Am I in the majority or minority if I don't mind driving around DFW for things?

I'm in Irving.
I don't mind driving all around DFW for food, hang out with friends, work, activities, etc. To me it's just one big neighborhood.
I just turn on some music or a podcast and drive. A lot of the time it's just me in the car so it's some nice alone time.
Cute-Technology-4814@reddit
Me and Denton, if I feel adventurous and want good Mexican food I go to South fort Worth
Cold_Ad_3420@reddit
No, I love driving around just for funsies. if the traffic isn’t terrible and I can speed ahead if slow people
Christ_MD@reddit
The traffic is fine, I’m used to it.
It’s all the bloody road construction that gets to me. They’ve been “working on” I35 for like 50 years, other roads have had 20 years like they abandoned the project and just left the equipment and barriers.
MisanthropicAnthro@reddit
I can barely stand going to the next town over, 5-10 miles away, by car.
toritxtornado@reddit
same. i’m from maryland so driving an hour was a weekend trip.
almadoak@reddit
I’m from VA and while I know we’re suppose to have driving “beef”, can we agree Texas is worse than the whole DMV?
Important_Witness375@reddit
Ive lived in NJ, Nova, and TX, the DMV was the softest drivers of them all. It was almost like they were to scared to go above the speed limit. DMV hands down the worst
royalooozooo@reddit
Tell me you don’t have kids without telling me
blacksystembbq@reddit
Lived in NYC for years. The subway is fun and interesting at first, but gets old fast. Nothing beats the convenience of loading your groceries into your trunk, driving and parking right in front of a store/restaurant, not having to worry about sitting on a seat with other people’s fecal matter, setting your own temp, talking on the phone with privacy, etc
therealallpro@reddit
I think this is obvious…most ppl I know that argue against this say that is environmentally unsustainable and probably more important economically unsustainable
Not that it’s better for selfish reason
blacksystembbq@reddit
It’s not obvious. A lot of people would rather not drive in traffic, deal with parking, car costs and maintenance, etc which is why Dart still exists here. There’s plus and minuses to both
QuintoxPlentox@reddit
DART still exists here because not everyone owns a car and it's not always a matter of choice.
thelazysob@reddit
I remember when DART didn't exist.
blacksystembbq@reddit
The reasons that people take mass transit are plentiful and cannot be reduced to only these two reasons
pakurilecz@reddit
what are the other reasons for using mass transit in Dallas on a daily basis
blacksystembbq@reddit
People don’t want to sit in or deal with bad traffic, a lot of people who take dart have cars but drive to station and take dart, can read, sleep, surf the web instead of drive, saving the environment, exercise, some people like to take bike to station for daily workout, unable to drive like blind or handicapped people, don’t want to find parking downtown, company pays for dart, etc.
QuintoxPlentox@reddit
Just providing another perspective.
blacksystembbq@reddit
I said some people don’t want to deal with car costs and maintenance. You said not everyone owns a car. Seems the same to me and not another perspective.
Miry47@reddit
I own a car however I dont want to be stuck in traffic for one hour+ during rush hour. However I can’t get to seem to get up on time and yet getting to a place for mass transit still takes time and then maybe two hours + to get to said destination so I will take the lesser of two evils there.
I hate driving period , but I will still drive on 30 121 183 635 etc versus taking public transit as it will take much longer due to all the stops and the fact that I work long hours and can’t get up early enough to catch the DART to go to work and can’t even make DART on the way back home .
QuintoxPlentox@reddit
Okay.
CluckstinaEgguilera@reddit
in DFW it's because there's only one reason
they're poor
Torchness9@reddit
Definitely was on DART when a gentleman shat himself on the train and thought it was hilarious. You can keep mass transit, thanks
OhPiggly@reddit
That is not the reason why Dart exists. Dart exists because some people rely on public transportation. It is not there because a handful of people want it because they want to avoid traffic.
