that, and the literal brain damage caused by each covid infection (which many americans are on number 4 and 5 of) is added to whatever bullshit existed beforehand
I had a conspiracy theory that I joked about that Covid might be like Toxoplasmosis; maybe once you get infected with Covid, it fucks up something in your brain somewhere that makes you take safety precautions, so you're more likely to engage in dangerous behavior and get reinfected with it more and more.
That's wild right? That can't happen, right? Right?
In case of boomers, "bullshit existed beforehand" would include truly awful things such as lead poisoning and Reaganism. At least Gen Z "only" have to deal with microplastics and the forever chemicals.
I just pretend the part of my brain that knows about prions is already turned into a hole from prion disease. That’s one anxiety I just had to immediately chuck out of my brain. Nothing I can do about it!
World has been getting slowly worse for a long time. 2020 just kicked it into high gear. Remember 2020 never would have happened the way it did if Trump never would have been there in 2016, and he never would have made office if the nation was so fucking racist and angry at having elected Obama. Racist fuckwits who rose due to years of insidious legislation designed to ruin our educational system all the way back to Regan.
I can keep going all the way back to the founding of America, and even further into why America is like it is because of holdover traditions deeply ingrained in the fabric of our colonial settlements thanks to the fucking Puritans.
While yes, we have made some strides in some regards, but it was despite all of this. Yet even still, all that progress did was place bandaids on bruises. The damage was coming from the inside all along.
If you actually attempted some critical thought you'd see that I'm literally explaining the historical context for why neoliberalism became a thing at all.
You think neoliberalism was a thing back when the fucking Puritans landed at apply Plymouth Rock?
[Trump] never would have made office if the nation was so fucking racist and angry at having elected Obama.
I agree that racism played a big role.
And the Democrats made their bed with their response to the mortgage financial crisis - too little, too late, bailing out the banks / the rich, leaving out the normal folks out to dry with their mortgages "underwater".
And remember that whole "change" campaign slogans? Obama ended up re-appointing 50-70% of the people that GWB had appointed.
You are of course correct, the problems started even before that, with the "3rd way Democrats" and selling out the interest of the working class to the big corps.
When COVID started and everybody was saying to wash our hands, I was reminded of this "little" fact I had seen a couple of months before:
in 2016, 1 in every 20 households were disconnected by public water departments, leaving an estimated 15 million Americans without running water.
Memory Refresher: 2016 was during the Obama years.
Human society is a failed experiment.
There have been many societies/cultures/civilizations over the centuries https://fallofcivilizationspodcast.com/
The Anglo-American hyper-capitalist society is a failed experiment. And it looks like it may set the entire lab on fire before it burns out.
I still have hope that China may survive, if we somehow manage to avoid Nuclear War.
I'll be the first one to admit that I don't know enough about China. But from what I've seen their society has a much better social safety net, and is able to lift 800 million out of poverty, invest heavily in public services (like 46 000 km / 29 000 mi of high speed rail which has "attracted passengers from all income levels" according to the Worldbank).
Their international policy projects like the Belt & Road initiative stand in stark contrasts with American imperialism and neo-colonialism.
Are they a perfect communist utopia, a classless, moneyless society? Of course not.

I know there have been many. As an Anarchist I love reading and studying how other societies formed and organized, especially early humans. Unfortunately they were all wiped out by the hyper-capitalist society we have today. This this is the end result of all of human society. Ergo, human society has been a failed experiment in one way or another.
Until global capitalism falls, nothing will succeed. Unfortunately what seems to be the most likely end to capitalism is also going to be our extinction.
I would take an AI leader programmed to follow Utilitarianism (the morally right action is the one that does the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people) over what we currently have, leaders that think that the morally right action is the one that does the greatest amount of good for the 1%.
I read on another subreddit that someone said when people were put into lockdown during COVID, they felt like they were belittled, had no control and as though it was almost a personal attack on them. They felt as if time was stolen from them.
