Found this whale washed up last night in anchorage Alaska and can’t really tell what kind of whale it is. Somebody said a young grey whale but it doesn’t quite look right from the pictures I’ve been looking at I was thinking sei or fin whale.

Were these pictures taken Saturday night? Have you submitted these pictures to the NOAA office in Anchorage? These pictures will be useful in their investigation.

I saw her as well. I also got to see part of the necropsy. I think they unstaked her and let the tides take her.

That’s a fin whale. I saw a deceased beached one along the California central coast in September. 2nd largest thing on the planet. It was 61 feet long… a massive sight to see.

It’s a fin whale. You can see the start of the asymmetrical jaw line on the first photo and also the asymmetry continues under the jaw to the belly. Sei whale also have a more downturned upper rostrum.

I'm no expert, but that looks like a dead whale..!
Hour_Brain_2113@reddit
Could just blow it up. To dispose of it. It's been done.

It's either a sei or fin whale based on the size of the dorsal fin and the body shape. It looks like the pleats extend all the way to the navel, which suggests fin. It's not a grey, they aren't rorqual whales and so do not have throat pleats. Blue whales have dinky little dorsal fins and iirc very short black baleen plates.

I thought Grey at first too....but I think it's a Fin whale. Poor thing.

Some kind of rorqual... I'd say fin whale, but I'm not sure if it's size just with these pics