Organic-Astronaut559@reddit
I’m leaving Dallas next month for NYC. Other than the transport, what was something that you had to adjust to?
blacksystembbq@reddit
As you may know, everything is more expensive there, including groceries, movies, drinks at a bar, etc. I shopped at Trader Joe’s a lot bc their prices remain low everywhere. Also shopped at Aldi, Costco in Brooklyn. Finding an apt is also harder in Manhattan bc of their income requirements. I found subleasing the easiest, and found most of my apts on gyspy housing facebook group.
Organic-Astronaut559@reddit
Thanks for the quick reply! Luckily I am relocating via my work so they have adjusted my salary for the cost of living. I’ve already secured an apartment in Hamilton Heights but haven’t looked at the closest Trader Joe’s or Aldi’s. I’ll go do that now. :)
_loathed@reddit
Have you ever been? They put you up in West Harlem. That’s 30 minutes from midtown. You’re barely even in NYC. What a nightmare that’s going to be. I lived in NYC for 35 years before moving to Dallas.
Organic-Astronaut559@reddit
I’ve been since I was little. I live in uptown right now and work at Microsoft. Their office is in Las Colinas which is about the same commute time as my new apartment in West Harlem to their office in Times Square. I found a two bedroom rent stabilized apartment on a quiet street, $200 more than what I’m paying for right now. Why does nobody like upper Manhattan? It’s quaint and historical.
_loathed@reddit
Comparing the commute from Uptown to Irving and Harlem to Midtown is wild but, I appreciate your optimism. Good luck with the move.
blacksystembbq@reddit
Also, Meetup is a good place to meet people. I found the variety of meetups groups to be much greater than Dallas, and much easier to find your “tribe”. Must be very exciting to move, I know I was. Best of luck to you
cuberandgamer@reddit
You can always have both. We need options around here
cornborncornbread@reddit
What do you think about something like Detroit’s small monorail system that just goes around downtown? Probably 30 minutes to go in a full circle. I was only there for a conference, but I didn’t have any fecal or safety complaints. I’m coming from mid cities so I’d love to just park out, ride in, spend money, get back in my giant SUV and go home.
blacksystembbq@reddit
Like I said in another comment, there’s pluses and minuses to car and mass transit. Having taken both, I prefer car. Most of my coworkers and friends who have taken Dart and Denton A train have switched back to driving bc the minuses of Dart outweigh the pluses.
NYTX1987@reddit
Freezing your nuts off in the winter also isn’t fun, nor the sweltering heat In the summer. But I do miss reading the newspaper on the commute.
cypressTXdoggodad@reddit
What does everyone else do, ride their bike around? I’m confused
squirrelnutcase@reddit
You cant just "drive". Dfw driver will challenge you. See if they can cut you before they exit 🤣
RouletteVeteran@reddit
When I was a kid, I can only think of one time my father was alive had dealt with someone with road rage. I remember him pulling over to a Taco Bell, that was off in Euless. To a little man, with a tantrum. Dad hopped out (played college LB and was still fit and 6 foot 3.) dudes whole mantra changed, they talked and shook hands. Since being back in DFW, I think I’ve dealt with a dozen road ragers or more in a 6 month span. Not sure if it’s “covid brain or lockup” or people that moved here from other places. Makes me miss living overseas. Yeah, road rage is there but not ready to literally use my weapon against someone or risk prison or death. Ego drivers Foreal
TodayNo6531@reddit
I view my time as worth money. If I am driving around the metro for basic stuff I am losing money.
I think this is just a matter of what value you assign to time. If it’s monetary like me then no thanks lol.
AmaiaSkye@reddit
Ah - 183 comments! I miss Irving and miss living off of 183!
Same, I love the traffic!
sikidis33@reddit
You must be younger than myself. The older I get, the more I don't like driving.
PilotAleks@reddit
I'm in arlington so I'm right in the middle of traffic central. Cooper street and matlock full of cars between 3:30 and 7 pm, i20 and i30 backed up all the way to dallas. Can't do shit out here without it taking 2 hours to just get there
forkkiller@reddit
The drive is never the problem. It’s the other drivers that make it miserable.
