Bolo rounds.
Bolo rounds will fuck up a drone.
Ask me how I know.
Andrew_Jackson_v2@reddit
I’ll bite. Elaborate
Meanwhile I know you’re full of shit because bolo rounds are a meme. And not a good one
z3r0c00l_@reddit
Yea man. Definitely just a meme, they don’t fuck shit up at all
Andrew_Jackson_v2@reddit
From your own video as "evidence", he says at 6:43: "these just behaved like a low powered slug". Which they are. I never said they couldn't kill but it won't kill any better than 2 ~.50 cal leads balls. Or better than normal buckshot. Or better than a slug. Just look at the high speed, they don't even separate. Or the cable breaks. Then you're launching two large balls which makes your hit probability at a flying object terrible.
On the 2nd video, the wire didn't even stay together hitting a soccer ball. The buckshot is doing the damage. So why handicap yourself with less buckshot? It's not increasing your hit probability or getting stuck in the rotors. For both videos they are shooting at very close distances (relatively). If you bothered to read the post they could hit at 20 meters but they view that as too close. So what good is testing at half that distance especially when that testing shows the bolo's don't spread well?
I asked you to elaborate. How does a bolo round give you a better hit chance than buckshot? Why do you need such large projectiles to down a drone? How do they perform at distances past 10 yards? I said early that a 3.5" B goose load or a 3" 2oz #4 lead turkey load gives you a pattern at long range and pretty good impact on a relatively fragile target. Be honest, could you hit a goose with a bolo round? Or course not. There's a reason no one hunts birds with buckshot and bolos would be even worse. We have 100+ years of shooting fast flying objects at 50+ yards. Start with what works there.
z3r0c00l_@reddit
We’re talking about shooting drones. In the first video, he does just that, and then explains how the round would have disabled the drone. He also states they weren’t trying to destroy it.
I didn’t say all of the tried and true methods were useless, I said bolo rounds work.
Andrew_Jackson_v2@reddit
Like I already said, he shot it at like 10 yards. On a STATIONARY drone. What 12 gauge load can't destroy it at that distance? Your first comment said they would work and would be better. I've asked you twice to elaborate. I'm asking you "how you know". And you haven't said shit which tells us all we need to know.
Spirited-Sea1120@reddit
I saw a Syrian guy launching bombs from a 12ga with a welded steel pipe on the end of a shotgun wonder if you could use something similar to launch wire nets https://youtu.be/91s2PriCCfY?si=VaB7BiCKnZKLGxzQ

Local workshops are testing loads against FPV drones. And this is an another example of the bird shot effectiveness against the drone.
Chase started from 100 meters distance. Shooter had a semi auto shotgun (model unknown) and bird shots tuned to work with that shotgun. There were three hits during the chase but only that "20 meters" was an effective one. All three hit the camera optics. Only the closest one crashed it.
Conclusion: If you could not hit the camera optics from around 20 meters - then you are totaled. And even if you hit it then shrapnel from the drone explosion will make you wounded beyond repair.
Do not go with a bird shot against FPV.
CockpitEnthusiast@reddit
wtf are we supposed to use then
gage_slides@reddit
Tungsten bird shot
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
We are testing. I will report once we have an optimal solution.
usernamealreadytakeh@reddit
Have you guys tried buck shot?
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
Yes we did. Problem is spreading. Experiments test different projectile sizes and bounding media
CockpitEnthusiast@reddit
What gauges are you trying with? 20/12/10? Have to imagine 10 may be more effective
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
You can get 12ga here. Smaller calibers are close to extinction. Bigger calibers are not allowed for gun shops.
ThePretzul@reddit
Time to build some punt guns
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
Bombarda maxima )))))
Mdp2pwackerO2@reddit
Maybe something like a bolo round? Seems like it’d be pretty effective at at least tangling the rotors
Terrestrial_Conquest@reddit
What about 4 buck?
Maybe even target loads? Less energy but more spread, could potentially disable the rotors.
You should try out TSS turkey loads too.
McSavage-101@reddit
I think the TSS turkey loads would be very very interesting to test out. Also waterfowl loads with sheet shot and a tight choke.
Thee_Sinner@reddit
Are you loading your own shells or using off-the-shelf stuff?
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
Those were loads.
Thee_Sinner@reddit
Ive not done it, but Ive had the idea of designing and printing a jig to cut unslit wads so they perform like flitecontrol. If you can make it work, this would greatly reduce the spread at range.
CockpitEnthusiast@reddit
F
Teckton013@reddit
Have you considered using drone shot?
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
Yup
Severbrix@reddit
Try turkey loads if your guns can handle 3 inch shells and choke em down with a full choke. You should be able to get out to 40 yards with that.
shreddedsharpcheddar@reddit
have yall tried turkey shot? usually stainless steel pellets with a tighter pattern and some more velocity
Andrew_Jackson_v2@reddit
Goose and duck loads are steel. Turkey are usually lead still.
thatnyeguyisfly@reddit
Net shot
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
Yup
thatnyeguyisfly@reddit
Just need to figure out how to fit it in a 12ga round
Alarmed-Owl2@reddit
Do you have access to flechettes?
FlamingSpitoon433@reddit
I bet #4 Buck would work
RagnarLongdick@reddit
Buck shot or whatever bubba loads waffen and his buddies come up with
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
Effective countermeasures at this point are: Jammer 99%, Shotgun 0.9%, AK\AR 0.1%. We want to push the shotgun effectiveness up to 2%.
Teckton013@reddit
Tell me more about the jammer?
norightsbutliberty@reddit
Nothing. Asking how to fight a drone with a shotgun is like asking how to fight an shotgun with a sword.
