The haka is so overdone. It’s fascinating watching what should normally be a neat and unique cultural expression slowly go through devaluation from overuse. New Zealand started doing it at rugby games and have been trying to fit it into everything else they possibly can since.
It's very forced. I think NZ is trying to have its own "thing" internationally. I mean, if it wasn't for the Haka what would they even have? The only other thing I remember about NZ is that there was a crazy mosque shooting there a few years back
To be fair we (one guy, from NZ, but sure, we'll take credit) did split the atom - Ernest Rutherford. Short lived, and the Rutherford model was quickly replaced by Bohr, but I think this is slightly more of a contribution than a painful 10 hour trilogy.
We also gave the world Serato (DJ software) which was getting people dancing while taking drugs - for several years before Pioneer went all Rekordbox on people.
Commercializing bungee jumping? A NZer.
Eggbeaters? A NZer. Disposable syringes? NZer.
We also make cheese and wine, but hardly original. Damn it, are we really just Lord of the Rings to you?
Honestly, they were fine with not having a thing. All the Anglophone countries are shitbogs once you squint longer than 5 seconds at them, NZ is actually the better in that regard. Boring is good. Boring isn't "school shootings" or "crumbling infrastructure" or "massively racist but just calls it 'being direct'".
As a New Zealander I can say this: as a nation we are extremely anxious about being taken seriously and are extremely keen to be well liked. These two impulses can run into conflict with each other, but can be seen in the haka: it's a war dance & therefore serious, but also unique to the Maori culture (if you forget about all the other Pasifika cultures)
They let public reaction get to their heads. It’s how all black dudes in Europe and America automatically think they are some kind of authority on coolness, because the media and boomers keep portraying them as such
Tribes aren't going to war anymore so when else are you supposed to use it?
Sports where you're playing for your country, and protests against the government making changes to indigenous treaty principles seem like fine places to use them.
Actual new zealander here - so this isnt “the leftist” party. Its Te Pati Maori which for you burgers is basically a political party representing native americans.
Because NZ has mixed parliament representation, minor parties get seats to represent their constituents. TPM is broadly considered, even by a lot of maori, to not represent their interests very well.
The haka here was a bit performative but given that it was at a hearing abouty treaty reform (similar importance to constitution for burgers, but deals with native rights) its not super surprising.
And let me guess: they obviously don’t reach the minimum number of votes to get an MP seat in the parliament but because of le representation of minorities they get to have one and not only make demands but also ridicule themselves with their stupid regional dances
I mean i guess it depends on where you sit with valuing indigenous peoples inputs. Honestly I don’t mind the haka and traditions. Its better than erasure that a lot of other places have done to their indigenous population.
They aren’t that disruptive to due process in parliament (no, doing a haka over a bill strongly related to essentially our founding document is fine imo). They still have to participate as equals in pariament votes, etc. they just functionally have at least 1 seat for “free” so there isn’t an erasure of their input.
But i also understand getting 4channers to understand this stuff isn pretty pointless. Look at what a stain aboriginals are in aus because they’ve been kicked around for hundreds of years instead of being allowed to maintain some semblance of their culture.
Except it's not just mmp since they were no where near the 5% threshold to get in, it's the exclusive Maori only electorates giving them literal free rides to parliment
Also worth mentioning that the suggested law under consideration won't be passed and sent to the Governor-General for ascent. It's passed the first of three readings and is expected to be voted down by what, 105-15 at the second reading? It's dead in the water but had to put forth due to coalition negotiations.
On the one hand this is an informative comment. On the other hand I read this in what I presume to be your accent and it made me laugh. Thank you based local kiwi.
They'll make utterly outrageous demands of you, then go into a meltdown, gnashing teeth and crying when you won't instantly give them everything they want.
Look at this individual. She's protesting an "indigenous treaty bill."
What are her issues with it. Does she have any alternative to offer, other than an utterly facile demand for white people to leave and return the land to those who occupied it before?
It must be so easy being these people. No thought required on anything. Simply apply the insidious lense of intersectionality and make up your mind from ther.
It must be easier being you. Oh indigenous person, they're wrong! She isn't protesting an indigenous treaty bill, she is protesting vast changes to the existing treaty
Example 1 - Removing Maori Health Authority
Was established to address inequalities for indigenous population within the healthcare system
Example 2 - Repeal the smokefree act
Phase out smoking for future generations. Government wants to bring it back so they can collect tax from tobacco sales
Example 3 - Restoring 3 strikes law
Was removed because it had no effect on crime rate and resulted in overly harsh automatic prison sentences.
Etc etc, there's a whole heap more. You could just have looked this up yourself but I guess the insidious lense of intersectionality is a bit easier right?
She is literally protesting the treaty principles bill. While you raise valid concerns, these are not what is being discussed here. Maori have representation in Parliament, so they can contribute democratically to discussion around these issues - and no one [with any say at least] is proposing that this ceases.
None of those things you mention are in the Treaty of Waitangi. It is the Treaty and its interpretation that is what this bill is about. Valid points for a different discussion, but on this matter, they are irrelevant.
People shouldn't be allowed to have a smoke if they want!!! Everyone needs to do exactly what I want at all times. The coercive power of the state should be used to enforce specific behaviours at all times!! But ONLY when they're behaviours I oppose, in all other circumstances, it should be "my body, my choice!"
This heckin' study by Professor Crimeapologistberg shows that 3 strikes laws don't work! Putting recidivist criminals in prison where they can't commit crimes doesn't actually stop them committing crimes!!
Example 1 - Removing Maori Health Authority
Was established to address inequalities for indigenous population within the healthcare system
And let me guess, it has achieved literally no improvement in outcomes despite vast amounts of money pumped in?
It's literally just funny walking and lound shouting. At least something like the ancient greek Pyrrhike was a way to teach moneuvers for the phalanx and battle stances, this just does nothing but make you silly.
It doesn't do nothing if you follow it up with actual violence, since it's supposedly to be a war dance. Not so silly if you associate it with being brutally killed. Of course, that kind of thing doesn't really happen anymore.
If it's "just funny walking and loud shouting" then do it yourself?????
It's a fucking dance with cultural significance and one of the few things that remain of the native culture right now, unless your goal is the total eradication of the native peoples of NZ (which if it is, come on man there's gotta be more entertaining groups of people to eradicate the culture of. Who the fuck gives a shit about NZ natives?) it should still be kept.
"was" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there homie.
This isn't "go back" this is "keep". That's a huge difference.
They do not want to "go back" to their original culture, they want to "keep" what little is left so they at least have a semblance of their original identity. It's already well known that attempts to make people "go back" to their original culture backfire heavily, especially if a dominant culture has existed for a very long time (see: Liberia).
First they want to keep, then they want to "restore"some old traditions, then they ciment those old traditions, then comes the "we have always been like this why are you trying to oppress our culture", then they start the cycle again, spreading around. Which is funny, because they wont doubt to destroy your culture and burn it to ashes at any chance.
You still dont get how this kind of people work their way around, dont you?
Just because you might want to see some aspects of your culture returning doesn't mean everyone wants to see all aspects of their culture returning.
If we apply your argument to white culture then what you're arguing is that the belief that white people want to upkeep the promotion of Christianity in white culture which will lead to some white people wanting to "restore" the klan. Then when people inevitably argue that restoring the klan is a bad idea these white Christians will burn down everything to destroy non-Christian culture because we're oppressing their culture apparently.
I think you can see it's a bit of a fucking jump to go from "Oh we just want to promote Christianity" to "We want to restore the Ku Klux Klan". Likewise, it's a bit of a jump to go from "we want to keep our dance" to "we want to go back to eating babies".
Moral lesson: Pretty much everyone in the modern day agrees that in general every culture that rose from before the year 1900 sucked balls and nobody wants to go back to 19th-century cultures (unless you think persecution for being the wrong kind of Christian is a fun time)
I don't give a shit realy, they can do whatever they like, just don't expect me to take any country seriously where a politicans can just stop the whole government dead in its track by doing a shitty dance on their senate floor over some inane piece of law. It's not even about the dance per se, if some guy did a folkdance in my goverment then I know I'd be realy upset with that.
Watching the initial clip, the dance was done at the end of debate where there wasn't going to be any debating happening to begin with. It was a hail mary to show unity from the Maori that all the MPs that support them do not like this bill.
From what I've heard so far, it did seem to work too. There are a couple of MPs who stated after the first reading they switched from wanting to pass the bill to wanting to reject.
If you live in the U.S, something similar that realistically could happen might be a bill is being debated that greatly benefits veterans. One of the tactics used to convince legislatures that are on the fence on the bill could be to have all the people that want to pass the bill sing the national anthem at the end of debate before moving to voting.
I don't think many people would be pissed at such a tactic being used. Maybe it's weird but I think the universal agreement would be "yeah that'd probably have an impact on some of the legislatures".
It is cringe regardless of if it works. And actually, the fact that some morons are so easily swayed that the stupid dance makes them change their vote makes it even more cringe.
That's... That's every song and every dance... Literally every piece of culture and art can be called that or "just a silly drawing" or "just a pile of clay"...
I just made a comment comparing the two but regarding the hypothetical of a pontic Greek minister started to dance pyrrichios in the middle of the Greek parliament being laughed.
As a kiwi it has always felt powerful and emotional to me. I suppose that’s the culture divide. Each to their own, just try respect other people’s cultures yeah?
I hate the maori because they were extremely brutal too, look up "Moriori Genocide" they literally arrived and started massacring people, after that they have no pity of mine and proved my point that "If native-americans had the same resources as Europeans they would have done the same or worse"
I don't have to look it up, I believe you. Same shit in the US. Sure, the WHITE MAN fucked with them a ton, but they also massacred the shit out of each all the time and we're absolutely brutal. Bone Tomahawk wasn't an exaggeration.
The haka is so funny to me. "Look at our ferocious tribal dance our native warriors did to intimidate their opponents until we were viciously wiped away by a modern culture who figured out how to sail boats while we were too busy dancing around with our tongues out making silly noises."
Fuck natives and their loser mentalities. Tear down every reservation and throw up a fucking Arby's on their sacred burial grounds because that's what winners do.
Maori weren't wiped and were recruited to enslave other native populations because the British had so much trouble fighting them.
They also knew how to sail. Unless they developed the ability to walk on water or fly, getting from Hawaii to Fiji to New Zealand is pretty difficult without knowing how to use a boat.
The American mind is so clogged with Arby's cholesterol it forgets that the Pacific is mostly water.
They were also only in New Zealand for like 300 years before the British showed up, which usually isn't enough to be considered indigenous by the left but they get a pass because they're brown
Right, so you don't know New Zealand history. It was 900 years, but the length of time is irrelevant. The New Zealand government signed a contract with the tribes.
