Audi's Sales Are Flagging Because There's No Reason To Buy One.

As an Audi owner I generally agree. But then again, I don’t think anything new is worth buying anymore. Tech heavy with increasing complexity that will plague affordability in the out years
DepthHour1669@reddit
Audi is BMW minus getting hit with the ugly stick. Or Mercedes without the shit reliability and a few thousand dollars cheaper.
But yeah, not much reason to buy an A4 over a 330i these days.
cloudofevil@reddit
I think one of Audi's issues is they haven't been hit with any stick. New ones look the same as 2014 Audi. Enthusiasts on reddit complain about BMW's new styling but actual buyers of new luxury cars want the latest and greatest not something indistinguishable from the previous generation.
Either-Durian-9488@reddit
Is this a car buisness major thread? Why does everything in terms of enthusiast threads boil down to absolutely what sells the absolute most.
strongmanass@reddit
Bingo
If you want customers to buy the new generation of every car, you'll have a hard time convincing them if it looks just like the car it's replacing.
Joatboy@reddit
Tesla is going to hit this wall soon, especially when there are no real successor models in the known pipeline. The Model S and X are OLD
Realistic_Village184@reddit
The Model 3 looks ancient, even after the recent refresh. The white Model 3 is one of the ugliest cars on the road right now IMO, even though it looked fine when it launched years ago.
SophistXIII@reddit
As an actual (and biased) buyer of a new luxury car, the Audi's "outdated" interior was actually a selling feature (if not a tipping point) over the BMW. And I prefer it to the screen heavy B10.
That said, they do need to update their models across the board to stay competitive with BMW and I could see how other buyers might be turned off by the outdated design.
Loken89@reddit
Thank you! Audi's are nice, but they're so damn bland and boring looking.
10000Didgeridoos@reddit
This is definitely true and is a big benefit of having one: it still looks "new" to other people a decade later. People think my 2015 A3 is a new luxury car because Audis haven't changed much in looks since then. And the really expensive Audis look largely the same as the cheap ones - you just pick which size one you want and how much luxury tech and/or how much power and level of driving dynamics you want.
I bought this car for $19,000 off lease 5 years ago. Even now, people are like OOOOHHHH RICH CAR when the thing is worth about $11,000-13,000.
That isn't why I got it but I don't hate it either.
PhilipWG@reddit
The A4 is dead but go drive a recent one and you’ll understand. It’s the epitome of the German sport sedan.
Either-Durian-9488@reddit
In what world is an Audi generally less reliable than a Mercedes, I would put many of Audis products over the last 30 years up there with Land Rover bad, and this is coming from someone that loves both lmao:
Ok-Improvement-3670@reddit
Audi has lousy weight distribution compared with BMW.
SNRatio@reddit
I came very close to getting an A5 last week. I really like the aesthetics of the car, plus I need a hatchback. I found a pretty good deal on a CPO one with 9k miles ... and then the dealer threw in some obligatory extras to raise the price. While grinding them back down to the advertised price I kept thinking more and more about the extra costs of owning an Audi, and the amount of time my neighbor's Q5 spends in the shop.
I walked out and bought a manual VW GTI a few days later. It will have some of the same headaches, but they'll be cheaper headaches.
Astandsforataxia69@reddit
Mercedes used to be reliable, what the fuck happened?
julienjj@reddit
They became a software company, or so they say 😂😂😂😂
MechMeister@reddit
Counterpoint there's no reason to buy an A4 over an Acura TLX. The German products are only 10% More fun to drive and 90% less reliable in the long term. Any sane consumer will choose the Japanese competitor at marginal loss of driving enjoyment which wanes anyway, once you own a car for long enough.
statmelt@reddit
I'm guessing the A4 is substantially more refined (noise, vibration and harshness) compared to a TLX.
MechMeister@reddit
For maybe 2 or 3 years before all the water leaks start to make the fabric, mold and rattle away at the interior pieces
statmelt@reddit