As a result, since the pandemic ended, people have become more openly rude, less patient and understanding, aggressive, selfish and entitled. They view this as a way of making up for their imprisonment.
I mean, every poll on the planet has shown that the climate/planet is not the #1 priority for any population in the world. Like literally even in the places where you are most affected by climate change, it is like #4-5 priority for people.
I mean part of that is deliberate. You do need to legitimately seek out information to see how bad the picture truly is, as the news media will never give people the stark truth of how many critical viability markers the earth is staring down.
Even then, when faced with something so insurmountable and uncomfortable, people will want to not think about. Especially with how powerless a normal human is against the issues due to our negligible effect to the scale of the problem, and that we are opposed by some of the powerful people who want to keep business as usual.
All because a comparable handful of people want more than a reasonable "share" and the ability to control people. It's really sick.
There is enough money in the hands of a few people to completely end homelessness and starvation and yet...it doesn't happen. They'd rather do shit like purchase Twitter with it "as a meme."
Right, climate change can’t be your number one priority when you’re trying to feed yourself and your family. It’s a much more vague threat in the presence of seemingly insurmountable day to day issues.
Evidently. But it’s also not really their responsibility. You can’t squeeze emissions from those who don’t emit (the poor). The “trying to survive” folk are not the ones flying, buying cars every yr, etc. (the meat point is somewhat different). This is on the people with money who are the ones destroying the enviro. Aka my colleagues and I that are college educated and make above 60k. After all, it’s usually the elite that define what a “desirable” society is. Even after the French revolution most french revolutionaries modeled their fashions after noble social norms.
God damn that’s the real ticking time bomb too. The fact that a significant amount of Americans have gotten their brains and organs cooked by Long Covid, and even more will continue to get the disease.
At my job, we created an employee group that specifically does sustainability work on top of what the company is already doing. It makes a difference at our campus. If most companies had this, I think it would have a big impact and it only requires a few people to do so.
Obviously it won't fix everything, but people need to understand they have the power to make change happen.
While I do agree with you that people have the chance to make change, convincing companies 1 by 1 is frankly not a real option, especially when our fundamental system of making everyone work 40 hours plus to drive a growth driven economy is the key driver of our extinction. This is an issue where the distribution of power needs to be completely upended.
Our economic system needs to change to one based on sustainability, resilience, restoration in order to face the brutal climatic impacts we have already guaranteed. The idea of green growth is nothing more than an illusion from the ghouls on top trying to squeeze every last drop of blood out of this beautiful rock we call Earth as they make in unfit for human life
Of course. I consider myself a pragmatic degrowther, and part of that is shunning flying whenever possible. But like 90% of the people I meet working in climate policy are like mega-frequent fliers anyways. People, even well informed ones, don't wanna think about it.
I think that’s where I’m at too with pragmatic degrowth. I’m lucky to live in the NE corridor and have lots of trains to get around with. It is crazy how wasteful this country is with flying, especially when these airlines can’t even survive as real companies and are just glorified credit cards.
Forget flying. Even on this "collapse-aware" subreddit, people recoil at the idea that we need to all eat less meat. My example I like to use is my mom who grew up in a communist-era farm without massive energy-intensive supply chains that gave fertilizer, etc. She ate meat once or twice a month AT MOST. She used to tell me how the only animal thing they ate every week was the dozen eggs she shared with the 10 other people in her household.
The main story of this election is that anyone who voted for Trump thinks it won’t happen to them. Everyone thinks climate change either won’t be as bad as they say or at least they’ll not be in the path of the next mega-hurricane.
Blue/white collared voters think Trump will save them from the clear future where AI takes most of their jobs. Latinos think they’ll only deport “illegals” but will be anyone who actually be anyone “who “looks like they don’t belong”. White women think that they’ll never be in a position where they need women’s health like contraceptions or to terminate a pregnancy unexpectedly.