The New Zealand government signed a contract. You either believe in contract law or you don't, but written contracts are a cornerstone of Western Civilization. You can't get out of them because it's inconvenient, or doesn't work for you anymore.
Source? Everything I've read says they first arrived in the mid-1300s and the first European explorer arrived in 1642.
And yeah I know there are treaties, I'm just calling out the hypocrisy of claiming that the e.g. Boers are not indigenous to South Africa but accepting Maori as indigenous.
Between 1250-1300 so 750 years ago give or take. Not 300.
The indigenous peoples thing is a red herring to the protest in parliament.
But if you want to really engage I don't think being indigenous should give you special rights and defining who is indigenous is kind of silly - people come and go from land constantly (Boers are a good example).
At the same time the majority of people who say 'indigenous rights = woke nonsense", are typically of the opinion that immigration is a bad thing and refugees are scum. They aren't opposed to protecting their own culture, but hate it when others attempt to the same thing i.e. they are full of shit.
So what year did James Cook find New Zealand? 1769. Between 1250 and 1769 how many years passed? About 500. So 300 is a massive understatement in both cases.
Either way, claiming indigenousness is arbitrary anyway and a red herring/completely irrelevant to a signed contract.
So true. Same reason you shouldn’t be able to vote until you have had sex. People who are too worthless to even be chosen to procreate should not have any say in the future.
Sex is your idea of worth? You’re telling me the street whore should have more of a say than the virgin doctor? Sex is primarily a tool for pleasure in the west, not procreation
Could literally say the exact same thing about the remnants of the Confederacy. Sherman was right, they should’ve razed them even harder, fucking pussies
The fact that this war was referred to as a war of brothers because families would have members fighting on both sides makes your comment seem fucking stupid.
Till you realise that they put up a better fight than the majority of the world which is the only reason their native people didn't get completely shafted in the treaty(only slightly). Sure probably the main reason was because geographically it wasn't worth it at the time to put more resources into it but nevertheless they overcame what British troops were there to the point that they had to make peace.
It's not very well known but the Maori literally invented modern trench warfare. After the war was all said and done the British studied their trench system and implemented it soon after in WW1.
On the subject of indigenous, elected members of parliament effectively rejecting the changing of the founding document of New Zealand, while doing their silly ferocious tribal dance.
Generally the people writing these things have keyboards with faded awsd keys covered in saliva remnants and cheeto dust.
When they're called out they tell you they are a powerful (insert 8 year higher education field) who makes a million dollars a year and has a trophy wife, then they delete their account.
15 year club and >100,000 karma account using Cheeto dust as an insult in the year of our lord 2024 who then proceeds to le ebinally eviscerate the evil strawman he just created
Oh no, should I keep making random accounts to hide my account age so I can get respect from the users of the 4chan subreddit??? It's really important I'm perceived as much as a misanthrope as they are, so I can gain their acceptance.
Your general point is correct, but you picked probably the worst technology to demonstrate it. If there's one thing the Polynesians knew how to do well, it was sail. They developed fore and aft rigging long before anyone else, which is what enabled them to end up on so many remote islands in the Pacific.
Devil's Advocate but the Pacific Islanders were known for their expertise in sailing and navigation. Eventually the larger Western battleships showed up to wreck house but they had more resources and wood for bigger ships and guns
I always wonder why they let New Zealand do this cringefest at major sports events. Why do they get to do the haka tuah and force their opponents to watch them, and Greeks aren't allowed to do a zeibekiko, Austrians their waltz and Russians their buza?
I think I technically learned the words at some point in grade school but I don’t really remember ever standing up and saying it as a class or anything.
I went to a lot of different schools in NZ (i moved a lot because of my parents work) and whilst it is taught, it isn't really that huge of a thing and is prioritised on a school to school basis. Several primary schools i was in would have maybe a term at most of giving it of any kind of importance (ie we would be pulled out of class to spend a few hours on it, but they did this with multiple subjects/performances) in highschool, we had maybe half of term in P.E learning my schools haka, but again there was no demanding priority for students to learn it completely or fluently, as it wasn't really graded, especially as you went into higher years.
However, almost every school i went to had a haka club, set up as an after school club similar to sports and arts (largely attended by those with ties to maori culture and ancestry) Any significant event usually involved the haka, but also other ceremonial acts unique to maori culture, usually performed by these kids who were closer to maori culture. The language was taught in younger years, as well as an elective language you could learn and be graded on in highschool. Along with all this, Maori history and culture was taught fairly consistently at all levels, as a part of wider New zealand history and culture. So it is there, but more as a way to preserve and educate about maori culture. Not necessarily forcing anyone to participate in it, but to respect it as an aspect of NZ's multicultural society.
This is however, from my subjective experience, and could have changed since i was last there ten years ago. But what I've explained is largely what i grew up with.
I mean at 7 years old, you don't really care either way. I moved to the country when i was 6, so I wasn't even native and had no true cultural ties, but even then, a lot of kids, particularly white, but also a lot of maori and other pacific island kids, didn't really care, no one kicked up a fuss as it was more of a time to goof around then anything. We kinda all half assed it because again, it was more so the school could say the encouraged maori culture, as was common place. Honestly it wasn't so serious, obviously if you flat out refused, then you would be treated the same way as if you refused to participate in any lesson or event, Maori or not, the exact same way any other school around the world would. Also it wasn't like it was a frequent thing, it would be for like an hour or so on a thursday afternoon for like 6 consecutive weeks, then the rest of the year we did other weird shit and honestly, it was something different to do than normal primary school shit like being read to by a teacher while you sit around or learn about dinosaurs. I mean that same school also had the entire student body learn the recorder and do a big performance for an end of term assembly, so there was all sorts of wacky dumb shit that had no real impact on education and was very clearly nothing to do with Maori culture, To compare it to the UK its no different then having to sing christian hymns during assemblies, even if you weren't religious, in fact i had more teachers who told me off for not singing about jesus despite not being christian then i did teachers telling me off for not doing the haka despite not being Maori, its just a different culture that does different things.
Id then move to a different school and it would only be done by kids who gave a damn about the heritage by joining the haka club and the rest of us would go to a sports club or motor cross or something else. As i said, it's on a school by school basis. Once you hit highschool, its entirely elective, we did it 1 year in PE for a few weeks in between doing basketball and learning about drugs and alcohol (which PE itself became an elective class after the first 2 years of the 5 years of highschool, as the school recognised that a 15 year old may not wanna spend time running track or playing tennis, and instead wants to spend that time fixing cars or learning business and economics or psychology etc. in that time) but during that time, you would just have fun with it, it wasn't taken too seriously and was just a way to participate in the culture, we would all have a laugh with it, even the teacher.
Also, not gonna lie, it was kinda fun. As a kid you get told You'd get to make as much noise as you want and pull silly faces rather than be sat behind a desk and all you had to do was copy the dude in front and say words you don't understand. I know that doesn't sound important but at 7 years old nothing you are doing is massively important besides learning how to read and learning how to count. Obviously if you don't grow up with it, it might seem weird or something you shouldn't participate in, but you could say that about a large amount of school.
I'm also reasonably sure that the haka as is performed before sports games (usually rugby) is only really supposed to be performed by men. There's other more dance-y things that the women perform. If I'm right, feels like the woman who started it off is appropriating culture.
It's not just the sports events. It's whenever there is a diplomat visiting. So hilarious to see some foreign diplomat, or Prince William walking into a meeting with professionalism and dignity and then all these people dancing around, shouting, waving their arms and sticking their tongues out. It's funny as fuck.
For their culture, that’s a sign of respect. Their culture was brutally taken over by colonizers. How is it so hard to understand that part of the government’s apology is allowing the indigenous people to practice their culture? Seriously, you would be FUMING if someone came to your home country, took over, and didn’t allow you to openly practice your culture. The complete lack of empathy in this comment section is appalling.
It’s bullshit that you’re not allowed to respond to the haka or you get fined for cultural insensitivity. Like fine, do your stupid little war dance, but the other team shouldn’t have to just take it.
...wtf are you talking about? Other countries are allowed to do their own challenge...Fiji,tonga,Samoa,etc. don't blame others for not having a war dance of your own
If they were interested and had their own war dance, they could do it back. Nothing's stopping them from making one of their own except for them...but it's not part of their identity
Idk after they did it to USA basketball then got dog walked it made the dance lose any sort of intimidation effect or whatever. I think everyone outside of NZ acknowledges it’s cringe but it’s not offensive enough (or prominent enough) for anyone to care about.
Honestly as a New Zealander I'd agree. Any Haka done at an international sporting event outside of Rugby(especially outside of full contact sports) is just not in line with tradition imo.
Are other nations not allowed to for other sports? In rugby both teams are allowed to do a challenge but it's generally only the pacific nations that do one. Sometimes you'll get northern hemisphere teams just get up in their face while the haka is taking place which is pretty cool to see but the organization tends to fine the team which is lame
English men don't have the constitution for rugby, I can tell you without bothering to look it up that all their national team's stars are Irish or Scots.
Because rugby is traditionally the game of the gentry. The poor working class were the ones that got the chants going as the sport was always a working class game.
The fine is a literal slap on the wrist. We're talking at most $200 per player that the team pays for. It confuses me to no end that teams don't just cop the fine to make it more interesting.
It's literally because of World Rugby regulations, NZ Rugby and various arbitrary Maori welcome the idea of responding to/meeting the challenge. That's the whole point.
Yeah I know that. But the consequences of breaking that rule is so light that I don't get why teams just forget about it. I mean technically under the rules they can be sin binned or removed from the game or even forfeit the team for doing it but I can't see any well respected ref doing that. Would be the #1 way to torpedo your career.
Ah I see, you're right. Perhaps it's some aspect of virtue signalling/team management explicitly telling them they can't; though it would be fucking sick if there was some response each time.
I'm guessing maybe because ABs' were probably the first to have some kind of tradition like the Haka pre-game it's seen as more sacred thus the restrictions (though now we have more Island nations or even the Australian Aboriginal teams doing their equivalent).
Put it this way, the only reason we sing national anthems at international sporting events is because of the Haka. That was some Welsh guys response to it back in the late 1800s. The reason for those rules has been stated as being because "it allows photographers to take pics of the haka" literally no one but the photographers and world rugby want that.
The only strict rule for cultural challenges are that teams can not cross their own 10m line. This is so that they don't stand in front of the camera people filming it.