My 6 year old A5 is solid as a rock. No rattles, no leaks, no mechanical issues.
The_General_321@reddit
If you do the schedule maintenance then you wouldn’t have those problems…..
AFB27@reddit
Oh that's a take right there haha
cakeboss451@reddit
i get what you are saying but the TLX is the worst car in that segment, i think the lexus is/genesis g70 is more of an apt comparison
guy_incognito784@reddit
Hell the next gen A5 (which is really the new A4) just dropped and while I think it looks nice, it looks largely the same.
I feel the only manufacturer who can get away with that consistently is sister company Porsche with the 911.
And while this is a problem for all European manufacturers, the drop in demand in China is killing them as well.
DepthHour1669@reddit
Eh, the 2016 C300 looks pretty similar to a 2025 C300. The 2019 330i looks exactly the same as a 2025 330i.
strongmanass@reddit
I'm pretty tech-forward in what I want from a car, and I generally don't consider Audi because they lag the leaders significantly in technology.
PeterFechter@reddit
What is it missing that its competition is not?
strongmanass@reddit
Mainly hands-free driving. BMW has hands-free driving on mapped highways up to 85 mph. You just have to keep your eye on the road. It's somewhere between Level 2 and 3 autonomous driving - Level 2+ basically. I'm pretty sure Mercedes has the same, plus legal Level 3 driving on some small sections of highway in California and Nevada I think. AFAIK Audi doesn't have hands-free driving at all.
Cars-and-Coffee@reddit
I’m on the flip side. I bought an Audi because it lagged everyone on tech. They offered knobs and buttons when everyone had moved to touch sensitive things.
strongmanass@reddit
That's only part of it. I prefer a less cluttered center console, but that's not really the issue. They're behind BMW and Mercedes in driver assistance and HUD capability (last I checked on HUD).
InformalBee2830@reddit
I'm curious - what exactly is it missing in comparison to BMW/Merc?
strongmanass@reddit
No hands-free driving.
With the HUD I think BMW and Mercedes just have more detailed information in the display. But to be fair, that can be distracting for some people.
Burnt_Prawn@reddit
To be fair, the majority of their lineup is just being overhauled right now. New A5/4, Q5, Q6 e tron. If I had to upgrade tomorrow I’d probably go get a 2019 S5 sportback because I hate the touchscreen but to each their own
strongmanass@reddit
Still no hands-free driving though. That's my biggest issue with new Audis wrt technology.
LCHMD@reddit
lmao
Multifaceted-Simp@reddit
It's really confusing, I hate the tech and BMWs and Mercedes, but yet, Audi and Lexus are starting to feel dated with their interiors. I don't envy automobile CEOs right now.
SuperGT1LE@reddit
There’s nothing new worth buying because it’s all too expensive. Honestly who has the money for this shit anymore?
I was just talking about this because of the election. In 2018 my combined household income is the exact same as I make on my own now in 2024. In that year I had Cherokee trailhawk, Camaro SS 1LE, chevy Cruze, a house and all the bills/insurance that’s goes with it. Today, 0% chance I’m affording all that on the same income. That’s not inflation that’s just straight corporate greed.
Average truck is basically 60k, my 2017 challenger scat pack M6 was 31k out the door in 2023 exact same car 51k out the door. I mean shit the cheapest Civic you can buy today is 29k. You basically can touch nothing for less than 30 on a 84 month 7.2% interest loan.
Stellantis dumbass CEO is scratching his head how his company is doing so bad….ok rant is over
PickledPricklyPenis@reddit
this is why I spent 10k on a 2011 335xi with the msport suspension and 60k miles this past March at auction and never looked back. 380HP/376lb torque and hydraulic steering is fucking bliss
pezman@reddit
i see so many people say “i don’t care about all the tech in cars, i like it and it’s not inconvenient” when others rant they don’t want or need it and we need to stick to analog. what i think a lot of people fail for realize, as you mention, the average cost of a vehicle goes up across the board regardless if it’s a cheap or expensive brand.
tapf111@reddit
Yep I'll buy at least 5 year old used from now on to make sure it's a good year for maintenance.
WatchStoredInAss@reddit