Francie1966@reddit
And the road construction.
vinhluanluu@reddit
I loved being a night person when I was younger; the roads were so nice.
Dick_Lazer@reddit
Being able to grocery shop in the middle of the night was also great.
SliverMcSilverson@reddit
Thankfully WinCo is still 24/7. That place was my lifeblood when I worked till midnight
ArcticIceFox@reddit
But it never has the type of stuff I like to get from places like Kroger sadly. Otherwise I would've gone more often.
nicistra@reddit
The only people who complain about drivers or traffic in DFW are those who have not lived in another major city in the US.
ElkPants@reddit
I strongly disagree with you. Texas roads are horribly designed, unintuitive, and lack standard road markings found everywhere else in the country. Combine that with the massive influx of people, “Texans” DO drive much worse than other metro areas.
tengris22@reddit
As a 40-year resident of Dallas, having moved away just over a year ago, I have only three words for those of you who think drivers are bad, the roads have potholes and roads AND signs are not well lit: Move to Tucson.
You have no idea how good you have it.
NikkiVicious@reddit
Plus the constant road construction. Plus the potholes I could lay down in (and have lost wheels to). Plus $90 toll bills when I have to get to a doctor's appointment and there's a wreck on 121/183.
ElkPants@reddit
Exactly. Locals will know and anticipate the awful roads because they’ve driven on them thousands of times. Throw someone on there who’s never been to Texas before at 80mph and it is a guaranteed disaster. Now make it several million more people specifically in the metro areas.
O7Habits@reddit
If you drive on 35 in Fort Worth at night you can’t even read the reflective signs that tell you about exits and street names until you are right on top of them. Seems like that should be a priority to fix, but some have been that way since before I moved to the area in 2021.
mylightisalamp@reddit
Very much agree with you
Jayceem12@reddit
I used to drive in and out of NYC and all through the cities in New Jersey, nothing and I mean nothing compares to the craziness I see on the roads here. You are out of your mind if you think that all other cities are like this. The ego and cockiness of the drivers here make all the difference. It definitely has something to do with the attitude of entitlement......
NCPTX@reddit
Try Phoenix driving. The roads and highways may be better but boy are those drivers vicious and they are not courteous. They also tailgate you much much more and cut you close to your bumper and almost cause an accident if you don't drive very fast. It is easier to get around, but driving is mad max fast there. Drivers here are bad, but it's the roads that get you more here and lanes are so narrow in some areas.
LegendJRG@reddit
The drivers are absolutely the most idiotic I’ve ever encountered (lived in NY, LA, ATL and visited Chicago dozens of times) so agreed on this. Traffic is traffic everywhere and even if the drivers are uniquely dumb here it mostly only impacts themselves from what Ive seen. I’m used to driving around and it kind of shocks me how much more of the city I’ve seen and been to only living here going on 4 years compared to some of my friends now who grew up here.
NikkiVicious@reddit
Nope. Lived in the Bay Area. I'd rather be doing 90 in bumper to bumper traffic than whatever the fuck goes on on 35/635 or 360 or 121/114/183... like I don't care how much a person wishes it, you're not getting a quad cab long bed truck in a Miata sized break in another lane.
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
Nah, they’re pretty terrible all over. The only places I’ve been where I’ve thought “man, there aren’t a lot of bad drivers here” are remote places in like Montana, Utah, Arizona etc where there are just so few drivers to begin with.
Everywhere else with a decent size population is rough. NYC, Miami, Houston, Chicago, you name it the traffic sucks and the drivers suck.
daltxlas@reddit
Moved to Houston for work for a short stint and it takes 45 mins some times just to get out of the neighborhood on to the major road. I’ll take driving at home (Dallas) any day.
Odd_Departure_9511@reddit
I feel this way too and then I remember that other people also feel this way about me.
