Currently Using Ryzen 7 7700X - Worth Upgrading to 7800X3D or 9800X3D?
Posted by xJustOni@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 117 comments
I've been using my Ryzen 7 7700X for almost a year now, and I keep hearing all these great things about how good the "X3D" line is for both Gaming and Production. My CPU is working fine, and for everything I do it's never been an issue, but with these CPU's being the talk of the town I just feel like I'm missing out on them especially with the upcoming deals. Should I stop worrying, or is it really THAT much of a big deal and I need to upgrade ASAP?
(Current GPU is a 7900 XT. I'd likely hold onto the old CPU for a future build or sell it on the Used Market if I do upgrade and really need the money)
JamesMCC17@reddit
"My CPU is working fine, and for everything I do it's never been an issue"
And the answer is in the question.
xJustOni@reddit (OP)
You're not wrong, just getting a bit of that builders regret now that I'm down the line. XD
Gonokhakus@reddit
Nah, you're fine as is, no need for regret (unless there's some other details you're not telling us).
Let it go and enjoy. Come back to this thought in about 3 years, by that time it might be worth to look into it.
Aggressive_Ask89144@reddit
I have a whole PC that's built and I just want to buy a 9800x3D myself from my own 9700k that's struggling.
it's so tilting that they can keep any in stock. They've all gotten scalped and it's the perfect CPU for my needs gaming and workload wise (I mainly play high refresh competitive games lol).
I'm tempted to just a buy 7700x and call it a day but I didn't wait 6+ years to get 5th best š. However, if I'm forced to pay 600+ for a CPU, I'm getting a 9950x3D; not a 8 core lol
bobboman@reddit
Im in the same boat, I built a computer with a 7700x, and a RX 6800 that I sold and upgraded to a RX 7900 XTX when I found one for <900
I regret not just getting the 7800x3d from the get go but I'm not running into any real issues so I'll wait and see what turns up in 5-8 years
Cirkelzaag@reddit
I have a 7700x too and also regret I didn't wait for 7800X3D. But it is just way to soon to replace this CPU. I'll probably wait to see what the last supported X3D CPU will be for AM5 and get that.
BiscuitBarrel179@reddit
I also have to 7700x, but only because I couldn't afford the 7800x3d at tbe time as I was building a whole new system. So far for gaming there have been no issues and will also wait to see what the final AM5 super duper must have CPU is in a few years time.
MetroSimulator@reddit
Look man, I've bought an 13900kf who deteriorated, now I'm looking at an 9800x3d, if I was you I would be happy I can play my games without paying more
izzyjrp@reddit
Heās not only not wrong. Heās correct. And you are extremely wrong. Donāt let your fomo rationalize a made up mistake. Youāre downplaying a lot of perfect responses and that is typical of a person trying to self sabotage lol
YoloRaj@reddit
If you play games at 1440p or 4k no.
POOPY168@reddit
Depends what resolution your playing at. Itās its 4k keep the 7700x if youāre happy with your fps then keep it. I bought the 7700x bundle. It was awesome. Then I drank the koolaid and bought the 7800x3d. Itās also awesome. Did I need it? No. Did I want it, yeah. But I play at 4k and probably wouldnāt know the difference if someone swapped my chips overnight. Iām pretty sure it gets better fps and better 1% lows and stays cooler. But I never had a temp issue with my 7700x.
Purple_Commission932@reddit
if there's no bottleneck with it and your working fine there's no need to get a X3d or X4d lol you can better upgrade a GPU like the upcoming ones Rtx 50s or amd 8000s that'll definitely will give a big boost in both gaming and productivityĀ
Greennit0@reddit
If you donāt know you need it, you donāt need it.
b-maacc@reddit
If youāre happy with the performance and as you said āfor everything I do itās never been an issueā then I see no reason to upgrade.
Donāt let the FOMO take over.
xJustOni@reddit (OP)
You're right, I'm probably sweating over nothing. Just didn't expect just a year later everyone would be going crazy over these new CPUs and it's got me slightly concerned I made the wrong choice lol.
smk0341@reddit
People will go crazy for the new anything. Personally, I think just donāt worry, enjoy your rig.
DougS2K@reddit
Prime example is these idiots that line up for hours before a new Apple phone releases so they can get the newest phone that is marginally better then the phone that they have and stood in line for hours to get the year before.
I upgraded from an Intel 9700k that was 5 or 6 years old to a 7800X3D two months ago. I'll buy another CPU when this one no longer does what I want it to do like I did with the 9700k.
Buying the latest product every year just for the marginal performance gain at its cost just doesn't make sense.
smk0341@reddit
Marginally is even a strong word to use in that case. Wow, my Geekbench score is 500 more points! Anyway, time to scroll instagramā¦
_Erilaz@reddit
