Where is the best place to buy a quality men’s suit at a reasonable price?

Hi all,
My old suits are really starting to get worn and I think it’s just time for a refresh. Where is a good place to buy a suit for work?
I’m looking for something that is reasonably priced (£250 - £300) that will last a few good years. I don’t wear a suit for work often, but will need to for time to time.
Is my budget reasonable or do I need to go higher? Is it better to buy something off the shelf and get the trousers tailored?
Any tips and hints would be appreciated.
Many thanks

Slaters - good prices & excellent, quite old school service. I don’t know if they still do, but they used to do free alterations too - it was effectively the closest you could get to bespoke at high street level.

The alterations are free but can take up to 3 weeks depending on the branch you visit. Also it’s mainly entry level alterations that can be done though that may vary also.

I'm not sure that the alterations are free - it may depend how substantial they are.
We got our teenager his first suit there earlier this year and it was comfortably within OP's budget even with significant alterations (took nearly a week).

Slaters, undoubtedly. Good range, wide sizing, top end stuff in "Ralphs Room,", minor alerations while you go for a coffee.
M&S are value if they have something to suit (!)

Ralph’s room has their best suits for sure but definitely isn’t top end. Slaters suits are entry level, however i would say their tailor square and Samuel slater suits are the best value for money though it depends on what you look for in terms of quality/style

Slaters

I find Slaters to be like the TKMaxx world of suits. They do often minor alterations which is a good thing and if you can find a decent suit then they’re ok.

Quite accurate description actually lol

Moss - Performance Suit, £279. Tailored fit, wide range of colours. (Minor alterations £26 take a week)

I have a couple of nice suits: one from Moss and an older one from an independent Tailor's in Exeter, Both were between £100 and £200.
I also have a black suit from Primark that I got specifically because it was cheap, to wear at events where it's likely beer or some other drink may get spilled on it, and that happened I wouldn't care.
Thing is, the Primark suit is just as comfortable as the others and doesn't look bad so I wonder just why people feel the need to spend hundreds on a suit.

Marks & Spencer, I have one from there and it's great

Charles Tywhitt, Moss Bros, Slaters
schmerg-uk@reddit
Charles Tyrwhitt make the best office shirts for me (ie both the cut and size options and IMHO the quality) and if I was after a smart suit that's where I'd head first.
Having said that, I've also had some Marks and Spencers suits that have lasted at least until the cut goes out of style (width of lapels, pocket positions, length etc)... it often comes down to the cut of the suit and how well that fits and suits you body shape
Logical_Sea2630@reddit
Do you know what the current cut style is at the moment?
schmerg-uk@reddit
Pretty much what you'll see in the shops... the "current cut" always looks fine, it's only when it goes out of date that you put on an old suit and think "wow, what wide lapels" or "how high are those pockets?" or "how low are those buttons?" or "did we ever think suit trousers should be that flared / skinny / high waisted?" or "funky colour but it looks very 90s" or "shiny suits... really??" etc
OTOH I have a Pierre Cardin suit that I bought in the early 80s that still fits me and has been mostly timeless - even when wide lapels and high waists etc were a thing it always looked "classic" to me

Slaters, for sure. Moss Bros is also a good option.
M&S used to also be a good choice many years ago but their selection has massively decreased since covid and you'll struggle to find someone working that area to advise.
You could try Charles Tyrwhitt, but last time I went their selection was poor and overpriced (YMMV).
shaydesonic@reddit
Charles Tyrwhitt or TM Lewin are good, or John Lewis' Kin range has decent and simple suits for that kind of price
geeered@reddit
Could be worth looking at second hand options + alterations to fit, which could potentially get you a much better fitting higher quality suit for the same price.

Matalan used to be decent but i can barely find anything there these days.
Check next or suit direct.
If you have a moss bros outlet near you, you will definitely find something in your budget.

It's posts like this that make me think I must be the biggest cheapskate in the world. I agonised for months about whether I should stretch to £250 for my wedding suit 😂
The stuff in Next always looks good though.

For work, my go to is Matalan or Slaters