We are all traffic, every single one of us.
cafeitalia@reddit
Right here someone said the same thing about you 😂
NikkiVicious@reddit
My grandfather taught me to always drive like everyone else on the road is crazy.
I mean, he lived here in DFW for 50 years, so he was well aware of how true that was... but still a good lesson lol.

I’d rather drive to Dallas than Fort Worth. The traffic and tolls in Fort Worth always make my wallet go “TF wrong with you???” Other drivers give me anxiety with how bad they are, so I limit heading into Dallas from the Frisco area, on the weekends during brunch time when traffic isn’t as awful.
Organic-Astronaut559@reddit
When I first moved to Dallas, I picked uptown for its walkability. I can go a couple of days without needing to drive, and it’s amazing. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I enjoy driving to Frisco to where my therapist is located. It’s the only time I really drive. I consider that a long drive and it’s nice to get and see the roads.
DFWGrovite@reddit
Unless I'm running late, I don't mind at all. The road rage is just part of the experience.
happy_puppy25@reddit
Driving my parents around is an experience, being cut off and almost killed at every interchange is interesting. And 635 east is a load of fun still, with rocks and debris flying everywhere, there was even a hazmat truck releasing something into the atmosphere on Jupiter yesterday
JONTOM89@reddit

I also don’t mind driving. I grew up in the suburbs, so I always had to drive a while to get to other events. I like listening to podcasts and I enjoy the alone time 🤷🏾♂️

I guess, if you have nothing else to do and money to burn on gas.
Once you have 2 or more kids that have to go to sports or robotics activities that are all 30 minutes from home it’s not so great.
MoveApprehensive3358@reddit
You like sitting in traffic?
Drowning1989@reddit
I hate driving. I especially hate driving from Fort Worth to Dallas for concerts because the traffic is killer
RockabillyJLU@reddit
I drive in the DFW everyday. There’s a difference between the way Dallas drives vs the way Fort Worth drives. I would rather drive in Fort Worth than Dallas.
Povegleia@reddit
i moved to Dallas from the PNW about a year ago and frequently go between Dallas and Irving. the roads are alright, the drivers suck. i miss having reliable and quick public transportation though

LoveAndAbsQueen@reddit
I get that! Sometimes it's easier to just go with the flow and skip the stress
genghis-san@reddit
It's great you enjoy driving, love that for you. The problem is that not everyone does and we're forced to drive. Other world cities, even other American cities like NYC or Chicago have invested in public transportation to where driving, busses, and subway are on equal footing. DART is not on equal footing at all with driving, which is a shame. You can see it in the simple fact that to take the DART, you have to get to a highway to use it (outside of downtown). I work a 15 minute drive away that is 50 minutes by DART. Had to give in after a year and a half and finally get a car which has cost me way more than public transportation ever has.
GREGORIOtheLION@reddit
When we lived in Dallas, I’ll never forget when it finally hit me how bad it was. We lived in old East Dallas and we’re going to a concert in Irving and it took us an hour or more to get there.
Funny enough, we now live in Washington DC where it can take an hour just to get 7 miles. But DFW is like that, times 1,000
mcTech42@reddit
I love it! Coming from a trash city without shit to do, I’ll gladly drive 45 minutes for a nice mall, professional sporting event, concert, my favorite hot pot restaurant, six flags. I’m just glad there’s actually stuff to go to
DaddyHawk45@reddit
You are definitely in the minority. In our circle of friends, we were the only ones willing to drive anywhere to meet up. We were always the ones going to their area/houses. When it came time to reciprocate, the excuse was “it’s too far.”
FlyinInOnAdc102night@reddit
I drive around DFW for work (sales). I am with you. Traffic is what it is, drive slow and assume people are going to drive like assholes and it takes the stress out of it.
There is so much stuff within a 30-45 minute drive.
94Trooperman@reddit
No big deal for me to drive 30 - 40 miles to something in DFW. My sister, in Kansas City, thinks that anything more than 10 miles is a long trip. Just depends on you.
