Concerning Rule 3 - 'No Current (post-2008) Politics and the 2024 US Presidential Election
Posted by WoefulKnight@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 341 comments
Greetings, fellow Xennials!
The results of the 2024 Presidential Election have stirred up a lot of emotions and reflections in people across the world. As your mod team, we have always aimed to ensure this subreddit remains a fun, nostalgic space for sharing our favorite memories from growing up. We have always felt that because Reddit offers plenty of other places to dive deep into politics, we wanted to keep this sub as a more lighthearted corner of the internet.
However, we understand that recent events have a lot of people reflecting on what this election means for our generation and our future. These discussions can be a valuable release valve as well as provide a space for folks to explore their thoughts and feelings about the election.
With that in mind, we have decided to temporarily relax Rule #3 in this thread only. Feel free to discuss the results of the 2024 election here, so long as the conversation remains civil. Please note that this is the only thread where conversation about the election will be allowed. Any new posts about the election or other political events post-2008 will still be removed immediately.
Thanks, and let’s keep it respectful!

I fully understand the echo chamber and only interacting with your own bubble now. I really thought Harris was going to win this one. I never dreamed of what essentially turned into a blow out.
Wonderful-Emu-8716@reddit
I mean 51-48 isn't a blowout, it's an evenly divided country that has a somewhat strange electoral system that turns a slight majority into a blowout in the electoral college.
That said, almost every part of the country and every demographic went more red--and that shocked the hell out of me.
qualmton@reddit
America is not okay. Everyone is scared and looking for answers.
At_the_Roundhouse@reddit
It’s New York City’s maga increase that floored me (I say that as a New Yorker)
ThreeCraftPee@reddit
Yep. Still, trying to put the pieces together but honestly I think I'm gonna outbthisnpuzzle in the closet. I seriously think I done, no more politics or Colbert at 1030 every night...nope, im just done. Dog walks and flowers and dinners, that is my new life. I'm done with all this. Lord knows I tried
mikeisboris@reddit
Yeah. I just unsubscribed from news and politics subs, finally deactivated Facebook. I don’t want or need to be angry all the time.
I still get the Sunday newspaper, mostly to use in the fireplace if I’m honest, but I think that may be my new way of somewhat keeping up with the world.
The physical newspaper doesn’t have a comment section I’ll be drawn to read.
30HelensAgreeing@reddit
Hey! Newspapers are for more than kindling!!
They really are superior when used in place of paper towel or actual towels for cleaning glass. I’d subscribe just for that, but coffee filters work great too.
I say this as a former print journalist, and think I’ve earned my right to. If you need more kindling, I have this old diploma you can use.
Zsirhcz1981@reddit
As a current printer of newspapers, I always tell folks that it’s going to the bottom of a birdcage.
Zsirhcz1981@reddit
As a newspaper printer, I am thrilled to hear I’m not the only Xennial taking a paper!!!!
LoveYouNotYou@reddit
Oooh, look at you, with a fireplace...must be nice... Probably get some coffee/tea/wine and just drink while it crackles, probably got a cat or a dog to pet and cuddle, probably can a read a book and just be busy... Niiiice!
Jelly lol
mikeisboris@reddit
Lol I literally have a fire going right now with music playing, and whiskey on the rocks on the table next to me. The corgi is laying near the fire all cozy.
Thanks for the perspective, things are pretty great for me internet friend.
donnadoctor@reddit
Dog tax please
mikeisboris@reddit
Prestigious_Egg_6207@reddit
Ooh what’s his (her?) name?
mikeisboris@reddit
Oliver Biscuit :)
donnadoctor@reddit
That’s delightful
Prestigious_Egg_6207@reddit
Omg adorable. Give him some rubbins from me.
donnadoctor@reddit
Thank you!
LoveYouNotYou@reddit
Aww, no problemo!
That set up (from the dog tax picture) looks so nice! Oooh, you got it good homie lol
Enjoy. It's been rough I'm sure but you made it so far... Nice job 👏
DuranDourand@reddit
Hey I have a corgi too. She overweight and gets hot quickly so she stays away from the fireplace though.
mikeisboris@reddit
Ours is weird, he’s not very food motivated, he basically gets all the dog food he wants and only eats an amount that keeps him at a healthy weight.
We do call him Ollie Pizza Crust though, he is a bit of a begger.
DuranDourand@reddit
Haha. Mine will knock over my 6 year old if he is walking with food to steal it from him. She is a hairy pig.
mikeisboris@reddit
Here’s our loaf.
Medical-Purple@reddit
We just lost our pupper of 13 years this past month. My black speedbump/lego(always tripping over her)
mikeisboris@reddit
Aw, I’m sorry man. Ours is nine and I’m so sad that he is getting old, he’s my best bud.
Medical-Purple@reddit
She was mine as well. But she needed to go to chase the big bone in the sky, cancer was getting to her
DuranDourand@reddit
Oh potato dog. Such a rollie pollie dog.
Medical-Purple@reddit
Always time to stop and say hi to the puppers
Mother_Sand_6336@reddit
Reddit: C’mon guys! Get upset and angry about politics!
Xennials: Nah, man, I’m chilling with my corgis.
DuranDourand@reddit
Damn straight.
Hairy_Ad4969@reddit
Things are going pretty great for me too. Unfortunately I had to leave for a work trip this morning at 4AM instead of staying home to console the family and reassure them it’s gonna be ok.
TransomBob@reddit