Doing a battle cry also means they view the general New Zealandish (?) population as enemies. Maybe the general population should finally understand this and... respond to their declaration of war.
I'm guessing you don't know NZ history very well ; fighting the Maori would be a bloodbath, NZ is basically Afghanistan in terms of terrain ; even in the age of gunpowder they managed to slaughter and consume entire towns of settlers.
Why do they get to do the haka tuah and force their opponents to watch them, and Greeks aren't allowed to do a zeibekiko, Austrians their waltz and Russians their buza?
They are anglos, that's literally it. No more explanation needed
I was thinking the same analogy but actually in parliament. Like even pontic Greeks have war dances, but if a pontic Greek minister was to dance it in parliament because he doesn't like a bill he would be seen as ridiculous.
People will try to claim that it's somehow racist to not allow them to do that and that it's their culture, but actually forget that many different people have similar war dances, including mine, being pontic Greek, I can't imagine a minister who is pontic Greek starting to dance pyrichios in the middle of the Greek parliament just because he doesn't like a bill and expecting to be taken seriously, and frankly I don't take this seriously either.
I don’t think anyone’s restricting the Greeks, Austrians, or Russians their right to do cultural dances at sporting events. It’s not like there’s some authority figure that’s picking and choosing who can dance and who can’t. I still find this shit absurdly cringe though, even as a Kiwi. I could care less if we do it at sporting events, but doing it parliament is just retarded.
While the haka has a wide range of purposes, traditionally being used as a welcome or as a battle cry, in this case the MP is using it to signal her confidence in the fact that as a representative of the Maori people, she is taking a firm and established opposition stance towards the proposed changes to law that would drastically limit Maori as those affected by it (who represent 20% of the population) see the legislation as undermining their long established rights as a cultural populace.
Imagine if Trump suddenly announced that, in conjunction with the rest of his pundits, they are pushing forward a bill that restricts sale and consumption of tea leaves in the US because it was historically associated with a protested trade with the UK when there was contention about the US's right to self-govern. Not only would this severely negatively impact a huge portion of the population based on ridiculous, extremist ideology.
The push for this change in legislation is similar in that Maori have been discriminated heavily against in legislation over a long time and this proposed change basically is suggesting repealing a significant amount of progress towards reducing this discrimination.
NZ were doing the Haka at sporting events before everyone was even doing the national anthem. The Welsh Rugby team started the trend of singing the national anthem as a direct response to the All Blacks Haka.
The end game or so to speak for New Zealand would be a brutal civil war when self preservation finally kicks in for the descendants of the colonists and they understand that no amount of parliamentary representation would be enough to satisfy the indigenous population. This is why they weren't able to keep India or South Africa for long. India was much better because they knew when to get the fuck out of there before getting slaughtered by rogue marauders veiling themselves under the guise of independence revolutionaries.
On the other hand the United States won't face this issue with their indigenous peoples because they spent most of the 1800s hunting down said groups for sport and banded together with collaborating tribes who accurately predicted that they'd need to side with the federal government just to survive the genocidal anger of US and Mexican soldiers.
It's always funny to me when maoris cry colonialism and oppression. Not even 100 years before the english came to NZ they genocided and enslaved a tribe of pacifists minding their own business. Bully got a situation reversal and doesn't like it. 100% deserved. Savages need to be put in their place.
The genocide of the Moriori happened after European arrival and colonisation of NZ. They hijacked a European vessel and weapons to be able to get there and do it.
And yet, Europeans and Americans flagellate themselves over such behaviour while minorities are praised because "it's their culture". Shouldn't all be beholden to the same standards? Now when everyone sits at the same table?
"It's in their culture" is trash reasoning, stemming from a perceived inferiority that they can't do better. "We're the enlightened ones, we know better and we should act better. They're savages, they don't know any better, let them continue to be savage" is the trash implication they refuse to acknowledge.
Would a viking larper espousing his savage cultural views in the norwegian parliament in opposition to a bill, be given the same admiration as this lady?
People still praise the French national anthem even though it's a savage song all about slitting throats and spilling blood. Cultural meaning changes over time.
The moriori were genocided by two small tribes of the era, saying that the whole Maori people are savages because 1% of the population did something fucked up is like eating a bad apple and coming to the conclusion that all apples are bad.
Also the British crown was aware of what they were doing but they didn't stop it when they could've, sure it doesn't excuse the genocide but like wtf ?
In that same thread: ”reminder these savages are literally pure evil. im from a polynesian island so I know their culture. to give you a summary, they revere an ancient evil witch-queen who got revenge against her king-husband by poking their childs skull with a bone needle until it died. she is REVERED and CELEBRATED as a folk hero amongst these literal subhumans. its the same with all these ‘poor natives’ that got treated so badly by white men. native americans were subhuman savages who would flay, eat and rape their victims, if they didnt roast off each of their limbs with a slow fire first. alaskan natives were basically brown vikings and constantly raided each others coastlines and sacrificed captives and slaves to their gods. but of all the crybaby natives, I really cannot stand maori. pretending to be big tough rapist warriors one day and crying about the time white men killed 20 of them like 300 years ago the next”
So, they killed 300 of a population of like 500, enslaved and raped the rest, but there were survivors, so it's not a genocide and implying it is is racist.
Got it.
So guess the germans didn't genocide the Jews, the Jews aren't genociding the Palestinians, and the Armenians didn't genocide the Christians. Because there were survivors! And claiming it's a genocide is racist!
Thank goodness a qualified progressive expert has explained this concept to us simple and inherently racist westerners, and they're not just a bunch of cherry picking goalpost moving hypocrites.
Maori aren't even native to NZ to begin with. They are Polynesians who found NZ before the Europeans did and wiped out native bird species and destroyed the forests. It's not about whoever got there first, it's about who is stronger.
Your timeline is a bit off. The Maori attacked and genocided the Moriori in 1835.
For some reason many people wrongly think that the Moriori were a people who were in NZ before the Maori arrived who they killed when they arrived. Actually they were far away on another tiny island and had been isolated there for many centuries.
Did I say any of that? All I said is they genocided and enslaved a pacifist tribe for no reason other than savagery. And they went out of their way to do it.
It was definitely a brutal and shameful attack. I just noticed you said it was before the British arrived when it was actually after. The Maoris had no idea the Morioris even existed until after the British found them.
There was one rugby match here in Ireland where they tried doing the haka but it was completely drowned out by Irish fans singing 'The fields of Athenry'. The haka is cringe
That's the good shit done, frankly. The haka exists as a challenge, so seeing others just standing there waiting it out is something wrong. Your team at that one World Cup match putting your arms around each others' shoulders and doing your dance forward was fucking great.
No, highly conservative patriarchal tribesmen larping as leftists again. If you don’t give them special racial political preferences in perpetuity, it’s literally genocide
What? It's literally a contract between governing groups (specific maori tribes and the British government in this case) and that is like the basis of a rules based society...
And now it’s being invoked to elevate one group of citizens within a single modern state over others, solely on the basis of race. Whatever purpose it once served, its purpose within New Zealand has become invidious racial discrimination.
Basis of association with the signatory groups... Race has nothing to do with it... Like do you think your grandpa's home deed shouldn't be honored either?
The signatory groups are all dead and their descendants are all New Zealanders. There is no Maori nation to deal with as a treaty partner. Race and ancestry have quite literally everything to go with it.
Ok so is your grandpa does his deed and will not matter?
No maori nation
You... You don't know what the treaty in question was about do you? That's specifically what this is about...
Race and ancestry
Race isn't a, like, real thing; inheritance is. You can orient inheritance in a variety of ways; passing down assets and binding agreements is extremely normal. A person inheriting a company also inherits it's debts and such, for instance. At least until we overthrow capitalism but somehow I don't think that's what you're getting at.
Fucking this. People misunderstand the situation all the time. Tribal ultra-conservative factions abuse the leftist cretinism all the time to enforce priviliges for themselves.
They are literally on a tribal mindset where they abuse the system to benefit themselves and nobody else. Same thing with any other low-civilization culture, be it aboriginal like in this case or immigrants like the Muslims in the EU. They just want privileges at the cost of everyone else. Who knows if they actually feel "hurt" and, to be honest, normal people wouldn't care becouse it's retarded to care about such nonsense.
Do not be fooled. They wish to destroy every other culture on the globe. They want to take away all their core values to replace them with progressive ones. They'll encourage them to keep their funny costumes however for the sake of diversity. But it'll be an empty shell of the culture it once represented.
You're an idiot who's drinking the Neo-nazi Kool-aid. Both sides of at least the American political system just want to keep funneling the majority of the resources towards the rich people who paid for their election. The whole culture war thing is just a distraction so we don't blame the people hoarding all the resources as the real problem. But keep getting mad at someone wearing a pride shirt, and call them part of a totalitarian agenda when it's your dumbass projecting your own totalitarian vision onto them.
That was a huge contributing factor - I don't remember what year that was but shit was definitely trending that way already. There's a difference between donning and afro avatar and making swastikas in habbo hotel for the lulz and genuinely espousing that shit. I mean it says fiction and falsehood right there at the top.
It went from edgelords dipping their toes in some casual racism/anti-semitism to actual Nazis and those of us that though they were kidding and those of us that were kidding but they thought we were serious and now I have no idea what goes on in /b/. I pop in occasionally and it’s so… strange to me to see people actually being… like woke. It’s like a full circle, are they arguing in good faith or are they larping as something they think is offensive?
The Left supports multiculturalism and diversity. Yet they will retract their offerings of love and peace if another culture practices what they find abhorent. Which is perfectly reasonable, but it doesn't really square with this respect for different pov.
So the multiculturalism seems superficial. It will accept difference but only in things that isn't important enough to be offensive. Which means they don't allow the meaningful aspects of other cultures either.
If you think that's fair because those values are the best in the world and everyone would be better living according to them, then that's colonialism. Whatever your opinion on colonialism, it just seems like the Left is threading on very shaky grounds.
This is dressed up as critical thought when it’s more a “hmm you claim to accept all but why don’t you accept people who want you dead? Intriguing isn’t it” chronically online type beat.
Well, so far in New Zealand, the Maoris, not all of them.but the extremist think they are superior race over everyone else here. Here in New Zealand, it is very multi culture.
You got your nz Europeans been here since the 1880s.
You have your Chinese,Koreans, japanese,Indians, South Africans, etc. So apparently, they are better than us.🙄
Even though the missionaries help the Maori's to get their language written down back in 1840's.
The whole thing is you aren't allowed to ENFORCE YOUR CULTURE ON OTHERS. You are totally ok making a culture that others appreciate and want to be a part of. I think your issue is that conservatives haven't been very good at that once they lose the enforcement mechanism.