Audi: Keeps styling same for decades and no one buys BMW: Polarizing new styling, hated by fanboys and bought by all
Tbh Audi has the best lights in the business but it’s no RR that needs a timeless look.
hockeyjmac@reddit
Modern BMW aren’t hated by fanboys. They are hated by journalists and Redditors that parrot journalists.
Dakei@reddit
Learned that the hard way when my coworker got himself an E92 340i. He likes the new BMW design language for the M3.
I asked him why.
He said they look cool and aggressive.
I said it looks like the pig from Angry Birds.
He said it looked like a cool Angry Birds pig.
10000Didgeridoos@reddit
Yep it's attracting a different demographic of people with disposable income. Before, it was Euro-philes and gearheads. Now, it's people who don't want restrained and "classy" styling - they want attention grabbing shit like the BMW schnoz grille.
strongmanass@reddit
I've been saying for years now that Dukec-era BMW resonated with the general public and people get angry with me or say something like "nobody will tell you to your face that got car is ugly." They also won't say anything positive unprompted if they think so, yet the Dukec cars consistently get unsolicited compliments.
guy_incognito784@reddit
I was once told that the compliments from strangers in parking lots on my i4 were people who felt sorry for me because that’s a normal thing people do.
strongmanass@reddit
I remember that r/BMW thread. It's like they forget how people behave in real life.
That's the ugliest car I've ever seen in my life. Why tf would anyone buy that? Is he blind...wait blind people can't drive...maybe if I tell him it's cool it'll make him feel better about his life...but should I really reward that decision? Next thing he'll buy a cheetah print shirt and grow a mullet...shit he's coming..."nice car dude!"...damn it! Mrs Dude, I'm sorry for your husband's future mullet.
That whole thing is definitely my thought process when I compliment a car instead of the much simpler and more normal oh that's a cool car..."cool car man!"
essjay2009@reddit
I've got a G80 M3 and you wouldn't believe the amount of positive attention it gets from normal people. I've had other cars that enthusiasts would consider better looking, but none got anywhere near the same attention as the "ugly" M3.
GasManMatt123@reddit
Non car people don't seem to have issues with the G8x. My missus thinks they look good, and comments positively every time a G8x or G2x 4 series with the big grille drives past.
Car people judge cars the hardest with the most amount of bias. The normies have the genuinely objective opinions on cars.
dissss0@reddit
The only 'problem' with the M3 is the front treatment though - it still mostly has the classic 3-series proportions.
The 5 series on the other hand is awkwardly proportioned all around
myredditalt5@reddit
Yep… My G80 M3 in Isle of Man Green gets more attention than my Frost Blackwing and it’s technically less rare. Anyone who goes along with the G80 “ ugly “ narrative simply hasn’t owned one and experienced the public’s reaction.
piff_jar@reddit
E92 340i?
Dakei@reddit
Sorry my bad, got the designations mixed up. It was the E92 non-M coupe, so E92 335i.
Bro was quick to mod it though. Within a month, he threw on some bolt-ons, a down pipe, deleted the twin-turbo setup for a large, single-turbo; got a new ECU and tuned it.
Pr1zzm@reddit
The cope is strong with your coworker, lol.
stav_and_nick@reddit
How is what someone likes cope? I like plenty of things others don’t, I don’t think they’re coping for that lol
Drzhivago138@reddit
If Reddit doesn’t like something, that must mean nobody IRL likes it either, so anyone who claims to like it is “coping”
Dakei@reddit
I could see where he was coming from. The new M3 does have an attractive side profile and the rear does look unabashedly great. I only had an issue with the front fascia.
He actually owns a BMW and does his own mods though. I'm driving around in a Model Y nowadays. What do I know about good looking cars?
Pr1zzm@reddit
Ehh. I think the M3 looks like a boring sedan from the side and rear. The badge is literally the only thing that would make me realize it's not just regular traffic. If viewed from behind. Then again, I'm admittedly a BMW hater so you can take my opinions with a grain of salt. I just think they look more boring/ugly than their competitors and they attract the worst type of people.
Multifaceted-Simp@reddit
Don't be fooled, BMWs are leasing for dirt cheap.
LogicWavelength@reddit
I mean… I have eyes though. I don’t love the M2, but every other ICE M-anything is nice enough looking. The Z4 is sexy. It’s mainly just the big XM and the 7 series that’s god fucking awful looking. I see several 7s in my neighborhood and it’s eye-catchingly ugly in person.
AFB27@reddit
I was at the dealer for service and my mom was giving me a ride (former E53 owner herself, not remotely a car persom) and she said by far the XM and 7 Series were the worst, which I also agree with. Was also not a huge fan of the new X3.
Says the 4 (and M3/4) front ends look strange but she doesn't hate those. Was very interesting to hear that.
guy_incognito784@reddit
Most journalists give most of them positive reviews but may scratch their heads on styling.
Redditors hate them.
BosnianBreakfast@reddit
The irony here is you clearly don't browse any car forum other than reddit. You wouldn't have missed the meltdowns of actual "fanboys" on bimmerforums for the new models the past few years.

