How long did it take you to get a job this year?
Posted by GothBanana5000@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 71 comments
I’m currently looking for a new job as I’m aiming to relocate and also progress in my career as my current role has 0 progression potential. I’m finding it ridiculously difficult and have sent over 150 applications to get 4 interviews and miss out every time.
I’m finding it hard to remain positive and keep going. I just want to give up and quit my career and do something else I care less about so the rejection doesn’t hurt as much.
Has anyone found a job this year? Could you tell me how long it took? I keep seeing negative stories and I would like to read some happy ones so I can stay positive and keep applying. If anyone has any words of wisdom on persevering within this current job market, that would be great too.
P.S. For context, I work in marketing

I can not find a first job and I will soon be hanging myself
Automatic_Fun8929@reddit
Was offered a new job in October after starting looking in March/April time.
Had 1 interview in July but withdrew as it wasn't to my liking, then 2 in October which I accepted one of them.
Very very quiet overall though... Lots of recruiters contacting me but most had nothing to offer.
TwigletSG@reddit
Left an old Job in January of this year as there was like you zero progression within it and started another job then till August this year and was made redundant from that one. Was unemployed for 3 months and managed to get a new job 2 weeks ago! So there is hope as I’m also in the marketing/design world! So keep going op!
haikoup@reddit
Marketing is a dwindling industry. Sorry.
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
I was just wondering if you have a profile in LinkenIn? You can put key words for your skill sets which can off set your previous job titles not explaining what you can actually do.
I regularly have to delete emails from recruitment agencies so...
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
LinkedIn seems like my life at the minute, I message every hiring manager that posts a job and connect with them like some irritating salesperson. But maybe that’s what’s holding me back!
I find that applying on the company’s website gets better results. I’ve not had any luck with LinkedIn but I keep trying in case it works out one day.
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
Sorry to hear that. I think my field is pretty niche so I've never had this issue. Think a friend's wife took 2 years to get a job as a primary school teacher though as had to live in certain area as friend is specialist surgeon. She just couldn't get a break.
elgrn1@reddit
I've been looking since September last year.

Similar to me then - we’ve got this - it will happen soon

(Going back to last summer)
A silly amount of time. I must have spent at least 6 weeks applying for jobs every day, I think I landed 2 interviews.
Reached the point where I weren’t reading the rejection emails anymore. I’d see the word ‘unfortunately’ and instantly delete it.
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
The rejections are gutting aren’t they? At least I’m trying to consider it “character building” (but I still consider giving up every time they happen)
EuroManson@reddit
Yeah the rejections are getting to me. Thought I'd escaped as I had a second interview with a company last week, said they would get back to me within a day, didn't hear, sent an email, called, sent another email on Monday and finally got my rejection. It's tough, good luck friend!
PM_ME_VAPORWAVE@reddit
Year and a half, still looking
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
Similar to me - I really hope you find something soon

At 6 months already, the job market here is so fucked I’ve been applying to jobs in bloody France
decentlyfair@reddit
I started looking in February, told loads of recruiters to fuck off with the silly salaries (context we are talking high salaries as education sector is shit paying) had 2 interviews, one I didn’t get but wouldn’t have taken. Second one I interviewed for I got and I love it. Having said all that the experience and qualifications I have are rarer than hen’s teeth and most decent folks in my sector wouldn’t work for some of the silly amounts offered in job ads so you see the same jobs for the same companies month after month.
elsiehxo@reddit
Let me preface this by saying I do already have a full-time job but it's not what I want to be doing.. Been applying since March, applied for over 40 jobs, had two interviews and got neither of those positions. Positive feedback from both though, so I'm hopeful that at some point soon I'll spot a job ad that I think I'll actually find fun and am qualified for :(
budapest_budapest@reddit
I started looking in April and got a job in August. I was getting interviews for about 80% of the jobs I applied for but kept getting pipped at interview because someone else had better experience.
This was for £20-25k admin, receptionist etc roles. Not a glamorous or highly desirable field, but at the same time not requiring many qualifications or much experience so probably got a lot of applicants.
betty163@reddit
3 months, 60 applications, 13 screening calls, 8 first interviews, a few second interviews, 2 job offers.
I was out of work so had a lot of time for applications
HummerDriver6000@reddit
I got made redundant on the last day of July and started my new one a month ago. As slimy of an industry as it can be, I'd recommend going to a recruiter, all 4 of my interviews came from them, and two ended with job offers
Almanis46@reddit
I've been made redundant twice this year, ouch. The first time, in Feb, I found a job in a couple of weeks. Turned out to be godawful and the worst employer I could have imagined. I was almost grateful when they were bought out and I was made redundant with 0 payout. This was July. Took me until late September to find a role, although I was more selective.
I must have applied to 200+ jobs to get 10 interviews and a few offers.
Keep buggering on, and make sure you're receiving all of the benefits you're entitled to.
Best of luck! I hope you find something that exceeds your expectations. It sounds like you deserve it!
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
Ouch indeed - I’m terrified of being made redundant and I can’t imagine it happening twice. I’m sorry that happened to you. Glad you managed to get a better role in the end even if you had to work for someone awful for a minute.
Thank you!
Almanis46@reddit
I was too, until it happened. We all find a way to persevere. When we can't, the state is there to help. Inefficient and insufficient it may be. But it keeps the lights on.
My new role is unimaginably better. Yours will be too!
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
Yeah I suppose it could happen at any time - might as well make peace with it and know it’s not the end of the world. Thank you for this!
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
Redundancy after you've been there over 10 years hits differently...the payout helps!
AmphibianNo8598@reddit
I’m just looking for shop or fast food stuff and I’ve had four interviews in the seven months I’ve been looking. I’m in employment support and cbt but like… don’t really want to keep living.
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
You’ve got this. Things could change tomorrow and you need to be around to see it. I know I’m in a different situation but I promise things always change. Don’t give up.

