Short List of Essential Accessories for SE Asia Travel

I'm traveling through SE Asia for the first time. I'm looking for a short list of essential gadgets or accessories. I've done a bit of research and found many lengthy lists so would be great to know just the essentials.

It rains. Alot. In cities not able to handle the inrush of water. Have comfortable footwear that can get soaking wet and not be ruined. Sandals or slides. A small lock for your bag to deter theft from housekeeping. Adapters for your electronics. Most (phones laptops) can handle the voltage, but the plugs are different.

Sunscreen was very expensive when I was in KL

Bring a bunch of colored pencils to hand out to street kids. They often get regular pencils but different colors are mu h more fun

Where do you get bothered by street kids in SEA?
Rheumatitude@reddit
Bothered by them? No idea. I always brought along gifts to hand out when I was traveling in the provinces.

Would an orphanage donation be more effective?

You seem to have either misjudged my motives or the countries I'm thinking of. When I worked in rural Laos, Cambodia, Burma, etc there were always kiddos running around. Mostly curious about what we were doing. I would gift them pencils and sometimes we would draw if i had time. It was a simple thing and made them smile. Yes, I could have given that $4 to an orphanage but I wasn't working with those orgs as much.

Apologies, did not mean to misjudge, but I was always warned away from doling out freebies to third world kids.

Typically when I was doing that I was pretty deep in the provinces Bx there wasn't any harm to it. Those kids had nothing and were sent off to see if they could get money from someone. This gave them something they could have and use as their own in school. What was the thinking of not handing out things to kids in 3rd world?

There was a worry that they would be out hassling tourists for stationery when they should be in school. There is also the problem of secondary selling.

Bring toilet paper everywhere. Don’t waste space on heavy clothing. Have more than one device and back up your photos on something like Dropbox or google photos just in case you lose your phone.
Take pics of everything expensive you’re bringing. Items. Boxes. Receipts. Get travel insurance. If anything gets lost or damaged or stolen that will help you get reimbursed.
Money belt can’t hurt.
Extra camera is always nice.
You’ll spend 99% of your time in shorts sandals and tank tops. Can buy tons of those cheap there as well. Enjoy!

A Lifestraw and/or water purification tablets.

A solid water bottle (that keeps water ice cold!) and cooling towel were my lifesavers when I spent three weeks in Thailand. Bug repellant wipes (I like Ben’s).

Once you arrive, I challenge you to do Bangkok to Singapore overland in less than 48 hours.