Thad_Mojito11@reddit
Man I am not even from Dallas and I would go back just to drive. Y'all's highway system is nuts.
toumei64@reddit
I lived in Dallas for a few years around 2016 and I was in the Design District/Victory Park area. Most of the friends I made lived a little farther out and thought it was crazy that I was willing to drive to Addison or Plano to see them. They used to joke that if they lived in Plano, they weren't going any farther than Addison, and if they lived in Addison, they weren't going any farther than Addison.
I drove all over, mostly trying new restaurants and breweries, but also occasionally to visit friends. It wasn't unusual that I would go to Arlington, Grand Prairie, Fort Worth, Grapevine, Frisco on a weekend.
Then I moved to Denver and if you think traffic in Dallas is bad, it gets so so much worse. I don't want to go 10 minutes from my house anymore. Maybe my tolerance for traffic was just higher back then, or maybe it's just higher in general.
Leave-These@reddit
I live in Little Elm, so driving to Dallas and most parts of DFW are about 40-50 minutes. I’m trying to get a place in Plano for that sole reason.
That being said, I do enjoy driving. It’s that time in my day where I can let my worries go. When I’m driving, there’s nothing I can do about my problems. I just sit back and enjoy my tunes.
mylinuxguy@reddit
I have 250,000 miles on my 06 Tacoma pickup.... 95% has been driving in DFW traffic. Traffic has just gotten worse every year. I don't drive during rush hour(s) anymore. To stressful.... I could use to leave Plano at 4 pm and be back in Grapevine before 5. Rush hour seems to start around 3 pm now. I am definitely in the hate driving crowd now.
Miry47@reddit
Depending on where you are and where you are going it starts around 2 pm if not earlier
O7Habits@reddit
I don’t mind my wife driving us around. I used to like it, but there are too many crazy drivers now. The worst part is when you actually have to be somewhere at a specific time and you run into unexpected jams. I love trying new food, but going more than 30 minutes away and eating at unknown places makes me nervous about being far away from my home toilet.
SteelFlexInc@reddit
I don’t mind driving around here either since most of our roads are big and fast BUT I prefer to time trips to avoid rush hours if possible so that I can keep moving even mid day. If you can avoid the peak hours, the highways are good
lupin_bebop@reddit
It’s not the drive. It’s the other drivers. They are terrible, especially younger ones.
VAST_PEPE_CONSPIRACY@reddit

anon384930@reddit
I’m starting to feel this way, but I think it helps to not have to commute to and from work. If I had to drive 30 minutes each morning/evening then I would be much more annoyed about having to drive 20 minutes to dinner with friends at 7 PM on Wednesday and would probably skip
drinksandogs@reddit
You're in Irving where everything is within thirty minutes. That could change when you're in Frisco and most things are an hour or more away.
rmg418@reddit
I used to live in Denton and driving an hour to Dallas in traffic whenever I wanted to hang out with friends or do fun activities was so annoying. Now I live in Arlington and I enjoy the drives much better with a lot of other towns being like 20-30 mins away. Location is very important in DFW.
happy_puppy25@reddit
I can’t wrap my head around people who come to Dallas with high salary jobs and choose to live in prosper or Celina. It’s extremely common and they can easily afford a house in Plano or Richardson instead.
rtorrs@reddit
Cause Plano houses are old and not updated for the same price or more than a house in Prosper or Celina
happy_puppy25@reddit
Yes you get newer houses in prosper and Celina but they are all cookie cutter McMansions
rtorrs@reddit
Plano has a lot of those too
I do wish older homes would be either updated or torn down for new builds, instead of the sprawling of new neighborhoods way out where
fadedblackleggings@reddit
You're right. Was pretty shocked at the age/condition of many homes in Plano. Outdated interiors for very high prices.

I agree, I live in Grand prairie and it's great living central to the metroplex. Irving would be even nicer, quick drive to Dallas and closer to the great food in northern DFW.