Breakwaterbot@reddit
I was out of work in May. Spruced up the CV and fired it off to various recruiters. Went to several interviews and got to pick the job I wanted
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
This is legit what I thought would happen when I happily sent off my first job application this year and the excitement soon faded haha
glasgowgeg@reddit
When did you get the job though? That's what OP is asking.
Breakwaterbot@reddit
Oh, I got that the week after. Been there since.
CrispyFriedOwl@reddit
7 months. Got interviews for about 6 or 7 but kept being pipped to the post until I finally got the one I'm in now.
Good luck, it's hard work to find work.
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
All 4 of the jobs I’ve been interviewed and rejected for were due to internal hires, so it’s frustrating but not the worst thing in the world. Thanks so much for sharing - this is really helpful
CrispyFriedOwl@reddit
It's really horrible because although it was great to get really positive feedback, there was nothing that I did wrong. It was either someone was further in the process so got offered or someone just had a bit more experience- all things I couldn't do anything about!
Eventually, something will come through but in the meantime try to do other things so it's not just solely scrolling through job listing's every day. I did some online training related to the industry and eventually went travelling for a month because sod it- I had all the time to actually go for the first time in adulthood!
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
Yeah it’s definitely out of my control most of the time and that’s something I need to remember. I keep telling myself in the most positive way that I’m not special - i.e. I’m not spectacularly bad and no one is singling me out. It’s just how it goes when there’s so many applicants to choose from.
I’m thinking of starting up a little side project so I have something to develop and gain satisfaction from while this drags on. Maybe it’ll take off and I can forget about finding a 9-5 😂
Enough-Ad3818@reddit
Just for a view from the other side, I had a job out this year, and received 149 applicants. It took a week to shortlist them all, and so many had used AI to write the application for them, it was almost laughable. Easily over 100 were almost identical.
It took a very long time to sift, but eventually, we had probably 20 candidates that met all our criteria, so then we had to sift by experience, and then by length of experience in similar roles etc.
In the end, we offered interviews to 12. 8 withdrew as soon as they realised we wouldn't sponsor a visa, so we offered to the next highest scoring candidates. A load more withdrew when they were invited to a face to face interview (the AI applications meant we wanted to actually meet people, as opposed to doing it remotely where people could potentially use AI resources to help them in the interview).
I think we offered 29-30 interviews in the end, to get 12 acceptances, and even then, 5 didn't show up and then ghosted us. It didn't bother me really, as we employed two great people and they're doing really well, but it was definitely a difficult recruitment process.
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
This is really interesting as I do hear this fairly often. Funnily enough I do marketing for recruitment and work with consultants who get ghosted by candidates daily (albeit a different sector where candidates are more in demand). It’s so strange!
Makes it more frustrating that I spend quite a lot of time on each application, personalise my CV to the role and have even made videos practically singing and dancing for some roles and never heard back, knowing that some roles get a lot of AI applications. Makes me feel like I’m on some kind of blacklist! 😂 But again I guess it’s the specific roles I’m applying for. If I think they look great then I’m sure 5000 other people do too…

