Tbh, though, not really, in this case. I had 3 Miata's and nobody but me gave a damn about them, lol. Only time I got remotely positive comments was after I took someone for a spirited ride.
jpm7791@reddit
I had a lot of compliments on mine I also had a great burn. A group of 3-4 hipster guys in their early 20s rolled up next to me in a yellow Mercedes wagon from the mid 80s. Fedoras, handlebar mustaches, the whole thing. Passenger side guy has his window down. I have the top down in the Miata.
"Is that a Miata?" he says.
I say yeah, expecting a compliment on the British racing green paint on the tan leather or something.
He says, deadpan, "Does it come in men's sizes?"
Light turns green and they go off. They didn't even laugh. I just had to shake my head and smile. No comeback to that.
Later I thought I could've said, "Hats off." But nah.

So far it's about a tie between 3 of them. I'd say pretty much any car that is obviously older. My 1973 GMC K2500 gets a lot of attention from the older crowd, especially when people see it at Home Depot. My 1993 R32 Skyline (gtst not gtr) gets the attention of the JDM fans and older car enthusiasts who have never seen one before. And lastly my 1969 VW baja beetle gets a bunch of attention from everyone because it's hilarious to look at a beetle with 32" truck tires, and a god-awful paint job. They all get different compliments, and it's almost always fun to have the conversations and interactions with people.

ToxyFlog@reddit
My current car because it's the only cool car I've owned 😂
musing_codger@reddit
I get a surprising amount for my Genesis GV80, but by a HUGE margin, the winner was my Caterham R300. I would have people drive alongside taking pictures. People at stoplights would compliment it. Often when I came back to my car in parking lots, there would be people gathered around asking me questions about it. And everyone loved it. I think it was cool enough to have a high cool factor but without the arrogant prick factor that goes along with high end Porsches or Ferraris.
While everyone seemed to love it, kids thought it was the coolest thing ever. I'd let them get into the driver's seat and hand them the (detachable) steering wheel so their parents could take a picture. It was almost like a kid-sized car. It's been years, but I bet some of those kids probably still remember it. Oh, and I took to buying bulk sets of the Hot Wheels version so that if a kid was particularly polite and enthusiastic, I'd give them a mini-version.
ToxyFlog@reddit
My mommy drives a GV80. Super nice car. I was gonna get a GV70 but got a GRC instead. I still would like a GV70 if I had the means for two cars lol.
Top_Donkey_711@reddit
Same with my ssr.
Dinismo@reddit
That gv80 is gorgeous! Like the first one I saw, I was like what in the hell is that beautiful machine!?
XZIVR@reddit
That's awesome. I have one of the many replicas and it's pretty much the same story. I love letting kids sit in it because they're always so happy. Keeping some hot wheels to give out is a great idea! I should look for some to keep on hand too!
musing_codger@reddit
If you decide to go the Hot Wheels route, use caution and discretion. People are very sensitive about strangers giving things to their children. What I did was to quietly tell the parent that I kept an extra toy version or two in the car for when I see a kid that seems really nice and seems really impacted by it. Then I discretely offer it to the parent. It seems like a waste of energy, but if you look at it from the strangers perspective, the sudden appearance of an enticing gift to the child may trigger fears of grooming or something. It's a strange world that we live in today.
XZIVR@reddit
Ah, makes sense now that you mention it. Good idea. Thanks for the heads up.
musing_codger@reddit
I've never had any issues, but people seem ready to throw out cries of "groomer!" or "pedo!" at the drop of a hat these days. I'm almost surprised that nobody commented negatively on my liking it when children were excited to see my car. It's a sad change, but it's the world we live.

When i was a kid I was in awe of a Porsche 356 Cabriolet that was on my street. One day it was in the driveway and I walked over to look at it. Those kids that sat in your Caterham definitely still remember.

91 camaro z28 T-top I basically redid the car in 2015 after a got it for $200. Pervious owner had spent like $1600 between 3 shops trying to get it to pass CA smog with the last place telling him the engine was too worn out and needed to be replaced. I took it home found a vacuum leak around the intake. When I pulled the intake I found the vacuum line to the egr valve was disconnected so I fixed it passed smog. Then repainted the car because it was 3 different colors of black, new interior, and new sound system with 2 12"s in the trunk. Ran great till I added a cam and over heated it in 2020. Still haven't fixed the head gasket and put a bigger radiator in (apparently current radiator and fan are for a v6 car).
But people seemed to like it (mostly other guys). I did have a few people ask me what happened to the roof when the t-top were out.
RogueIslander00@reddit
Had a 2012 Honda Accord Coupe 3.5 V6. I bought it as a certified pre-owned. The sound system was amazing, to this day I’ll never know what the previous owner installed but I’ve never heard anything like it in another vehicle. Low to the ground, low profile tires, limo tint. The thing that got me the most compliments was the paint though. I never knew paint could be considered cool or unique, but I got a lot of comments about mine, it was a more metallic, crimson with some brightness to it with mini sparkles I guess you could say. Every time I took it to a mechanic to get an oil change or whatever I needed, they always complimented the paint and said it looked really good. People who never saw it in person would always say it looked great too. Forced me to want to keep it clean, so I got it washed every week lol Only got it becuase I went to the dealership and some old dude had a Honda with 500k miles on it, I overheard the clerk as he was doing a double check lol, I asked the salesman where there Hondas were and they brought me my favorite vehicle. Unfortunately it was stolen and found completely stripped back in 2020, now I own a ford fusion and I completely regret ever thinking about getting it. More problems than talking about politics at a college.