I just downloaded an extension for reddit where I can plug in specific keywords and it hides all posts containg those keywords. It's cleaned up reddit for me, and has helped my sanity immensely.
NothingAndNow111@reddit
Ooh, what's it called?
jrice441100@reddit
I did the exact same thing today.
MelpomeneAndCalliope@reddit
I’m thinking about unsubbing from those.
mikeisboris@reddit
I figure I can always resub when I’m willing and ready. I tend towards pessimism already though and I’m just tired. I don’t need to be angry all the time.
New_Needleworker_473@reddit
I hadn't used Facebook since 2016 when I deleted it in 2019. I mostly read the news unless there's something going down "live" that I need to see. I gave up on that shit a long time ago. It's weird. People act very strange when I say I don't have social media. I'm pretty sure my kid's friends' moms think I'm in witness protection or work for the agency or something. Lol!!
WinFam@reddit
They do though! Like look at you like you have 3 heads or something!
And then there are the ones who say "good for you" or "I should do that", or "I wish I didn't", etc.
VaselineHabits@reddit
Yeah, the husband and I are basically blocking any news. I aged in dog years the first time, I don't have the emotional or mental capacity to worry about everything he'll destroy.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
Yeah still going to vote. Will be sad when they round up the Hispanics and put them into camps. But not going to pay attention anymore it’s too maddening to see what Russian disinfo is doing to us, and so easily.
NightWriter500@reddit
I legitimately think I’m going to have to talk to my wife about not trying for another baby. It’s just too risky right now and I can’t deal with the thought of her bleeding out while a doctor says he won’t risk his job to help. It’ll be too late in four years, so I think we just won’t have any more kids. That makes me sad.
CyberMike1956@reddit
Get real, no doctor or nurse is going to let your wife bleed out. Just because this is repeated 12000 times on reddit doesn't mean it's true, even in Florida.
NightWriter500@reddit
It sucks that you don’t know that this has already happened multiple times. https://www.fox8live.com/2024/11/04/woman-suffering-miscarriage-dies-days-after-baby-shower-due-states-abortion-ban-report-says/
CyberMike1956@reddit
That's in Texas not in Florida as I referenced. Probably fake too.
NightWriter500@reddit
I understand that there is no way to square reality with your head, and that’s something you’ll have to live with the rest of your life. But just because something happened that you don’t like, doesn’t mean it’s fake. Also who the fuck cares about Florida? Who said a god damn thing about Florida? I don’t live in Florida and that state doesn’t have shit to do with me. And neither do you.
CyberMike1956@reddit
Wow, get some help. Talk to a mental health professional.
BIGepidural@reddit
If you're really serious get a vasectomy because they're gonna go after birth control and they may even stop vasectomies; but you can have it done promptly as a day surgery and it can always be reversed.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
They won’t do anything to men
BIGepidural@reddit
If they want more babies they could absolutely control men's vasectomies as well.
Working class men are drones to them. They're meat for slaughter in war, voting power and something to be used to make more profit.
If they want more babies they will make it happen.
Necessary_Range_3261@reddit
You’re our age and still planning babies? Ugh! I can’t even imagine.
Medical-Purple@reddit
Don't knock it...it keeps you young....ish, lol. Got a 2 and 4 yrold, both boys and just as big of troublemakers as their dad
NightWriter500@reddit
I’m like 44. Wife’s 42. Got a four year old.
Jermine1269@reddit
This is the right answer I think. Still vote, but just try to shut out as much as possible in the meantime.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
EliteCheddarCommando@reddit
Respectfully, I don’t think will happen. That Hispanics will be rounded up into camps. I’ve seen that stated on Reddit throughout the day. I just can’t envision that happening.
CalamityClambake@reddit
I mean, I didn't envision women dying of sepsis in hospital parking lots, but here we are.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
Family separation was absurdly cruel too
That_Skirt7522@reddit
I’m not giving up on politics. It’s hard and people have died to make changes. This is a a bump in the road. No one benefits when we disconnect long term. Take a day or week or months to regroup, but keep voting and understanding the needs of others so change comes one day. If you totally let go the other side (whichever party is the other side to you) will keep going and convincing people their way it’s the best way.
CharlieTrees916@reddit
I did this a couple years ago and it helped my mental health. I still come across news on Reddit, but I shifted my focus to more local issues and making progress in my personal life instead of stressing.
medusa_crowley@reddit
This is the way. I’m so grateful to live where I do.
Melraiser81@reddit
Me too, a couple years ago. Reddit is the only SM I participate in so it's been fairly easy. I still read things here and there every week because I don't want to bury my head in the sand either. But it doesn't need to take up so much of my time and energy in my daily life. I got enough problems, including depression and feeling irritated with others. Don't need these selfish, frustrating politicians and talking heads riling me up more every single day. It's been a lot better for my mental health.
mtb0022@reddit
I usually listen to news podcasts on my commute. Today I only listened to music. I know what the news is, and I’m not sure when I’ll go back to the podcasts.
tastysharts@reddit
I have so many books I want to read.

