Is the 2tb 990 pro worth it?

Right now the 2TB 990 has a seemingly wicked deal on Amazon right now, however I don't know if I can justify the price of it, and I don't know if the price would drop even further. Im using an extension called Keepa to check up on the prices of stuff on Amazon since I'm making a new build, and my friend pointed out this sale to me. So I look at it, and Keepa tells me that last Nov it dropped to 119. Im just wondering if its worth to wait and see if the price dips further, or just to bite the bullet and possibly buy it now, since my PC doesn't exactly NEED extra storage, but I could definitely put it to good use

Honestly, last year was a fluke in SSD pricing due to oversupply from Covid. Pricing was so good I managed to snag a 4TB Crucial P3 for $159 around the summer when prices bottomed out. There may be a further price drop for BF but I doubt it's gonna be much lower. Since you don't need it as you say, you can wait and see if said drop happens though honestly a 990 Pro is kind of a waste as secondary storage.

I would actually disagree with this, my logic being that the workloads that do benefit from faster drives would also benefit from that drive being left as empty as possible and not utilized for other workloads. Having a fast and empty secondary/scratch drive would be more beneficial to those users than using that drive as their boot drive.
superrob1500@reddit
Well absolutely, I guess I'm projecting on OP since my second drive is mostly for games or other light workloads in which case it would be a waste.

I dunno, for games you can benefit from faster loading times, depending on where your bottleneck is for that particular game.
If you loading screens annoy you and you have the money, eh, it's a good use-case. I'm planning on hunting the November sales for just this reason; I want a secondary drive to stuff games onto.

You'd be really really hard pressed to find any actual difference in leading times between NVME vs even SATA SSD drives, let alone between NVME drives. Game loading is just not sequential so those theoretically higher speeds don't really reflect here.
Eventually if more games support features like direct storage it make more of a difference but what I've seen, even in current direct storage supported games like Horizon FW it's still single digit seconds at best.

Me too mate, and I absolutely agree with that.

Ah okay, i see. I kinda figured thats why the price had dropped so low, but I honestly was banking on the off chance samsung was just nice for Christmastime :(
superrob1500@reddit
I get that but like one of the other commenters said, depending on what you intend to use the drive for, there may be other more better priced options that would still be fine for said use case.

planning on it being left to video game storage, it was a very quick look at since my friend literally just started bugging me on it around 20m ago, and I saw the sale. i thought he finally had a good idea for once, and tried to give him the chance. I leave most of my video footage and lesser important stuff on a smaller 1TB SATA, which I may have to empty soon

Well for basic storage I can personally vouch for the aforementioned P3 from Crucial but there's other even entry level options from WD like their blue series or even Samsung's 980 that would be perfectly adequate for this use.
You can use this chart as reference. It comes from /r/NewMaxx/.

Go 4tb. 2 is min these days
existing_egg_of_2001@reddit (OP)
Wish I could but 4TB is too far from my budget
Academic-Business-45@reddit
I went teamgroup mp44 for 229. . 5 year warranty

GTA Online Enaced on da way!

I am also wondering whether or not the 119 bf deal from last year will come again. I am just about to build a new system and wanted to get this for my OS.
-UserRemoved-@reddit
Do you have sequential workloads? Do you benefit from niche levels of throughput? What even is your workload?
I mean, it doesn't make much sense for most people to spend more on drive specs if they don't use said drive specs, regardless of a sale.

Thats fair enough, i just had a personal like towards the 900s series and Samsung in general, as all of their drives that I've gotten have lasted years (a 500gb SATA SSD is going 7 years strong). as to answer your questions: no, probably not, and honestly just gaming and video editing

Their previous reputation was certainly earned (source: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/most-reliable-pc-hardware-of-2021-2279/), but IMO Samsung has fumbled that in more recent years (source: https://www.pugetsystems.com/support/guides/critical-samsung-ssd-firmware-update/).

i do remember hearing that, as my current M.2 is a 980 pro. definitely shit a couple bricks, but been preforming fine so far (fingers crossed)
RedLimes@reddit
Instead of crossing your fingers and hoping, download Samsung Magician and check/update the firmware.
Afterwards, disable it in task scheduler, it hides itself there as a startup task.
ShrapnelShock@reddit
Hey 990 pro is indeed having a sick deal now. It's grab it just because it's THE best consumer SSD today.
I thought I got a steal at $170 open box but they're $149 new now for 2tb.
CoffeeCakeLoL@reddit
"Worth it" for the marginal benefit in performance? No - you can get drives for about 2/3 of the price that perform similarly for almost all practical use scenarios. But if you want one of the absolute best drives and peace of mind go for it.
existing_egg_of_2001@reddit (OP)
gotchu, in your opinion, what other 2tb m.2 would you purchase, if not this one?
RedLimes@reddit
MSI M480 Pro or Teamgroup MP44. Both are $120 for TLC w/DRAM.
If you only need a game drive and not an OS drive then I'd get a Silicon Power UD90
beirch@reddit
Teamgroup MP44L, Intel 670p, Lexar NM 710, Silicon Power UD90, Crucial P3, WD Blue SN580, WD Black SN 770 are all great alternatives.
PM-Your-Fuzzy-Socks@reddit
ud90 is qlc now, wouldn’t buy
beirch@reddit
Well that sucks

It mostly depends on sales though.

If you live inside synthetic benchmarks, then sure

Hey man, just asking because I personally favorited Samsung storage drives before.