Well all those futures just became a lot more likely and will be coming even faster now
Somehow, the #1 priority is tiny minority groups that have been elevated by the alt-right media into boogymen that threaten everyone's lives by kissing the wrong people and using the wrong bathrooms and having slightly browner skin.
But someone in Maldives or Kiribati or actually their entire population forever has less of a carbon footprint than a US state for 1 year probably. It's really not the same.
You guys are the most responsible and are proud of it. It's disgusting really.
My theory is that it’s related to climate change but through like weird tangents. As Earth has become more polluted and begun to run a fever, its inhabitants are becoming increasingly unhinged. Gaia theory kind of thing
Humans are fucking brainless apes who shit in their own hands. That is what is wrong with humanity. We are destroying our only home and all things. What makes it even worse is that we can rationalise and understand what we are doing, yet we continue to do what is ultimately going to destroy a habitable planet for most life on it.
We've only existed for like 250,000 years. We wouldn't be dominating the planet like this already if there weren't something seriously wrong with us. If we were properly successful we'd still be living in balance with the global ecosphere. We're like a ram growing a giant awesome horn that's impaling its own head.
Can anyone here honestly gather up 5 people willing to start tomorrow of living a 1800s lifestyle? No ramp up. Just start. No tech. No fridge. Hand sew clothes hunt food or die. We can’t
The libs cared more about sponsoring genocide and crushing the left than they did about defeating fascism. This is the result. And they're fine with it.
It's time to choose dinner. Your options are either a completely unappetizing, stale balogna sandwich that has been sitting out on the counter for too long, or a pile of broken glass. If you decide not to choose, the broken glass will be served by default.
Getting mad at the democrats for being an unappealing option when the ONLY OTHER OPTION is literal fascism is idiocy. Trump will not only support the genocide in Palestine, he will encourage it. He will do everything in his power to make it worse and draw the entire region into a larger war.
When your ONLY TWO options are bad or awful, you either hold your nose and choose bad, or awful is forced on you.
I am pointing out that its Democrats fault for not choosing a better candidate or even trying. And the numbers reflect that - democracy is at stake thats why they choose a dogshit candidate with milquetoast promises?
Yep, a two party system sucks. Unfortunately, this is the system we have, and those are the candidates we have. Not voting for the clearly better option because of a single issue is doing nothing but shooting yourself, the country, and the world in the foot.
Sure. People should have gotten off their asses and voted for Kamala. But it's also fair to point out that the Democrats didn't have to push her as their candidate. Biden should have been a one term president, they should have been getting people excited about new candidates during the primaries, they shouldn't have pushed a candidate through without being voted in, and they certainly shouldn't have been running on a republican-light platform.
It's actually fucking ridiclious how idiotic the Democrats are. Less people voted for Trump this time around. It would NOT have been hard to beat him. This is their own damn fault.
"This is a way more complex topic than just Israel bad. We can understand your frustration but we can not simply intervene and agree to all demands of hamas terrorists. We have to support our ally Israel first and foremost but we will do everything to stop the suffering of any unintentionally involved people"
- Dems
"Yeah Ben, glass this place."
- Donald
These were the two choices and you managed to pick the worse. Congrats
I am not an American. If your two options is glassing gaza and glassig gaza a little less then I dont even blame American voters for refusing to vote for her. She sucks and democrats have noone but themselves to blame. They couldve held a primary earlier, selected an actually competent and likeable candidate but they tried to shove half dead Biden down your throat.
Blaming leftists for this defeat is ridiculous, Trump ran the battleground states and increased his vote share on 2016, you can’t blame that on leftists who were also leftists in 2016, the wider population chose the candidate they believed would raise their living standards the most, same as it has always been,
I am not blaming leftists. I just said poster's logic is completely twisted. And I would say that this whole narrative that dems are driving prices is one of the big successful disinfo campaigns. You could nearly only hear in the media what someone was thinking or interpreting of Harris' words and not the source itself. They really spun the narrative and forgave trump every word. I would not blame the party, I blame the uneducated people
This might have been an effective argument if the Biden administration did anything to push back on Netanyahu. They did not, which is why no one can ever provide specifics on how Trump will be worse since Biden gave Israel everything they wanted.
are you slow? Biden absolutely told Netanyahu to not completely level the thing in the first place. Have you read Netanyahu's statement congratulating trump? That was one of trump's few consistent points, that he will let Israel make fast process in gaza. hahahaha. If you really self mutilated your country over this issue, congrats man.