It will accept difference but only in things that isn't important enough to be offensive.
It sounds like your argument against multiculturalism is that it can't be multiculturalism if it adopts the things it finds worthwhile, but disregards things it doesn't? By your definition, multiculturalism would only be worth it if it accepted cannibalism and men raping their wives.
The haka in parliament is cringe as fuck, but so is your logic.
You also seem to be under the impression that colonialism and multiculturalism are inherently opposed? I guess you must have missed all of human history.
Being a professional victim and moron is cringey when these NZ politicians do it, and it's cringey when you do it, too.
Multiculturalism? That's your best argument? Right now when leftists en-masse are protesting it? Each time I see rightists argue, I once again realize they rarely understand reality
noun: colonialism
the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.
that's colonialism. Maybe learn what words actually mean before pretending to be an authority on the subject. Humor me.
I mean I feel like everyone is like this when it comes to other cultures, but those you're calling out just claim not to be. But claiming the left is being colonial is a biiiiig stretch. Absurd, really, considering we have a party that actively wants to bring Freedom^tm by force.
All good if it puts a lid on the perpetual flow of money the our society of individuals are forced to pay to iwi in our rates, taxes, and utility levies.
The left pays people not to work. (inb4 that's not real left / communism, that's not the good one either, that's not well implemented, that's not left, that's ........; inb4 in my NEET utopia people just want to work because all is well and rainbows; inb4 capitalism is eebil which it is but turns out when you let them choose, people always prefer these countries so it turns out they arserape you less; inb4 you don't prefer it, etc. I know the mantra)
if you disagree with this lie or correct me using any amount of evidence, it’s a fallacy.
I can give you actual examples of a successful leftist revolution that don’t fit any of the talking points you mentioned. There are substantive critiques and arguments against things like the Soviet Union, China etc which I vehemently oppose because they produce the same fundamental political divide as any other capitalist system does. Honestly though maybe I’m wasting my time trying to be honest in a 4chan subreddit lol
That’s extremely specific when tribes had many different ways of living and different means/needs of expressing wealth. Such a wealth that typically was only what you could carry.
Most of NZ is Maori land, the treaty gives them rights to their land, the new conservative government wants to take away those rights so they can sell the resources under those lands (and sea beds) to the Chinese.
That's literally it, They want to start fracking asap. The last time this government was in charge they sold all our hydroelectric dams to the Chinese.
It's really not that hard to believe people want to frack at the land at people cost, even Ru Paul does it and I'm sure he's not what most people think of as the fracking archetype. It's really not a "liberal cucks" vs "conservatives tards" thing because literally both sides frack and profit immensely.
Writer Zero HP Lovecraft has an excellent essay on what he calls the "queer monomyth," a storytelling template in which the protagonist of the story is a misfit in some way and the main obstacle between them and their dreams is the inability of their friends/family/society to accept their oddity. In these stories (Captain Marvel, if you need an example), the only flaw the protagonist has is an inability to believe in themselves and recognize their own excellence. These stories have exponentially multiplied recently.
The children who grew up on these stories were never challenged by them to recognize their own flaws, work on them, and become better people. Instead, they remain in an eternal state of adolescence. Now these dorks are entering the workforce and the government. And what do these immature and emotionally stunted people do when they don't get what they want? They throw a literal tantrum.
Never understood why some little dance made by a group if cannibal losers who got destroyed by malnourished sailors is seen as this great warrior thing. Win a war or something first at least.
“This is weird and cringe unlike us Americans who have completely normal politics where presidential candidates debate about golf and can barely string a sentence together”
Eh. I learned it in college. It's pretty fun to be honest, kind of a confidence boost in the moment too cause you're just being overly intense on purpose.
I'm sorry your opinion is invalid. 4channers who have never been outside a basement, played a sport or been to new Zealand have a more valid opinion than you.
I mean it's a bit more than just screaming. There are specific words and movements you use in tangent to the words and facial expressions you need to make. We had a group of like 40 guys doing it, it was a pretty good time and got to share in a friend's culture we would otherwise not have ever been exposed to.
Same dude made spam mushibi out of our kitchen as a fundraiser for his club on campus, god damn is that shit good.
She's in a suit. Her kids certainly go to a private school in polos and khakis. She eats fast food and rides in a car. She owns a smartphone. She's not some Indian living in the jungle worshipping island gods. How embarrassing is this?
Honestly one of the goofiest things I've ever seen. Idk how anyone takes this seriously. Literally wearing the clothes and speaking the language of their conquerors but still doing this performance and getting a bunch of the crackers in the crowd to do it with you.
… in a debate regarding a treaty wherein Maori are given all rights and protections as subjects as well as their chiefdoms.
Are you that dumb or is it just bad faith?
I’ll wander over to my local Chinese and use chopsticks. Holy shit! I’m Chinese now why don’t I just accept it? I go to pay the bill. Wow! Arabic numerals! Fuck me, it’s the arabs who are my lords and masters. Don’t worry next I’ll go to India- they speak English and even play cricket. Holy shit they’re not owned by England!
Oh wait it’s a Commonwealth. It’s a member of the Commonwealth now. That just means.. gasp that New Zealand functions almost entirely autonomously and can rescind membership at any time. Fucking hell! The most brutal conquerors of all can be signed away with a note and a kthxbai.
So I’m really desperately curious. Are you that dumb or is this bad faith?
In 1890 or so, a treaty was signed between the English and the local maori called the treaty of waitangi. Both translations of it said different things though, like the maori version of the text never said they would cede sovereignty to the crown.
Obviously this is a problem and in the 70s a law was passed saying that rather than follow the text of the treaty they would follow the principle or spirit of it out of good faith, but did not specify was those principles were. Over the last 50 years, various judges have made calls about what those principles actually are, and theyve each been treated as they should be since.
The currently elected government is trying to fast track the rest of the treaty by defining those principles in one fell swoop, what they've defined is very detrimental to the maori population so people are angry.
David Lange wouldn't put the Treaty into law because he recognized there was no agreed meaning, and without clear meanings you cannot have law for everyone. Of course Geoffrey Palmer just put it in anyway, just because...
There was only one clause of the three that has a discrepancy, essentially the translator mistranslated the word "Sovereignty" to something that is closer to "stewardship". If I remember correctly, Maori didn't have a direct translation of Sovereignty, so he cobbled together an approximation.
Maori activists try to leverage this discrepancy to force through all sorts of bullshit laws and special treatment, the latter being in direct contravention of the third clause of the treaty.
From what I could find the relationship between the NZ government and the native tribal population has been governed by a treaty made between the natives and the British Empire in the 1840s where the natives keep certain rights and territories in exchange for British rule over NZ.
The amount of rights and representation of natives has ebbed and flowed since then and has expanded since the 70s thanks to favorable court rulings. But the bill would let the legislature take control over how the treaty is governed, rather than the courts, and would expand the special rights and privileges given to the natives to all NZ citizens, native or not. I’m not 100% sure on that but that’s what I gathered from the news. The fact that there are very few specifics about the bill in the press give me the impression that a lot is being unreported and they’re spinning a narrative as usual.
The bill is dead in the water, the other two parties in government will vote against it in the 2nd reading, PM thinks it's a laughing stock, it only made it to first reading because that was a condition of ACT party being in coalition government. In summary, the problem here is that you are a FOol who knows "Jack Shit" about what you are looking at
Think New Zealand affirmative action. Maoris don't want to lose their mandated percentage of hires even if they aren't more qualified for the job. (They hate equality)
Yes, NZ has policies to ensure job security for the Maori people. The people who pay the price for this kind of interventionism are citizens and the business owners who are there actually trying to get something done.
"hawk tuah" not sure what this zoomer slang means but after some googling it seems she was spitting on the ground and having sex in front of these people.
Most inbred groups of people are Ashkenazi Jews, Samaritans, Druze, isolated tribes in Borneo/Malaysia/ Papua New Guinea/Australia/the Amazon, so they’re probably up there
Some of them have a little more fun, like screaming war chants or punching each other. We really need to do better here in the US. Make those elderlies really fight for their paychecks.
ITT there is a first hand account of an Anon depicting these maoris for what they are:
”reminder these savages are literally pure evil. im from a polynesian island so I know their culture. to give you a summary, they revere an ancient evil witch-queen who got revenge against her king-husband by poking their childs skull with a bone needle until it died. she is REVERED and CELEBRATED as a folk hero amongst these literal subhumans. its the same with all these ‘poor natives’ that got treated so badly by white men. native americans were subhuman savages who would flay, eat and rape their victims, if they didnt roast off each of their limbs with a slow fire first. alaskan natives were basically brown vikings and constantly raided each others coastlines and sacrificed captives and slaves to their gods. but of all the crybaby natives, I really cannot stand maori. pretending to be big tough rapist warriors one day and crying about the time white men killed 20 of them like 300 years ago the next”
When a politician begins shouting in the legislature its a form of protest and reflects their culture, but when I start screaming in a McDonalds I'm "Having a mental breakdown" and "Need to put down the gun" and "Am a disturbing example of the effects of fentanyl."
She looks pretty hot in the first picture. Don’t know what any of this is about so I have to assume she’s summoning by boner with an ancient scroll. (It’s working.)
They are scared this bill makes too much sense. This is literally all they can do as they incapable with arguing with David Seymour’s logic. Literally they resort to this shit for that reason.
You people still feed into this foolishness of right and left, believing that either side serves anyone but Satan. You will fight one another forever, an unknowing participant in the division being manufactured by the powers that be. The lord Jesus Christ will return and he will judge you, me, and everyone. Your eyes will open to the truth
Recognising and treating the haka as anything other than embarrassing and pathetic is well overdue.
Everytime it’s at a sporting event or ceremony, there’s still the expectation that people are meant to treat it with something like reverence and awe like it’s still the 1990s, but most people are just waiting for it to end .
Isn't the actual historical tribal aspect of the Haka is when the tribes would square up and it pretty much meant 'if we win were gonna eat ya and violate your corpse'?
Weren’t the natives bloodthirsty violent cannibals before the British made them chill out? I think them being gay and cringe may be a lot easier to deal with.
TheShivMaster@reddit
The haka is so overdone. It’s fascinating watching what should normally be a neat and unique cultural expression slowly go through devaluation from overuse. New Zealand started doing it at rugby games and have been trying to fit it into everything else they possibly can since.
oo3c_cc@reddit
It's very forced. I think NZ is trying to have its own "thing" internationally. I mean, if it wasn't for the Haka what would they even have? The only other thing I remember about NZ is that there was a crazy mosque shooting there a few years back
Memeions@reddit
Unironically the most culturally important thing related to NZ is the lord of the rings movie trilogy.
drtitus@reddit
Probably :(

