Why not election day on a holiday?

In my country (Spain) election day is always on Sunday because more people can attend whitout having to leave work and they generally have more free time on the weekend.
Has this ever been a debate in the US?

Many of us can leave work early or come in late to vote on Election Day, or vote early. We voted several days ago.
