Where should I live if my job's office is in the Richardson area?

Moving from out of state. I can work remote but need to be somewhere within a reasonable distance from the office. I'm looking to live somewhere that has decent walkability and things to do nearby(bars, restaurants, theaters etc). For those reasons I'm considering downtown Dallas which would be about a 15-20 minute drive to my office. Good plan?
Positive-Knowledge18@reddit
I would check out more walkable pockets of Dallas such as lower Greenville, Knox Henderson, state Thomas, etc. The commute may be longer than 15-20 but based on your comments this seems like the best option.

Lower Greenville

Uptown! I walk everywhere, it’s urban, tons of restaurants and walk ability is great. Source: I’m single F mid-30s with an office in Richardson that I go into once a month. :)

You can message me if you have more questions!

I've been looking into Uptown it does looks fun! It will still be a few months before I make the move but I'd love to dm you some time down the road :)
Otherwise-Millennial@reddit
Uptown is the best answer to this question, trust me. And definitely more “organic” like you mentioned. Because it’s older and integrated into the city, unlike new developments like cityline.
Aster007@reddit
Try Addison, that will be near and also nightlife is good. Another area is the uptown as it is very popular with the young crowd.
Record_LP2234@reddit
You need to go on Google maps at the time you plan on driving to work, and using the traffic overlay. Downtown would be 15-20 in the middle of the night. Only. Take a look at the real times during the day and then make your plan from there.
Spawn_SC@reddit (OP)
i don't really need to go to the office. company just requires me to be near one. I'll go into the office maybe 15~20 days out of 365 days.
lovelylotuseater@reddit
For a native Texan perspective, that pretty much leaves anywhere in the metroplex open to you as “near” an office. We all have our personal preferences regarding commute, but we also all know a guy who drives two hours to work and back. I doubt a Richardson based company would even blink an eye at you getting a place in Fort Worth.
Spawn_SC@reddit (OP)
Your post kind of implies Forth Worth is better?
lovelylotuseater@reddit
It’s not to my personal taste but there are certainly people that like it. My point is that if you’re going 20 times a year, don’t worry about it being “In the Richardson area.” By Texan standards, any part of DFW would be considered by your job to be near Richardson. Just focus on finding an area that is a good fit.
Colloquially, Richardson itself will probably not be it. It’s a fully developed area with a lot of boomers that are aging in place in the homes that were meant to be their starter homes. It’s very much a suburb experience and does not sound like the walkable community with entertainment you’re looking for.
Spawn_SC@reddit (OP)
The suburbian experience is definitely what I do not want! Having lived in a suburn for the last 10 years I really really want to shake things up quite a bit.
woahwoahwoah28@reddit
This is for future readers since OP does not have to go into the office often, and it bounces off your very good point.
Apartments.com has a tool that visualizes a map of places to live based on commute time to your place of work. It’s very helpful with narrowing down general areas to live if commute time is an important factor and you’re unfamiliar with an area.
I’d still do your suggestion, but the narrowing down has helped us with multiple moves.

Downtown Dallas is not 15-20 mins drive during traffic. I live in oak lawn and office is in Richardson. Takes about 25-35 mins with traffic

Wherever you go, check out this advice for living near public transit in Dallas (and why you should want to).
All of the cool places that it sounds like you’re looking for are adjacent to public transit, so living near a train station not too far from downtown (or living in downtown) gets you easy access to these places without dealing with the nightmare that Dallas traffic is.
If your office in Richardson is near transit, all the better.