The people of the USA spoke with the power of the vote. I thought a lot of people would be fed up with the direction the country was headed to, already in. I was right. I hope that we will all prosper and have a great next 4 years. As a country of people with different views and beliefs, I think that it is owed to us as a nation to have the very best. We all work hard, and hopefully, all have the pride that we have, in the greatest nation on the planet. You can look at it as her and the current administration had the chance to do great things and fix the current problems that everyday Americans deal with on a daily basis. They had the chance to fix it, and from my opinion, I did not feel that happened. To act like now is the time to do what should have already been done is silly. Everyone is entitled to views and opinions that directly affect daily life. I think one of the major issues in this country is the media. Different outlets are biased in different ways. Just in the last 24 hours, I've seen so much contradicting reporting. If we just take a step back and take in all the facts, do your own do diligence and make our own views and opinions, we will all be better off. I'll sign off with a hope that we all continue to prosper and provide for our families and ourselves. That's what we are all here for anyway, right? The American dream? Isn't that what we all do the grind for? I for sure can say that's my main goal. This sub is awesome for the trips back to the good ol days, when life was easier and simple. I want the same for my kids as much as that will be a difficult journey. I hope everyone on this sub continues the greatness that makes us xennials, the best generation that has come.
WinFam@reddit
I can't decide if I want to say how much I like this post, or to tell you that I hope you still feel this way in 8 years (our age difference) because I could see myself having said something similar a few years ago.
jholla8943@reddit
I appreciate your reply. You can say both too. I'm assuming your 8 years my senior. I feel like I will have the same feeling then too. My kids are 8 and 10 and in 8 years they will be on the verge of young adulthood. I hope i can set them up for success. Who knows what the world will be in that time, anyone's guess could be right. I just hope I will still be here then. Tomorrow isn't promised to anyone. All I know is if I can help in anyway (voting, parenting, and providing a stable environment for them to flourish) I'm going to do what I feel is in their best interest. It's funny that my kids told me that the kids in school were arguing about who the next president should be. As cute as that is I told them to leave it up to the the adults. I said luckily they don't need to worry about it and just worry about being a kid. I told them I would love to be back in their shoes again and enjoy childhood. They dont understand being an adult just as i didnt at their age. Of course they don't get it or understand really when I say that. Kid me wouldn't of understood either. Sometimes it's hard for me to be back in their shoes and think of things on their level. The innocents of childhood and keeping them a kid for as long as possible is the goal. This world is so different from what we grew up in. It's so easy for them to grow up too fast with social media, smart phones and all the rest of it. I didn't really start worrying about the world and politics until maybe right after my first was born. Putting yourself second in life once you have kids really puts everything else into perspective. Sorry for another long rant. I really didn't want to get deep into all the politics shit. I just wanted to vent and add to the post on my view on it. I just want my kids to have the best in everything, as any parent would too I think. That's my view on it.
unbalancedcentrifuge@reddit
Man...careful saying that. I suggested the same thing, and every amateur political analyst came out of the woodwork to inform me that the results were apparently written on the wall before yesterday.
Zeqhanis@reddit
And now, with abortion bans, abortifacient drug bans, and a plan to make pornography illegal while declaring sex education to be pornography, thereby making it illegal, we're going to see a massive increase in single, young mothers who can't afford to pay for their kids.
In addition to ruining those girls' prospective futures, It will be a huge strain on the economy and will increase gang violence, with gangs sometimes being one of the only sources of older male guidance. I doubt destroying the DoE is going to help either.
Kellysi83@reddit
I knew she was going to lose. I used to be deep in it. I’ve always been a super progressive person, but I really tried to step back as I saw how politics was tearing family and friends apart. Once I stepped outside and honestly started humbly listening for any ounce of substance from the opposition I started to see that my side hasn’t always operated with the most credibility and in many ways we dropped the ball on working class people.
WinFam@reddit
Can you say more about this? I honestly feel like I have trouble understanding things, and just from this bit it sounds like I might be able to follow you. 📣👂🏻
MerryMortician@reddit
Half the things I’ve tried to say have been downvoted to oblivion or shadowbanned. This website BREEDS echochambers.
Cutthechitchata-hole@reddit
Me too. It's really shocking to me the view of my fellow Americans. Sad and my daughter and mom are the only 2 that understands
HeyKayRenee@reddit
I am a Black woman who is pregnant right now and I absolutely will have to be very careful about who I let around my child. Of course, I was always going to vet his playmates and social circle, but now I see some household ideologies are straight up dangerous to his well-being. Certain people will not be allowed near him.
CROBBY2@reddit
