I initially felt this was a wild take, but the more I think about it the more its growing on me. I realize I've been way too fixated on everything my broken country is doing (right or wrong) and have little-to-no information about the other global superpowers. I'm going to do a little research of my own now, but any chance you can shed light on whether they're even in a position (or motivated) to do that?
Nastyfaction@reddit
Anarcho/libertarian-capitalism as an ideology is something that's uniquely American/Anglo. The kind of stuff Musk is advocating for is something I don't think would gain traction in other countries, especially China with a very long history of bureaucracy which was responsible for their civilization being prominent in the first place.

Americans are heavily propagandized, and without basic social services like other nations, are left to fend for ourselves and barely get by. Instead of uniting in solidarity with POC and struggling for a better world for all, people have chosen to let racism, hate, ignorance and fascism blind them to their own immiseration and enslavement. Ultimately yeah. We’re past being able to stop it. But is anyone honestly surprised? Our politicians aren’t representative of our population…or so we thought. Turns out we’re largely bought and paid forever same as the suits. I talk to my skeptical friends and the discussion always always ends the same. They get quiet, look away, and say “yeah, well, depends who’s science you trust and at the end of the day, I gotta eat, man (ie go along to get along).”
And I can’t push against that. It’s a fight for survival either way and denial is surviving today where acceptance is survival overall. We live today and that’s what’s important to the deniers.

I see that it is once again time to remind partisans, apologists, and deniers in this subreddit that they should not blame leftists, immigrants, young folks, disengaged folks, migrants, or whatever outgroup. Place the blame solely on the party that was supposed to run Joe as a one-timer in the name of stability before ponying up a progressive leader. Instead they spent four years jerking off fossil fuel companies. By laser focusing your attention of identity politics - intersectionality without critical analysis esp class struggle - they accomplish ghoulish feats such as drastically expanding fossil fuel extraction and juicing the military industrial complex. No, the democrats aren't better or even less bad with respect to the environment.
Somehow, absurdly, this timeline has produced a political party that denies climate change, but through their own ineptitude is less accomplished at greasing the wheels of business. On the other hand, the party that softly acknowledges climate change has produced outcomes that are significantly, horrifically, catastrophically worse for the environment. Biden's presidency saw massive fossil fuel expansion despite his explicit promise not to. Harris promised to continue that and expand fracking. Please read below links carefully and ask yourself what job you're going to do in very near future economy: soldier or field laborer
2020
Aug 6 - While campaigning for the presidency, Joe Biden promises to ban the expansion of fossil fuel exploitation on federal lands as part of his $1.7 trillion climate plan labeled ‘Green New Deal’ This plan will commit money towards renewable infrastructure development and tax incentives for individuals and industry while establishing governmental agencies tasked with battling climate change.

berrschkob@reddit
This would have a shred of credibility if you actually compared Biden with Trump instead of just trashing Biden.
06210311200805012006@reddit
You're free to go ahead and do it.
Go on. Lift a finger. I dare you.
berrschkob@reddit
I'm not the one attempting to make an extremely detailed argument Biden was worse than Trump while completely excluding Trump.
That would be you. And it's a 100% fail absent an accounting of Trump's record. Not just a fail but absolutely reasonably suspect to be partisan.
06210311200805012006@reddit
Look man, I remember you from one of the previous times I posted this. I recall that you are focused on the fact that I made a comparative statement in the beginning part of my post. I think you should really consider that Biden's actions materially harmed our world and were the very specific thing that he campaigned on not doing. Given the results of this election, I would further say that you should feel strongly motivated to perform a little healthy introspection at this time.
Good luck.
Pink_Revolutionary@reddit
I do thank you for that lengthy post, it's good either way to demonstrate the harm the Dems are doing, but like. . .
Maybe you've never taken any scientific or philosophical course, but it's basically necessary to show the other side of a comparative argument if you want to be taken seriously and not get called out for being a partisan hack.
As it stands, thank you for the info, now please produce a similar rundown of the harm of Trump's first term, then return the second draft for review.
06210311200805012006@reddit