As a New Zealander I can say this: as a nation we are extremely anxious about being taken seriously and are extremely keen to be well liked. These two impulses can run into conflict with each other, but can be seen in the haka: it's a war dance & therefore serious, but also unique to the Maori culture (if you forget about all the other Pasifika cultures)
LTTostada@reddit
I associate the haka more with that fucking awful Fast and Furious movie with the Rock and Jason Statham.

Dont get the “le left bad” mind virus.
drtitus@reddit
Oh thanks bro, coming out representing NZ as "fresh-anus". You do us proud.
clippervictor@reddit
And let me guess: they obviously don’t reach the minimum number of votes to get an MP seat in the parliament but because of le representation of minorities they get to have one and not only make demands but also ridicule themselves with their stupid regional dances
fresh-anus@reddit

Also worth mentioning that the suggested law under consideration won't be passed and sent to the Governor-General for ascent. "Cry-bully" really does some up the modern left.
Shpshggr@reddit
You could just have looked this up yourself but I guess the insidious lense of intersectionality is a bit easier right?
drtitus@reddit
She is literally protesting the treaty principles bill. While you raise valid concerns, these are not what is being discussed here. Maori have representation in Parliament, so they can contribute democratically to discussion around these issues - and no one [with any say at least] is proposing that this ceases.
None of those things you mention are in the Treaty of Waitangi. It is the Treaty and its interpretation that is what this bill is about. Valid points for a different discussion, but on this matter, they are irrelevant.
TrajanParthicus@reddit
People shouldn't be allowed to have a smoke if they want!!! Everyone needs to do exactly what I want at all times. The coercive power of the state should be used to enforce specific behaviours at all times!! But ONLY when they're behaviours I oppose, in all other circumstances, it should be "my body, my choice!"
This heckin' study by Professor Crimeapologistberg shows that 3 strikes laws don't work! Putting recidivist criminals in prison where they can't commit crimes doesn't actually stop them committing crimes!!
And let me guess, it has achieved literally no improvement in outcomes despite vast amounts of money pumped in?

