ULPT Request: Being bullied by two coworkers who seem determined to make work miserable – need advice
Posted by a90ne@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 69 comments
I’m being bullied by two coworkers, Susan and Ashley. Susan is about 20 years older than me, and Ashley is around my age. When I first started, Susan had just left (she was on a contract), but she came back after two years. During those two years, work was great. Since she’s returned, though, things have gotten pretty bad.
It seems like Susan didn’t like me from the start, and I later found out she was even trying to get me fired. Now that she’s back, she and Ashley seem to share this dislike for me and actively exclude me from the department I was already part of. Ashley even lies about me and my work and tries to turn other coworkers against me. Together, they work in tandem to make things harder for me.
I’m honestly not sure how to handle it and would appreciate any advice.

If this pertains to you, start seeing therapists and doctors for work induced anxiety due to the harrasment and bullying going on. Apply for FMLA and let your employer know you got FMLA due to the stress caused by their two employees. Now you can claim FMLA retaliation if they ever decide to fire you especially if your employee evals have been consistently good.
Document everything they've said and done with dates and witnesses. Then submit a formal HR complaint and keep documenting everything. All correspondance should be via email. Everything submitted to HR must be factual and not emotionally charged.
Vs
Another avenue is to let your supervisor know via phone call or verbally. When you're finished speaking with them, let them know you will recap your conversation via email to not blind side them. Supervisors are required to act on allegations of workplace harrasment.

Thank you. I will do this

This! I didn’t want to have to document everything, but now I wish I had.

Report to HR - Bullying and Harassment
Keep it objective. Less “wagh wagh Ashley doesn’t like me”. More “Ashley is spreading false rumours about me such as X Y Z, she’s excluding me from meetings such as A B C, and she’s making it difficult for me to do my job. Drop in words like bullying, harassment, unsafe, vulnerable, abusive.”
And… when they inevitably flip their shit because you reported them, make sure you record and report that too.

not an unethical tip, try again

"Hostile work environment"
Jaded_yank@reddit
All you need to say: “I feel unsafe”
strangelove4564@reddit
HR: "Which party do we let go of to make this problem go away? Who is more expendable?"
Jpa95@reddit
Hostile Work Environment is only legally defined if they are targeting you based on a protected class.
ironicmirror@reddit
Isn't bitch a protected class?
diamondpredator@reddit
Be careful using this phrase as, in a lot of cases, this is a legal term and requires that the legal definition fits.
tmfink10@reddit
"this work environment feels hostile" - not sure why someone reporting something to HR needs to be careful about using words that may not be technically correct in legal terms. That's HR's job to figure out what it is and isn't.
diamondpredator@reddit
Because a lazy HR department will use "hostile work environment" as a legal term if applicable. They'll pull out the paperwork that relates to that claim, check the requirements against what you've reported, and determine that it does not meet them.
Claiming a hostile work environment can make the company liable as well so they protect themselves first. Remember, HR isn't there for you, they're not your friends. HR is there to protect the company from liabilities.
I've literally seen this happen. I have friends that are attorneys and one that is an HR rep that have confirmed this for me in my state. You can check your own laws.
I'm just giving advice to people so they can get the best help possible.
MillenialRasta@reddit
Good advice, very ethical tho.
WeRegretToInform@reddit
True, but it’s also a good first step for anything unethical. You get the first word in, it puts them on the defensive.
You get it on the record that this person makes up lies about you. A record based in truth.
Then if you do anything less ethical later… well of course they made it up. They do that. Just ask HR. Nobody is gonna believe you put liquid ass in their chair.
MillenialRasta@reddit
That's very smart honestly didn't see it that way
crashcondo@reddit
it's unethical because it's ethical?
Odd-Solid-5135@reddit
Check the rules in your state. Mine for instance is a single party Informed state mea ing if I'm recording my interaction with someone I have no legal obligation to inform them of such. Record every interaction, save the valuable ones for your case.
RichCanary@reddit
That's hardly unethical life advice. So I'll add to that. Make the complaint relating to Sexual Harassment.
"I overheard Susan saying (some really raunchy things about another co-worker). I told her it was inappropriate, and asked her to stop. Since that time, I've been excluded from meetings, etc., etc."
Jonny_rhodes@reddit
Unless HR tries to say you’re being racist … Before you’ve even mentioned who’s bullying you (“Are you sure this isn’t because he’s Indian ?” “Actually he’s Pakistani” “Same thing really” “Really isn’t though …”)
WeRegretToInform@reddit
I’m going to take a leap here, and say that neither Ashley or Susan are likely to be Indian or Pakistani nationals using “he” pronouns.
KilTheTransformers@reddit
Did you just assume their gender and nationality? You're a racist bigot.

Record, record, record.

