere in Alaska, and who has been on plenty of trips dropped off in the middle of nowhere where help ISN'T coming even if needed, let alone having an ability to signal for help, I'll approach this from a different side.
What is your plan when something goes wrong?
I get it, I'm a prepper too and I love planning the packing lists, the food needed per day, the menu, the gear, etc. but as someone who is about to be "out there", what's the gameplan when something goes south? You slip while cutting something and gash your hand open, trip and fall in the hall and pass out, whatever the case may be. Do you have any "SOS" capability? Cell signal? Internet? Garmin in reach?
That said, if canned goods are an option the quality is much better than dehydrated / freeze dried. If you like fruits, a can of grapefruit or pears is one hell of a morale boost to the tastebuds after a few weeks of tinned food.
Stock what you like to eat. If I suggest corned beef hash cans, chorizo, and frozen liquid egg, that's no good if you don't like those things.
Stock what you like or want to do. Sketch book, some pencils or other art media. Journal, write things down.
Report back afterwards!
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
Can you use the frozen liquid egg in like some cornbread mix etc?
account_not_valid@reddit
You can get powdered egg or egg replacement too. Shelf storage, so not reliant on being kept frozen. Works well in baked goods, pancakes etc.
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)

Speck72@reddit
Liquid eggs do everything normal eggs do except for cooking over easy! They freeze really well. If you are going to buy them for storing for months you might consider opting for the smaller cartons. You might pay a few bucks more BUT then you are only unthawing a smaller portion at a time.

GayInAK@reddit
This.
But I'd bring my entire library. Also snowshoes/xc skis, 50# bags of flour/rice/beans, and a Lifestraw. Two of all your essentials, especially things like socks, gloves, boots, caps, lined jeans, etc.
deltronethirty@reddit
Good corduroy are underrated. Light rain beads and bounces off. Good in snow. Get them soaked, and you're fucked. They dry quickly, though.
GayInAK@reddit
That’ll work! I also have several pairs of lined Carhartts that I wear over fleece leggings when it gets below -10.
ThePotatographer@reddit
Y'all need to stop recommending lifestraws, they're terrible. Especially in a situation like OP is in where you can afford the luxury of weight and time. Just get a proper gravity filter or even a sawyer squeeze with CNOC bags.

Toilet paper and tissues.
Pounds of dehydrated veggies.
Bouillon
Coffee/tea/water flavor. Sometimes you just get tired of water.
Powdered milk.
Protein powder.
A hatchet. I read this book once and...lol
A lightweight, waterproof tarp.
A Kindle. Preferably a paperwhite. They hold a charge for aeons, and they're a lot lighter than the fire tablets if you're holding it to read for a long time.
A lot of paper and pens. Journal while you're there. You might even find you have a book in ya!
You said you have meds in mind, but don't forget Ibuprofen, acetaminophen, laxatives, loperamide, antacids, Pepto...and knowledge to know what does what.
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
The freezer is on propane. So I was thinking about meat. Some organ meat, regular meat , and at least a couple of roasts. Because the propane is a finite source, I’m going to rely on cast iron and coals as much as possible. I already tried it for a bit yup there and the cooking hearth literally heated up your space. It was awesome.
NikkeiReigns@reddit
I'd suggest cutting those roasts and larger cuts of meat in smaller portions and vacuum sealing them before you freeze them. It will not take as long to thaw and will take less time to cook.
Vacuum sealing and washing the packets off before you freeze them will keep any smell from leaking out in case you have to store it outside for any reason, like if you run out of propane or the freezer breaks. If it's cold enough, you can take the freezer outside and pack it in the snow. Or use that lightweight waterproof tarp I mentioned earlier.
I can't stress enough that I think you should dehydrate some food. Even if it's an emergency stash you won't eat unless you have to. If you do wander out in the snow you will burn calories like crazy and might need to eat more than you expect. Or the opposite might be true if you hunker down and only go out to the outhouse.
Like so many others have said here, I am envious of this opportunity you have.

Personally I'm not one to use stuff like weed or alcohol when I'm away from medical. To many things can go wrong in an altered state. Sure I would probably still bring a few bottles of whiskey for the occasional drink. But then again I'm not a big drinker normally. I would bring vodka more for a disinfectant then for drinking.
Katie-MacDonut@reddit
Ok you have the culinary basics but also think of stuff so you can switch things up like cooking oils, spices, bullion, etc. You will probably want something sweet, too. Stuff to do that doesn't take up a ton of space and isn't heavy. Have you thought of taking up knitting or crochet, maybe? An e-reader pre loaded with books and a solar charger? A source of music would be pretty cool. I'd also consider putting together a toolbox for yourself.