Cityline in Richardson
Spawn_SC@reddit (OP)
I've looked into this place but correct if I'm wrong but it looks pretty... "artificial" to me. Was looking for something a little more organic.
maybachtrucc@reddit
this is how most of urban Texas is. nearly everything you’re going to be looking at is going to be newer
Suziannie@reddit
Hate to say this, but have you been here in person yet?
Most of the DFW area isn’t walkable and is fairly artificial.
Spawn_SC@reddit (OP)
I've been inside the DFW airport if that counts lol. Dallas downtown looks a bit more organic to me
NegotiationSalt666@reddit
Oof
Spawn_SC@reddit (OP)
What's oof about it? Look I don't know the area so these are just my observations as an outsider from what I've looked at so far. It would be great if ya'll could just correct me and inform me rather than just downvote and say "oof". this is is the "askdfw" sub is it not?
entropicitis@reddit
Texans aren't particularly interested in discussing what areas may or may not be organic.
Spawn_SC@reddit (OP)
Ok I'll be more blunt then. Dallas looks like an actual city and Cityline looks like a tiny man-made oasis in the middle of nothing with fancy apartments, fancy bars/restaurants and nothing else.
saintcrazy@reddit
The entirety of DFW, including downtown Dallas, was designed with cars in mind. You are simply not going to get something truly comparable to other walkable cities around the country. You are only going to get these little neighborhoods that happen to have a few things in walking distance.
PinchePendejo2@reddit
Keep in mind that I say this as a very well-traveled person who grew up in and loves DFW.
That's a lot of the Metroplex, honestly. Even downtown Dallas. It is artificially fancy because that's what people here like and they don't particularly care whether it's authentic or not.
You are on the verge of making the relatively common mistake of moving to DFW without visiting it, and then hating it here because it didn't meet the expectations you had in your head. PLEASE visit during the week to get a real feel for the area before moving here — for your own sake.
bellefroh@reddit
I live in Downtown Dallas. If by organic you mean built up mixed use over time, Dallas area was designed for cars. Now there is a growing community Downtown with restaurants, bars, groceries, parks, schools & playgrounds. However, you will also find alot of unspoken racism in the area. Feel free to dm for more info.
mattdamonsleftnut@reddit
Have you checked Whole Foods?
Suziannie@reddit
Might want to plan a trip and check it out in person then. Specially the Richardson Plano area. Pro-Tip: come during the week so you can get a bead on traffic in that area.
NYerInTex@reddit
Where in Richardson? If close to 75 then figure 25-35 min most days for driving from downtown / uptown and I’d recommend living in uptown or arts district which gets you right onto 75.
There are also decent transit options from downtown / arts district and the west village part of uptown if you are comfortable with that and the job is at CityLine or near the transit stop.
It’s obviously personal preference, but I’d much rather drive 10-15 more minutes and have a more full and active lifestyle in a walkable active neighborhood than a few less minutes commute but then you drive everywhere when it’s your time.
For under 2k you’ll get a nice but slightly older spot for 2200-2400 you can get a true luxury new building with some stellar amenities infusing the arts district.
Spawn_SC@reddit (OP)
Thank you! I have to go into the office very rarely so commute time is a non-issue for me. So do you know if there's like an "underground scene"? Stuff like for example punk rock concerts, 420 friendly, cheap local beer, places where people gather and are mostly standing and walking around rather than sitting down etc
DoctorJiveTurkey@reddit
A lot of punk shows are in deep ellum or at grenada theater on greenville ave.
thenotoriouswtf@reddit
Deep Ellum.
NYerInTex@reddit
I’m a bit long in the tooth for the underground scene! But most of my friends are in the hospitality industry and some of them would either be involved or know of it for punk… deep Ellum is the entertainment “shit show” district on the weekends and does have some good music venues. More electronics and house but It’ll Do is a really cool scene.
As to cheap beers, there aren’t as many options as had been but you’ll find places around with specials. Mikes Gemini Twin is a great divey type spot close to downtown, The Peak Inn has good prices and super solid burgers as does its sister spot Adairs.
Regarding apartments I have a stake in an apartment locating business so I’m happy to answer questions if you want to PM me (www.DFWcityliving.com) - as I’ve said before here this is Reddit I’m not looking for clients but happy to help and if you have a need doesn’t hurt to mention (it’s also no cost if you do want the service fwiw).
Most of all I’d highly recommend on of those downtown or downtown adjacent neighborhoods. Knox would be another option - will you have a chance to tour neighborhoods / buildings? That could help (and worst case could be done virtually)

Lower greenville
perfectdozen@reddit
Definitely south, do not recommend Richardson itself, Addison, or Plano based on your criteria.
Uptown, lower Greenville/M-Streets, or even downtown is doable. I worked in Plano (essentially the Plano/Richardson border) off of 75 for 15 years while living on lower Greenville. I can walk to bars. My commute in the morning was maybe 20 minutes. Coming home can be double that, especially later in the week. But this is far, FAR superior to living in the suburbs in my opinion.
jlanz4@reddit
Downtown Plano area may fit what you're kind of looking for.

Not a good plan. Live in Richardson or Addison or Plano.

I would look into The Village. Richardson is 20 minutes from downtown with zero traffic.
