Catalina 30 companionway hatch replacement
Posted by Akushin@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 8 comments
So on my c30 I have a sliding companionway hatch with washboards and I’d like to replace the sliding part with a hatch that hinges up and down. Does anyone have a guide on how to do this or any guidance on how this might get accomplished?
Thanks!

I’d be curious about how much reinforcement the hatch will require. Our first boat was a Catalina 30 and that sliding hatch is monstrous. We had issues with friction and were advised to buy Teflon strips from a woodworking store, the kind you apply to table saw fences. They worked amazingly and the hatch slid much more easily.
It might be easier to fabricate a new hatch with foam and glass than to modify the existing.

You might have to research how Catalina did the pop top on the 22 and 25's and try and replicate it.

That’s actually a really great idea and I should have thought of it! Thank you

I think they did the pop top on the smaller boat because its difficult to have a dodger with a lower boom. On a bigger boat I prefer the dodger with a fly you can attach to dodger and bimini. Jmo

I was thinking less of a pop top and more like a standard hatch with hinges on one side and something to prop it up from the bottom

It can be done you just have to get creative. Still you don't want rain to get in .

Now that I’m thinking about it the boom might be too low for that. I’m going to have to take measurements again haha