Last time I got made redundant (early 2023) it took 6ish months and I had plenty of recruiters reach out to me with relevant roles, and I progressed quite far in the interviews. It was still a slog, and I signed up to a temping agency, and ended up working only 1 day before I suddenly got 3 offers. None of them were quite what I had done before, but still good jobs/companies.
I got made redundant again in July and started looking for jobs in September. I've been applying to a lot more than before, and have barely got to/past the first stage interview. I can't believe how bad it is. I can't see myself getting a job any time soon in my rough field with the way things are looking. But I don't quite have the exact experience for a lot of jobs, so it's looking likely I'll have to go back to the entry level role I was in 5 years ago...
Popular-Reply-3051@reddit
Oh and suppose I should answer the question. Made redundant following company buy out after being there 10 years and through two mergers. Literally was approached by an old work colleague who was able to hold a new better paid job for me until I was formally made redundant (also managed to get out of old job before redundancy notice period was over without losing any of the payout).
So yeah nil gap between jobs, minus gap.
But had friends from old company waiting 2-4 weeks for new job.
However I'm a pensions administrator with (now) 18 years experience in a fairly niche field so probably not really fair to compare. 🤷🏻♀️
I am very lucky to have never had many gaps in employment and have only had 10 job interviews in my life and I'd say 5 of them were part time job roles before uni....
cdca@reddit
Been looking all year and not a peep. I've never spend more than one month looking for a job before, always got employers fighting over me and a pay increase.
Now, not even a reply to applications for jobs with a 10-15% pay cut, never mind an interview. Never seen a job market like it. Absolutely mad.
rawcane@reddit
Same. Don't understand how this isn't a recession. Seems way worse than previous ones.
pajamakitten@reddit
Sounds like when I was looking for a job back in 2017. I got loads of interviews but competition was fierce and I was always missing out to more qualified candidates.
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
I feel quite grateful to have never had this experience either. I keep reminding myself that this is so common for many people in different situations regardless of the job market. It really does suck though - I’m not applying for anything I’m underqualified. I’m pretty underpaid at the minute so not asking for much either!

Got told my contract wasn't being extended on a Friday, had an interview on Tuesday, and job offer on Thursday
mikeossy80@reddit
Just over a month.
I work in senior sales so no idea how that equates to your sector.
About 25 applications. 5 final stage interviews 2 offers.
I've nearly doubled my income by doing what you are looking to do.
Keep at it. If you can try and learn from your interview the more you do the better you will be at them.
I would recommend you send an email to the hirer the day after thanking them for their time, tell them you enjoyed the interview and your interest in the role.
Good luck 👍

I finished a job on Friday and started a new one today which I assumed was normal but by reading this I guess it’s not as easy as that which I’m suprised by
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
Think it depends on the sector - marketing and anything similar seems to be more difficult than others!
Educational_Sea_4149@reddit
hm yeah possibly, mines at a nuclear power plant with many many jobs in our area so depends on area too.

3 days of job hunting on the 3rd I got a spontaneous interview for my current job and a second one on the Monday (4 days later). my first full working day was the Wednesday
Yes I was knocking on doors asking. and on to agency's too
cbaotl@reddit
Took me around 6 months, and 3 months of intense searching, to find a job that at least matched my current salary (which isn’t anything special in the first place).
I believe the main issue is the use of recruiters who don’t even look at your CV unless you literally share the job title of what they’re recruiter for. Whereas actual employers can recognise the skill set they’re looking for through other roles.
GothBanana5000@reddit (OP)
I’d love to know why recruiters are fully ghosting so many candidates recently - the rejection is almost understandable but the ghosting is another thing entirely. Its a real shame that so many talented people are getting overlooked because of their job title
cbaotl@reddit
I think with recruiters they really don’t want overqualified people as you’re unlikely to stay in the role long term and they often get a bonus if the person they pick stays for x amount of time.
But mostly they have an easy job - there are tons of people applying for very few jobs. They can ghost us because as long as they fill the role with someone that’s all that matters

December 22nd - February 13th, but those couple of weeks over Christmas were a write-off since everywhere was closed/everyone was off. So maybe 6 weeks?

About 3 days. I’m a construction subcontractor so I got laid off on a Sunday, got a text Wednesday from a guy I met through work with a job offer and lined it up so I could take a week off in between.
I really feel for people who are stuck in the job market right now, I’d be pretty fucked if I suddenly couldn’t do my job anymore.
