PC won’t boot after enabling EXPO
Posted by desiremusic@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 28 comments
Hi all,
I have AM5 Asus Motherboard after reading some comments that I should enable EXPO/XMP on BIOS, I did it but the system does not boot anymore, screen does not show anything.
I cleared CMOS then the system reset itself a few times finally turned back on but now EXPO is disabled. Any idea what’s going on here?
BIOS has the latest update.

Can you try the following:
Bios (F7) > Advanced > AMD Overclocking > DDR and Infinity Fabric Frequency > DRAM Timing Configuration and enabled EXPO there.

Thanks for this! Worked on my ASROCK board. Suddenly my PC was no longer posting with EXPO enabled.. It was fine for 1+ yrs, and i didn't touch any settings.. but now it's all ok again.
Strangely enabling EXPO the normal way my PC don't load at all anymore and i only see is a black screen with 2 continuous red lights on the mobo, and have to reset the CMOS to even make the PC work.
buuut with your method all is fine! Thanks again! :D

Dude I have spent hours troubleshooting this and playing around with so many different settings and even going as far as just assuming it's a big that will be fixed in later BIOS firmware updates.
After doing this my PC took a minute and then finally booted into Windows with EXPO enabled and the correct RAM speeds. You're a legend, thank you so much.

This is the way. Thank you.

One year later and this worked for me. Wow out of every fix I tried, your random Reddit comment fixed it. Built my first pc a couple weeks ago and was just boutta call it quits and live with slower ram.
Thanks a lot man. Legit no other source mentioned this fix 👍👍

pls Please I have a problem why do I do EXPO and disconnect the power of the device does not take off the motherboard indicates the RAM with a red light, if you solve the same steps above the problem will be solved?
Few_Establishment980@reddit
Does your pc turn on and boot into windows? If you can and your pc works fine then just ignore the motherboard light. It could just be a glitch from ur bios version
However, if it bothers you, you can try to reseat your ram.
Also, you can try to turn on your computer with only one stick of ram at a time. If your computer doesn’t work with one of the sticks, that means that ram is no good.

I apologize if my problem isn't entirely clear. When EXPO is enabled, the computer starts up and everything works fine. However, when I shut down the computer and disconnect it from the power source, and then try to restart it, it doesn't start up, and the motherboard indicates the (RAM) with a red light. This happens when EXPO is enabled, but when it's disabled, the computer starts up normally after the power is disconnected.

yes this happened to me as well. I solved it by following the original comment's fix
However, u can try overclocking your ram manually. Set it something a little slower than advertised speeds. For example, instead of 6000, try 5600. Your motherboard might just not be able to handle 6000 MHZ
Double_Elk75@reddit
So if I follow these steps: BIOS (F7) > Advanced > AMD Overclocking > DDR and Infinity Fabric Frequency > DRAM Timing Configuration, and enable EXPO there,
while leaving AI Tweaker set to Auto/Default
that might solve my problem, right?
Few_Establishment980@reddit
yea
"Can you try the following: Bios (F7) > Advanced > AMD Overclocking > DDR and Infinity Fabric Frequency > DRAM Timing Configuration and enable EXPO there.

This is from original comment. I did exact same thing basically and it was fixed
Double_Elk75@reddit
Your problem was the same as mine, right?
Few_Establishment980@reddit
yes bro
just try it, setting ram is not going to break anything!
Double_Elk75@reddit
Unfortunately I didn't find the expo option with these steps, my board is B650 aorus elite ax ice
Musachan007@reddit
this also works for me. need more upvotes!
tyty!
Double_Elk75@reddit
What was your problem?, I am with activating the expo and disconnecting the device does not take off, will these steps work?
TenshiHimSelf@reddit
HOLY SHIT THIS WORKS, IM CRYING, THANK YOU SOY MUCH
DeenCaecus@reddit
Doesn’t work for me

Try enabling XMP rather than EXPO. They perform very similarly, and some boards that don't like completing POST using EXPO startup just fine using XMP.
Also - you say that the screen doesn't show anything. How long did you give it? I've heard that the first time you boot after enabling EXPO can run upwards of 5-10 minutes (I don't remember how long mine took).

Hello, thanks for the comment.
psimwork@reddit
There's your problem. At 6400MHz this is not going to work.
You need to, at this point, make a choice - which is more important? RAM Speed? Or RAM Capacity?
You can get a 96GB 6400MHz kit (2x48GB) that should work (though if you're not going to do an Infinity Fabric overclock, you're better off with 6000MHz RAM)
You can get 128GB and accept that you will likely never be able to get the speed working at higher than 5200MHz.
I'll say again for emphasis: you cannot get four sticks of RAM working on an AM5 platform running >5200MHz. There ARE people that have done it, but they all have a ton of experience messing with settings manually and have the patience to keep trying. If you're looking for a one-step EXPO/XMP process, you MUST drop down to two sticks of RAM.

I understand. Thank you. Problem is the RAM is working at 3400 at the moment if AIDA and Armoury Crate are showing correctly. I'd be more than ok if they can at least go to 5000.
psimwork@reddit
You're really going to have to work at it, likely in manual settings and with a lot of CMOS resets. Compatibility mode for DDR5 is at 3400MHz.
Ryzen 7000 units supposedly can operate with no issues with 4x sticks at 3600MHz, so if you're going to start messing with the settings, shoot for that first. Then start working your way up slowly. It's highly likely that you'll max out around 4800MHz (and honestly that may be a stretch).
n7_trekkie@reddit
EXPO is an overclock and not guaranteed to work. sorry! what memory kit are you trying to use?
