Does upgrading my R5 3600 to a R7 5700X3D make sense with the current state of tech?

Currently gaming on a fairly budget rig that I built \~4 years ago. CPU is a R5 3600, GPU is a RTX 2060, 32GB RAM, and a B450 Tomahawk MAX MOBO.
The system has really started to show its age/budget constraints, I am struggling to get 60FPS in a lot of the games I find myself playing (SQUAD, Star Citizen, etc). While the system was built around not having a CPU/GPU bottleneck, it seems recently a lot of newer games are a LOT more CPU intensive than GPU intensive.
I have not been keeping up with how computer technology has been advancing recently. I know the gold standard of CPU architecture has changed so I will eventually need to switch my MOBO. Can I squeeze a few more decent years out of MOBO with a new CPU?

Do a price comparison of the 5700x3d upgrade, vs going am5 and selling your am4 gear.

Yes

I currently have a 3700X and a 3080Ti and I’ve considered doing the same because it’s one of the only meaningful upgrades I can do without a complete system upgrade. Personally in your position I’d do it, but you may see more of a performance improvement from upgrading your GPU over your CPU depending on the game.

Did the same upgrade recently and it was a very nice refresh to the build. Definitely recommend

5700x3d should be relatively cheap way to extend your pcs life by few years.
u might want some newer gpu as well.

Major upgrade from 3600

Why would you suggest OP pair their board with RAM speed it doesn't support?
Special_Baseball4845@reddit
Supports up to 4000 MHz RAM

Obviously the OPs responsibility to verify the RAM will work. It's only a suggestion. I don't work for MSI and I don't have perfect knowledge of the exact specs for every motherboard.
Random_Sime@reddit
My understanding was that the board supports RAM up to 2667 MHz (that can be boosted to 4133 MHz)

Memory controller is on the CPU

Yes. B450 Tomahawk was one of the better B450s too. Update your bios and send it

Best way to look at it, is that the 5700x3D pushes off the upgrade by another 2.5 years. Which isn't bad for <200.

Yes, you can probably skip am5.
I went from a 3600 to a 5700x3d a couple of months back. Upgrade cost my about $100 Canadian. I then went and bought a 6750xt to replace my rx580. That upgrade cost me about 375 Canadian. The only other thing I needed was thermal paste for 6 bucks. It makes sense if you can get a good deal and re-sell your old parts. Performance has been wonderful.

Yes especially because by buying an AM4 motherboard in the past, you’ve opened this option up for yourself now. It’s what you were meant to do.

It's not the fastest CPU available, but it can give you a good 30-50% improvement in performance over the 3600 in CPU bound scenarios. You need to factor in that it will cost you less than $200, whereas an 9800X3D would cost you $450 just for the CPU, plust new mobo and new memory.