W
willnxt@reddit
More like hated by traditionalists no?
DepthHour1669@reddit
I think the issue is that Audi reliability is too good since the crappy 2010ish era, so there’s less incentive to upgrade to the newest model if it looks the same.
n00bmax@reddit
Adding to insult top trim VW are often better equipped and cheaper than base trim Audi. I am a big fan of Jetta GLI but won’t touch A4 with a 10ft pole. I don’t even get it how they sell a FWD biased car as a competition to RWD biased BMW and Mercedes. I see it more as Acura or Lexus alternative. Even Mazda and Genesis have gone longitudinal engine RWD based.
ProPencilPusher@reddit
Audi, and by extension GTI & R fans are very loyal. They just don’t care about RWD vs. FWD chassis dynamics and they like what they like. There’s also a whole lot of marketing and rally lore driving perception that Quattro Ultra is some magical engineering marvel still, when really it’s the same as 4matic and xdrive in reverse.
Probably not applicable on new cars but most of them I know are into the tuning scene. It’s cheaper and easier to make big power vs. BMW’s 4cyl cars.
n00bmax@reddit
Nobody should tell them about tunability of a B58 motor. A diesel blocked Supra approved engine vs the stressed out 2.0L
ProPencilPusher@reddit
I think they know. There’s far more people tuning B58s than the V6 VAG offerings.
Let’s not shit too hard on the B48, Toyota approved it for the Supra too. You can still get 300hp stage 1 style tunes out of it if you want. People just… don’t because BMW resale makes the 6cyls a heck of a bargain.
DepthHour1669@reddit
The A4 has a longitudinal engine, it’s on the MLB Evo platform. Which is shared with the Q5/A6/A8/Urus/Cayenne.
n00bmax@reddit
Yes and it sits in front of the wheels messing up the weight distribution and the base is still FWD
DepthHour1669@reddit
Yeah, but literally nobody who buys entry level sedans care about stuff like weight distribution lol. I guarantee you the A4 can have a 50:50 weight distribution and it wouldn’t affect sales at all.
Independent-Win-4187@reddit
The whole reason I wanted a BMW is because it looks polarizing
n00bmax@reddit
Exactly! That’s the point for most ppl spending that kind of money. They want the world to take a note.
biggestbroever@reddit
What did MB do
CoachZed@reddit
Years of awful, awful build quality. Now with tacky build quality and unappealing powertrains.
Spicywolff@reddit
They killed the golden goose v8 and doubled down on an i4 with the complexity and weight of an S class. Yet still charge MSRP of 100k with them gathering cobwebs on the lot….
MB is definitely not the flag bearer of manufactured sanity or health.
trackdaybruh@reddit
They didn't kill the V8, you just gotta buy the more expensive model if you want the V8 noise. They're upselling it
Spicywolff@reddit
Cle53 begs to differ.
n00bmax@reddit
The best modern Merc. I adore it as BMW owner and aspire to buy a convertible one once they drop in $$
Spicywolff@reddit
You like the new cle54? That’s certainly a take. I’d never bit it myself. Too damn heavy, no current v8 option, way to expensive vs rivals. Of which offer far better interior QC
n00bmax@reddit
I wanted M440i convertible + a boring SUV as my ideal garage. The CLE53 seems better than M440i in many ways. I was recently eyeing a 2000s SL500 as perfect V8 Merc but gave up after insurance quotes which are abysmal in Southern ON.
Spicywolff@reddit
That’s super funny, cause I like the m440i lol. I think BMW has better i6 while MB does way better v8.
n00bmax@reddit
Yes! I love B58 on my X3 M40i and won’t part ways. I love the old NA V8 and Merc but didn’t want the maintenance concerns on my first luxury car.
For the CLE53 I’m amused by fun features like sending all power to the back and doing burnouts, something that needs a full M car on BMW side. In hindsight I rarely launch my car and am too considerately stingy to do any burnouts.
Spicywolff@reddit
At 700$ a pair or rear tires, I never burn out lol. I’d rather ride up rubber at auto cross. I get wanting the earlier car owner experience. At someooont dumping $! At the shop will get old lol
trackdaybruh@reddit
Not expensive enough.
Think the more expensive V8 AMG models (AMG GT, SL, etc.)
Spicywolff@reddit
205 c63 came with m177 v8 and base price of 70k
biggestbroever@reddit
Who is the flag bearer
Spicywolff@reddit
At this rate BMW and Porsche have been king of the German brands. Audi and MB are absolutely slipping.
biggestbroever@reddit
I'm personally not a fan of the modern BMW. Porsche is definitely the flag bearer of something, but I wouldn't call it the luxury flag bearer
Spicywolff@reddit
BMW is showing what a healthier car business should look like, Porsche is doing very well too. The 911 I’ve been in definitely has luxury.
strongmanass@reddit
Give everything the same exterior and interior styling. Change materials or something about the manufacturing process resulting in creaky interiors. Give the cars soporific driving character.
RiftHunter4@reddit
This is something I don't understand from all of the VW Group Products. They haven't done any major restyling in the last 10-20 years. For Porsche, I get it. They have a strong 911-based design language, but Audi and VW don't look new to me because I've been staring at the same corporate face for SO LONG.
n00bmax@reddit
The diesel gate exposed their vicious greed and perhaps this low design philosophy is just a cost cutting measure. You can’t expect unreliable cars to hold value just because they look current.
trackdaybruh@reddit
I remember the designers were like "We want Audi design to be an evolution of the previous model and not a revolution"
Meanwhile the the new model design releases tends to feel stagnant pretty quickly to me because it basically feels like it's a Facelift+.
stav_and_nick@reddit
Which made the reaction on /r/audi to the new designs hilarious. It honestly looks exactly the same exterior wise and they hated it
n00bmax@reddit
Audi’s mid-cycle model changes lack differentiation compared to BMW and Mercedes. The LCI X3 G01 stands out from its predecessor, especially the tail lights, despite minimal mechanical and interior changes.
This differentiation attracts the lease crowd, which accounts for most 6-figure car deals.
madwolfa@reddit
The only saving grace for BMW these days is sublime drivetrain and better than average reliability...