If you dove into the data it wasn't that surprising, especially considering Trumps over performance history. But nobody in the media wants a blow out election because it isn't good for business so I believe there was some artificial storytelling going on.
Johnykbr@reddit
Seriously. The analytics were supporting this for over 3 weeks. People need to step outside of Reddit which is full of astroturfing and partial truths.
Sp4ceh0rse@reddit
If I learned anything working in the ICU during COVID it’s this: people are not good. Or smart. They do not care about others.
GustavSnapper@reddit
This is the most real statement of all time. Left leaning voters post on left leaning social media, create their own circle of left leaning friends and family and all stand around shouting at each other to support left leaning ideologies and then act super fucking shook when “nobody” is listening and the results didn’t go the way their chamber was telling them.
There’s no sensible discourse anymore, you’re either a stupid communist or a Nazi if you don’t agree depending on what side you’re on. The future is legitimately doomed because people have based their entire personality around their favourite elected billionaire.
There are many bad people in politics who will continue to remain in politics, but we’ll never change the system because we’re too busy fighting each other and not the system itself.
SmCaudata@reddit
There are plenty of conservative echo chambers too. Being around like individuals is soothing at times. Just don’t have your head in the sand. 😀
razorduc@reddit
Might be part of the problem. "Oh, we have this in the bag. Polls say so. I don't need to fill this out and drop it in the mail."
djsynrgy@reddit
When my wife told me that Biden had officially dropped out and Harris was going to run against Trump, my visceral reaction was "we're f***ed."
As I later expanded on with a friend this morning, "I like Harris; I also know my country."
The Rules haven't applied to The GOP since (at least,) 2000. This didn't surprise me, but it's bolstered my disappointment in humanity, and my fury at the ether.
medusa_crowley@reddit
It’s largely your last paragraph that makes me think we need to go full bore into fascism before we get out of this, because they will continually make it our fault every time otherwise.
beebsaleebs@reddit
I felt the same way. I remember Hilary. America hates women.
ProfessorOfLies@reddit
I would say this was also a result of a deliberate echo chamber created for much of the us still getting their news from television. All the local news stations that were bought by Sinclair media group so they could push a specific narrative to those with little other options helped to sane wash trump for most of the us. While he is getting lampooned all over the internet the vast majority of the fly over states got a different narrative. We were not operating from the same set of facts. This is the direct result of the war on education, free press, and ultra jingoism.
medusa_crowley@reddit
I realized this in 16 and spent a lot of the next several years trying to fill in knowledge gaps, until it finally hit me:
They WANT that “different set of facts.” It makes them feel great.
And it doesn’t matter what the truth actually is.
Clear-Tale7275@reddit
It's not just Sinclair. The Philadelphia Action News totally glossed over the stakes in this election and the horrible behavior by Trump
ProfessorOfLies@reddit
Absolutely. I didn't mean to limit it to JUST them.
Clear-Tale7275@reddit
I'm not sure you did. I was just adding my own observation because some have said that they don't own the city news so they can be more honest. Not from what I have seen.
sublimeshrub@reddit
You're right, Trump isn't an organic grass roots movement. His largest donor was Rob Walton one of the owners of Walmart, and the owner of the Denver Broncos whose interests are diametrically opposed to those who just voted for Trump.
To make your point though CNN is owned by a right wing billionaire. NBC is owned by Comcast one of the least popular corporations in the world. Not to even mention the absolute deluge of bullshit hitting people's inboxes. My mom gets dozens of word salad newsletters in her inbox every day. They run banners that capture our location and tailor the propaganda directly to her. One of these newsletters is The Epoch Times which is owned by a literal Chinese cult, Falun Gong.
ProfessorOfLies@reddit
I also didn't mention fox news or newsmax. Also billionaire owned propaganda machines. Some are just more subtle than others. We need grassroots local journalism and protect our teachers if we are ever going to get out of this.
ZipperJJ@reddit
I don’t think any of us could truly handle having 51% of the social media we consume or in-person interactions we have be pro-Trump. Especially just for the sake of not being in a bubble.
I’d rather be ignorant in the bubble with other Redditors than out there amongst the crazies
ScreenTricky4257@reddit
Maybe, but the problem with that is that if people on the other side don't live in their media bubbles and hear both sides, they'll have an advantage.
Medical-Purple@reddit
That is sadly an isolated point of view. Not all of us watch Fox, or any Major media, nor listen to numerous commentators. It's easier to pull news that is less bias from all sources, and then compare stories to see who is telling a story(here is a hint, they all do. Sensationalism sells). I cannot remember the last time I actually turned on Fox, CNN, NBC, or ABC. Even last night, I was getting my results from Rueters, and they have a bias. Being in a bubble is a bad place to be, because you start to lose the color of the world. We can have differences of opinions, and be cordial about it. Due to social media and the associated tv shows and movies, one side believes that the other is evil or facist or racist or communists, so on and so forth.
moeru_gumi@reddit