To be fair Kamala didn't do an extensive campaign towards climate action either. I watched both her rally speech and her hour long Oprah talk and climate change wasn't mentioned. So the democrats failed to bring anything to debate, they practically gave the election on a plate to the worst lunatic ever. I'm infuriated.
cursedfan@reddit
All anyone would have heard was “price of gas will go even higher with Kamala” I wish it weren’t so but don’t kid urself on this one.
chaseinger@reddit
to be faaaaaaair (iykyk)
donnie says it's a chinese hoax. kamala doesn't have a lot of ideas or anything in the oven, but at least the dems acknowledge actoss board that it's a reality.
differences. not that it matters much now.
lutavsc@reddit
Of course. I didn't mean to imply there isn't a difference, but how inefficient was the democrats approach.
Saying the democrats acknowledge it exists means barely anything, considering their strategy was pretending it doesn't exist. You'd have to research or previously know their opinions to know they consider it a real threat. Meanwhile, it should've always been on their mouths...
Anyways, the typical attitude of trying to get conservatives to vote for them was the doom of this candidacy since day 1. Having a terrible opponent is not enough to win an election if you're don't have agenda. They should've strongly pushed worker's rights, climate justice, middle east peace, women's rights etc. Instead it was a little bit of progressive ads here and there and a lot of praising the GOP and getting the worst conservative people to support them. Just lousy.
They basically opened the white house's doors for the devil and said "come come, you can become dictator now, sweetie."
Frosti11icus@reddit
I mean, Biden's signature legislation is a climate bill that has the larger investment in green energy in human history...
HikmetLeGuin@reddit
And it still wasn't enough. I also doubt that it was more robust than what China is doing (which also isn't enough, but is more impressive than a lot of Western countries).
And Biden also provided tons of support for fossil fuel infrastructure, which undercut a lot of the potential good.
Still, I will agree that there was at least more opportunity under Biden for green energy and carbon regulations than under Trump. The Republicans are more vicious in destroying the planet. They seem to relish it.
lutavsc@reddit
I meant during their campaign*** didn't make that obvious in my comment.
"You'd have to research or previously know their opinions to know they consider it a real threat. Meanwhile, it should've always been on their mouths..."
chaseinger@reddit
i'm on board with the sentiment that nothing (especially nothing actually proposed) is enough, but it sure sounds like you're letting the perfect get in the way of the good a bit.
at this point i shall hysterically cling to every straw offered. it's five past twelve and 47 is going to be catastrophic. i'd have gladly taken kamala's lip service.
HommeMusical@reddit
I'm sorry, but "vaguely admitting that there's a climate crisis while not doing anything" is bad, not good.
Yes, it's less bad than the Republicans. Not a high bar.
lutavsc@reddit
Trump got less votes than in 2020. It wasn't a win of fascism and denial, it was a loss for the democrats. Their lousy campaign and their try to please conservatives cost us the future of our planet. Because they weren't humble enough to push the narrative further to the left and the progress.
It's what we say in the activism: conceding to the right here and there makes the world more and more fascist. When the right is in control they don't concede to the left. They had the machine in their hands and wasted it.
It is what it is. 4 years ago it seemed impossible Trump would win. Unpopular politics after unpopular politics, wars and the worst candidate campaign ever in history led us here.
Their first mistake was launching a candidate with strong ties to the very unpopular Joe Biden, who has a warmongerer fame. Maybe if it was someone without ties to him they had a better chance...
HikmetLeGuin@reddit
The establishment Dems acknowledge that something called "climate change" exists. They don't acknowledge the actual reality of it, but they pay lip service to the general concept. In a way, that is a form of denial, too.
If they aren't going to take sufficient action to actually stop the climate disaster, then their pitiful half measures are nearly useless.
But I recognize that they are better in some ways that Trump. Whether they are better enough to actually make a difference for our collapsing ecosystems, I have my doubts. I still understand the reasoning behind voting "lesser evil," but I'm skeptical about the end results.
But maybe Harris would have at least given Americans better conditions within which to conduct the struggle. Trump will likely crack down more aggressively on environmentalists. Maybe that'll radicalize some people, at least. If there's a silver lining, perhaps this will be a wake up call. But many people seem happy to bury their heads in the sand, so we'll see.
Hey_Look_80085@reddit
They know it's a lost cause.
zuppa_de_tortellini@reddit
Yeah no surprise that democrats chose an absolute shitty candidate as always.
gmuslera@reddit
Trump is a plain denier. But on the other side we didn’t see a lot of positive activity in that arena neither, even with promises of doing something and caring about it. Specially in the last period, with undeniable (Trump or not) increasingly negative effects.
Electing the less bad of two similarly bad options would not have been a big improvement, at least in this particular topic.
jessimckenzi@reddit (OP)
Right, for sure, it wasn't considered an issue that the electorate cared about, even if everything was on the line. And, to be fair to the Harris campaign, they were probably right about that! But then they couldn't counter with something the electorate COULD care about, like addressing their very real concerns and fears around cost of living crisis and a bad economy. And now here we are!
CarpeValde@reddit
It seems like accelerationism is the path laid before us.
Nervous-Month-4287@reddit
