Make it legal to run from the police

Was watching some high speed chases the other day and thought “wow these guys are stupid why would they even try to run” but then I realized there not running from police cause they want to avoid a ticket, they are running from the police because they know regardless of what happens they are still getting locked up, the main reason I thought about this was because if you have warrants or something illegal in your car, if you go about it nicely your going to jail, if you go about it aggressively your going to jail, after the police find everything out that will most likely be the last time your a free man, most forms of breaking the law, almost all of them involve a person just having to pay a bunch of money and basically saying they promise not to do it again, but getting pulled over, the only way to stay a free man, is to run, obviously if they hurt someone els or cause damages then yeah they should be arrested regardless, but I feel there should be a 10 minute window you have to jump through if the police are still tailgating you after 10 minutes then yeah you should get arrested instantly

I don’t understand how your solution addresses your problem, could you explain please?
Stilt11_@reddit (OP)
It’s mostly based on the situation obviously not eveyone deserves the slightest chance at being free, but for most cases of getting arrested or in trouble with the law you can have a lawyer attempt to have you serve no time, get a ticket, the police handled a situation wrong. Most situations you have one way or another of getting out of the situation and completely walking away. Now when it comes to being pulled over you could have no warrants or have any reason to serve time, or this could be your last straw, regardless there is absolutely no chance of you getting out of that situation, the only option would running and making a successful get away. I’m not saying eveyone should automatically get a chance at still being a free man but if you have something that illegal in your car regardless of what you do your going to be locked up, so since you already have promised jail time running should be legal because they are already getting arrested regardless if they sit there and cooperate the only chance of them staying free is to run, if you run and get caught your going to sever most likely 10+ years of time, you run and escape that was your last shot at not being behind bars for most likely a majority of your life.

Dude had to be high playing Need For Speed when he wrote this
Stilt11_@reddit (OP)
High? And driving? Are you kidding? That’s the wrong kind of thing to put on someone man… obviously drunk would be the right term for wanting to grab your keys come on now no one wants to drive while high

This is indeed a craxy idea. The law is pointless if it isnt enforced, and if nothing is enforced we will 100% be worse off the longer it goes on. Making it legal to run from LE just makes things more difficult for police, more expensive to tax payers, and is risky for innocent bystanders.
Warrants of arrest are generally only issued for serious crimes, or for higher dollar amounts. In other words, people that really need to see consequences for their actions in the interest of keeping our society polite.
-I_I@reddit
Are you stupid? Warrants are issued for unpaid parking tickets.
Latter-Code-314@reddit
I dont appreciate being called stupid.
I've never heard of a warrant being issued for parking tickets, but I'll look into it, thanks for sharing that bit of information.

I agree, that’s why I said if anyone causes damages or puts anyone in danger they should automatically get that right taken away, but if someone has a smooth escape from something like having drugs in there car or illegal fire arms etc I think they should be allowed to try that escape route because it’s literally there only chance
Jugales@reddit
I forget which European country (want to say Sweden?) but there is a right to escape from prison, technically. It is the responsibility of the prison system to keep to prisoner there, instead of the responsibility of the prisoner to stay there.
luciusDaerth@reddit
Germany. The thinking is that human nature is to desire freedom, and you cannot criminalize human nature. But yea, if I beat a cop on my way out the door, that's more than just yearning to be free and I will be prosecuted accordingly. Not a lawyer or a German, but I studied German for a time and this was discussed. It may be the case in some Scandinavian nations as well, but I do not know.
OneGladTurtle@reddit
Little note: trying to escape from prison is in itself not illegal. However, all laws you break trying to escape from prison will add to your sentence. And as you cannot realistically escape from prison without breaking laws, escaping is practically illegal.
gmegme@reddit
What if I suicide away?
Sarctoth@reddit
Suicide is Illegal is some countries
OneGladTurtle@reddit
That ain't illegal, so fine I guess