Synthea1979@reddit
I had the "benefit" of having clients who watched Fox News while I was at their homes (I do home support for the disabled and elderly) and so I saw it coming. I would have been surprised if Harris had won.
Both the RNC and DNC need to dissolve and a proper system to determine the candidate put into place. The fact that Trump and Harris are the best the parties could come up with is appalling.
BearCat1478@reddit
Yes! I feel ya. It's what needs to happen.
_MistyDawn@reddit
I completely agree about RNC and DNC -- both sides are a clown show at this point.

sloppypickles@reddit

It really depends on how you curate it! I also don’t have the app on my phone. Which helps a little.

I dropped social media years ago and just today muted the political and news subs on here.
therog08@reddit
I’ve stayed completely away from politics since covid. I’ve always muted them on here, today it’s just everywhere. I do not watch the news, ever. I don’t care if it keeps me uninformed, my sanity matters more to me.
HockeyandTrauma@reddit
I deleted fb and Twitter apps lastnight (but not my accounts). Kept reddit for now.
forprojectsetc@reddit
I’m trying to do the same. I unsubbed from every news and politics subreddit on my feed.
Not trying to stick my head in the sand, it’s just that all the fears, opinions, and speculations start to become certainties in my mind. It’s not going to do me any good to be in a near constant panic attack for the next X years.
The situation is now well beyond my control. Constant worry isn’t productive.
originalbrowncoat@reddit
I had this argument with people the first time Trump won. I went on a complete media blackout for almost a year, and a friend basically said I was a traitor. But we have no control here. Trump can burn this country to the ground but that doesn’t mean we have to watch.

What good did your friend think would come from wallowing in it all constantly?

Cyberpunk is so good. It's definitely a great escape.
JagarHardfart@reddit
I played it shortly after release for the ps4 and it was almost unplayable. Saw they were doing amazing updates and told myself once I got a ps5 I'd try it again. I'm excited to dive in.
oldmancoyote22@reddit
That's what sold me one it, plus it was like $10 clearance for the ps4 disc haha. But knowing it was getting the ps5 upgrade and then the edgerunner update just dropped and fixed everything. Plus having just watched Edgerunners at that time I was sold on it.

Horizon Forbidden West and God of War are amazing as well. More games, less news.

Yeahh. I've been trying to stay off the internet today. Trying. It's really just doomscrolling at this point.

What's done is done. Those who got elected are elected and will do whatever it is they're going to do. I can't do anything about it now, so may as well just buckle up and see what happens, but no sense stressing over what I can't control

I think I'll have no choice but to clean up my reddit feed lol. I've never joined one but have plenty of recommendations from news related subs, mostly of the political nature.
I'll check the news here and there and definitely go vote every 2 years. But for the sake of my mental health as well, I don't want to be bombarded by this stuff constantly when shit is bad.

Pre-existing condition protections are going to get scrapped, but that doesn’t mean your insurance company or employer are required to ditch it. If they do, they should get bad PR and people running for the door for doing so. We have to hold them accountable and make it hurt.

Right. We can boycott the companies that discriminate.

Zbrchk@reddit
Tbf, I think this is largely true for white middle class kids.
I grew up poor in a mixed race family. Thanks to a college education, I am doing infinitely better than my parents ever did and I’m raising twice as many kids and by myself at that.
ICCthrowawayy@reddit
For context I grew up poor and white in rural Texas, but I agree my take is a very white one. Unfortunately I think race relations have peaked too, and are about to head backwards quickly.

