As soon as climate migration picks up speed authoritarianism is coming for everyone. Would be nice if we didn’t have our foot pressed to the gas pedal tho.
Right. In the mid-term future (a few decades) I plan to be mobile, if necessary to move further north and to a small community of people with similar values, isolated by not too isolated, with a decent growing season and access to robust water supplies, near but not on the ocean. And then prepare to defend it.
ok... if you get concrete ideas post them please. Maybe the world should split in two / several parts according to "political" lines/walls again. Dystopia in the making, in fact already here.
There aren’t many. I have a unique technical skillset, and partner companies all over the world, so if it comes to it, I might be able to swing it with an employment sponsor.
Yep, that's what we've been doing. I'm a dual citizen (French, so we can access the whole Euro-zone) and my partner is a South Korean citizen with a green card in the US.
Dual-citizenship is a blessing. I'm Canadian and I don't have a degree, so getting citizenship elsewhere would be a challenge. And we Canadians are too far from God and too close to America.
Submission Statement: This article explores the erosion of liberal democracy as part of a larger, global trend toward authoritarianism, reflecting a broader civilizational shift that challenges the viability of democratic governance worldwide. It suggests that the decline of Western democratic values mirrors systemic fractures across societies, hinting at a global reordering rather than a solely national crisis.

If I was American, I'd be actively researching what countries will let me in and gain citizenship.
And I'm not sure that Canada is far enough away.
hectorxander@reddit
Canada does not let many in. You cannot just move there.
MarcusXL@reddit
Actually it's a controversy here in Canada just how many people we let in, and how easily our immigration system can be gamed.
hectorxander@reddit
Yeah I think the wealthy can buy in somehow.
But they have like quotas for countries too I think.
Significant_Draw_162@reddit
I don’t think Canada or Europe will fare any better…

I like your username by the way.

have any concrete ideas about those communities, where can one find them?
MarcusXL@reddit
No concrete ideas. I'm from Vancouver, British Columbia, so there are a number of communities north of here that might fit the bill.

Thing about BC though is 1) wildfires 2) flooding and landslides
MarcusXL@reddit
Right. But nowhere is safe. In fact BC was suggested by many as a "safe" place before the 2021 Heat Dome. Pick your poison.

I'd *much* rather be in Canada than the US for the next four years.
But, honestly, yeah we didn't just fuck this up for us we fucked it up for everyone so.
Significant_Draw_162@reddit
The founding fathers of the US feared democracy. Plato feared democracy saying :
“Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery out of the most extreme liberty.”
Maybe we’re having the wrong conversation.

Plato said democracy ends in dictatorship…