EnoughSprinkles2653@reddit
This is fair. I’m also in Irving, and when I try to plan gatherings with friends who live in other parts, we often end up somewhere over here since it’s more centrally-located for them. Fine by me!
NCPTX@reddit
It depends on the area. I enjoy driving in all areas of Fort Worth more than I do in the Dallas areas. I will avoid certain areas and certain highways such as the 635 and anywhere in downtown Dallas. I'd rather take DART if I have to do things in Dallas. Otherwise, I just mostly drive in the northern suburbs.
myshellly@reddit
I don’t get people who don’t want to drive. Like, why do you live here? I love that there’s so much to do and I’m going to go do it all.
PainSimple4500@reddit
I think you are probably in the majority or somewhere in the middle? Might be an even split though. A lot of people complain about driving and traffic but at the same time you can’t live in the metroplex and not be ok with driving. I myself don’t mind at all. It’s part of living here. Just leave with plenty of time, take a deep breath and become one with the traffic 😆 I just chose not to let it bother me and enjoy the drive.
See you all out there ✌️

Nah man it sucks driving here. Im from KY and literally everyone there drives for fun. Like we’ll say “wanna go on a drive?” just to kill the time. We even have names for it that all the generations know like “hitting a cut” or “go on a dip”. The scenery is so nice and people drive with respect. It’s just the opposite here. I haven’t even had a slight urge to drive recreationally here in the 5 years ive lived here. This is not a pretty state and the people here behave like animals any time there is a shared space or resource involved. Your grocery stores are like that, your roads, even anywhere that has hallways or elevators is like that. It’s not a population thing either. I lived in DC for 10 years and it was nothing like this. It’s the culture. Yall aint raised right smh.
Cowsmoke@reddit
Also from Kentucky, things there are literally “just down the road” when family was visiting here for the first time and we told them we were going just down the road for dinner, they were SHOCKED to find just down the road takes like 30-45 minutes here.
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
Yeah most of DFW isn’t great for recreational driving. I grew up around DC and loved going out on random drives. It didn’t take too long to get out of the suburbs and into the countryside and the roads were usually fun, good scenery too.
Central Texas, mainly the hill country, is where it’s at for good driving and motorcycling.
rtorrs@reddit
I once went on a drive to Lake Texoma just for fun. Avoided the highway and just wanted to see where Preston Rd ends.
The highways are also quite fun to drive when there are very few cars on the road, like late at night.
So, joyrides do exist here...

I also live in Irving, parents are in north Fort Worth, in laws are in Mansfield, work my full time in frisco, freelance in highland park, down town dallas, frisco, Arlington, Denton, down town Fort Worth, etc. So I’m all over the damn place.
Like you said, I don’t mind the driving especially when the roads are clear. Pop on a podcast and cruise, time flys by. But like the others have said, it’s the other drivers, the no reason traffic, and construction that make it a chore.
SadBit8663@reddit
It's not the drive that's ever the problem, it's means for gas and maintenance usually. I can deal with the people and the traffic and the distances. But i haven't had a decent job in years, and I'm completely beholden to having access to a vehicle. I haven't been able to afford one since my last car was totaled when i got hit in an accident

I kinda agree with OP—I really don’t mind driving around the city and suburbs. The idiot drivers are aggravating, sure, but just for a second. And a lot of the bad drivers aren’t actual idiots, they’re just caught up in their own shit and don’t pay enough attention. They should, but it’s not worth stressing over (although sometimes you can’t help it).
Some of them—like the ones who turn from the middle lane bc omigosh if i miss my turn there’s no way to fix it—should probably be strung up, I’ll grant
ExpensivePie1514@reddit
I live in Dallas as well and do not mind driving places at all I love it really it’s therapeutic for me
mag_safe@reddit
I chose to move to McKinney … knowing I would have to drive for a lot of things.