It's not that marginal if you know exactly what you need. Say you are CPU bound and have a use case for higher clocks. 9800X3D is substantially better than 7800X3D there, because it isn't thermally limited with extra cache as much anymore. Chances are 9950X3D will be a massive step forward from the weird 7950X3D, though, so if you need multicore performance, better wait a little bit. That's not to say 9000X3D series is better in everything. In some use cases it's exactly the same. All I/O-bound applications are exactly the same because it has the same IOD as the 7000 series. This is the reason why I wouldn't upgrade now and wait for the next gen.
smk0341@reddit
I was talking about people buying iPhones
karmapopsicle@reddit
When was the last time you saw people lined up for hours before opening on launch day for an iPhone? Those same enthusiasts exist across a wide range of categories. There are people who will upgrade their S24 Ultra to an S25 Ultra. People who upgraded their 7800X3D to a 9800X3D and will immediately swap their 4090 for a 5090 on launch day.
SauretEh@reddit
Respect. Just replaced my 9700K with a 5700X3D last week. Had the damn thing sitting at 5.2GHz for 4 years and it refused to die (still hasnāt). 5700X3D might not last me quite as long as the 9700K did but hey, it was $400 CAD bundled with a mobo and RAM and will last at least a few years.
DougS2K@reddit
Nice. I never managed to get my 9700k above 5ghz all core. She was a bit of a dud for overclocking. It's since been declocked and it's my wife's office computer now so she's still getting some use.
I managed to scoop up one of the last 7800X3D's for $569 from my local Canada Computers. They had 4 left in stock the day I got it and were sold out the next day. Haven't seen them in stock since in all of Canada so I got lucky.
SauretEh@reddit
Got pretty lucky with my 9700K, ran it at 5.4 for a bit but it was a furnace and I didnāt want to kill it too quickly. Think Iāll turn it into an overkill plex server/NAS.
Wanted a 7800X3D but Canada Computers and everywhere else I could find was either sold out or ludicrously expensive, options ended up being a 5700X3D vs almost 3x the price for a 9800X3D and that value proposition just made no sense.
DougS2K@reddit
Man, you had a golden 9700k. I thought about upgrading my NAS (Jellyfin server) from my xeon 2650 V2 with the 9700k but the wife's old office computer was kind of a turd so she got the 9700k instead.
Yeah prices for 7800X3D literally skyrocketed for anything that was in stock shortly after I got mine. The 5700X3D is a solid CPU though and a good price. Hard to complain about that that's for sure.
urbanman2004@reddit
I just recently purchased myself a 5700X3D as well. Got a pretty good discount on a brand new bare OEM unit from AliExpress and paid $145USD in total...
_PacificRimjob_@reddit
I had a 5900X and upgraded to a 9800x3D because it also means I can put the 5900X into my hobby server which is running a 6700K that's definitely not enough threads for the vms and dockers I want it to run. If it wasn't for the server, I'd feel a bit silly about the upgrade as it wasn't earth shattering for me for gaming performance, CPUs last a really long time if you're not chasing the highest end competitive sphere or use it for a job. Unless you come across a too good to be true deal like a friend offloading a 7800x3D or 9800x3D in the future for like $200 or local equivalent or you start becoming unable to do what you want on your computer you're prolly fine.
DickBatman@reddit
Yeah wait for the 9950x3d and buy that
Rilandaras@reddit
Use that as a reason NOT to upgrade, at least not right now. If your CPU ever becomes the bottleneck in the games you enjoy playing and the relative TOTAL performance would go up significantly, only then start considering upgrading.
The x3D series is amazing in certain games, including some I enjoy playing (Stellaris, DotA, Path of Exile, and eventually Factorio when I next become unemployed).
nimajneb@reddit
I built a i5 4690k based build in ~2014/15 (whenever it was relevant) and used that same build only upgrading GPU and SSD until Nov 2023 (last year). I wouldn't upgrade for quite a while if I was you. Spend the money on video games or other hobbies.
murgador@reddit
Me buying my 7800x3d for 204 USD from a microcenter bundle: fuck I want a 9800x3d for better 1% lows and average FPS.
FOMO hits everyone but the reality is we both still have a CPU capable of punching for another half a decade easily regardless.
When the 11800x3d comes out I'll be sure to give that a shot five years from now when my AM5 build is feeling it and due for an upgrade.
CompSciBJJ@reddit
I'm dealing with the same thing with my 7700, but I just keep telling myself that performance has never noticeably suffered because of it so why bother? If I was playing something like a turn-based game where a faster CPU would decrease time between rounds I might consider it, but my FPS is fine and anywhere it might be low enough to notice is going to be because of the GPU.
Just buy an 11800X3D (or whatever is the next best AM5 chip) used for half price like 5-7 years from now when you feel your CPU is actually holding you back
madbobmcjim@reddit
Honestly, I'd skip 9000 series and see what the next-gen x3d was like. If AMD piss everyone off and announce that Zen 6 is on a new socket, upgrade then.
What happens if you buy the 9800x3d now and then they launch a 9950x3d in a few months with dual CCDs and it's better? Will you feel the same way you do now about that purchase?