They have been going backward for about 25 years due to the culture wars waged by a certain group. It started to become particularly bad after 2008. Growing up, I suffered some bullying for being güero, but for the most part we found the old racists repugnant and ignorable. But I also grew up in an urban ghetto area (due to gangs, I didn’t encounter young lower class blacks) where I encountered just about every racial group living together in peace. My childhood friends were the children of immigrants from all over the world.

I'm working a lot harder and a lot more to barely make bills. My husband's field has gone haywire and he has zero job security right now.
This election makes me feel like I can't breathe, we were going to try for a family but now. I don't think I can do this to a child.

If your decision to have a child or not is based on who the President is, you may want to take a break from Reddit and MSNBC for a while.

I admit I have two kids myself (16 & 9), but it fucking BLOWS MY MIND that people (like my sister) are willingly and actively getting pregnant left and right. What the fuck are they thinking???
Purple-Bell-218@reddit
Exactly or how many people in their 40s are having children nowadays. Are they not seeing the world around us? Scary stuff.

My sibling is nearly 41 and seems to be considering trying for their first kid. Like, you gotta be out of your mind.

I’m terrified for the kids in my life - nieces, nephews, kids of friends and cousins - but I looked at my husband this morning and said that I was once again happy to be childfree.
Our nieces and nephews are our beneficiaries and I hope that whatever we leave to them will ease the burden of whatever happens down the line.

I’m doing only marginally better than my parents. I grew up in poverty and now make well into the six figures. We severely underestimate just how bad inflation has become, and my parents are Gen Jones, so they were dirt poor compared to some of their older siblings. I always hit above my weight socially and my circles included kids from the middle class part of town, so I know what their lives were like. That requires such a comically high income these days that it is mind boggling.
Compared to my grandparents, I’m working poor.
CharacterWitless78@reddit
This is what I'm afraid of for my kids. Both are still in grade school and it's going to be harder for them to have the way of life that we grew up with
ICCthrowawayy@reddit
We're in about 1930 right now, and whether it's a war or some other grand reckoning, about 10 years away from a massive global paradigm shift. Our kids will be able to rebuild the world in a better way - the ones that survive at least.
djsynrgy@reddit
I hate how accurate this feels.
ICCthrowawayy@reddit
I'm not being a nihilist, I don't think, when I say it's obvious the current trajectory of most of the world is clearly heading for some kind of great explosion. Countries are abandoning democracy and lower-case-L liberal values across the Western World. Russia invading Ukraine is the first military action in a developed country since - I mean I guess you can count the Troubles in the 70s and 80s or the Falklands, but really since the invasion of France. Wealth inequality is topping 18th century Versailles. We're seeing religious intolerance growing like crazy across the world.
It's like that moment in a musical where everyone sings their melody at the same time -the One Day More or the La Resistance - but it's all the things that have led to massive global violence.

Eh, hard to justify historically. The generation of the Great Depression absolutely had it worse than their parents. Prior to that it was a bunch of generations of things being generally shitty unless you were born wealthy. The “Greatest Generation” and the Boomers are a huge outlier historically. Two generations back to back of massive growth and social mobility. Now we’re back to the way things were before. But with more social acceptance. Homosexuality and interracial marriage were straight up illegal before. Now both are either accepted or tolerated nationwide.
So things are worse than they were for our parents and grandparents, but much better than our great grandparents and the generations before them.

I've been finding solace in listening to old Linkin Park songs. After hearing a few friends share how they did their best to instill hope into their scared teenage daughters, I made a second cup of coffee, played 4 Non-Blondes' "What's Up," and let myself cry.
I'm a therapist, so I'm trying to keep my light and other's lights lit, so to speak. So I remind myself that I'm part of the bridge generation. We’ve lived through transition and turbulence, and we’ve become experts at adapting and thriving. While the world shifts in challenging ways, we carry both resilience and a deep sense of community. Use that unique perspective to foster kindness, build connections, and create safe spaces for those around you. By staying grounded and compassionate, we become agents of hope and change in a world that needs both more than ever. This also helps us because altruism feels good.
Last year, I saw a comment on this sub recommending the book Everything Is F*cked: A Book About Hope to help cope with existential dread. I got the audiobook and found it enjoyable and helpful. The author writes about how humans have been F*cked throughout history and how life is more meaningful when we engage in meaningful activities and respond to situations using value-based behaviors. A lot of what he writes about is similar to what is taught in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I highly recommend this book and am grateful to whoever wrote that comment recommending it a while back. If I knew which thread it was on, I would give them the credit.
P.S. I love this sub!

