Is this a good deal? $600 off a $1,500 computer

I've tried specing out the parts but I can't find half of them. Looks like Best Buy stops you from doing that by hiding stuff. Afraid of buying one of those over priced crappy things that only plans to sell when its on sale.
Anyone want to tell me. Looking for a starter level gaming PC for my son. Price is in Canadian Dollars
Primary-Answer-2042@reddit
It is not even sold by BB. They are just shilling for the seller, so you are probably out of luck with trying to get Best Buy to honor any kind of warranty or refund.
Gamrchik369@reddit
This is a better deal OP:
https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/open-box-acer-nitro-n50-gaming-pc-intel-core-i5-14400f-512gb-ssd-8gb-ram-intel-arc-380-windows-11/18249033.
Also I would recommend 8 extra GB of ram and the video card isn’t good enough, it has a 500 watt psu which will power a 4070..
dweller_12@reddit
That is not a $1500 computer. It is a gaming PC from 2017 worth around $300.
vivaciousnexus@reddit
Not just a bad deal - it's borderline scammy. A decade-old i7 and a GPU from 2017? You could build something way better for $900 today.
NormanQuacks345@reddit
Yeah do not buy this op
TactikalSoup@reddit
Well, he can buy it, but it's a shit deal.
BaconFinder@reddit
He's out of line, but he's right
Plucault@reddit (OP)
Thanks everyone
Cognoscope@reddit
Per your own observations, the key reason not to buy a pre-built (besides the value proposition) is that retailers cut a deal with the mobo OEM for a “variant” of a stock mobo & a custom BIOS for it. Your ability to update the BIOS to accommodate future component upgrades will be little to none.
BeebeePopy101@reddit
It has windows 10 because its hardware is so outdated it doesn’t officially support windows 11. Even the gpu isn’t officially supported anymore by amd. This is a bad deal for 500, let alone 900, and especially 1500. Very surprising to see an outright and unashamed scam from Best Buy.
dphizler@reddit
If you're buying a new computer, I would want it to be windows 11 compatible which I don't think it is.
MarbleGarbagge@reddit
1500 is the anchor point. 600 is the intended price.
The second price looks good because the anchor is absurdly high. No it’s not a good price.
I have a buddy with a rx 580 that is upgrading soon because he’s struggling to play most modern games. He got his pc from someone else for around 400.
Artistic_Papaya21@reddit
Maaaan Best Buy is getting down 🥲
MichaelStarz@reddit
I like green man gaming.
jerryeight@reddit
Check pre-builts from Costco. Most are decent values.
Long-Patient604@reddit
NOT AT ALL. You can build an amazing PC new for 900$.
Role_Playing_Lotus@reddit
The PC Builder channel on YT passed some videos for best prebuilts of this year (at various budget levels). I would check that out to at least give you some comparisons if you're shopping for prebuilts.
LilGrippers@reddit
Rx580 is only good for browsing file explorers and meeting league of legends at this point
SeafoodDuder@reddit
Basically what the other commenter said. This is not worth the price.
That RX 580 is like 8 years old.
L1ghtbird@reddit
Additionally driver support has been cut down to security updates only
8000RPM@reddit
200 CAD is a good proce for this being a first PC. Anything higher is a hard pass.
ShamilBurkhanov20020@reddit
Considering modern requirements, that PC is close to being E-Waste. Might as well get him a switch lite for 200$ since that would be more usable.
8000RPM@reddit
I disagree with this. I just built a pc with a RX580 for a beginner. It was totally fine and yielded good FPS for rocket league and fortnight at 1080p. Rocket league is unplayable on switch and fortnight is more tolerable. This was a beginer with limited budget that wanted a PC for school and gaming capabilities.
BuyerFriendly121@reddit
Don't buy that. For 900 bucks you should be getting at least a mid-range graphics card, not that piece of junk one. In addition, intel works best with nvidia graphics and amd works best with radeon graphics. Its best practice to use those together.
