Joshua is old, or mabye better said tired and near death. The lands God promised his people are inhabited by others. The numbers have grown. In Abrahams time after his journey from ur of chaldeans the land is fairly empty. Now a great number inhabit it. The 12 tribes have also grown. Thought Joshua is old, the Lord has promised a place for each tribe. He hands out land deeds. He tells them, you will go here, and you will go here. Joshua is old, God hasn't aged a day. He has guided his people as a pillar of fire. He has freed them from bondage. Now on the eve of everything he has promised, the pillars of the family nation are old. The leadership will die soon. They may not be able to do it. The tribes are exposed. Vulnerable. Yet here is God, declaring I can do it when he is old. I can do it when he is dead. I can do it without him.