brus_wein@reddit
It doesn't do nothing if you follow it up with actual violence, since it's supposedly to be a war dance. Not so silly if you associate it with being brutally killed. Of course, that kind of thing doesn't really happen anymore.
mrstorydude@reddit
If it's "just funny walking and loud shouting" then do it yourself?????
It's a fucking dance with cultural significance and one of the few things that remain of the native culture right now, unless your goal is the total eradication of the native peoples of NZ (which if it is, come on man there's gotta be more entertaining groups of people to eradicate the culture of. Who the fuck gives a shit about NZ natives?) it should still be kept.
VarroaStyle@reddit
Eating people was also part of their culture, why dont we let them go back to that too?
mrstorydude@reddit
"was" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there homie.
This isn't "go back" this is "keep". That's a huge difference.
They do not want to "go back" to their original culture, they want to "keep" what little is left so they at least have a semblance of their original identity. It's already well known that attempts to make people "go back" to their original culture backfire heavily, especially if a dominant culture has existed for a very long time (see: Liberia).
VarroaStyle@reddit
First they want to keep, then they want to "restore"some old traditions, then they ciment those old traditions, then comes the "we have always been like this why are you trying to oppress our culture", then they start the cycle again, spreading around. Which is funny, because they wont doubt to destroy your culture and burn it to ashes at any chance.
You still dont get how this kind of people work their way around, dont you?
mrstorydude@reddit
"First they want to keep"
Nah it's not "first", just "want to keep".

