Humans - "Yeah... But were also pretty good at making shit. We made you, the tech to get to you (theoretically), the camera we filmed the show with... Art. Medicine. Fucking toilets... So yeah... Your not wrong. But your not right."
I'd ask for an example of any lifeforms on our planet that isn't savage or cruel to any degree. If he manages to come up with one, I'd ask if that species had any history of cruelty or savagery as they evolved. Then I'd ask him "What's your point given that cruelty and savagery is an essential part of life in itself". Hell even the Q have proven to be 'cruel and savage' given that hey had all out war when one chose to finally put an end to their existence.
He’s right but we also have beauty in our view of the universe. We have art and philosophy and music and all kinds of unique things that are valuable. No, their best weapon is all the branches of congress they control, combined with trump's new shiny immunity. So, no apathy is not really close to their best weapon.
I have tried to type a vaguely optimistic reply to this like 3-4 times now, and tbh I'm struggling. I think Good and Evil™ are mostly imagined concepts, but I do think there are truly people that fit those definitions, but most slide on a scale that hovers around "generally wants to do good." The problem is that we're products of our environment (I'm sure there is more than a few Trek eps that highlight this) and the environment his voter's come from is just wildly different than ours, even when they're your neighbor.
This country definitely has some massive problems with misogyny and racism, and that certainly plays a role here, but the larger problem is ignorance. This is part of what makes our environment different; I'm guessing those reading this are more curious, natural learners, so even though we came through largely the same environment that they did, we overcome it's obvious drawbacks because, uh, we can read? Seriously. I don't remember the exact stat, but it's something like more than 50% of Americans that don't read above a third grade level. That doesn't make me hate them or think they're evil, it makes me sad for them. Even the racists and the bigots, that's a sign of ignorance and environment. It's why you hear stories over and over again about how people grew up in that environment shared those feelings until they move to a town/city and actually interact with people who are different than them. Turns out, we're all just people and mostly want the same things.
The people I hate and think are Evil™ are the relatively small number near the top that know exactly what they're doing and are keeping it this way.
If you think that "good" and "evil" are imagined concepts, then I guess you don't mind if someone invades your home, takes everything you own, and then kills and rapes your family. Because "evil" is just a silly, imagined idea. People who say this sort of thing make me wonder: Are you simply trying to excuse away your own sociopathic desires? I thought this sub was about Star Trek, which happens to be--unfortunately, just a show--about humanity at its social peak of altruism. No money, no poverty, no racism... if one is ever confused about what is right or wrong, you could always ask yourself the simple question: "Would I want this to happen to me, or someone I care about?" And if "evil" does not exist, then I guess we should stop arresting people (well, most people) for things like rape and murder.
Ignorance is a reason for a lot of bad behavior, sure. But does ignorance excuse a lack of conscience? A lack of common sense? A lack of empathy and compassion? I guess it comes down to ignorance vs. malicious intent. The latter is often confused with the former.
I think you should go back and read the words I wrote and reply to that comment rather than whatever you imagined I said. I am not going to respond to the vast majority of your comment because frankly you're making some massive leaps away from what I said, but I will focus on this part:
But does ignorance excuse a lack of conscience? A lack of common sense? A lack of empathy and compassion?
Nowhere in my comment did I imply this was excusable behavior. What I am getting is that if you start thinking of 70m people as "evil" you justify horrific outcomes. Evil is irredeemable. It's how they get to language like "vermin" and calling for extermination. If we keep that thinking, we are no better than they.
I guess it comes down to ignorance vs. malicious intent. The latter is often confused with the former.
I'd argue if I steal a loaf of bread to feed my starving family when left without any other choice, that's not evil. If I did it however just to throw the bread away because I wanted to harm the baker because I like hurting people, that's pretty different. The act is the same, but the intent changes it significantly. Either is a problem for society, but how you approach solving it if your intention is to actually solve the root problem and not simply to punish blindly is going to vary significantly.
until it gets offered an upgrade....then its seeyah later
people sell each other out for so little that every relationship can be monetized and there are plenty of parents who would step in front of their children....mine would and they are well off and have no need, but desire for profit is all consuming
insisting real love exists is sad and childish....people are not capable of being more than transactional
If you think someone loves you they just haven't been offered enough to sell you yet or you are just not worth anything to a third party (that was me I thought)
shit
I know my parents hate me because they told me it was my fault they had to get married
sure I'm jaded, and abused, but I lived through that and learned
I once thought it did. I loved a woman so much, she was the first thing on my mind the moment I woke up every day. And she was the last thing on my mind before I lost consciousness to sleep every night. She told me I was the love of all her lives, that I was everything to her, I was her life. And then... without saying a word, she left, ghosted me, and I never heard from her again. Love seems real, when you have it. But it can disappear without a warning, at any moment, and for no apparent reason. How can it be real if it's so... fickle, unreliable? But that is romantic love, right. The other types of love, love for pets, love for your kids, etc. That seems real, at least.
Good people do exist, the problem is that the only things that matter in life are luck and money. The people with those things are predominantly evil and buy positions of power, so evil runs things and good gets overshadowed.
People are a mix of good and evil. The best leaders pull out the best in us, the worst bring out the worst.
The rise of social media (like other forms of mass communication in the past) has made it really really difficult for positive messages to cut through.
I’m not saying I know how to fix that, but writing off the whole of humanity is not it.
I was in graduate school when my mom died. TNG got me through some difficult times. I tried contacting churches and on my first Reddit account, I asked for help and got ignored.
TNG helped me process and ultimately see a therapist. Also, I got to write a paper on wearable tech in Star Trek for an academic conference and I included info in my dissertation about wearable potential uses citing a few TNG episodes.
Star Trek is always my biggest hope. And while I’m not a tattoo person, if I ever got one, Star Trek is the only thing I’d want.
Story-wise, I think it holds up a little too well...
Season 1 is slower, but important world building. Things that seem like throw away details for flavor can have huge importance later.
Seasons 2 - 4 are the meat of the story.
Season 5 suffers from some behind the scenes issues. The pacing is a bit off as a result. And one particular story line is rather disliked by the fandom. (Byron.) But there's good stuff in there, too.
I like to think of season 1 as prologue, 2 - 4 as the main story, and 5 as epilogue. And all together it makes an amazing story.
On the other hand, if you are asking if it holds up visually... It's a very 90's show. Especially in the first season or two. And it looks it. I still think it looks good, but your milage may vary. If you understand things as a product of their time, or if you're in it for the story, you'll be fine.
I seem to remember hearing that it was originally supposed to be 5 seasons, they thought they were getting canceled so slammed everything into 4, then got approved for the 5th after they had used up all their ideas. So 5 was a scrambling for ideas that didn't work out. I remember not liking it as much but still liking the end.
Remind me is it all continual or is it more episodic like TNG? I remember some of the beats of the main story but I don't remember a lot of details. (Except I just randomly remembered the Centari have six.....appendages....why do I remember THAT?)
Not all of the Season 5 ideas, but a good chunk of it ended up in season 4. Thus season 5 feels a lot more drawn out. And yes, Babylon 5 is a much more serialized show. One of the first such on television outside of soap operas.
Humanity’s inherent human nature is to hate and kill over the smallest of differences. If there really is something like the Continuum out there, I hope they do the right thing and wipe us out
He's right. However, there are the standout individuals that take time to do self-reflection and truly care about others that aren't like themselves. That's the whole dream of Star Trek and why I love it. That just as people can, that humanity can grow. We're not there yet, but there are bright spots that show humanity's potential
..well...we do say that abortion is murder while eating things that were once alive...pigs, cows, birds, on and on...so humans are kind of silly anyway
Humanity, in general, has a lack of understanding for other people who are different and aren't harming society. And there are just way too many Karen's. I wish I felt optimistic today as I usually am. But I've got so much laundry to do for Christ sake.
Not today, Q. Right now I'm inclined to let the entire thing burn to the ground and let humanity be an interesting fossil to find for whatever intelligent species comes after us.
Cruel and Savage. I'm not going to argue that with you. But the mind that is also cool also has the capacity for art, romance and love. I would argue that as cruel and Savage as the human race is, We are equally compassionate. Empathetic and kind. The pendulum that swings both ways between cruel and loving. You can't snuff one out without the other.
Every race is cruel and savage. Its what allowed us to climb from the middle of a food chain to the having dominion over our planet.
Are the Klingons any better? Do you think the Vulcans were any different in their past?
The Q have been gods for so long they have forgotten their ancestors would have fought in the mud for scraps of food.
They had permission to grow, back when the galaxy was empty and devoid of judgement and now they wish to sever the ladders they climbed
We can defend ourselves by appealing to their reason, and their hope, but in the end, the language that Q understood immediately was a right hook to a jaw.
Humans deserve the right to grow into a peaceful civilization, and we will burn the galaxy to a cinder to defend it
Name one species on Earth that makes an effort to save other species from extinction? Name one species that when seeing its rate of consumption, puts limits on the number of other species their individuals are allowed to kill, and then replenishes them, and sets aside special areas where they may live with little interference from the dominant species.
Now let’s look at the actions of the Q Continuum. It produced humans to the Borg which nearly resulted in our extinction, in multiple occasions. What limits have the Q put on its members in relation to other species?
If the Q will pass judgment on humans for their savagery, why not pass judgment on all species, including those that evolved to have predatorial anatomical features such as fangs, claws, poisons, toxins, electrocution, choking slime, etc? Why not pass judgment on all species that engage in parasitical behavior, including bacteria and viruses?
The Q think themselves so advanced but suppose there are inter dimensional beings that see them the same way they see humans?
I would put human morality against the Q's any day. And perhaps that's the reason that we fascinate you so, because our puny behavior shows you a glimmer of the one thing that evades your omnipotence: a moral center.
My guy, I think you're not remembering the timeline of Startrek, they had a whole ass WW3, eugenics wars, and post apocalypse before getting to the Federation. If anything we're perfectly on track.
That’s a very shallow assessment (meaning no offense). There are many things that are changing for the better, things that we as a species are learning about our universe and what we mean within it - you just have to widen your time scale to see it.
Yes, we have some reckoning to do, but we will do it, because it’s in our nature to always ask what can be better. Big change takes time. Just don’t stop fighting for a better life
I’m glad there are still people around who truly believe that. Not being sarcastic at all, I truly am. Because I really fear it has gone from me . . .
It’s not even about who was elected, it’s the fact that an overwhelming majority of my country has chosen fear over hope, ignorance and bigotry over tolerance, showmanship over intelligence, building walls over building bridges. No one here wants to think, they just want a bully in charge who will teach the rest of the world some harsh lesson they feel needs teaching . . .
Ultimately you’re exactly right, as history has proven again and again. It just sucks when I thought we were closer to an Age of Enlightenment, not an age of regression and ignorance and fear. But here we are . . .