DookieMcDookface@reddit
Audi used to be ahead of the curve on design inside and out. Their cars were just handsome and well proportioned, and didn’t look like anything else back then in their segment. Back when I was a teen in the late 90s, early 2000s I loved the looks of the A4, A6, A8, TT, R8… not mention the S and RS variants.
They stopped pushing the limits and the competitors have caught up. Not only that even non-premium brands like Toyota, KIA, Hyundai, Mazda make more stylish cars than Audi and with way better value per dollar. What’s sad is that I can easily afford an Audi now at my stage in life and owning an Audi sounds so unappealing. I don’t want a bland sedan or crossover. I know the 19 year old version of me would slap me upside the head.
rolex_monkey_50@reddit
Audi's are great cars but they have essentially used the same engines and gearboxes since 2008. The styling has barely changed while the world has moved on, they used to be at the cutting edge but got lazy.
Chineseunicorn@reddit
The 3.0 turbo is quite solid.
c0d33@reddit
Although I love my B9.5 S5 I couldn’t help but notice some cost-cutting measures that have no place in a $70k+ car so I agree with the sentiment. And I’ve made peace with the fact I’ve probably already lost ~$25k to the depreciation, I’ll just drive it until the wheels fall off and move on to other brands.
Santa_Hates_You@reddit
The depreciation on modern S cars is nuts. RS3 and R8 are the only ones that don’t seem to rapidly depreciate.

