Thread the end of the barrel and make a suppressor for it
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Nah, I did want to do a choke for it. But I didn't go through with it.
soiledmeNickers@reddit
Nice Graboid.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Thanks, that was another outlandish project.

I like your style

"5000 grain of whatever I want" 💀💀💀
sorry_human_bean@reddit
This is the most ridiculous firearm I've ever laid eyes on. I'll take six.
Itsivanthebearable@reddit
Could it shoot smokeless? Would that be NFA legal?
iNapkin66@reddit
You can have a smokeless muzzleloader. It's the "fixed cartridge" that adds legal issues in the US.
But smokeless isn't common for muzzleloaders since it's easy to cause an overpressure if done wrong. Some bulky smokeless powders have been developed specifically to widen the window of safety. But definitely don't just go throw smokeless into a gun intended for BP and hope for the best, because that would be dangerous.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
I would definitely not shoot smokeless in it. Even with Legality aside

Are 3d printed fixtures rigid enough to hold work while milling? What material/print settings have you used to print them?
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
It depends on the application, but in my case, it was perfectly adequate. Most of the print was supported by the vise. I used PLA+ with 4 walls and 35% cubic infill.
It was accurate enough I could edge find off the print and locate features.
Chemical-Prize8856@reddit
Thank you for your reply! Have some plans to use 3d printed fixtures, but wasn't sure if it will actually work.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
I'm at probably the limit of what you can get away with as far as strength. Upping the walls and infill is a good idea or printing in CF Nylon.
Narrow-Letterhead-71@reddit
Boy what the hell is this….. absolutely wild keep it up 👍
ConstantWin943@reddit
You sir…. You sir… are my hero. 😢
It’s magnificent.

The graboid got me man ......I dig it.... gotta upload a range video
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Burt is something like an idol of mine lmao I'll definitely post a video of shoulder firing when it's done. Here's the proof test though.

Here's a lot of photos from the start to where I'm currently at with the project. I honestly don't remember when I started this, but it has been over a year. Some stuff like the barrel, breech, and recoil lug were outsourced as I didn't have the equipment or skill to do it. The barrel and breech were machined by Rapid City CNC and the recoil lug was Catawba valley Armory.
Honestly, when I started this, I knew practically nothing about machining. But I knew that to finish this project, I'd have to learn. So, after a decade of being in the department I worked at, I made the switch to the machine shop so I could learn the skills necessary...and so I could have access to equipment after hours lol.
I also knew that I would need to make a stock from scratch, so I decided to design a duplication machine that was largely 3d printed. I used the machine on some small stuff and thought I had the problems ironed out, but that was not the case, and I unfortunately ruined the $315 laminate stock blank. I'm pretty confident that I fixed the issues with the duplicator and could produce a good stock now, but it's a risk I can not financially take. So, I will be outsourcing that part as well. Still have a lot of work, but I'm getting to the finish line!
iNapkin66@reddit
You can test it on a home made laminated block. If you have access to a jointer, run 2x4s through to get them back to square edges, then do a glue up and cut down to the size of block that you need and test the duplicator with that.
You can make your own laminate stock material the same way, but the wood will cost more than 2x4s of course. Depending where you are, cherry might be the cheapest wood you could get for that off the shelf.
Dolancrewrules@reddit
holy shit. when this is done you need to release documentation on how you did it. I doubt I'll ever have the skill to recreate it but having the pipe dream of perhaps being able too would be cool.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Brother, I didn't know what the fuck I was doing when I set out. I literally looked at a CVA inline muzzleloader and thought "yeah that, but bigger".
I couldn't tell you how many hours I've had in CAD and 3d printing and redesigning, and 3d printing some more.. I was learning as I went along.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Honestly, a big part of this kinda stuff is just being committed. I knew I needed to learn how to machine, so I left my position that I was very familiar with just so I could learn. I was and still am nervous about the decision, but I'm a decently quick learner with that type of stuff, and it has paid off so far.
dankhimself@reddit
It'll pay off in the future. My grandfather and father always told me to take a new avenue once you learn something.
More core skills like these will take your ideas to larger and more complex levels. Looks like the larger level part has already been utilized haha.
This is great.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
Oh absolutely. I'm not able to at this time, but I would love to get a knee mill, a lathe, and a CNC for myself one day.
dankhimself@reddit
I don't have a cnc machine, but I have a Bridgeport and an OLD South Bend lathe.
Lathe is accurate and in great shape, but it is from 1927. I'm going to get something newer and just work on small svmcale custom stuff for motorcycles.
It's so much fun having a nice new shiny part that was just stock metal earlier.
General contracting and motorcycle mechanics, now having home machining on the list helps make cash on the side anytime. The only setback is room for all the tools!
Dolancrewrules@reddit
well hell. I don't reckon anyone could recreate the kind of man-hours that went into this things production. I suspect for a while you'll be the only person with something of this nature, which if I were you, I'd wear with pride. its a hell of a beast you've concoted, and some pretty daring steps you've taken to create it. Wear that with pride brother!

If you can make it shoot a Sabot, id accept you as the new Gun Jesus
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
I have thought about that. I definitely am doing a patched round ball. I might make a diabolo style slug for it down the road.

Weld a pic rail and put a red dot on it for high speed, low drag target acquisition. Seriously though beautiful work.
Bigbore_729@reddit (OP)
I honestly thought about drilling and tapping for a pic rail, but I decided to just do a banded front bead
dankhimself@reddit
This can only be tested in avalanches.
Fine machine work.

Thank you!

Can you actually hunt with this thing? I love it either way