Idk why you wouldn't be able to find the parts to compare on newegg or elsewhere, its pretty clear what's in it from the listing.
Evening-Technology-7@reddit
Jesus, I wouldn’t even play on this if it was given to me for free 😩 Nevermind paying $900 for it that’s an absolute rip off
tybuzz@reddit
Rule 4, try r/prebuilt instead. It's old and refurbished, with a 10 year old CPU and 8 year old gpu. It would struggle playing even the most basic current higher end games.
Steezeballl@reddit
Age is but a number, my 6700k and 1080ti (aka 10 and 8 years old) still play anything at 60-144+fps albeit some more graphically demanding or unoptimized games need settings turned down, but I'm not really playing those anyways. However I wouldn't buy or sell this at 700-800CAD, or however much bestbuy would sell that thing without the e-waste tier peripherals.
Justino_14@reddit
I can say $5000 pc and it's $4500 off, doesn't make it a good deal. All an illusion.
No-Hedgehog9995@reddit
This is maybe $500 CAD. They add 32 gb of ram to make it seem flashy, but you'll never need more than 16 with this thing. They don't list the cpu but say it's an i7 to draw you in. Wouldn't be surprised if it's a 7700 or something really old.
dweller_12@reddit
It says i7-6700.
s0ciety_a5under@reddit
in the specifications tab it states Intel Core i7-4790 Processor
So now it's not only worse, but we don't know how bad it actually is.
Annual-Pitch8687@reddit
Don't buy PCs from Best Buy. They are a scam. They are ALL overpriced outdated trash. I'm still regretting my own PC purchase form them.
ShamilBurkhanov20020@reddit
Read the spec sheet, research the parts, wait for holidays, and compare prices. BTW you could show Best Buy prices from other sites and they would price match for you.
ShamilBurkhanov20020@reddit
Price does not determine it's actual worth. I could price a macintosh from 1990 at 500000$ but that does not mean it actually is worth that much. Try sticking to 1-2 year old hardware. RTX 3000 series Nvidia GPUs and Ryzen 7000 CPUs are good. Try avoiding bundles and go for individual parts of a setup. This is good for 1000$. https://us-store.msi.com/gaming-pcs/CODEX-Z2-B8NUC-269US?filter=45
bamms1212@reddit
The description says it’s an i7-6700, but the spec breakdown says Intel Core i7-4790 Processor. It’s just red flag city with this PC.
ohCrease@reddit
Based off of the CPU and GPU mentioned already I can't say the price is even close to worth it.
I don't live in North America but from a google search on Amazon US an Amazon - AMD RX 580 goes for USD 130. An Intel i7 6700k (better chip than included in this PC, note the extra k at the end) goes for USD 150. Motherboards for this chip can be gotten for USD 70+. The RAM doesn't give much info but from what they mentioned, 32GD DDR4 goes for about \~50. All that's missing is a case and a cooler (for the K chip, non-K came with one) which could be gotten for probably around 150. This totals to 550 USD (\~770 CAD). The peripherals with it though are intersting but they are probbably quite cheap in terms of cost and quality so they can make more profit.
Final thing to note is that these parts are rather old in this day and age, CPU came out in 2015 and the GPU in 2017.
dweller_12@reddit
i7-6700K goes for like $40. i7-9700K is $100 USD.
ohCrease@reddit
Even better for the point I was trying to make tbh. I just looked on Amazon as i'm not familiar with the best pricing as I'm not from US or Canada
Naerven@reddit
If you really want to buy an 8 year old computer for about what it would have cost new in 2016 then sure it's good. Otherwise maybe you should BUILD A PC like the focus of this subreddit.
KingKandyOwO@reddit
It *was* a $1500 computer at some point, probably not within the past few years
kovu11@reddit
i7-6700 with RX 580 (8GB)? That is exactly what i have now, planning on selling it in 4 months for 200-300€.