Truthfully the Democrats did this to themselves I can never understand why this party continues to act surprised. With the exception of Obama can you name one presidential candidate the Democrats picked that didn’t make you cringe? Reasons Harris Lost:
Democrats choose the wrong candidate and it shows as Harris also lot the National Vote.
If you truly are a democrat you should be beyond pissed they didn’t give you an opportunity for a primary vote.
As for me; I’ll remain independent party lines are supposed to be broken on both sides.
Pink_Revolutionary@reddit
Okay I agree with all of this except point 2, anything about the border and immigration are made up concerns for racist conservatives to galvanize their base around. That Dems are starting to play into that shit just means the country as a whole is getting more racist and xenophobic, not that there's real merit behind it.
Nervous-Month-4287@reddit
We all have our rights to our opinions. Personally my wife and her family is all Latino and I live in a border state. My wife went through the legal process to immigrate to USA and later become a citizen. Unfortunately there is a huge uptick in the illegal border crossings from people and work classes that are not from Mexico but from all over the world. This has as a result wrecked infrastructure of our city while the Border Patrol has no real mandates…sure there are millions spent on checkpoints but what good are they if you wave everyone through? Or if you catch and release? It seems like a complete waste of money and a grossly ineffective inefficiency. Regardless the laws do not support either catch or release. Additionally what is the point to actually immigrate legally if you can live here indefinitely illegally? What is the vetting process? Why did illegal immigration increase so much between trump and Biden?
Sure I could move to another area further away from the border (I have before) but my family has lived here since the 40s … my wife’s family lives here… I have a really good job here too … is it too much of an ask for my government to reduce illegal immigration, secure border and stop drug trafficking. In the past two years I have been in multiple areas where an officer & drug trafficker has had an involved shooting. One of which I had to act like a human shield for my family. Note that this has never happened before to me and I grew up here.
Canada, UK, EU, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China all have stricter border policies than the United States at this point.
rainydays052020@reddit
Honestly isn’t that most politicians on the national level these days though? Who would have been a good choice with a track record to match? The boomers in charge have been gatekeeping so hard that nobody under 50 is even able to compete.
Nervous-Month-4287@reddit
That is a good question…considering there wasn’t a primary to flesh out the younger politicians and build them up I compiled a list of folks with reasons why they might be qualified. Remember you want moderates who can win in swing states as your national presidential candidate. Also they don’t have to be a politician per say … they can also come from private industry:
Joe Manchin - member of the Democratic Party and has been in office since 2010. Manchin previously served as the Governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010. He is known for his centrist positions and often plays a key role in bipartisan negotiations in the Senate.
Kyrsten Lea Sinema - member of the U.S. Senate, representing Arizona. Initially elected to Congress as a Democrat, she switched her affiliation to Independent in 2022, though she caucuses with the Democrats. Known for her moderate stance and bipartisan approach, Sinema has focused on issues like healthcare, veterans’ benefits, and immigration reform. She was the first openly bisexual person elected to the U.S. Senate.
Joshua Shapiro - served as the 50th Governor of Pennsylvania since January 2023. Before his governorship, he held various positions, including serving as the Pennsylvania Attorney General from 2017 to 2023. He is a member of the Democratic Party and has focused on issues such as public safety, environmental protection, and education reform.
Michelle Obama - American attorney and author who served as the first lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017, being married to Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States.
Jared Schutz Polis - an American politician and businessman who has served as the 43rd Governor of Colorado since January 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, Polis was the first openly gay person elected as governor in the United States. Prior to his governorship, he served as a U.S. Representative for Colorado’s 2nd congressional district from 2009 to 2019. Polis has a strong background in entrepreneurship and technology and has focused on various issues during his time in office, including education reform, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and economic development. He is known for advocating policies that support renewable energy.
Gretchen Whitmer - American lawyer and politician serving since 2019 as the 49th governor of Michigan. A member of the Democratic Party, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and in the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015.
Oprah Winfrey - Democratic political donar if running for office her platform might emphasize her well-known interests in social justice, education, and mental health. Given her long-standing advocacy work, she would likely focus on policies supporting poverty alleviation, healthcare access, educational reform, and mental health initiatives. Oprah’s approach would probably incorporate her storytelling skills and ability to connect with diverse audiences, helping her address complex issues with a relatable, people-centered perspective.
There are a number of former Generals, Ambassadors, Senators, and Entrepreneurs the democratic primary could review as well. These are some of the more populous names that come to mind today. Remember popular today doesn’t mean popular tomorrow.