akaitatsu@reddit
Don't upgrade unless you enjoy buyer's remorse. If your current CPU is working fine, you'll get almost no benefit upgrading and just be out the money.
AzimSF@reddit
That's how it's always been in tech. Even if you bought the 9800X3D, you're gonna face the same thing when the next generation of that comes out
Foserious@reddit
It's interesting too that there's always fear of insignificant gains which did happen between the 7000 and 9000 series. And then this CPU exceeded expectations I feel. Perhaps due to the not so great original launch.
bofh@reddit
Do you upgrade your mobile phone every year? I donāt.
Thereās always something better coming ānext yearā. Iām excited to upgrade to the 9800x3D because I currently have a 3800x and itās a great upgradeā¦ but there will be a ā10800x3Dā out next year that weāll be all excited about.
If what you have now is satisfactory - and Iād imagine it probably is - then you donāt need an upgrade. If youāre not happy with your current system in its own right then maybe itās worth a lookā¦ maybe once the price comes down a bit?
DrunkGermanGuy@reddit
The only reason for you to switch would be if you constantly ran into a CPU limit in the games that you play. If that's not the case, I think you are better off saving the money.
The 7700(X) is a pretty capable gaming CPU in it's own right, roughly on par with the much beloved 5800X3D in many games actually. I have one myself in my gaming PC, and while the X3D chips are certainly amazing pieces of hardware, I don't see the value proposition of switching from a 7700X.
izzyjrp@reddit
If the 7700x is doing the job now it will do it for the next 3-4 years at minimum. Youāre fine. Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses.
froli@reddit
I'm in the same boat as you. I'll get their 78 or 9800X3D used when they upgrade to the next big thing instead.
hugemon@reddit
I upgraded to 5800X3D last year and it's very satisfactory. I recommend the same strategy. Wait till the end of AM5 socket lifecycle and then get a used 9800X3D.
Allu71@reddit
It would have been worth it to choose the 7800x3d instead of the 7700X when it was only like $320, replacing your 7700x for a 450 dollar 7800x3d makes no sense. The performance gain for the amount of money is incredibly bad since you can't re-sell your 7700x for full price.
DatBoiRagnar@reddit
So I was using a 7700x and "upgraded" to the 7800x3d. There was a decent bump in performance but I highly value how much more efficient and quieter the system is overall while gaming compared to the 7700x.
GreenKumara@reddit
Hardware unboxed just put out ANOTHER video about this. Like a few hours ago.
Its fine. But it depends on use case.
Acrobatic-Writer-816@reddit
No itās not worth
ExplanationStandard4@reddit
The 7700x is a good CPU unless your running at 1080p you probably won't feel loads of difference
tm0587@reddit
I upgraded from the 1600 to the 5600 last night and my man here asking about upgrading the 7700X lol.
End of the day, it's hard for us to say without knowing your current specs including monitor resolution and refresh rate.
legacyzero89@reddit
Just enjoy your PC and don't worry about it :)
marcus11619@reddit
I just got a 7800x3d to upgrade my 11700k. I thought upgrading the cpu, platform, and ram would be way better but I canāt tell the difference. I kind of regret it to be honest. Iāve had the 11700 pegged at 5.1ghz for 3 years straight. 11th and 12th gen intel were truly good.
KirillNek0@reddit
Does you PC run good? Games run fine?
When why upgrade?
Milios12@reddit
Depends if u want to see big number become bigger number. If this makes you happy then do it. If not, then don't.
ForThePantz@reddit
GN review from a day or two ago provided more than enough benchmarks to show fps and 1% lows of a given cpu. Check their vid. It has every answer to your many questions.
raydialseeker@reddit
Your final upgrade should be the equivalent of a 5700x3d to AM4. We'll priced near max performance end game am5
blueberryAvocados@reddit
the only reason I got a 9800x3d was because i built my current PC in 2018. I plan to have this one for 5-7 years again. If I had a 2-3 year old CPU that still worked fine for what I needed, I would stick with it.
CharliBrown31@reddit
I built with the same CPU. I'm keeping it as long as I can.
SupremeVenom@reddit
X3D is greatā¦ for CPU demanding games but otherwise itās not that big of a performance boost. I went from a 3600 to a 5700x3d and since I mainly play single player games I havenāt seen that big of a performance boost since the GPU is really whatās important. So I wouldnāt sweat it honestly, youāre getting great performance with your current build no reason to upgrade for the next few years imo.
IneedtoBmyLonsomeTs@reddit
I have the 7600x, and tbh I am not looking at upgrading until the next gen of Ryzen cpus. I'll just get the last x3d CPU that they offer on the current platform.
Since you are saying the 7700x is currently fine for you, I would say you are also better off doing a similar thing. No point in upgrading if you don't need it, unless you have enough money it isn't an issue.
horendus@reddit
Yes absolutely itās worth it

