I accidentally deleted windows
So as many new Linux user I have a second SSD with Linux on but I often reinstalled the distro I been experimenting with Linux and I often joked to myself that one day I will accidentally will delete everything on my c drive (where Windows on) today it happened I wanted to reinstalled endveros because I had a problem I couldn't solve so thought why not start fresh yeah I didn't select the right drive lucky I had all my file backup and I can always play Sims on the PS4 I don't why but i kind find it funny that I accidentally deleted it but if I ever really need window I don't know why I can just use my old laptop or find a another way just thought it would be fun tell it here I don't think my parents are going to find it so funny but it's laptop so yeah
Hot_Dragonfruit4039@reddit
The only scenario where windows is needed is for BIOS upgrade.
FilipoPoland@reddit
How? I have never used knowingly Windows to update my BIOS.
The only way I have ever done it was by slapping the new BIOS on a USB from the manufacturer of my motherboard and going into BIOS settings and updating it there.
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
It would be weird if I could only update my laptop with windows and I'm really not going to spend 200 euro on a bad operating system
FirefighterOld2230@reddit
Just reinstall windows again and endure the torture of the never ending "were nearly finished setting up your pc" and "Almost there"... I swear the shithousery on that installer is next gen!
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
But do I not need to pay again ?
Sorry for the late response I went to sleep
FilipoPoland@reddit
No, the key somehow manages to get to the deepest storages of my computer. At this point I am convinced that it is stored along with my BIOS settings.
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
Good to know thx for letting me know then I can install my windows on my other SSD put that SSD away and take it when I need it
FilipoPoland@reddit
OK I did a browser search. Your hardware is fingerprinted by Microsoft and that hardware is used to verify that there was a windows key activated on the computer.
Monoplex@reddit
All your files are exactly where you left them.
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
? The installer deleted everything and formatted it for my distro , everything Is gone ?
Monoplex@reddit
"All your files are exactly where you left them." is one of the stupid things windows says while it's installing updates.
Remember that with backups 2 is 1 and 1 is none.
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
Okeeee?
Fast-Top-5071@reddit
That's a big oooops. But, if you ever need windows, run it in a VM under linux. It's easy. Look into it now in case your parents start asking questions.
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
My mom will just role with her eyes and maybe I'm going to need to explain to her what Linux / gnu is because she going to confused how my laptop stil works and probably going to say pull your plan
And my dad sometimes uses the browser on my laptop
And this summer we also used HDMI I guess that won't work anymore next summer e there is still video card
FilipoPoland@reddit
Why would the HDMI not work? Has Microsoft taken it as compensation for not being able to spy?
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
I heard HDMI isn't supported on Linux because they don't pay for the license
https://youtu.be/YJNcejhHtpo?si=HXEThXe3gpskguLc
FilipoPoland@reddit
You are kidding right? If that is the case then I am clearly using friendship cables.
My main PC uses a HDMI cable to feed video in to one od my monitors and I have recently plugged my laptop in to some random projector at school and it worked as well.
peacelovememes@reddit
Do you kinda find it sad?
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
No honestly at first I was shocked at what did i do i ruined my laptop and then I thought it not bad I have USB stick that flashed with Linux the only thing that I did on Windows that Linux doesn't support is sims and I have a PS4 and I started launching because the very first moment when I started with Linux I thought I'm going to make a backup because I thought this would happen haahaha and linux is so much better and funner then windows so plus i still have a old laptop with windows :)
Furdiburd10@reddit
what "sims" are you playing? The way games 3 or 4?
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
The 4 if I really want to play it on my laptop I'm just going to make time for trying to run it but when I first tried I failed
Furdiburd10@reddit
Hmmm... yeah, that game should just work with the newest proton (if you can get past the ea app) https://www.protondb.com/app/1222670
Whatever, I have the same with mafia 3.ย
Play games however you like :)
FilipoPoland@reddit
I can confirm this. I have gotten the game to run for my gf on my arch install by just using proton. Assuming that the game ran on Windows I would imagine that the specs od the laptop in question are good enough.
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
Not saying I have good specs but it ran fine on windows if I lowered the settings a bit
Sorry for the late response I went to sleep
FilipoPoland@reddit
So I assumed correct. No need to be sorry.
I would suggest going to Steam/settings/compatibility and enabling the settings there, I can not remember the exact name.
Then I would attempt to boot the game from Steam as is and if that fails I would attempt changing the compatibility setting for the game with a different proton version. As for the proton versions per game you can find them under game properties/compatibility.
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
A oke thx for letting me know going to look into it
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
Thx for letting me know will look into it