Used to be a big fan of the brand especially during the era when the A7 first came out and they also had awesome cars like the B8 RS5, TT RS, and ofc the R8. Really hate to see what they’ve been doing design wise recently
strongmanass@reddit
It's interesting you say that about the design because IMO Audi design never changes with respect to the zeitgeist. It's always middle of the road to just slightly attractive. If you want to know what design trends are like from a given period just grab any random Audi and it's a good bellwether.
bauhausy@reddit
Audi’s present lineup was just too old since they got hit with never-endings delays with CARIAD and the PPE/PPC/SSP conundrum. Now that’s fixed and the new cars are arriving quickly (Q6 in 11/23, A5 in 06/24, A6 in 07/24, Q5 in 09/24, and a new combustion Q3 and A7 in 2025) sales should probably recover

I'm a big Audi fan and pretty happy with both my Audis but I am not really digging of the new design language. I think the C8 A7 is a slight downgrade in design vs the C7/7.5 and the only new Audi that looks better than my S7 is the etron GT, but that's got its own set of issues.
So I'm probably gonna keep my S7 for many more years and just rotate out the EV on 3 year leases. The Q4 is fine, blends in well, and I got a great rate on the lease. But I don't feel as inclined to stay with Audi once the lease ends as I did before. Hopefully by then they'll have more competitive models, but if not, I'm ready to try something new.

I love my S4, but once my lease is up I am going to either get an M3 Comp X-Drive or an E53 AMG, depending on how I feel after driving them. Since I am not going to race it and just want a street car, I may go with the MB because I am getting older and the extra comfort sounds nice,

Hasn’t Audis problem always been jack of all trades master of none? They make decent looking cars but there has always been good reasons to buy their competitors over them.

For the longest time their primary issue was that the entire engine was located in front of the front axle. Tough to go up against the 50/50 3-series with 60%+ of your weight on the front axle.
007meow@reddit
Ok but how many people ACTUALLY care about that?
The average Q5 and Q7 buyer, their bread and butter, have no idea what any of that even means.
bigloser42@reddit
There are a not small quantity of people who are buying a 3-series for its handling. Same with the X3, 5-series, and X5, and 2 series. They may not understand the reason why the BMWs handle better, but they are able to tell the BMW handles better.
impulsivetech@reddit
Kind a like Lexus, but better and with the German downside.
slide2k@reddit
That is the exact reason I like them. I have one car, so if it gets anywhere between a 6,5 to an 8,5 on everything I am good

Damn I bet the author spent at least 25 minutes writing that 'article' lol.

"ChatGPT, write a vague article about why no one buys Audi, because there's no reason to buy one."

Audi dealer around the corner from our city (San Antonio, TX) has a ton of inventory. I don’t see how they can continue to sit on that many cars.
g-4-ces@reddit
Maybe it’s not just Audi but a broader affordability issue due to interest rates?

Logic is not welcome here!

Audi 5 just got refreshed after way too long on the market and the new one looks just a bit too similar to the old one. And has less body styles.
And the SUVs all feel like they have been around forever too.
