Looking for Budget-Friendly Meal Recommendations in Budapest
Posted by marcdelaflamme@reddit | budapest | View on Reddit | 33 comments
Hi everyone! My partner and I are traveling to Budapest, and we’re trying to stick to a tight budget for meals. We’d love some suggestions for places to eat or any tips on how to find affordable food around the city. Ideally, we’d like to keep each meal under €10 for both of us.
We’re open to trying local spots, markets, or even takeaway options. We’re also interested in grocery tips or street food spots if that’s more cost-effective.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Why do I see a post like this every week?
Hungary is not a 3rd world country goddamnit, we're in a middle of an inflation, literal families can't afford food, or rent. Go to a grocery store, or into a bakery.
sush-hush@reddit
Hungary is not a 3rd world country but, families cannot afford food and rent. Hmm.

Sadly, foreign people has the romantic image for a post-soviet country, and see us like a cheap paradise - then reality hits.
If they could see how average people live here, because greedy landlords only see rich outlandish people the only source, that would open some eyes. I'm not dreaming of owning a home anymore - it's impossible for us, I dream of owning a block of cheese, or red meat.

So, get a job.

Sorry, food inflation hit us really hard, so kinda the minimum is this 10 Euro.
Here is a good list on google maps with prices:
Reasonable price meals
Ok-Government-3003@reddit
This list is bullshit
Angusburgerman@reddit
can you elaborate? the prices seem accurate to the latest menu photos

I just used it to discover Fecske Presszo.
7,500ft: pp alcoholic drink + entree + side = $22 = €18
This is way better than most touristic places. For Sale Pub was the worst, pretends to be cheap but came to double this.

Kashmiri Büfé (indian) on Nagyvarad tér, and also there is a butcher there just right on the corner. They're selling freshly cooked stuff dine in and takeaway too. Also you could try Kamel Étterem on Mátyás tér 8. district, they sell basic, but good quality Hungarian food. Alternatively you can try marketplaces (Teleki tér for example), or simply buying stuff in Lidl and Aldi and cook at home. Or you can always go to a MOL Fresh Corner Petrol station for hotdogs, they're like €2.5 for the XL ones. Asian fastfood restaurants are also typical go-to places for cheap meals. Nagyvárad tér also has one, and food is super tasty there.
Mastermind6425@reddit
I ignored Fresh Corner whenever I walked past one because it looked like a typical hipster cafe from the outside (by which I mean I expected it to be expensive), but €2.5 for an XL hotdog sounds awesome, thank you for the recommendation!
EntertainmentOne8180@reddit
I could almost say I'm a regular customer at fresh corner petrol stations, their hotdogs are sooo tasty man :D
Mastermind6425@reddit
That makes me even more hyped! I will be back in Budapest in three weeks, can't wait to try it out
Grouchy_Yam8827@reddit
How was it ?
Mastermind6425@reddit
Pretty good, not as big as I thought for the term "XL" but still more than enough for the price, and a really good taste

Do you think you’re coming to a 3rd world country or something?
10 wuros for two people? Yeah, have fun searching for that lil bro.
Marvellous_Mushroom@reddit
Hungary is a 3rd world country. 4000 huf for 2 people + 2 bigmac menu + rice + chicken /potatoes+ chicken at any chinese bufe + 2 fried chicken + 2 rice plate at any fozelekes + 2 gyros + 2 drinks + 2 whopper menu
You only need to be smart and you will find your way.

Lunch menus at a good price on a better canteen kind of level: MyCanteen chain, Frici Papa’s restaurant, Loyola Café, Vin Vin Vietnamese restaurant chain.
Mastermind6425@reddit
I googled your other suggestions because everyone who recommends Frici Papa obviously knows what's good, and goddamn, Vin Vin's website has me drooling. Thank you for the suggestion, I will check it out soon!

10 eur / person or for both of you?
igenigen@reddit
Sorry, but Hungary is not the 3rd world.
€10 per meal for 2 people? That’s not going to happen unless you share a gyros or meal at a Chinese restaurant. The other options are cheap sandwiches from McDonald’s or KFC.
Even ready made sandwiches at ALDI, LIDL, are at least €3 each. Baked goods will be cheap though.
Marvellous_Mushroom@reddit
Sorry, we are a 3rd world country.
ScourgeOfGod420@reddit
Except we literally aren’t LoL
Have you ever been to one? You wouldn’t last 5 minutes lmfao
Marvellous_Mushroom@reddit
Fidesz propaganda erased your common sense. In 2024, Hungary is a 3rd world country, corruption that you will find nowhere but here , cold ass population who can t speak up about issues, pedophilia, Budapest is full of piss and shit smell everywhere you go, let s not talk about education and health..

Almost every single spot I eat at in Budapest comes out to a meal below 10 EURs. 4000 ft? Maybe if I were to have a 800-1000ft drink as well, but that is not at all necessary to have for a meal and is overpriced anyways.
OP 10 eur is completely realistic, I assume you weren't thinking of fancy restaurants anyway.
igenigen@reddit
OP said €10 for 2 people, not €10 / person.

ikea restaurant at örs vezér tere (at the end of m2 metro line)… or just buy something at lidl or aldi and eat at your apartment.
Hardy-fig-dreaming19@reddit
Hummusbar was a go to for me and my classmates when living in Budapest on a uni student budget. Like others have said, inflation has made it more expensive than it was five years ago, but it is still reasonably priced in my opinion

\~4000 forints for two people? hungary has experienced the highest rates of food inflation in the eu, so the days of getting a true bargain are over. if you are strict to keeping your budget you can rule out eating a restaurant and even most kifőzde and butcher shops in the inner districts will surpass your budget, especially if you get a drink. otherwise, you will have to do fast food or lángos.
lunch is the traditional main meal of the day and many restaurants offer a 'napi menu' like this which is a fixed priced and usually two or three humble courses. that is your best chance of getting something around your budget.
you might want to try munch, which is an app that has discounts on food that is about to be thrown out.
since your question for cheap eats is not unique, if you want more suggestions then search this sub.
vahokif@reddit
For lunch there are many places called kifőzde that have cheap lunch until 1 or 2pm.
help_animals@reddit
For groceries Aldi/ Lidle are cheapest. You can type in eatery or kifozde in google maps or langos if you haven't had any yet.