Sims 4 runs quie well (like all the Otter Sims games)
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
Sorry I don't know what that means
Sorry for the late response I went to sleep
Cats7204@reddit
I play sims 4 on linux regularly! You don't need windows for that. If you have it on steam just setup proton, if you have it elsewhere install it via lutris.
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
I have it on steam going to look into it to get it working

I was duel booting for years though I barely touched windows. SSD died with no backup and decided it wasnt worth the hassel to install windows
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
Hope you had a backup of your files
Fantastic_Goal3197@reddit
Nope, nothing too important though. Mostly just my configs and having to redownload all my games since it was primarily for that
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
:)
Fire0pal@reddit
duel booting is what happens when a windows update messes up dual boot
an4s_911@reddit
Canโt agree more
runesbroken@reddit
Isn't this only possible if the OSs are on different drives?
No-Satisfaction9594@reddit
You should try dual booting. It's less violent and less hassle.

The point is it has all been deleted with windows

My whole SSD is deleted and then formatted to have my Linux distro to run I don't think it can be saved

I had a borked 'infinite 2 hour Windows update loop' a few years ago, powered off whilst quite literally voicing F**K YOU and installed Linux. No tears shed!
crossinggirl200@reddit (OP)
Years ago when I thought Windows en Mac os where the only operating system my laptop needed to update and that update took a whole work day to update I thought my laptop broke haha I wished I knew early what Linux is that it really isn't that scary as the internet makes it out it would be so Handy on that old thing
arkanux@reddit
I always leave the windows partitions there in laptops, just in case, and yesterday I needed extra space and realized I had not booted into windows in like 7 years and finally deleted them

In a moment of inadvertence, I inadvertently deleted Windows, which I find rather amusing.
As a new Linux user, I have a secondary SSD with Linux installed. However, I frequently reinstall the Linux distribution I am experimenting with. I often jokingly remarked that one day I would accidentally delete everything on my C: drive (where Windows is installed). Today, that day arrived. I had encountered an issue that I was unable to resolve, so I decided to reinstall Windows. In my haste, I did not select the correct drive. Fortunately, I had all my files backed up, and I could always play Sims on my PS4. I am uncertain why I made that mistake, but I find it rather humorous that I accidentally deleted Windows. If I ever truly require Windows, I can simply use my old laptop or find another way. I thought it would be entertaining to share this experience here. I do not believe my parents will find it particularly amusing, as it is a laptop.

Windows took all your punctuation with it.

I want to include them but the mods removed my post because I used special character so I just deleted everything that wasn't a letter or a space

?????
easbarba@reddit
It's wise to separate data in exclusive partition and system in others to avoid it haha
sausix@reddit
Then you wipe your important data by accident and not Windows. That's even worse.
easbarba@reddit
Define accident, I can't even phantom conjure it to a logic, to be fair.
bitman2049@reddit
I did this when I was first starting out. I was pretty bummed about it. Lost a lot of music and saved games when it happens. It's a mixed blessing to know that I now have the skills that would have been able to save it, but you live and you learn.
ultrasquid9@reddit
I accidentally uninstalled Windows while messing around with ZorinOS, and that was what started my own enjoyment of Linux.
