The 8/2 split sleeper berth is a work schedule that allows truck drivers to extend their shifts by splitting their required 10-hour off-duty break into two parts:
First shift: Drive up to six hours Second shift: Take a two-hour off-duty break Third shift: Drive another five hours
The 8/2 split allows drivers to comply with federal regulations that limit the number of hours they can spend on the road. Drivers can use this schedule to rest and recover while still being able to complete deliveries on time.
The split sleeper berth rule was introduced by the FMCSA and gives drivers more flexibility. As of September 29, 2020, drivers can also take a 7/3 split, where the longer break is at least seven hours in the sleeper berth and the short break is at least two hours off-duty or in the sleeper berth.
Neither of the rest periods count toward the 14- or 70-hour clock. However, drivers should be aware of how many hours they are on duty on seven or eight consecutive days. They can restart a seven or eight consecutive day period after taking at least 34 consecutive hours off duty

Can you explain how the time I gain back is calculated ?
Gladauk@reddit
With the 8/2 or 7/3 the time you use between breaks is removed from the next day. Think of it like a cash advance Getting more today that needs paid back.
For example if my 2 hr break ends and noon and I drive until 1700 and do an 8, then tomorrow I will start with 9 hours left on my 14.
Although if you use a 2 and do a full 10 it will reset your clock.

Makes sense. Thank you.

Wish I could but I can’t because I’ve never used the 8/2 split. We only use sleeper for our 10s.

I use the split to pause my clock all the time but rarely do I actually take a 7 or 8 hour break.