Most notable was this WWII vet coming out of a doctor’s appointment. I’m trying to load my mother from her wheelchair into my car and this old guy apparates next to me to gush about how much he loved my car and wishes he still had his.
Then there was a night I was picking up food and a German woman left as I was leaving, saw my car and lit up. Apparently, when she and her husband moved from Germany, they bought a Buick. She adored the car, but her husband hated it and made them trade it for a Subaru. She claimed it was the only thing that tried their marriage haha. I owned a Ferrari 355 with a bad engine.
Never drove it and it sat in my driveway with a piece of 2x4 behind each back tire for about a month while I measured it up for an LS swap.
The Ferrari gods saved it, and someone bought if from me for a few thousand more than I paid for it I moved on to the next project.
I got more compliments, people/neighbors I’d never met walking up, and pictures taken in a car I never drove, than I did with 5 years of a 911(964), 1 year with a Viper ACR, or 3 years with a C6 ZR1.

lmkwe@reddit
What was wrong w the engine that a rebuild couldn't fix it? Unless it had a hole in the block, anything can be fixed....
South_Bit1764@reddit
It had been hydrolocked. It had a few bent rods, but I never actually saw inside it myself because it was so expensive to find a mechanic even willing to touch it and the last guy found all that.
The next owner bought the engine and put a lot of miles on the car.

I had black leather in my VW Cabrio (bought new in summer of 2001!) and jeeze did that black leather get HOT in the sun. Only had to eff up once and forget to put the top up when parked and came back to a seat that literally burned your ass through your pants, and you’ll never do that again. (Pro tip: if this happens to you, put the top up and crank the AC on high and stand outside the car for 20 minutes until the interior is chill once again)

I have owned many different cars over the years. Classic and modern. Muscle cars , sports cars, luxury cars of various different makes . Only one would constantly get compliments. A 1966 Volvo 1800s. And one of the funniest things about the compliments was 75% were from women. I was telling this to 2 of my buddies that went with me to pick up another one, and they told me I was full of crap.. As we were doing the paperwork, the seller stopped me and said, " I have to tell you something about this car. I don't know what it is, but I got so many women with this car" at which point my buddies looked at each other and started laughing hysterically.

Months later at a stop light, and car with 2 women in it pulls up next to me, one of them asks me which direction home is and if they can come with.

Slightly built up l48 350(mild cam, edelbrock preformer intake/carb), th400, np208, 3/4 ton axels/springs, hooker headers with glass packs. Almost every time I stopped at a gas station(which at 5-6 mpg was very often) someone would ask if it was for sale. That's actually how I sold it. Last time I drove it I stopped to get gas, a kid(probably mid 20's) asked if I'd sell it. Figuring he was like everyone else that asked(not serious) I told him to make me an offer. He looked the truck over for about 10 minutes. "I can be back here in 30 minutes with 10k cash". We're his exact words. I told him if he showed up in 30 minutes I'd be there with the title. He rolled in 10 minutes earlier than he said, cash in hand, and a huge smile on his face.

Without a shred of doubt my convertible mustang. Girls like the fact that its a convertible and guys that its a manual.
Based on me asking people on reddit as well as friends, here's what I've gathered:
For girls, the only cars they really care about are convertibles, sports bikes, and jeeps. Everything else for alot of them is just "a car" and they don't care about branding or whatever.
For guys, its way more varied, and its really dependent on age, background, etc.

It was a cool car, not going to lie. I wish I still had it.
smokeshowwalrus@reddit
Those cars were tanks, I had an 88 accord LXI and for a 1988 to have optional fuel injection, power windows, door locks and antenna was really something. I sold it to my neighbor when the repairs needed were more than the car was worth and they fixed it and still drive it to this day.
Bohottie@reddit
Yeah…it was crazy. Mine had power everything: locks, windows, moonroof, mirrors. They had great, subtle, clean looks and they were cheap and easy to work on. They really do not make cars like them anymore.
smokeshowwalrus@reddit
What amazed me the most was mine still had the oem window vents with the Honda emblem molded into them but it was a similar story.