It's not even about the dance per se, if some guy did a folkdance in my goverment then I know I'd be realy upset with that.
kirenian@reddit
Oh but fillibuster green eggs and ham bs from lardo cruz is fine. At least this is a pretty cool dance my guy.
xxxvalenxxx@reddit
Almost as dumb as saying a prayer and the pledge of allegiance.
HorseNuts9000@reddit
Nope, significantly more dumb. And they don't say the pledge of allegiance, or prayers for that matter, during US government proceedings.
v64@reddit
what, the house and senate literally start every day with a prayer https://chaplain.house.gov/archive/index.html
RawketPropelled37@reddit
Except they actually do those things
And the prayer/pledge is loud stomping around screaming
mrstorydude@reddit
HorseNuts9000@reddit
It is cringe regardless of if it works. And actually, the fact that some morons are so easily swayed that the stupid dance makes them change their vote makes it even more cringe.

snrup1@reddit

GeologistEven6190@reddit
Maori weren't wiped and were recruited to enslave other native populations because the British had so much trouble fighting them.
They also knew how to sail. Unless they developed the ability to walk on water or fly, getting from Hawaii to Fiji to New Zealand is pretty difficult without knowing how to use a boat.
The American mind is so clogged with Arby's cholesterol it forgets that the Pacific is mostly water.
mischling2543@reddit
They were also only in New Zealand for like 300 years before the British showed up, which usually isn't enough to be considered indigenous by the left but they get a pass because they're brown
GeologistEven6190@reddit
Right, so you don't know New Zealand history. It was 900 years, but the length of time is irrelevant. The New Zealand government signed a contract with the tribes.
The New Zealand government signed a contract. You either believe in contract law or you don't, but written contracts are a cornerstone of Western Civilization. You can't get out of them because it's inconvenient, or doesn't work for you anymore.
mischling2543@reddit
Source? Everything I've read says they first arrived in the mid-1300s and the first European explorer arrived in 1642.
And yeah I know there are treaties, I'm just calling out the hypocrisy of claiming that the e.g. Boers are not indigenous to South Africa but accepting Maori as indigenous.
GeologistEven6190@reddit
https://teara.govt.nz/en/history/page-1
Between 1250-1300 so 750 years ago give or take. Not 300.
The indigenous peoples thing is a red herring to the protest in parliament.
But if you want to really engage I don't think being indigenous should give you special rights and defining who is indigenous is kind of silly - people come and go from land constantly (Boers are a good example).
At the same time the majority of people who say 'indigenous rights = woke nonsense", are typically of the opinion that immigration is a bad thing and refugees are scum. They aren't opposed to protecting their own culture, but hate it when others attempt to the same thing i.e. they are full of shit.
mischling2543@reddit
Read more carefully next time bruh
GeologistEven6190@reddit
So what year did James Cook find New Zealand? 1769. Between 1250 and 1769 how many years passed? About 500. So 300 is a massive understatement in both cases.
Either way, claiming indigenousness is arbitrary anyway and a red herring/completely irrelevant to a signed contract.

The Haka before a rugby game is a spectacular event but one person doing it in Parliament is very weird.

They litterially learn it in NZ like kids in the US do the pledge.
ChurM8@reddit
don’t you do the pledge every morning in US schools? Haka is not taught like that at all lol
fezzuk@reddit
I'm not American, but know NZ kids generally learn it at school.
Disastrous_Ad_1859@reddit
I never once did it in school myself
A_WILD_SLUT_APPEARS@reddit
I think I technically learned the words at some point in grade school but I don’t really remember ever standing up and saying it as a class or anything.
C-S_Rain@reddit
But what I've explained is largely what i grew up with.
mischling2543@reddit
What happens if someone (like I would have) just says "I don't want learn or do this ridiculous bullshit"

mischling2543@reddit

C-S_Rain@reddit
ChurM8@reddit
So you’re not from either of the countries but you still leave a comment like this hahaha
MyDogIsDaBest@reddit
I'm also reasonably sure that the haka as is performed before sports games (usually rugby) is only really supposed to be performed by men. There's other more dance-y things that the women perform. If I'm right, feels like the woman who started it off is appropriating culture.