As an outsider in Australia looking in, it's weird what happened. We've also had our own issues the past decade or so with charlatans (-cough- scomo) infiltrating the political class here but in no way would a personality like that orange faced fuckwit ever gain any popularity.
The thing that I feel many yanks don't fully comprehend though, especially those who actually voted for Trump, is the global implications not just for Ukraine and Palestine, but Taiwan, global trade, NATO, climate change etc if he really does make America more isolationist as he has threatened. For example if his idiotic tariffs do get introduced, that will likely slow down China's economy. China is Australia's biggest trade partner and our economy is pretty reliant on our exports to them - so if they get hit, that will flow down to us. If we then get hit, that will have ramifications for the smaller and less developed Oceania nations who rely on us for lots of nation building, development and aid, allowing China to then grow their influence in the region (which they're already doing btw).
And that's just one little dynamic on the other side of the world.

American who lives in Canada. I don't think it's something most people think about, let alone process. Intellectually I recognized this. Living in a different country and being on the other side, I feel it much more differently. I'm kind of apposed to the idea of any one country being a super power to be honest. Any one country should have the ability to completely affect others to the degree we do.
lusid2029@reddit
While this sounds good in theory in many ways, think about what we'd have to accept if we give that up- there are tradeoffs. The last time this was a bipolar world was the Cold War, and we had multipolarity in the lead up to WWI. These were not and did not feel like safe, predictable, stable times geopolitically. Russia and China absolutely WILL step into the spaces we vacate. I'm not saying the system we have is a great one for everybody- we have fucked over more countries than I can count- but we have also been the beneficiaries of the stability our position and role has brought us. But all empires do come to an end (and to be honest ours was embarrassingly short).

My only comment is that it was a big loss for me.
Not ideologically, I have cerebral palsy and am protected under the preexisting conditions clause in the patient bill of rights. Essentially before ACA was past I was constantly battling with my insurance companies because theyd use my cerebral palsy as an excuse to decline coverage for medications and surgeries.
The RNC has attempted to repeal ACA many times but were blocked most famously by McCain.
Theyve committed to continue trying to repeal it and control of the senate its all but guaranteed. The quiet part is that they don't care about ACA. Its the PBOR protections they after due to insurance lobbying.
Now I'm basically on a ticking clock waiting for the repeal to happen and wipe out my protections.
I know for most it seems like some ideology war, but Im literally screwed. I have to start planning for my medical future. Scares the hell out of me because I just had hip surgery. Without the POBR I would have been up shit creek.

I voted 3rd party, however I don't understand why hardcore Democrats are so surprised...while they're sitting over there playing identity politics and calling everyone racist, homophobe etc, the Republicans are talking about inflation and making it so families can comfortably buy groceries again...Now do I think that the Republicans will bring down prices AND keep the economy moving in the right direction, IDK, there's so much rhetoric on both sides it is hard to know but Dems can't keep pissing on the majority of working class non college educated Americans. Just because someone didn't go to college doesn't make them dumb or uneducated, just means they had a career to fall back on (I myself learned IT in the military so no need for college to be successful) or are in the trades usually making more money than the college elites. If you want real change hold politicians accountable of ALL parties. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.
NoAnnual3259@reddit
What are their plans for bringing down prices and inflation? I’ll wait…
notickeynoworky@reddit
Look, I’m independent. I voted Harris because I’m a realist. A 3rd party president isn’t happening. That said, I didn’t love Biden/Harris. My issues were more geopolitical than domestic though. Economically, compared to the rest of the world, the US has done well. I say all of that just to explain my position I’m coming from.
Ok, so here goes - for every claim of racist or homophobe on the left, there was a claim of Marxist or baby killer or “indoctrinating children” on the right. Harris actually talked in far more detail about her economic policy than Trump imo. She listed several things she’d do. Trumps only talk economic solution was tariffs, which most economists say will end up costing Americans more.
None of this matters though as clearly Trump saying that he’s the best and his “concepts of plans” resonated with more Americans. I could go at length about what I feel the issues with the current Democratic Party and the Harris campaign are/were, but “identity politics” vs “economic solutions” isn’t the issue here imo.

Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play in it, for good or evil, before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.’
Frodo: ‘I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.’
Gandalf: ‘So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides that of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring, in which case you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.

I’m trying to remember how panicked we all were when W took office and how economic disaster to one side it wound up being mostly ok. This is a much more dire situation for sure but it’s all I’ve got to cling to right now
tastysharts@reddit
I'm old enough now to have watched the pendulum swing back and forth, back and forth. I know I've been told as we age we become more conservative because conceivably, we have more to lose. I remember Dukakis, Gore, Hillary, I feel like I even remember Carter. I remember the guy who lost because he yelled weird. I remember when The supreme court dude left his pube on a woman's coke can. I remember the endless misogyny, the Reagan years, the punk ERA (I miss this one the most). I remember the anger and good music from the youth. So many great bands, so many great shows. I remember not understanding why my mom was sad about Reagan. I remember everything.