For the right company and food, I’ll pay the tolls and leave at a less miserable time than 4:30-6pm. I also WFH so commuting was never an issue and I didn’t care for usual 20 something year old night life. I love McKinney.
toodleroo@reddit
I love driving around Dallas 🤷🏻♂️ it’s one of my favorite things about living here
LiveMarionberry3694@reddit
I enjoy it as long as it’s not during peak rush hour
jermide@reddit
Nah I'm good
ZzyzxFox@reddit
I just moved here and I love it.
at the fact that you guys have literally pay to win autobahns and express lanes with no speed limits is amazing
LongHaul20@reddit
Sometimes it feels like certain folks make a hobby out of complaining about traffic. It's a daily ritual for many that has too many variables to accurately predict on a consistent basis. Sure, it makes for fun banter & insider jokes, but that gets old bruh. I don't think Texans fully appreciate how well connected north Texas (and even Texoma) roads are; the state and interstate routes are feats of engineering. Rapid demographic change is the story of all of Texas for the past two decades, where all y'all been? It's wiser to adopt Gandhi's advice when it comes to DFW traffic: "Be the change you want to see in the world." In other words, contain your road rage, grow up, be patient, and truly embody the friendly way that Texas spirit is known for; don't let it just be a tacky sign on your way out from Sherman.
i-am-froot-2@reddit
As someone from South East Asia, if you think DFW drivers are bad, visit my part of the world. You'll start worshipping the drivers here. If the DFW traffic is a bad apple, traffic in my country is like a rotten pile of dead fish.
geargramps@reddit
I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the freedom of getting in my car and going wherever I want as much as I want.
SynthPrax@reddit
If I can avoid getting on a highway, I'm good. I HATE the highways. I hate that our cities are designed for cars and not people.
manojcn1@reddit
I love driving around unless there's that rush hour traffic
CWSmith1701@reddit
I don't know if it's the Majority or Minority, but the Driving around DFW and everything is part of what I loved about running Uber and Flower Delivery for 5 years until I broke a leg.
Once I get my van working and the vanlife build going I will be doing a lot of that again.
Honey_Badger_Actua1@reddit
I really don't mind the drive or even the traffic.
icequeen418@reddit
I don’t mind it 🤷🏻♀️
NothingButTheTea@reddit
I agree. I moved out of dallas and lived in Denton, Plano, and Lewisville, and I have never found driving places as chill as I do in Dallas.
TwerkForJesus420@reddit
It makes me wonder how many people don't mind driving around DFW for things because they've only lived in metroplex/suburbs and that's all they know or where they come from. Not a negative notion, just a small curiosity
chuckolatte@reddit
I really don’t mind the drive, it really can depend on what car you’re driving. If you love your car, it won’t be much of an issue for you. And I do love mine
Upbeat-Dish7299@reddit
The roads aren’t the greatest but I also enjoy driving around the area
lifegoeson5322@reddit
My favorite time to drive in Dallas in 6:00 am on a Saturday or a Sunday on my way to pick up kolaches
HughJazz123@reddit
Give it 5-10 years. The angst will grow.
Texadoro@reddit
Driving isn’t all that bad, it’s the traffic, construction, accidents, and sitting at red lights I dislike. I will run short errands nearby and I swear I’m spending more time just sitting at red lights than I am actively driving.
AnnualNature4352@reddit
in this sub, you have to hate it. its all about urban walkkng neighborhoods and tearing down freeways and buidlng parks. which is also so unrealistic that its ridiculous
_GrimFandango@reddit (OP)
which is why I'm surprised to see so many people saying they don't mind the drive..
tibearius1123@reddit
No one would fault anyone for driving to West to pick up breakfast. It’s a normal natural thing to drive 1.5 hours for breakfast.
ooglesnoopleboop@reddit
Grew up in SoCal near and around Los Angeles, driving’s just ingrained in my blood so I don’t mind it. Traffic isn’t as bad here, drivers are much much worse here.
Frosty_Accident_6165@reddit
I didn’t used to mind but after my back surgery everything seems too far :/
Diligent_Mulberry47@reddit
Yea this was great 20 years ago. Getting from Frisco to Fort Worth was smooth sailing most times I went.
