I’m going to throw my comment here because it gets me so upset being a member of the tech industry.
We have burned more oil and gas this year than in any other year even with expansion in solar and wind. Why? Data centers.
The AI machine learning market is being driven by billion dollar data centers and the ability to find enough energy to power them. Google is buying nuclear reactors, Microsoft is turning on 3 mile island, meta is trying to harvest power from the sea but at the end of the day it will take a decade to bring those solutions online.
What is Driving the market and tech valuations right now is the ability to power larger data centers by burning everything they can get their hands on.
Coal plants are running at max capacity right now with coal trains rolling in every 15 minutes just to generate output. Has anyone thought to limit tech energy consumption globally? No way
Then what’s the point ?
[Meanwhile Papua New Guinea is pulling out of COP29 while the western elites are chiding them for not putting up with the charade.](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/nov/08/png-cop29-papua-new-guinea-un-climate-summit) The summit is in a petrostate, FFS.
The COP is a UN summit and someone at the UN is putting these oil ministers in charge. Sometimes I wonder if the fact that the IPCC has been so conservative about the impacts of climate change that this is just part of the same play book to kick the can down the road.
We know COP29 is just another damp squib in the already-lost battle on climate change (why host it in Azerbaijan to begin with?) but this just proves that those we put even the slightest bit of trust into doing something are still putting money and the status quo above everything.
COPout can be compared to Edinburgh Festival Fringe, in that it's just performance art this point.
Perhaps COP always has been just a way for oil and gas companies to come together, look over the shoulder of any potential agreements that might hurts their business, and muscle in on it.