The fine is a literal slap on the wrist. We're talking at most $200 per player that the team pays for. It confuses me to no end that teams don't just cop the fine to make it more interesting.
Forretressqt@reddit
It's literally because of World Rugby regulations, NZ Rugby and various arbitrary Maori welcome the idea of responding to/meeting the challenge. That's the whole point.
xxxvalenxxx@reddit
Yeah I know that. But the consequences of breaking that rule is so light that I don't get why teams just forget about it. I mean technically under the rules they can be sin binned or removed from the game or even forfeit the team for doing it but I can't see any well respected ref doing that. Would be the #1 way to torpedo your career.
Forretressqt@reddit
Ah I see, you're right. Perhaps it's some aspect of virtue signalling/team management explicitly telling them they can't; though it would be fucking sick if there was some response each time.
I'm guessing maybe because ABs' were probably the first to have some kind of tradition like the Haka pre-game it's seen as more sacred thus the restrictions (though now we have more Island nations or even the Australian Aboriginal teams doing their equivalent).
xxxvalenxxx@reddit
Put it this way, the only reason we sing national anthems at international sporting events is because of the Haka. That was some Welsh guys response to it back in the late 1800s. The reason for those rules has been stated as being because "it allows photographers to take pics of the haka" literally no one but the photographers and world rugby want that.

I was thinking the same analogy but actually in parliament. Like even pontic Greeks have war dances, but if a pontic Greek minister was to dance it in parliament because he doesn't like a bill he would be seen as ridiculous.
Experience_Material@reddit
This was the first thing I thought lmao.
Nervous_Mail8412@reddit

Baly999@reddit
It's always funny to me when maoris cry colonialism and oppression. Not even 100 years before the english came to NZ they genocided and enslaved a tribe of pacifists minding their own business. Bully got a situation reversal and doesn't like it. 100% deserved. Savages need to be put in their place.
praise-god-bareback@reddit
The genocide of the Moriori happened after European arrival and colonisation of NZ. They hijacked a European vessel and weapons to be able to get there and do it.
Baly999@reddit
I misremembered the timeline. Point still stands. Absolute barbaric behaviour
praise-god-bareback@reddit
Yeh not much different to what Europeans and Americans were doing at the time though eh
Baly999@reddit

The moriori were genocided by two small tribes of the era, saying that the whole Maori people are savages because 1% of the population did something fucked up is like eating a bad apple and coming to the conclusion that all apples are bad.
Also the British crown was aware of what they were doing but they didn't stop it when they could've, sure it doesn't excuse the genocide but like wtf ?
Baly999@reddit
Yes, all savages are bad when they act savagely. Next question.
OleBoyBuckets@reddit
Not being a smart ass but what people did they do this to?
clippervictor@reddit

The point is that you can't equate the actions of a few hundred Maori to the entire race.
r3ddit_is_cancer@reddit
Maori aren't even native to NZ to begin with. They are Polynesians who found NZ before the Europeans did and wiped out native bird species and destroyed the forests. It's not about whoever got there first, it's about who is stronger.
Shabri@reddit
Your timeline is a bit off. The Maori attacked and genocided the Moriori in 1835.
For some reason many people wrongly think that the Moriori were a people who were in NZ before the Maori arrived who they killed when they arrived. Actually they were far away on another tiny island and had been isolated there for many centuries.
Baly999@reddit
Did I say any of that? All I said is they genocided and enslaved a pacifist tribe for no reason other than savagery. And they went out of their way to do it.
Shabri@reddit
It was definitely a brutal and shameful attack. I just noticed you said it was before the British arrived when it was actually after. The Maoris had no idea the Morioris even existed until after the British found them.

Iron-Fist@reddit
What? It's literally a contract between governing groups (specific maori tribes and the British government in this case) and that is like the basis of a rules based society...
duke_weeblington@reddit
And now it’s being invoked to elevate one group of citizens within a single modern state over others, solely on the basis of race. Whatever purpose it once served, its purpose within New Zealand has become invidious racial discrimination.
Iron-Fist@reddit
Basis of association with the signatory groups... Race has nothing to do with it... Like do you think your grandpa's home deed shouldn't be honored either?
duke_weeblington@reddit
The signatory groups are all dead and their descendants are all New Zealanders. There is no Maori nation to deal with as a treaty partner. Race and ancestry have quite literally everything to go with it.
Iron-Fist@reddit
Ok so is your grandpa does his deed and will not matter?
You... You don't know what the treaty in question was about do you? That's specifically what this is about...
Surfing-millennial@reddit

Do not be fooled. They wish to destroy every other culture on the globe. They want to take away all their core values to replace them with progressive ones.

LeeeeroooyJEnKINSS@reddit
Most of NZ is Maori land, the treaty gives them rights to their land, the new conservative government wants to take away those rights so they can sell the resources under those lands (and sea beds) to the Chinese.
Free-Design-8329@reddit

Silverwolffe@reddit
I'm an actual kiwi so I can give a quick rundown.
FremanBloodglaive@reddit
1840, but yes.
David Lange wouldn't put the Treaty into law because he recognized there was no agreed meaning, and without clear meanings you cannot have law for everyone. Of course Geoffrey Palmer just put it in anyway, just because...
djinni74@reddit
It's because he's a goant twat.
Soul_in_Shadow@reddit
There was only one clause of the three that has a discrepancy, essentially the translator mistranslated the word "Sovereignty" to something that is closer to "stewardship". If I remember correctly, Maori didn't have a direct translation of Sovereignty, so he cobbled together an approximation.
Maori activists try to leverage this discrepancy to force through all sorts of bullshit laws and special treatment, the latter being in direct contravention of the third clause of the treaty.
abhi91@reddit
Shh a bunch of 4channers have deemed it cringe in-between hentai jerks. This is not important
_Rook_Castle@reddit
She wants haka-tards to be more equal than everyone else.
Scuba_jim@reddit
It’s a treaty respecting the cultural impact of the Māori. Nothing about them being more special.
CursedKumquat@reddit
The fact that there are very few specifics about the bill in the press give me the impression that a lot is being unreported and they’re spinning a narrative as usual.
meatenjoyer618@reddit
The leftist response to being cornered is ritual chants and demonic screaming.
DappyDee@reddit
So just the regular MO, then.
underlievable@reddit
The bill is dead in the water, the other two parties in government will vote against it in the 2nd reading, PM thinks it's a laughing stock, it only made it to first reading because that was a condition of ACT party being in coalition government. In summary, the problem here is that you are a FOol who knows "Jack Shit" about what you are looking at
Soul_in_Shadow@reddit
The fun part is that the proposed bill isn't even written yet, these assholes are pissing and moaning about the consultation phase
ImTheTrashiest@reddit
Think New Zealand affirmative action. Maoris don't want to lose their mandated percentage of hires even if they aren't more qualified for the job. (They hate equality)
meatenjoyer618@reddit
Yes, NZ has policies to ensure job security for the Maori people. The people who pay the price for this kind of interventionism are citizens and the business owners who are there actually trying to get something done.
Rabid_Goat3@reddit
Equality is being protested against here. Importantly, the actual content being yelled at is:
1) the Government has the right to govern 2) New Zealanders' rights will be protected – including those of iwi 3) we all have equal rights.
We are all EQUALS, we are all ONE PEOPLE.
What's not to like?

People will try to claim that it's somehow racist to not allow them to do that and that it's their culture, but actually forget that many different people have similar war dances, including mine, being pontic Greek, I can't imagine a minister who is pontic Greek starting to dance pyrichios in the middle of the Greek parliament just because he doesn't like a bill and expecting to be taken seriously, and frankly I don't take this seriously either.