7HawksAnd@reddit
That’s why they have a chaplain in jail, so your learn about the other laws for dead people
AttorneyAny1765@reddit
you save the taxpayers a dime
Curlaub@reddit
Uh, absconding is absolutely a crime
SanargHD@reddit
That would be Germany. Not sure if any other countries do this as well though.
Upset-Basil4459@reddit
They've come a long way since 1945, they used to shoot prisoners who tried to escape
Quirky-Plantain-2080@reddit
It’s pretty much every country with a civil code (so not Ireland and the UK). You have a right to escape, but you do not have a right to commit crimes in the escape.
So, tunnel through a wall? Destruction of property.
Hit a guard? Assault and battery.
Escape vehicle? Theft and probably speeding.
But if you’re an X-Man and can teleport through walls, technically you won’t be charged for a crime because you’re mentally incompetent (because you could teleport through walls, how the fuck did you get caught?)
FunkyFr3d@reddit
It’s basic human nature to not want to be a prisoner
AttorneyAny1765@reddit
i disagree i learn for the psych ward
il_biciclista@reddit
I'm okay with this as long as the runner is on foot.
Running from the cops in a car is extremely dangerous, and should not be legalized or normalized.
SanargHD@reddit
The person can run away from the police. Any laws he breaks in doing so (speeding, red lights, dangerous or reckless driving, etc.) just continue to be crimes. If he follows all traffic laws, or laws about trespassing, then the act of trying to get away from the police shouldn't constitute a crime in of itself.
uuullluuul@reddit
This is the case in Germany as long you dont hurt the police officers is not a crime to run away
ddollarsign@reddit
Maybe the cops and runner should both have to pull over so the chase can proceed on foot.
7HawksAnd@reddit
Maybe they should agree to meet up at a track field and race for freedom vs jail. You could even televise it. Maybe some people could choose the sport they want to fight in, or an animal to fight in place of the cops. Could maybe even build a colosseum instead of a jail to house these new freedom games.
Stilt11_@reddit (OP)
You might have a million dollar idea lmao, and the people in the vehicle that ran that where not the driver have to coach or bet on who they think is going to win, if they fail they go along with them lmao
dirtmother@reddit
I mean; police car chases are getting rarer.
With drones, helicopters, and facial recognition, they don't really HAVE to follow you that far, when they have your general direction and car information.
Really just depends how badly they want you, right this second.
Carthuluoid@reddit
Name checks out?
AttorneyAny1765@reddit
soooo… what about pedos?
Stilt11_@reddit (OP)
They need to make laws loosely around pedos and basically give cops the right to do whatever they need to put them away, I was referring to if you get pulled over and have warrants for things you’d only get taken in for if you where to get pulled over, pedos should be taken away in any location on foot or in a vehicle, there should be no chance of escaping for them.
SamWillGoHam@reddit
I don't think this comment deserved to be downvoted, but I think OP was referring to people who commit traffic violations or who have warrants related to their car
Nahalitet@reddit
They should also make it illegal not to put fullstops in sentences.

In Washington state, they have a law against police chases. Police cannot follow criminals on high speed chases and have to fall back. I know a couple people that were followed a couple miles into Idaho that made an attempt to get back into Washington to avoid arrest. So I’m pretty sure what you’re suggesting exists in a way.
Stilt11_@reddit (OP)
I live very far from Washington but if I ever get into a high speed chase and make it there it will be pretty bad ass
Ablomis@reddit
A counter option: running from police is life sentence.
So now your options are: to go to a prison for a little bit (or maybe end up woth probation) or to go for life.
But it’s Reddit: committing crimes is considered ok here.
HarveyMushman72@reddit
High-speed chases are too risky for everyone, you can't outrun a radio, though.
Huberweisse@reddit
It's legal in Germany
Corduroy_Sazerac@reddit
Make it compulsory to run from the police. Make them work for an arrest, and let us see how much they want it.
liberal_texan@reddit
The bodycam footage would make a great show.