I was gonna buy a 7800x3d and a 4070 super but after checking some benchmarks and a Ā£70 off saving on a 7700x Iām now rocking a 7700x and a 4070 ti super š
londontko@reddit
What resolution and refresh rate are you taking gaming at?
DominicanFury@reddit
just need graphics card update if you missing gaming performance
maxx0rNL@reddit
If I were you I'd wait out for like the 10800x3d or something, probably the last am5 generation cpu, to max out your boards life
da5id1@reddit
That's weird. I went from an Intel 6700k on Windows Pro 10Ā do an AMD 7700 X to Windows Pro 11 and everything was smoother and faster on the 6700k. I kept the 6-year-old fractal design case, of course there are 10-year warranty Platinum power supply, noctua hsf. I did upgrade to AMD 5Ā Ram, etc.
Bambamtams@reddit
You donāt really explain the why, fps you get now, monitor resolution and refresh rate, cpu / gpu usage when gaming, itās hard to give you any advice.
Cheap_Battle5023@reddit
If you play at 4k you can completely ignore this update(check benchmarks on youtube).
If you play at 1080p or 1440p then wait for January. AMD is going to release 9950X3D which will be better than 9800X3D so you will be able to buy 9800X3d for normal price.
MrMcGibblets86@reddit
I have a 7700X too, along with an RTX 4080 GPU. I only game at 4K so the GPU is the bottleneck here. No CPU upgrade necessary. See https://youtu.be/hIkOLBDB9OI Go to 5:55 where I show the stats. CPU is at around 40% and I'm running in ECO mode.
PRC_Spy@reddit
AM5 will be around for a while longer.
I do have a 7800X3D, but recently built a new PC around it. I'm thinking to wait and buy the '5800X3D' equivalent when AM6 (or whatever) happens and make this build last a long while.
RDOG907@reddit
No, just overclock if you want some more performance out of it.
Thorwoofie@reddit
Answer always lies with:
a) If you are still running games without problems, than the answer is NO.
b) If you're starting to running into games that your cpu can't keep up to a minimum fps (let's say 60fps) than yes.
But unless the prices of the 7800x3d are back to what it was back in june/july on 300-ish dollars, than yes buy it. If still with high 400's or even scalping 500's, than go with 9800x3d, if paying full price, buy the new one than.
yick04@reddit
No. Because in two years there will be something else.
Reddiohead@reddit
Wait for a decent sale on a 98x3d. You're in no rush.
roy-the-rocket@reddit
Every 100 bugs you don't spend but invest will generate you about 2 cents every day for the rest of your life even compensating for inflation (based on historic averages).
This sounds a little but it is actually not especially when you reinvest the gains.
About the CPU: do you think you would be able to actually perceive the difference with confidence? I wouldn't, and that it why I would keep the cents :)
Knightshade34@reddit
Only way that 7800x3d would give you any significant fps advantage for gaming with a 7900xt is if you're playing at 1080p and are hitting very high fps counts. Assuming you're playing at 1440p or 4k, your gpu will be the limiting factor for nearly all modern games well before you hit high enough frames for the cpu to be a factor. Other games that could see an increase would be CPU heavy games (city skylines, minecraft, total war, etc).
xJustOni@reddit (OP)
That would make sense, when I watch videos on it they'll show that just upgrading the CPU is like 20+ FPS boost alone, and make it seem like it's this MASSIVE upgrade.
Gohardgrandpa@reddit
Donāt fall into the hype and spend money you donāt need to. Sure the x3d chips are better for gaming but not hundreds of dollars more, especially at higher resolution. Iām really surprised they sell as good as they do.
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d/19.html
The 9800x3d is 8.1% faster on average than your 7700x at 1440p. 161fps vs 148fps at 1440p. Is that worth spending $480 to you? For me absolutely not.
Shit, Iām still using a 12600k at 3440x1440. Iāll upgrade my cpu when it makes sense.
DiggingNoMore@reddit
Having the word "still" in there is weird. The 12600k is plenty new. You're using a 12600k, not still using a 12600k.
I'm still using a 6700k. Yours is six generations newer.
Knightshade34@reddit
You probably could get those boosts in the very CPU heavy games that I mentioned that involve lots of loading of small characters/blocks/simulations. If you're just playing standard FPS games/RPGs/etc, it's highly unlikely you'll see gains that impressive.
SIDER250@reddit
AMD already making medusa that is about to be released 2025 end/2026 start. Iād just wait for those X3D then upgrade if the performance uplift is huge. Iād skip 9800X3D.
EirHc@reddit
For me, I'm planning on doing something more like a 7800X3D to an 11950X3D. Or whatever the last top-of-the-line CPU is EOL for AM5.
As mostly a gamer on my home PC, going for a 800X3D is probably more cost-effective for what I'll really need. But I do use high-end CPUs at work and I figure more cores will likely age a little better until the architecture is completely obsolete anyways.
7800X3D is gonna be perfectly fine, and in games you're likely still going to be GPU limited even if you upgrade to a 5090 when that's released. Wait for the last line of AM5 CPUs to upgrade from your 7800X3D unless you got a ton of money burning a hole in your pocket.
PC_User420@reddit
There is no reason to upgrade, but if you find a great deal maybe
11sam55@reddit
X3D is mostly gaming oriented due to its cache. A lot of people think gaming rigs will also be good at productivity and that's not the case. Also, you'd have to tell that do you mean by "productivity". If it's not heavy duty photo or video editing, you do not need an x3d cpu. Hell, you don't even need a GPU for most cases that aren't those as well.
Muratura24@reddit
Go for the 9800x3d in like a couple of months
Interesting-Eye-1615@reddit

