Harmalin@reddit
My parents say it was always trash.. even in the 70s and 80s.
justlohser@reddit
We didnt even have many cars in the 70s or 80s so I'm curious how so tbh
Harmalin@reddit
They say it’s always been dirty compared to other big cities like prizren or peja. It doesn’t have to do with cars. I Wasn’t even born then so I don’t know.
TheEagle74m@reddit
Peja is dirty and congested as hell
justlohser@reddit
The point of this post was about the mess of the traffic, not of the trash... Also I think yes Prishtina has it bad with trash but not in a unfixable way.
Mateiizzeu@reddit
What does this mean? 140k cars that are foreign to the city? or 140k with the ones in the city? and if it's the second option are parked cars counted?
tarn_198@reddit (OP)
140k foreign to the city, new 6 lane street is being built so hopefully it will reduce all the traffic.
Mateiizzeu@reddit
damn, that's a lot of cars. do you get people from foreign countries travelling there for work or is it really that 10% of the population commutes daily to Pristina?
Nevertheless, the number is still insane. Do you have other forms of transport to replace cars? Trains, Metros?
tarn_198@reddit (OP)
From foreign countries I see a lot from Macedonia, Serbia and Albania but they make a small number. It's just people from all over the country coming here. We have buses which are nice and modern but no trians or metros. The mayor has closed off a main street because he wants to turn it into a square but did it too early. The only thing that can solve this traffic is a ring how we call it here around the city which is planned but haven't heard anything from it.
kerelberel@reddit
Just one more lane bro, trust me.

Bike culture should be a thing in the Balkans as well

Sounds good, doesn't work

It works in Novi Sad
BabySignificant@reddit
Doesn't work anywhere here

EVTOL culture
CrystaSera@reddit
Sure, in Vojvodina people still heavily use bikes, come down here to the south or even worse to Montenegro where you have to ride uphill every 50 meters, see how fast you'll give up on bikes
Used-Orchid561@reddit
I’m from Vojvodina and it is not even close to the Netherlands, there are no good bike lanes. In the Netherlands you have:
These are things that cost a relatively small amount of money to implement (except the public transport) for a much greater cause. Sure I know it’s not super convenient biking in Belgrade, but Vojvodina is perfectly fine to make more bike friendly.
CrystaSera@reddit
Oh its not comparable, but there is a huge difference between my beloved Kikinda and anything south of New Now. But if I have 1 wish for Vojvodina from the magic lamp, I gotta spend it on clean tap water to be honest
Used-Orchid561@reddit
Tap water in Ruma is drinkable for as far as I heard (and I was drinking it a few times, not too much tho)
CrystaSera@reddit
I went to visit my grandma in Kikinda like 4 years ago, and I was in their apartment happy to have a bath as Im used to showers in the place I live. I left the bathtub to be filled while I prepared the towels and change of clothes. When I came back the water was so yellow that I let the water go and decided to not even take the shower. Later when I washed my hands it felt almost oily. Heres a pic I found on the internet that is a pretty close representation
baklavoth@reddit
Come experience Belgrade cyclists in traffic, pendrek culture should be a thing for them
Used-Orchid561@reddit
Yeah because Belgrade isn’t made for Biking, and some cyclists in the Netherlands also deserve a pendrek, but in general it would benefit everyone. Or just better, cleaner public transport.

You haven't seen Los Angeles. Just imagine the what you see in the picture but on double wide roads :p
ve_rushing@reddit
They should call it "Заприщина/Zapristina", from "заприщтвам" blocking [a street]).
SORRYCAPSLOCKBROKENN@reddit
Istanbul laughed at this. Probably has more car driving around than the entire country of Romania(x2).
AnnoyingRomanian@reddit
140k are not much, come to Istanbul and see ))
justlohser@reddit
It is much when you compare the size of Prishtina and the size of Istanbul
AnnoyingRomanian@reddit
This is just the effect of Prishtina being the only economical center and also the capital of Kosovo, plus a lack of public transport and a moving population from rural to urban caused the high amount of cars. There aren't simple solutions the government can take to limit the amount.
justlohser@reddit
Agree on this
Shqiptaria@reddit
come to NYC
takes like an hour to drive 17 km with this traffic
Solid-Scarcity-236@reddit
That would be 6km in Skopje during a rush hour
anotherlost-one@reddit
Public transportation does not really exist in ex yu countries
Unless it is the capital there bus systems
And there are train lines But are not great in Montenegro. Kosovo, Macedonia, serbia
They are ok in Croatia, Slovenia
But the governments are slowly fixing it

i think it’s so cute when people in basically any balkan city complain about traffic
Pek-Man@reddit
I don't know man, I've been to LA, NYC, Chicago and so on, and the traffic in Tetovo seemed like it was up there. Marshal Tito was basically just one big jam when we were there.
Shqiptaria@reddit
i was born and raised in NYC and bro the worst "traffic" in kosovo is more tolerable than the lightest traffic here
inevitable_entropy13@reddit
you have to be joking you just compared a city with a population of less than 100 thousand people to cities with populations over 5 million

Vargau@reddit
I have a wild idea, how about a tram line, with a dedicated lane.
Mysterious_Pea_4042@reddit
They need to implement a bike policy over there.
Inevitable-Pie-8020@reddit
Bucharest is like this, but with public transport alternatives
IndyCarFAN27@reddit
That sucks. I’d love to see Kosovo some day, but Its a little disheartening to hear and see that there’s little in the way of public transportation. I’m interested to hear if there’s any plans for alternative transportation.
Pek-Man@reddit
Buses are everywhere, man. We unfortunately only had time to visit Prizren and Prishtina but both were very easy to reach by bus, and there were buses running constantly to other cities like Peja and Gjakova.
_Negativity_@reddit
Public transport definitely can get bad at certain times, in certain days, but depending on the route, it's not the worst. I believe at the beginning of next year we will be getting additional buses for new and existing routes, and there's also work being done on electrifying the existing railways. They also mentioned trams, but that ain't ever happening.
BGD_TDOT@reddit
Pristina might be the only city in the Balkans with worse traffic than Belgrade and that's saying a lot.
_Negativity_@reddit
I mean, it's the capital, what'd ya expect?
The source of the problem is not only the number of cars, it's also the roads; the quality and quantity of which leaves much to be desired, and the lack of alternative modes of transport; a handful of buses isn't going to cut it, nor will public bikes (2000EU+ per bike btw) without dedicated lanes, on a pretty hilly/mountainous terrain.
universal_serpentine@reddit
yep you live up to your username
tarn_198@reddit (OP)
Well yeah but I'm more angry because the mayor kinda sucks

Makes sence if you consider that Prishtina is the Manhattan of the Balkans and that prishtinians are not plebes like the rest of us. Think of it in Lord Of The Rings terms, they are elves, we are humans. Except Bulgarians, they are Orks
dwartbg9@reddit
Yup, Prishtina is the most developed and largest capital on the Balkans.