For anyone being sad about how bad things feel, it is canonical that WW3 happens before warp is invented, so things can keep getting bad before they get better, in fact a reset seems to be the only way, sad to say but it happened to the Japanese, they’ll tell you that they weren’t in the best mind set 80 years ago, WW2 changed their trajectory completely. Maybe that what Star Trek lore is trying to say when WW3 has to happen for humanity to get it together.
Alright, Q, look at the massive response to the natural disasters that have taken place just over the summer here in the US — donations, volunteers, and even "just" well-wishes. There were people who took time out of their regular lives and traveled to these places to help for long periods.
And on a less tangible note, a "TV personality" whom I follow closely was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer a few months ago. As soon as we heard, prayers and good energy started flowing his way en masse. As of a couple of weeks ago, he was cancer free. His doctors still can't explain it.
Miracles really do happen, and generally speaking, most human beings are good, Q. Maybe if you would keep an open mind instead of always coming from a place of judgment, it'd be easier to see these things.
Destroying us would make you no better than we are. If you claim moral superiority to humanity, then you would view it as your duty to help us improve ourselves rather than sit in judgment on us.
If you want to play judge, jury, and executioner, there is nothing we can do to stop you. But all you're doing is asserting that your might makes you right, which is a philosophy that you seem to regard as barbaric and savage.
So let me ask you, Q. Do you think you're better than us? If so, prove it.
I'll tell you what, how about instead I agree to be his slave for a year in exchange for him sending me to Vulcan afterwards? Hell, I'd agree to a decade if he'd be willing to send me to Risa.
I'll stick around for content, as long as i can consume good content i'll live, i hoped there was a possibility i could stick around somehow to see the end of the universe, but clearly not with this species it seems, hope is dead.
Okay. . . We are Cruel and savage while at the same time Kind and empathetic. . . it's just sometimes one side wins out. And sometimes when one side wins out the other side steps in