Now there’s so much traffic I can barely get to far north Dallas in under an hour.
Autias@reddit
Yes, I’ve lived in DFW my entire life and have zero issue driving to meet up with friends, go to an event, or go to a restaurant/bakery. Now if the traffic is backed for miles that’s different, but as long as traffic is moving I’m good!
curiosity_2020@reddit
When I first moved to Dallas I thought the exact same thing it's one big neighborhood, compared to the NYC area I was from.
Dr_ManFlyR1@reddit
The drive is nice. The traffic is unbearable.
Blackchaos93@reddit
Minority but I’m there with ya. I only ever started to mind if it’s over an hour one way.
jspurg@reddit
Same. I feel like people are too much when they talk about driving here. It’s fine. I’ve driven in so many major cities. NYC and LA included. Traffic sucks but it’s part of driving and some places are far.
StressAccomplished30@reddit
Same. Put the car in autopilot, sit back, enjoy the ride
11iron@reddit
Grew up in a rural small town where the closest stores were 30 minutes away. I don’t mind going out of my way to a preferred store in a different city. I also get 50 mpg in my car so also plays a big factor.

25 yrs ago it was great, now its like nope
rickybobbyscrewchief@reddit
Just depends on time of day. I've been in sales covering all of NTX and it didn't bother me at all making a 10am appt over in Fort Worth. Then, I've also been late to pick the kiddo up from school trying to just make it from Galleria to Plano at 5:30pm. But if not doing it at peak times, I'm good with all the variety that is available from Stockyards to Deep Ellum, concerts at Dickies Arena to lake day at Texoma, and everything in between. So much to do in DFW if you don't mind a bit of driving.
H2Ospecialist@reddit
I drive from Fort Worth to Dallas for work and it's usually not bad at all, except I leave at 5 AM and head back at 2 PM. Put on a podcast and cruise down 30.
blacksystembbq@reddit
Long form podcasts like JRE have made my commutes much more bearable. Time seems to fly by more than just listening to music
hedcannon@reddit
In the 80s, I lived in downtown Houston and thought nothing of driving 45 minutes to meet people. In Texas, the outside limit for a day trip (trip you take to go somewhere, and turn around to go home is about 3.5 hours. At 4hrs you have to plan to spend the night.
Nearby-Oil-8227@reddit
People like you sadly must be in the majority, because there’s a constant stream of traffic at all hours and days of week versus people just staying where they live….makes it kind of miserable to get around when necessary…
Maybe 20 years ago, I was totally fine going from say, Plano to Uptown, but now, with the drivers and the steady stream of cars on the highways, makes it extremely stressful.
Agile_Definition_415@reddit
Idk but I hate driving
fadedblackleggings@reddit
Don't mind driving, and getting to see new neighborhoods. Do mind, feeling like I've gone on a 3 hour roadtrip, just to hit a few different Malls or stores.
Sometimes, it literally could be shorter trip just to drive all the way to Oklahoma to shop, than around DFW.
ossancrossing@reddit
As someone who’s lived here their entire life, the answer is yes because it takes too long to get anywhere now :(
naked_avenger@reddit
I like to drive so it doesnt bother me in most cases
davis214512@reddit
I don’t mind driving, I mind the other drivers and lack of driving skills.
femalepop_fan@reddit
It’s the worst because people don’t know how to Be attentive. Know where they’re going. Go the speed limit. Stay out of the way. I don’t mind driving. It’s just all the other drivers in my damn way.
RabidWeaselFreddy@reddit
I love driving around DFW.
I HATE DFW traffic.
So I certainly don't mind driving around DFW, because you can find so many cool things, but....
BiscuitLove14@reddit
I love to do that! I mean traffic can be annoying sometimes and I try to time things to avoid the worst of it. But my husband and I love to explore DFW. If we need to go to Target we will pick a Target in an area we haven't been to, make the drive, and explore a new city or new area. Same for restaurants and other stores. It doesn't bother us at all, we enjoy it.