I do kind of want to delete all news apps and Reyes into my bubble.
But i feel so much guilt at the idea. It's so privileged but i also have no clue how to help

May I suggest r/optimistsunite for a better outlook on things than most might have.

I gotta say, after seeing the breakdown of voter demographics I'm pretty pissed- not surprised because some of our cohort have been a certain kinda way even when we were kids; but definitely pissed that more of us didn't stand against them, and show up to make a difference.
I just wanna the cartridge out of the country and blow in it. Maybe smack the globe a few times to see if we can better reception 😥
This supremely sucks though...

I am a centrist who has voted for politicians from both major parties.
Last night, I voted with a hard R.
I don’t like the direction this country has been going, and if we have to rewind things a bit, well, I guess it’s better than the alternative.
arickg@reddit
Wow. I'm surprised. I started reading this post and thought: oh great another fucken sub that is gonna ban current political talk.
Thank you for doing the opposite. I enjoy reading everyone's thoughts regardless of opinion.

I haven't had any spam texts or calls today so I am getting a W there and I'll take it!
WittyAndWeird@reddit
I never got a single political text or phone call. I don’t know how that happened but I was so glad it did!
ElectricSnowBunny@reddit
you are so lucky omg how
...Although according to my downvotes apparently the spam was much loved I guess.
Still_Detail_4285@reddit
My phone only rang twice today. Both times my boss. It was great.
ElectricSnowBunny@reddit
I'm exhausted from it all, to get some peace today was really nice.
duckduckduck21@reddit
Agreed! I'm so done with political advertising and spam. And it would be so good for everyone to step out of their social media algorithm'd echo chambers and recognize the common ground they share.
Our society is a complete shitshow right now. Got to hand it to the elites though - they successfully changed the narrative from us vs them to us vs us.
ElectricSnowBunny@reddit
I firmly believe we have way more in common than we don't, and we're allowing the power and money in this country to split us apart and turn us against each other.
I voted blue. If you voted red, you're still my neighbor and you can still come over when I'm grilling up some BBQ chicken thighs.

I've been reflecting back on the zeitgeist of this country during our run thus far and I can't remember any time when Americans were ever as disengaged from things like they are now. It's just total apathy out there. It reminds me of those scenes in movies when a character realizes they're about to crash or explode and rather than try to save themselves, they just give up and accept it. Think Travolta at the end of Broken Arrow or Tommy Lee Jones at the end of Blown Away.
Sadly, I think Americans as a people have turned a corner that now puts us in a situation not unlike those movie characters. The failure of so many, with much on the line, to show up and save themselves, indicates to me that our collective mindset consists of widespread indifference to the crash and burn we know is coming. All those patriotic speeches and all the fascistic threats didn't move the needle the least little bit. America is just going to fall to its knees and watch it all crash and burn around us.

Today was the first day I ever regretted having children. Not because I don’t love them. I love them dearly. It’s because I don’t believe they will come to age in a kind, just world. And I don’t want them to have children of their own, knowing that it will be even worse for them.
Being a father has been my greatest joy. Until now.

Yeah. Thanks for saying that; it’s a dark thought that I didn’t like admitting to myself. I’m horrified for my daughters. I love them more than anything but I feel so bad for them.

I’m starting to think it’s our generation to blame. We have been getting fucked since ‘99. At this point we’re not even hiding it anymore, let it all burn down. I’ve come to the absolute realization that I hate both parties and what they stand for, which is nothing but echo chambers of fear and hate for their own country and people. Anyway just venting, downvote me upvote me, I don’t care anymore.
OkBaconBurger@reddit
It’s hard to express fully how I feel. Today has just been rough. I am filled with worry. I don’t know what kind of future my kids will have. I wonder if I will even have a job a year from now.
I’ve always enjoyed gardening. I think it’s time to lean into that turn off the tv.

Every time that I wonder if I made the right choice not to have children, my fellow citizens remind me that I did, in fact, make the right choice. My faith in the US was so bad back in August, I scheduled surgery to get my fallopian tubes removed, and I'm very grateful I had the insurance coverage to make that happen. At least I'm not going to be forced to bring life into a dying world.
Fairymask@reddit

I am guilty of allowing myself the luxury of feeling confident we weren't going to elect an openly fascist, convict, cheap con artist of a failed businessman. But, you know eggs and gas cost so more so fuck America. We deserve this. people are going to die. The American economy is going to suffer. We did it to ourselves.
TeutonJon78@reddit
And if anything, eggs costing more is still because of H5N1, which we don't have sort of handle on because the Orange One killed the pandemic preparedness team.
