Would you upgrade to the 7800x3d or 9800x3d?

I play in 1440p and the benchmarks for the 9800x3d compared to the 7800x3d are like a 2-3 fps difference.
7800x3d has more stability and less power draw but the 9800x3d is more powerful and only like $20+ dollars more.
Which would y'all recommend I get?

I'm going to upgrade to the 9800x3d from a 13700k. The only PC game I play is WoW though.

I'm honestly torn whether or not I should upgrade my 5800X3D. On one hand, I have a 4080 and playbat 4K so common sense would say no. But I noticed a lot of the games I play (Warhammer Darktide, Vermintide, and Helldivers 2 just to name a few) are very CPU-bound and even at 4K I see gpu utilization drop to the 60s.
SJEPA@reddit
If I had a 5800x3d I wouldn't bother, especially at 4k.
Mecha120@reddit
Again, that would normally be the case but the fact that most of the games I've been playing for a long time are seemingly cpu-bound doesn't make it as clear cut as I would like

I've seen some people say they're gonna stick with their 5800X3D because they game on higher resolutions. I haven't seen anyone talk about specific games being CPU heavy though

The 9800X3D is more than 2-3 FPS difference though... The 1% lows are much better on the 9800X3D. Both are great CPUs, but I would personally go with the 9800X3D, that said, they are going to be hard to find/get, so if you want a PC now, it might be the 7800X3D you have to go with.

Just as important as high fps imo if not more. Flattest frametime>high fps any day.
Aergaia@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I know, but I'm not good with the technical aspects of why the higher fps in 1080p make it stand out. I just see numbers
Halbzu@reddit
Always compare in relative numbers.

It really depends on how much time you have to mess around with your system if something bad happens.
The 7800x3D is "tried and true," with no concerns about stability, quality control, etc. The new one is none of those things. Now it's likely that it will be just fine, especially in the current world we live in with all the Intel 13th and 14th gen issues. AMD is really poised to make a statement with Ryzen 9, and it would be monumentally stupid of them to release something that is less than perfect right now.
BUT, mistakes happen, and it's possible that the 9800x3D will not be stable. If that happens to you, do you have time to configure a backup system, disassemble your desktop, RMA the chip, etc.?
Aergaia@reddit (OP)
I'm basically going to build a new pc instead of just upgrading the CPU. But yeah, I have time in case things go south.
OfAnOldRepublic@reddit
Then the 9 is a no-brainer. :)
Kisuke42@reddit
+20$ is only an assumption now. 7800x3D is barly found anywhere and we only know about the 9800x3D MSRP.
Once both of them are on shelves then you can decide.
Aergaia@reddit (OP)
I can get a 7800x3d for $475 right now, but according to news outlets the 9800x3d will be $480
Kisuke42@reddit
As long as you can get the 9800x3D for 500 or under then yes, you should go for it.
Mr_SlimShady@reddit
Pricing is the deciding factor here. Based on the few benchmarks out there, it seems like both perform about the same on 1440p and 4k gaming. If you can find the 7800x3d for less than $400, then buy that one.
Aergaia@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I can only get the 7800x3d for $475 and up
Stargate_1@reddit
Not sure what you mean by stability

It was to my understanding that the first iteration of any technical product is mass tested by consumers and us then changed over the course of its life span.

9800x3d
Apprehensive-Pen1833@reddit
i bought 7600 for this reason.. now i can upgrade to 9800x3d without hesitasion
Zoenobium@reddit
If the difference is like 20$ just buy the more powerful one. In the long run the answer is likely just to get the one you can find a better deal on or if they are close in price get the 9800x3d
zh4mst3rz@reddit
so you are having 7800x3d and questioning about whether or not to buy 9800x3d?
or you are wondering between the two?
Aergaia@reddit (OP)
Between the two
zh4mst3rz@reddit
i still vote for the 9800x3d since it can run at higher speed and cooler. 20-30$ for that is good
n7_trekkie@reddit
with what gpu?
rizzzeh@reddit
whichever is cheaper
