Getting into shooting
Posted by Germy_1114@reddit | Firearms | View on Reddit | 29 comments
Hey all,
I just turned 18 and am possibly interested in shooting for sport/guns as a hobby. Neither of my parents are gun owners so I don’t have a lot of guidance as how to do this. Also I live in Oregon, so I can’t buy handguns until I’m 21.
Any tips on how to get into the hobby at my age?

Do you have any friends that own firearms? Thats how several of my friends got into shooting. You can also try out different guns and see what you like best. Also let someone shiw you safety rules and handling

Like everyone else is saying, take a class. You'll be amazed how ready everyone is to help you out and teach you how to be safe.

I disagree with buying a 10/22 because it’s still a firearm for your age and you’re not going to get anything out of buying any firearm you don’t know how to train with, so instead, start solo-training and invest in training aids that will help you actually be a good shooter, instead of a person with a gun. Get a SIRT pistol with the green laser first and a airsoft pistol(gas blowback); IWB or OWB holster; pact timer(or shooting app) and IPSC cardboard targets and paint the A zone orange. Your green laser will show up yellow on orange to verify hits and YouTube is free. The airsoft gun is to help you work on mechanics. It’s not hard to be an advance shooter by the time you legally age to own a firearm. A lot of folks by a gun first and then training aids later and you’re in the perfect position to avoid that mistake. Another note, now’s the time to train and learn the legal parameters of self-defense, because when you become of age you’ll get excited about buying a gun and the last thing you’ll want to do is buy a safe; consider self-defense insurance; laminate your ccw; and do all the unsexy stuff, at least for awhile.

Would recommend a Ruger 10/22 with iron sights for this, which just so happens to be one of the best guns for a new shooter(and very reasonably priced last time I checked).

Everyone needs, and seems to have, a 10/22.

Came here to recommend this!

I would go with an m&p 15-22 over a 10/22. Mine has been reliable with a lot more ammunition types than my 10/22. The magazines are cheap, and many accessories will transfer between the 15-22 and a future ar 15. Yes, it's definitely not the most durrable. It pays for that being lightweight and a lot of fun. Over the years I've turned it into a real hot rod by changing almost all the factory parts.

I recommend YouTube and search Paul Harrell.

Go to a range and take a private lesson. Don't buy anything until you get some basic safety/handling instruction.

Is there a gun club near you? Join it, participate, and you'll meet people.
The club I am a member of has indoor 22 bullseye leagues during winter, including for 10/22 rifle.
There are people in my club who do all sorts of shooting from competition pistol to skeet and trap to long distance rifle. Once you get wired in, you'll meet people who give you guidance and suggest classes and so forth.

A nice pellet gun is cheap, easy, no problems to obtain. You can start with that.

Take a introduction training class, go to your local gun range they probably have one.
Know your laws, handgunlaw.us is my source for gun laws by state https://handgunlaw.us/states/oregon.pdf
Buy your first firearm, like many others here have said the Ruger 10/22 is one of the best choices for a first time gun owner.
Train as much as possible, even when you can't go to the range dry fire is free.

r/ORGuns is a good subreddit for you

Buy a a rifle that shoots .22LR (long rifle). Very affordable and great to learn on with no recoil and no large muzzle blast. Workers at gun counters are always very helpful.

Maybe a pistol caliber carbine in 9mm? Rifle handling with more affordable ammo. But it won't have rifle power since it would be shooting a pistol cartridge. Go to your local gun stores and see if they offer classes. A ruger 10/22 would be very affordable and ammo is super cheap too

Take a class. Buy a 10/22, join a local gun range. Try to be nice and courteous. You'll make friends as you goto the range more. Before you know it, you'll have gun friends!
A "first gun" is such a broad topic. You'll find a million answers. But nothing will serve you cheap fun like a 10/22. And if you think a 22 is "boring", imagine how fun it is to afford to go to the range every week because you only shoot $5 a box ammo.

Yes, .22lr shooting is so fun and cheap!
The 10/22 is easy, fun, and reliable to shoot.
Civil-Captain-2671@reddit
My 22s are some of my most expensive guns. Most of my friends don't like them because "Hurr it's like a bb gun". And then their broke asses goto the range like three times a year. Meanwhile I got weeks I'm going 3x. If you want it as an actual hobby, you pick the choice that you can afford to actually engage with the hobby. At the end of the day, what different does it make if the hole is a 22 cal or a 7.62? I'm here to participate and get better.
divok1701@reddit
I totally agree. Pretty much every gun I've been looking at has been .22lr except one pistol for concealed carry and a shotgun for the occasional clay shooting event or hunt that goes on.
I really want a Henry Golden Boy, and since I found they make it in .22lr, that one is on my list!

Depending on state laws take your CCW class, and ask around for shooting clubs or events. Good luck
Hot-Win2571@reddit
Did the law change? Looks like it's 18 to purchase, and 21 to conceal. Well, I'm seeing 18 for firearms, and don't know if handguns are restricted elsewhere.
Ornery_Secretary_850@reddit
It's been 21 to purchase a handgun since 1968.
Hot-Win2571@reddit
Are you referring to the federal law which restricts handgun sales by an FFL? Does that apply to sales or gifts not done by an FFL?
Kromulent@reddit
Take a beginner class! That's what they are for.
You'll learn how to shoot, good gun handling skills, safe storage, all the legal stuff, and you'll get to try out some different gun on the range.
Call your local range or the biggest gun store nearby and they can hook you up.

after you get a firearm. Join a gunclub The majority of the members there are more than happy to share their knowledge

Until you take some courses, you can self-educate about gun safety and self-defense issues.

Check your local laws. In Tennessee handgun purchases at dealers are restricted to people 21 and up but if you are not a prohibited person you can purchase private party and even open carry legally. Again, check your local laws.
