How to get to/from remote restaurants & enjoy a drink?

Have posted this all over, no answer yet! Our last trip to Scotland was the first time we rented a car. We were warned that drunk driving laws are draconian - basically, you can't drink AT ALL and drive. But how to you get to/from and enjoy remote restaurants? We stayed in Portree on Skye and had reservationa at a Michelin* in Waternish, 40" away. We barely managed to get the one cab the area seemed to have available! Buses stopped running too early. Had this problem in Oban area, too. What to do?

Do you really need to drink?. If you can't go for a meal without drinking alcohol, you may have an issue

I think that's harsh.
If I go for a meal at a michelin starred place, which is what OP is talking about, then I think it is going to taste better with suitable wine, and I also think that exploring what is on the wine list might be a significant attraction of the experience.
If it's any old meal out, I'm happy with a soft drink or a non-alcoholic beer for sure.

Would counter this with if I was going to a Michelin starred restaurant which is situated somewhere not blessed with a plethora of public transport options, I'd probably plan well I'd advance.

Lol, "Draconian" to not control a 2 ton metal box with delayed reactions, suuure. Definitely not Draconian to say "hey, it'll be fiiine I'm sure it hasn't affected me that much yet"

So you did manage to get the one cab available. Book way further in advance next time and it’ll be fine.

40 minutes or 40 inches? If latter, you’ll be fine on foot.
Club together and book your taxi well in advance to make sure it’s available
Club together for a room nearby
One of you drives and doesn’t drink
Those are your options, really.

You just have to take it turns to drink, one of you drinks and the other drives.

or don't go to Scotland.

One of you doesn’t drink?

But but but what if I want a pint of cider or three and they want a bottle of wine. What should I do? Can I force a change of law in Scotland?

Honestly the questions on here sometimes 😂

If I can’t easily walk, train or get a taxi to it, I’m probably not going to go unless it’s a seriously good restaurant. If it is that good, I’ll book a night over somewhere that I can walk/train/taxi to it.
