Reg question

Posted by Severe_Elderberry769@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 9 comments

Hey guys, what reg allows for adding a new gps like a 530 in an old 172. Came up on my cfi, checkride and was part of the reason I busted on the ground.

To be clear, anybody can do nearly anything on the ground to a 172 they own. The real question is, what makes it legal to fly after the work has been done? Hopefully this makes it clear. What makes an aircraft airworthy? Conformance to type and in a condition for safe flight. Does a clapped out 172 with a new 530 install conform to its type certificate? Probably not. So, how would you, say, "supplement" the "type certificate" to reflect new work being done?

Are you referencing the tcds or an addition to afm? It’s Reddit bro, you’re not a dpe doing a checkride or doing a ground. If you know the answer I would appreciate the answer. Fucking Socrates over here answering questions with questions.

As somebody who wants to be a CFI, I would hope you know that there's more than just answering questions. And the "supplement" to the "type certificate" is called a "supplemental type certificate" or STC. Seriously, how was that not blatantly obvious from my previous post?

"instructors" like you are the reason uneducated pilots like you are asking questions on reddit.

No wonder you failed.

You need an STC that would be my guess what the examiner was looking for. What a dumb reason to fail someone for.

Nah there were other reasons too. didn’t teach airspace with a chart out, and said students can’t land in a class b airport, and put down knowledge and flight proficiency regs on top of the eligibility regs required for endorsement. I’m not tripping tho

Not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but [AC 20-138](https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/AC_20-138D_with_Change_1__2.pdf) goes incredibly in-depth into GPS installation and approval.