What's the difference between thinking climate change is a hoax and believing climate change is real but refusing to do anything about it?
WebDevWarrior@reddit
The one who thinks its real might not actively spend money trying to make it better but will likely avoid introducing things to prevent it getting worse. The one who thinks its a hoax won't give a shit if their actions will improve things, do nothing, or lead to a billion deaths, as long as there is money, they will take it. Especially if you're an individual who has made a name for himself playing it fast and loose with the rules, and willing to endanger others and / or do anything for some free cash (or avoid paying others).
That sufficiently answer your question?
Brizoot@reddit
No, because the people who think it's real have been introducing thing to make it worse.

For the record, your point is correct. Per analysis before the election by Carbon Brief, a Trump presidency is likely to increase the amount of US emissions by 4 billion metric tons by 2030, threatening the stability of the climate and increasing the risk of climate and ecological/environmental collapse. Per Bill McKibben (quoted in the article): “My guess is that we’ll be able to read last night’s election results in the geological record many millennia hence.”

I can't disagree more strongly. One was limping on, having already been shot to pieces, and the other is saying "shoot me again, and again, and again"
Significant_Draw_162@reddit
Oh FFS…
Dying is dying. The system and reality humans have collectively created is the problem. We can not incrementally change the structure of this killing machine.
jessimckenzi@reddit (OP)
Really can't stress my belief that things can be Bad and they can be A Whole Lot Worse and that there is a vast gulf between them. But, I understand the sentiment, even if I don't agree with it.
Significant_Draw_162@reddit
You’re entirely right that things can be bad or worse…but why is it so hard to believe that they can be better or not so bad?
In the truest irony I say that as someone who is as bearish and full of doom as it comes if asked about the “system”.

At least three will get the job done. With the corporate Dems, we'd all just bleed out a little slower.
Pootle001@reddit
There is virtually no difference between Rep and Dem on climate issues. Both are BAU.

I'm in nyc and it's 72° on an early November evening. Waking around in a t-shirt and shorts. I'm actually kind of enjoying this global warming thing.

Some Americans, especially those who want change, tend to put a band-aid over deeper issues such as electing Harris. The status quo needs a complete overhaul and a lot of hard work, starting at the community level. But once again, the problem is that those who say they want change often stay comfortably on their sofas.

I’m no better than anyone else but sitting online dwelling on this shit isn’t going to make your lives any easier either. You can either focus to enact change in your daily lives, organize, or keep doom posting into your anxieties. Perhaps if we worked just as hard or harder than the opposition, maybe we’d make progress.

It's not just him as a denier. His whole gang of resource rapists will actively dismantle any and all environmental controls. We (the whole world) are fucked.

Republicans: Control Supreme Court, White House, House of Representatives, and Senate.
Also Republicans, the next time things go wrong: "It's the fault of Democrats!"

Speedrunning into the next Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, the irony of anti-immigration absolutists having to migrate to the Arctic under that scenario is appropriate.
But for real, a hothouse trajectory is inevitable if we follow a worst case emissions scenario. But at the pace we're moving and the amount of time it takes for the climate to reach an equilibrium with the atmosphere, it'll be totally unsustainable. Hot and humid conditions in Greenland but several thousands of years too early for flora and fauna to adapt and evolve. Even Michael Mann made a Fermi Paradox reference on Twitter earlier, really says a lot.

The following submission statement was provided by /u/jessimckenzi:
Per analysis before the election by Carbon Brief, a Trump presidency is likely to increase the amount of US emissions by 4 billion metric tons by 2030, threatening the stability of the climate and increasing the risk of climate and ecological/environmental collapse. Per Bill McKibben (quoted in the article): “My guess is that we’ll be able to read last night’s election results in the geological record many millennia hence.”