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
We have too many lucky bastards which saved their asses with shotguns. So we will stay on this course. The problem is to get a more effective load for that.
racistlarper@reddit
Wonder if waterfowl 3 inch magnum steel shot would be better for penetration on drones at further distances while getting the spread you need
adecapria@reddit
Would the bird shot not detonate the munition on the drone? Or is this video game logic?
derg_Alois@reddit
Most modern explosives are very stable you can light c4 on fire and it will not explode afaik.
Andrew_Jackson_v2@reddit
By bird shot what do you mean? What size? #8 and #6 both count as bird shot but so does BBB. If you’re using a light target load yes it will be very ineffective until it’s too close. A 3.5” B or #1 goose load would give you a good pattern and a much farther distance.
I’m thinking a 3” #4 2oz turkey load might be the sweet spot, at the expense of recoil (and cost). Lots of pellets, still lead pellets so the energy carries better, but still small enough pellets to give a fairly wide pattern. I’ve had success with that as a 3rd shell in a pheasant gun and dropped them at some very far distances.
Good luck either way.
emurange205@reddit
Choke?
davin_bacon@reddit
I'd suggest using waterfowl loads out of a waterfowl shotgun with a long barrel, it'll pattern better at distance. It'd be a hassle to carry though.
RunningOnCaffeine@reddit
Perhaps something like chainshot needs to make a return.
Addendum_Healthy@reddit
How effective do you think flechette rounds would be against drones? I mean in theory they may fly a longer distance in a tighter pattern I think.
Independent_Group240@reddit
I’m eager to check back and see what you guys have found as an effective solution after your tests! Thank you for your hard work OP
is_it_random@reddit
Lame. Maybe you guys need to try a spear like that dude at a renaissance fair. Jk, good job guys.
Yankee_on_vanisle@reddit
What choke? What gauge? What size shot and or powder charge?
Are you saying a full choke on a 3" or 3.5" magnum 12ga couldn't stop it until 20m?
What about some of the more gimiky goose and duck loads?
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
Low brass, 12ga half choke. We are maxing what a Turkish semi auto can swallow. Everything bigger than that destroys BTS-12
Flywolfpack@reddit
Does barrel length play into it?
Yankee_on_vanisle@reddit
It could, a longer barrel can increase velocity and it makes pointing more accurate.
Andrew_Jackson_v2@reddit
The velocity impact is pretty minimal. Shotguns mostly top out 11-12”. But yeah the longer barrel makes it easier to aim and track
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
I have no idea
MaritalGrape@reddit
Yeah, you're gonna want higher velocity turkey loads for sure
Thee_Sinner@reddit
AFAIK, low vs high brass is basically just a marketing thing nowadays; it does not necessarily tell whether a shell is loaded hot or not.
Preact5@reddit
Man.
If I was gonna guess, a 10 gauge with slightly larger shot than bird shot would be the move.
beniciodelhomo@reddit
As a long time duck hunter I have been screaming this at all the people buying 18” barrel shotguns, no choke, and #8 shot saying is for their “drone kit”, YOUR GONNA HELP IT KILL YOU. I would be interested to see what a 28” barrel, kicks high flyer full choke, and #2 or BB(whatever brand patterns best out of that gun because it’s all different) looks like
beniciodelhomo@reddit
Winchester #2 blindside has Been the best steel shot and farthest touching shell I’ve used, the square shot design has a better chance of penetrating and doing damage on flesh and I bet the same would be true for electronics/plastic but Lead and tungsten shot will give better performance than steel
emurange205@reddit
What choke was used?
0045MDX@reddit
Have you watched taofledermaus on youtube? They test a lot of homemade shotgun loads. Might help you out.
HarvEx1RCR@reddit
If you’re able to get a better shotgun, get one with a 3.5” chamber and a 24”+ barrel. The extra payload in the shell and barrel length may help some. Try a mix of #2 and #4 lead shot, it’s a pretty solid waterfowl load so may translate to drone well. And try both modified and full chokes.
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
Try to operate that 24'' out of the military vehicle or a dugout )))))
HarvEx1RCR@reddit
Lol valid point!
TyroneBiggummms@reddit
Do you hand load? I'm wondering if 2 fishing weights crimped on about a foot or two of fishing line x whatever amount of this combo would fit in a 3 or 3.5 inch shell. In my head it seems like it may be more effective than the nets if they will fly well. No idea IRL though. Just an idea.
Bradadonasaurus@reddit
Chain shot from cannons was highly effective at destroying ship rigging, same general theory applies.
oG-Purple@reddit
Have you seen this older thread
https://www.reddit.com/r/ForgottenWeapons/s/co5LZUVVDj
cheesekola@reddit
It’s probably going to take some sort of dual barrel high gauge buckshot in semi if you could please and thank you make that
FormerStuff@reddit
Could you mix in smaller tungsten to help with patterning and less shot deformation?
kreme-machine@reddit
You guys experimented with net rounds yet? Here in the states I’ve seen them for 12ga. I do know that they’re pretty easy to diy though. AWCY has a file for them in the thump & grind release. IDK how you guys feel about 3d printed stuff, but it could at least be something to test for proof of concept.
budabai@reddit
Shire luck?

Sesemebun@reddit
What sizes of birdshot have you used? T and #12 will be very different. Nice PFP btw
BantedWaff@reddit (OP)
Those test loads used #5 (3mm) and #5+1 (3 and 4 mm mix)
centurion762@reddit
Maybe Flite Control loads would help
ProudDudeistPriest@reddit
Got that hobbit Shire luck? They made it to Mordor, so your probably good.