Steam generator on top of the wood stove.
PhantomNomad@reddit
I would have to find a way to generate power from stuff around me. Steam generator with lots of snow around sounds like a good idea. If I could charge up a few 12v car batteries so I could run my ham radio for a few hours a day would be perfect.
Others (and my self) have suggested ham radio. I personally would go with HF and get a portable antenna for 20 and 40 meters. Set up a scheduled contact time with other hams so they can report problems if missing too many scheduled contacts. Try and check in to other nets even if it is the maritime net on 14.300.

For food. I’m pretty good with beans, dried legumes and rice. Maybe 25 lbs each. A rack of spices, salt and pepper. Some various meats equivalent to 1/3 lb a day, chicken beef and pork. 50 lbs of potato’s and onions, 20 lbs of beets, carrots, and such, dozen head of cabbages, and probably a couple gallons of pickles, kraut and kimchi. Dozen bags of dried fruits like blueberries, prunes, apricots and such. Another ten lbs of mixed nuts, popcorn, oats, 5 jars of peanut butter and honey. 20 lbs of flour and a small bag of yeast, 10 lbs of sugar, shortening, baking soda. Maybe ten lbs of powdered milk, eggs, choco chips. Probably 20 lbs of gummy bears, 10 lbs of milk chocolate, 10 lbs of coffee. Couple of #10 cans of various juices and while fruits like oranges, pineapple, apples, peaches, etc.
Defiantly paper and writing instruments. Some sky charts, compass, binoculars, along with all the other typical traveling and camping gear I would usually travel with. Damn. So much I’m probably forgetting

EminTX@reddit
Yep.. A quena flute or dongxiao with some printed instructions and music. A whittling kit to learn, then you can make tools as needed plus have kindling. (Chopsticks are great for whittling some quick tools, btw.) A sewing kit with at least 3 projects worth of materials including embroidery, applique, and a lap quilt to learn seriously useful repair skills. Hybrid Calisthenics: Get Healthy, Fit, and Strong with Just Your Body and Gravity . A book on knot tying and some rope, twine, dental floss, and other practice options in a kit. Playing cards with skills included on them. Your Bible and a study reference,. One crochet hook and some yarn to learn this handy skill with a project. (You can whittle different sized hooks if you need them.) Wood working tools to master dovetails and other ways to join and instructions. The Complete Dovetail: Handmade Furniture's Signature Joint
The idea for puzzles and games sounds great but this just kills time. Choose wisely and opt for life skill puzzles that can be useful instead. Instead of feeling like you've wasted a day, each will have a new skill and your brain will be appreciating the natural challenges of learning. Go to the library/bookstore and look at books that sound useful for skill building and look at them to see if you'd like to buy any specific ones now that you know what's really inside.
If you've got any roundtoits that you've lost enthusiasm for, take those, too.

Do you have any form of internet access? Otherwise, bring lots of books, maybe load a portable HDD and Raspberry Pi/mini PC with tons of movies etc. If you have no human interaction, movies/TV shows can sorta at least somewhat help with that.
Also bring some form of hobby, maybe paper to draw on or something. And probably music or something, since it will be so quiet. Even an AM/FM radio, if you can get any kind of signal. AM can actually be kind of fun to play with at night, you'll pickup interesting stuff then wait for announcer so you can figure out where it's coming from. Bring wire so you can mess with using it as an antenna.
I sometimes think how fun it would be to go somewhere and be isolated for a set amount of time, but work kind of gets in the way of being able to do adventures like that, and have to pay the bills.