InnerWasteland_111@reddit
The latter is often confused with the former.
whofearsthenight@reddit
I think you should go back and read the words I wrote and reply to that comment rather than whatever you imagined I said. I am not going to respond to the vast majority of your comment because frankly you're making some massive leaps away from what I said, but I will focus on this part:
Nowhere in my comment did I imply this was excusable behavior. What I am getting is that if you start thinking of 70m people as "evil" you justify horrific outcomes. Evil is irredeemable. It's how they get to language like "vermin" and calling for extermination. If we keep that thinking, we are no better than they.
TheKingdomForever@reddit
What is a "good person"? What is "real love" or "fake love"?
popcornchicken42@reddit
Dude, come on. "real love doesn't exist" That's a very shallow perspective.
Gold_Listen_3008@reddit
until it gets offered an upgrade....then its seeyah later
people sell each other out for so little that every relationship can be monetized and there are plenty of parents who would step in front of their children....mine would and they are well off and have no need, but desire for profit is all consuming
insisting real love exists is sad and childish....people are not capable of being more than transactional
If you think someone loves you they just haven't been offered enough to sell you yet or you are just not worth anything to a third party (that was me I thought)
shit
I know my parents hate me because they told me it was my fault they had to get married
sure I'm jaded, and abused, but I lived through that and learned
love is marketing bullshit
InnerWasteland_111@reddit