Figure out a way to turn them against each other ...
Start with little things like taking one's office supplies and leaving it on the others desk.
If they put food in a break room fridge wait till whoever comes in last and then swap the shelves around so it looks like the other person is being petty. Create a rumor that they each make more then the other ..
No-Possible-6643@reddit
Throw a brick really fast at one of them, people are allergic to fast bricks

Just order a Hitman, remember to cover your money trails and make it confusing as hell for the Law enforcement to understand.
Or you can pay the Hitman in Cash which is kinda untraceable. Crypto works the best.
As an HR, kill the shit Outta her.
Ok-Context3615@reddit
Document everything and be friends with the other coworkers. Can you document the lies she told? What did she say, to whom, and when? Did she definitely know it was a lie, or can she claim she just misunderstood?
Prudii_Skirata@reddit
Freeze a can of shaving cream. Open the bottom with a can opener and drop the contents in one of their desk drawers and close it. Sit back and watch while it thaws and expands inside the drawer?

quietly tell your peers that Susan is the person stealing everyone's food from the fridge in the break room. You think she's just being mean to you because she knows you've seen her take stuff on more than one occasion.

Understand the toxic workplace may not be corrected in the near term. Take care of yourself first. Find another job if you can. A few people behaving this way “out in the open” aren’t concealing their behavior rather flaunting it to a checked out manager/supervisor- this does not bode well for you —-if those in power don’t really care about your well being and don’t seem to care about overall reduction in productivity that aligns to a work group in these type scenarios. It’s awful to find yourself a target and I am sorry this is happening. I am not a fan of reaching to HR unless it’s during the exit interview.

When it comes to direct bullying at work, the easiest move is to just make it not fun for them; they say some mean shit to you, just respond with some cold professionalism like "I dont see how thats relevant to this assignment." Or "I don't think that's appropriate for the work place."
It sets them up to get themselves in trouble.
For this type of backstabbing bullshit, shine a bright light on it. Record specific instances and file HR complaints, and always always always practice CYA: cover your ass. Don't leave opportunities for others to get you in trouble.
lilydlux@reddit
Document the harassment. Date, time, event. As previous posted said, keep it neutral. Keep a folder of emails/messages from perps. Also document your actions, eg if you were out sick you could not have done x. Keep a record of calls. “I spoke wit X on date/time and we determined x” It’s a big fat pain and will take time but you will not be floundering for evidence.
But - this is an EPT.
pushpushstruggle@reddit
Go to your boss/HR. Life's too long to be bullied at work. These women are cowards and will fold once they are confronted. It's a story as old as time.
I had the same thing when I was young. Melanie and Debbie, two absolute harpies, had it in for me and I didn't entertain that nonsense for a second. Went to my boss. She went to THE boss. Never heard from those two again.
Classic-Milk7195@reddit
You're probably on camera. Get some small bottles like eye drops and fill them with...when you walk by their area don't move your arms or shoulders, so on camera it will look like nothing. Be aware of the direction, stream just like you was taking a piss. Try to have fun but be like Spock when they're around you.

Send them on a 1 way busines strip to Bealize
FaithlessnessSea5383@reddit
Note to self: bully people at work more to get free trips to tropical destinations.
Question: can one make requests?
Stevemcqueef6969@reddit
You wouldn’t want this type of trip to Bealize and you missed the WW/\BB reference
FaithlessnessSea5383@reddit
Well aware and completely okay with the terms.

crashcondo@reddit
You need to get political. Build allies and start spreading rumors about them. To find allies start with anyone else they are harassing or making life difficult for.
Seed rumors, like you've seen them stealing company resources, or clocking each other out, or whatever would be considered really bad economically for your company.

Just go to HR. Even if they don’t really help it starts a paper trail. If the harassment continues just keep filing complaints. If the company doesn’t do anything about it you can get a lawyer and do some damage if need be
omgkelwtf@reddit
When you're alone with one of them one day, "oh no, I think you sat in something! There's something on your pants."
Was there? Idk maybe it was a shadow. Eyes are crazy sometimes lol
Also, mysterious smells around the office when you're alone with them. Hard to describe, kind of BO and rotten egg smelling. Make a face every time you pass her, "it's strong in this hallway today. I can't believe you don't smell that."
throw123454321purple@reddit
I gotta be honest: it’s not illegal in the workplace to be an asshole, and HR doesn’t really care about your situation unless the two are doing something illegal that puts your company at risk (and even then, HR will try to get rid of you along with them). This is the harsh reality of working with adults: you are not the problem, yet your life gets upended by this crap, even if you do the right thing.
Here’s what you can do. Go to YT on look up employment lawyer Brannigam Robertson’s video series on hostile work environments for more information about what it technically is and is not, what you can do to protect yourself, and to see if you have a case.
Do not go to HR yet unless you see something immediately dangerous—like a work condition where something might physically blow up—to yourself and others.
If HR tries to get you to sign an NDA in exchange for a payout and your resignation, do not sign it until you get a free consult with an employment lawyer, as they sometimes can get your many times that number.
Now onto the unethical parts. Do you live in a one-party consent state when it comes to recording audio and video in secret? If so, get cracking on the hidden recording devices so you can catch them in the act of saying or doing disparaging (or even illegal) things in the workplace, both when you’re present and not. (If you’re in a two-party-consent state, don’t do this, as you could face charges and any evidence you collect would be inadmissible.)
eatingmyfist@reddit
Sounds like you're a fully grown adult. Try not worrying about the mean girls at work.