kaje@reddit
The X3Ds are better for gaming because of the amount of cache they have. The 7800X3D is clocked slightly lower than the 7700X and is slightly worse for almost everything other than gaming.
What type of games do you play and what specs are your monitor? If you're playing like AAA games at a high resolution and settings, you'd barely notice a difference.
xJustOni@reddit (OP)
Monitor is a 1440p 240hz (260hz with OC), and I've mainly been into more single-player titles (Final Fantasy 16, Dragon's Dogma 2, Etc.). But I still enjoy some shooters like Apex Legends and COD from time to time.
I like to run Max Settings when gaming if it's stable, but for shooters I run Low-Mid for the extra bit of FPS.
BiscuitBarrel179@reddit
At that resolution, you will see a very minor uplift if you upgrade now, and in my opinion, not enough of an uplift to warrant spending Ā£470!
The 7700x won't be holding you back, it's a fairly capable gaming CPU and should last you a few years yet.
CatalyticDragon@reddit
If you are playing at a normal resolution with normal settings on a normal GPU, then you're probably mostly GPU bound and therefore the performance difference is going to be minimal.
It's all well and good to see big gains at 720p or 1080p but at 1440p and higher the jump from a 7700x to 9800x3d is just 144 fps to 169 fps (14 game average).
https://www.techspot.com/article/2918-amd-9800x3d-4k-gaming-cpu-test/
haribo_2016@reddit
I had a 7700x with a 7900xt and they are fantastic together. However, I bought the 9800x3d. I game at 1440 and 4k. Whilst I only had slightly higher fps in the games i play up to now, I can say that I am also able run slightly higher graphical settings in some scenarios. I can also say that the 1% lows are much better and that I havenāt noticed a single game hitch or hang for any period of time yet, and micro stutters are almost none existent.
Was it worth it? For the games Iāve played up to now, yes. Could I have waited till the next one, probably. Time will tell. Am I slightly biased in my opinion? Yes, because I bought one. The 7700x can always be sold but Iāll be using mine in another build.