Nobody has ever complimented my '94 Accord EX since it looks horrible and has terrible rust. Always blows their mind when I tell them it has 460k miles on it though. I absolutely love 90s Hondas.
Some0neAwesome@reddit
Damn! my last two 5th gen Accords were still running good when I sold them well past the 200k mile mark. Good cars. The last one I named Farm Car and we did all sorts of abusive activities in it. I filled the trunk to the brim with flagstone once. It bottomed out the suspension at about 2/3 full and I just kept loading more. It was rallied in a cow field a couple times and also used to push a classic Mercedes with seized up brakes down our driveway, resulting in a broken turn signal and dented hood.
Bohottie@reddit
94 was the next gen, I think? The first year of it? I don’t think they look as good as the previous gen, but they are still tanks. It was otherwise the same car, I think.

The funny thing is, I have a real love/hate relationship with it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s the king of tow vehicles. It has a job, and it does it incredibly well, but it is not a vehicle I’m excited to own or to drive.

Probably a tie between a 78 Ford Fiesta, and a 79 Lincoln Continental. The Fiesta pretty much has full on race car livery, and strangely girls seem to like it as it’s “cute”. I use to drive it occasionally to high school, and all the girls wanted a ride in it. I thought it was hilarious considering there were way cooler and meaner cars in the parking lot.
The Lincoln is in immaculate original condition, and gets the attention from men, they all want to know if it has the 460. Sadly it doesn’t, it has the 400. The 460 disappeared from the Lincoln in 78. To me it doesn’t matter regardless as emissions really choked the power from both of them after 72.
I gotta be honest though, both of these cars have sentimental value to me, but that Lincoln should probably go to a better home. It was my grandmothers car, and it was driven regularly until she passed in 08. Since then the car rarely sees the road, and unfortunately sits in storage that while it does have concrete floors, the building really traps moisture. Very reliable car though, I have no doubt it’ll start up right now if you put a battery in her, was last driven a little over a year ago.

Last year I bought a 91 4runner with the 22re and I was not ready for the amount of attention I would recieve when I brought it home. I mean, I thought it was neat, and I like 4runners enough to have had 2 different generations previously, but thought most people would look at it and call it a piece of junk. My 08 was built out pretty well for overlanding and I think I only ever had one random guy tell me he thought it was cool.
But my god, I get stopped constantly by guys (and girls) mostly on the younger side who come up to me in parking lots to ask if "that" is my 4runner and how sweet it is, what engine it has, etc. I have hardly done anything to it besides basic maintenance, a 2" lift, OME shocks, and new headlights. It's over 30 years old, not terribly beat up but looks it's age. Everyone loves it. It's been 5 days since the last person stopped me at a gas station to say "is that your 4runner? That's sick"

My mind was blown the first time I saw one of these. They're gorgeous, but the mind-bending part is that it's a Volvo made only a few years before the introduction of the 240. They're just so far apart design-wise that it's hard to imagine them coming out of the same company at almost the same time. (I love the 240 too though.)

It was fast. Especially after the JDM swap/tune. 300hp to the wheels is plenty in a car that weighs 2800lbs w me in it. It satisfied my desire for an Italian sports car I'd never afford.
Bonus: bullet proof reliable. And 40ish mpg on the highway, believe it or not. So long as I didn't step onto the turbo. Then it would blaze through the tank.
Almost every time I would fill up..."what kinda car is that?".... I'd tell them...."wanna sell it?".....my usual response was never.
I do regret selling it. But had little choice at the time.

My 68 Mustang by far. It's lifted and on 31" mud tires. I also have a roof basket and a bunch of off-road lights. All Old-school 6” halogens except for my side shooters which are 4" led pods. I really need to replace them with something period correct, but I'm hesitant because they put the halogens to shame.
Second place goes to my 75 K20. Just a clean mostly original truck. It unfortunately got hit, head on a by a Nissan Altima that was going 105mph. There wasn't much left of it after that.

1991 Camaro RS convertible. Had a 305 V8. Red with black top. Its pretty rare now. I've seen some sell for like 25k now. Unfortunately I flipped it back in 2006 being stupid. It had no safety features so the tires would spin if there was any water on the ground. It hydroplaned on a wet road. Completely totaled. I hit so hard one of the wheels came off and rolled down the street.

It was all 80’s with slapper bars, leaf spring mount extensions, cragar SS wheels with bigs and littles. Dual side exit exhaust with glass packs. Stock 2V 289 and a toploader 4-speed. I still have the car but now it has a 350hp 302 and a spooled rearend. It’s a total death trap and needs to be gone through, so it’s been relegated to the shed until my boys are older. Guards Red BGTS: everyone from burly dudes high up in garbage trucks, UPS drivers, and a topless jeep full of sorority girls would shout at me that they loved my car. On mountain roads, lovely Subarus would immediately pull to the right to give me room to pass them. Kids would come and take pics of the car in parking lots.