Fairly comprehensive medical kit including antibiotics, antihistamines, NSAIDs for pain, tweezers, sutures and anything else you can think of. Ask your doctor. Lots of water proof matches and several bic lighters. A couple boxes of candles, look for Jewish sabbath candles which I recall are 100 per box and they last over a hour each. Rechargeable batteries and a solar powered charger LED headlamp, roll of parachute cord, duct tape, a hatchet and a couple boxes of nails, 150 feet of climbing rope, sewing kit , binoculars, a couple of notebooks and both pens and pencils Books (printed). rozina076@reddit
Bring 25% more food than you think you'll need. Not only do you need more calories in the cold, but you will eat out of boredom. Make sure to bring some comfort foods. What do you like when you come in out of the snow, when you feel under the weather, reminds you of childhood, etc? Also the next 4-5 months includes major Holidays, will you be wanting something special and festive for those days? A few boxes of stuffing mix, some gravy fixings, and cranberries will put a Thanksgiving feel to a meal. For me I'd add the green bean casserole, but that's just me.
Have a well stocked first aid kit, book, and the knowledge of how to use those preps. Cuts, burns, frostbite, various skin conditions, being able to immobilize various parts of you if needed. Don't forget dental issues. They have otc stuff for toothache and gum pain, stuff for temp fillings or to put a cap back on, and stuff for canker sores so they'll heal faster.
Bring plenty of skin lotion and lip balm. Also petroleum jelly. Dry, cracked skin is no fun and can lead to infections.
Things to do to keep your mind and fingers occupied. Not just books and puzzles, but stuff you can do on autopilot. That could be some kind of craft you're into or some other task you're already reasonably good at that it can be soothing for hours at a time when you might not feel up to paying attention to a book.
If one of those things is sudoku, I strongly advise getting a sudoku board and a few puzzle books. The board you can set up from the starting position of the book, and not have to fill up a piece of paper. If you finish the books, you can start again from the beginning which you have probably forgotten the solution to by then.
Others have already mentioned you need a way to signal for help if things go unexpectedly south and you need to be evacuated. You might also benefit from some other type of communication even if it is only intermittent. Is a Starlink mini in your budget and feasible? Do you have a ham radio license? Even if there is no one to talk to, you can always listen to the propaganda on VOA broadcasts on ham radio. If you want to power a tablet or MP3 player or something, go search "pedal power generator". For under $200 you can get a pedal power generator that will charge a battery while you pedal. Then you can use the battery to power your device. Get your workout and some electricity in one go.
Ymareth@reddit
Popcorn cernels so you can make some snacks.
I'd look into writing or painting, you can find instructions available online and print out beforehand. Learning a new skill sounds like a very good idea.
I'd look into having a power station hooked up to the solar system, then you'll have some electricity the days you'll have little to no sun. Someone mentioning a biolite, that is also a good option since you'll have fire wood.

This probably isn't the type of recommendation you're looking for but I would get a modified iPod. I recently ordered one (iPod 7th Gen), it has an upgraded battery and 2TB of storage. You could add thousands of songs and hundreds of movies. The battery is roughly 36 hours of usage between charges. Plus can be charged easily with your possible solar. Or a small hand crank battery. I'd stock it full of TV shows, movies, audio books, podcasts and music. A good source of entertainment to kill time. The screen is small and there may be better options but there's no Internet requirement and you could avoid using the battery on something more important like your phone.

This scenario is something I’ve thought about a lot over the years. Not the resort part, but knowing I’m going to be snowed in from October or November to March or April. Questionable power but having backup sources for the most important things. I just go through that scenario in my mind and try to think of every single thing I would need for six months.
First of all, make sure you have more than enough dog food and treats! Maybe pee pads, depending on the dog and if the weather may too bad for him to go outside at times.
Light sources like oil lamps, kerosene lanterns will be important since it gets dark so early in the winter. Like others have said, plenty of different forms of entertainment including some that don’t require electricity.
Make sure you have different food items. Make a varied menu, along with snacks you could make, so you aren’t eating the same thing day after day. And go through the recipes for those meals and make sure you will have everything you need to make them. Plus if you have a menu to try to keep to you will know how much you will need to have of each item. You don’t want to run out of a necessary item in the middle of January.
Layering clothing items for extra warmth. Wool blankets, electric blanket if possible (that will sometimes be the only thing to warm me up when I get really chilled other than a hot bath).
Swollen_chicken@reddit

I've seen people selling used Starlink internet devices. Plans look like they are $50 a month. It might be a good option even for basic internet and emergency communication. I'd double check the coverage for that area.
Itsnotyou_Its-me@reddit (OP)
I’ve used Starlink up there and it works. Continuous use was like 35-70 watts so I would have to bring a separate solar panel system (I’ve got one) and dedicate it to just that. Starlink is amazing.
don51181@reddit

tools to repair and replace whatever plumbing is in place
flour and grains at least should be in small mylar bags say 1-2 weeks worth, maybe with a few supplies with larger mylar bag with oxygen absorbers. The purpose here is to have a backup food supply in case some event happens that traps you there or in which it is preferable to be there, even if you must stay without supplies frome the outside. So at least a large bag of flour, oats, beans/peas/chickpeas, sugar, salt, vinegar, ghee and whatever you consider the fundamentals. Backup food which you do not intent to consume within 4-5 months. Normally, I would not suggest this but we live in strange times, maybe some MREs.
Is there a solar water heater on site? It might be nice to have a unit that can provide hot water even with limited power, at least on a sunny day
beeswax candles (a waterproof way to generate heat and light) + if you need something waterproofed you can use the beeswax. For example if something is rusted up, you can scrape off the rust as much as possible, heat it to oxidize and stabilize the red rust, then apply beeswax to the hot metal to waterproof it. You've stopped the rust, with a fairly long term solution, with limited supplies and it will help keep machinery and tools running