If itās working fine in all aspects, be patient and wait IMO. In 6-12 months there will be another CPU and you can reassess if you want an upgrade
CaptCrack3r@reddit
Iāve had these same exact thoughts and Iām really thankful to see Iām not the only one. 7600x with a 7800xt at 1440p and I have yet to find a game, even current AAA that I canāt max out at 100+fps (without ray tracing). I donāt play competitive FPS, so I have zero need for that 240fps mark.
Happy to see the reasonable responses in the comments!

You basically answered your own question. You're not missing out on anything, it's a CPU, I could tell you I have a spoiler and a lift kit on my CPU, but you can't see it.
Same way you won't see anything different when using your PC. Only upgrade if it's bottlenecking you, as in games are stuttering, rendering is taking too long etc.
As long as you don't have problems it's just throwing away money.

In my opinion nah

i assume you have no current issues with the 7700x, let it live its life in your build. in a few years you can sell it then upgrade and there will be better options available, or the same ones at a lower price

The rumor of tariffs influenced my decision to upgrade now. There's always something better released later. It will just be more expensive then, tariffs or not.

they are the talk of town when you play low settings 1080

You probably could get those boosts in the very CPU heavy games that I mentioned that involve lots of loading of small characters/blocks/simulations. If you're just playing standard FPS games/RPGs/etc, it's highly unlikely you'll see gains that impressive.

Don't even consider a 7800x3d, 9800x3d is a generational uplift over 7800x3d which itself is a generational uplift over your 7700x. Your 7700x is fine but if you were to blow money you should only consider the 9800x3d or wait for 9950x3d.

Fair enough, from reading everything else I realized it'd be foolish to upgrade right now. I'll give it a year or 2 and see the market then, as another user said just wait for the next big CPU, then snag a Used 9800X3D. Which sounds like a good idea honestly.

No, you do not need to upgrade ASAP. The 7700X is still a fantastic CPU plus there will likely be at least one more generation of CPUs AMD releases on the AM5 socket in ~2ish years, and at that point the difference in performance will be more noticeable and feel like a good upgrade.

Good to know, gives me time to focus on other things then if I can still hold off for another good couple of years and see more of an upgrade than dropping $400 now just for one part.

Whatās monitor do you have?
xJustOni@reddit (OP)
It's an ASUS 1440p 240hz (260hz with OC), I don't know the exact model but those are the specs.