ThorDoubleYoo@reddit
Good people do exist, the problem is that the only things that matter in life are luck and money. The people with those things are predominantly evil and buy positions of power, so evil runs things and good gets overshadowed.
jgjgleason@reddit
People are a mix of good and evil. The best leaders pull out the best in us, the worst bring out the worst.
The rise of social media (like other forms of mass communication in the past) has made it really really difficult for positive messages to cut through.

I started my rewatch of TNG this morning. Trek got me through the first Trump term. if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
star_nerdy@reddit
I was in graduate school when my mom died. TNG got me through some difficult times. I tried contacting churches and on my first Reddit account, I asked for help and got ignored.
TNG helped me process and ultimately see a therapist. Also, I got to write a paper on wearable tech in Star Trek for an academic conference and I included info in my dissertation about wearable potential uses citing a few TNG episodes.
Star Trek is always my biggest hope. And while I’m not a tattoo person, if I ever got one, Star Trek is the only thing I’d want.
Yotsuya_san@reddit
Might I recommend Babylon 5? There are large parts of it that will unfortunately seem very, very topical... But hope wins in the end.
PhoenixApok@reddit
How does it hold up? I found it a couple days ago on a streaming service. I believe I watched Seasons 2 thru 5 in maybe...2001? 2002?
Yotsuya_san@reddit
PhoenixApok@reddit
I seem to remember hearing that it was originally supposed to be 5 seasons, they thought they were getting canceled so slammed everything into 4, then got approved for the 5th after they had used up all their ideas. So 5 was a scrambling for ideas that didn't work out. I remember not liking it as much but still liking the end.
Remind me is it all continual or is it more episodic like TNG? I remember some of the beats of the main story but I don't remember a lot of details. (Except I just randomly remembered the Centari have six.....appendages....why do I remember THAT?)
Yotsuya_san@reddit
Not all of the Season 5 ideas, but a good chunk of it ended up in season 4. Thus season 5 feels a lot more drawn out. And yes, Babylon 5 is a much more serialized show. One of the first such on television outside of soap operas.
PhoenixApok@reddit
I should give it a few episodes. Thanks

Humans deserve the right to grow into a peaceful civilization, and we will burn the galaxy to a cinder to defend it
lavardera@reddit
So then, why are Q so interested in humans, and not Vulcans or Klingons? Any chance Q evolved from humans?

My only hope is that this is the final part in a two part episode

That’s a very shallow assessment (meaning no offense). There are many things that are changing for the better, things that we as a species are learning about our universe and what we mean within it - you just have to widen your time scale to see it.
Yes, we have some reckoning to do, but we will do it, because it’s in our nature to always ask what can be better. Big change takes time. Just don’t stop fighting for a better life
XPsychoMunkyX@reddit
I’m glad there are still people around who truly believe that. Not being sarcastic at all, I truly am. Because I really fear it has gone from me . . .
It’s not even about who was elected, it’s the fact that an overwhelming majority of my country has chosen fear over hope, ignorance and bigotry over tolerance, showmanship over intelligence, building walls over building bridges. No one here wants to think, they just want a bully in charge who will teach the rest of the world some harsh lesson they feel needs teaching . . .

it would be a genuine luxury to be an alien, watching humanity from a distance and feeling reassured of the decision to leave these self destructive dishonest treacherous fucksticks out of the paradise their dreams contributed to building (see 'Sleeping Satellite by Tasmin Archer')
I'm too close to feel anything but disgust, however I'm going to get cold now