I mean with Harris there is a chance that you can make proposals and negotiations with her. With dictator on day one you will basically get what he thinks is right. I hope democratically abandoning your democracy for years to come over an issue with a conflict most Americans could not even locate on a world map was worth it.
Netanyahu ravaged Gaza with the weapons Biden gave him. Telling him not to do it while giving him more weapons every time he does it is exactly why no one takes Biden at his word when he pretends to be upset. Remember when Rafah was a red line? Remember when we were building a pier to deliver aid? It was always bullshit. This "chance" to negotiate with Harris never existed, she explicitly stated she would not restrict weapons to Israel and wouldn't even let a Palestinian speak at the convention. And plenty of people can locate Gaza on a map - especially the Arabs/Muslims who used to vote for Democrats and abandoned them after seeing their relatives exterminated with the weapons Biden provided.
a) Israel is not killing indiscriminately as far as I can see. They are mostly targeting hamas. Sure it is bad that people are affected that should not be.
b) gaza / hamas / palestine brought this over themselves. No one besides their leaders told them to slaughter innocent people in Israel on October 7th and days following. So this is kind of the consequence that does not give you any position to cry genocide.
c) Harris is not Biden and it idiotic to think trump would be better at resolving this conflict. A guy that couldn't even spell the name palestine if he was asked to.
d) By actively enabling trump as Arabs/Muslims, these groups are in danger of being one of the first on the "MASS DEPORTATIONS NOW" list. You can just head over to conservative and scroll a few days back to see how they hate these protestors with a passion.
Congrats on that one, lost the 5d chess. But fun to watch from an outsider's perspective
So many doctors without borders have come forward saying how every single day there would be tons of small under 5 year old children with sniper head and chest wounds. The toddlers picking through the rubble of their homes looking for their parents must have been confused for Hamas members when the Israelis start using them as long distance target practice.
Israel can deny access to as many journalists and blow up as many aide workers as they want, in this day and age it's impossible to squash all information coming out of a warzone.
which is why no one can ever provide specifics on how Trump will be worse since Biden gave Israel everything they wanted.
The way Trump talks about Muslims should give you a very clear idea about that. I remember him talking about shithole countries and wanting people from countries like Sweden for example.
Trump's inane ramblings are a lot less meaningful to Muslims than Biden giving Israel the weapons to exterminate their extended families. No one expects Trump to be better, but they are more concerned with what Biden has actually done than what Trump will hypothetically do.
Why are you acting like I'm trying to defend Trump? He's a fascist who will be terrible for minorities. That doesn't change the fact that Biden is the one in power who is tangibly hurting them right now. People are angry about that and they are responding to it. If someone hurts your family you're not going to forgive them just because they tell you someone else would have done the same thing.
You are comparing a wall, on the Mexican border, which both administrations have helped build, to the deliberate extermination of tens of thousands of Muslim civilians. These things are not remotely comparable and this conversation is pointless.
The Democrats were unwilling to differentiate themselves from the Republicans, and so they failed to win the election.
Yes, even a fool should have seen that they were less bad than the Republicans - if you voted for the Republicans, or didn't vote, you were either a knave or a fool or likely both - but "Not the Republicans" is not a winning slogan.
The Democrats have refused to either effectively oppose the Republicans, or step out of the way to allow younger and more energetic progressives to enter the fray.
They deserve 100% of the blame for this catastrophic result.
It seems we deserve what's coming. Not in a spiritual, humanizing life, or fate kinda way. More like, we literally kept doing what we knew will kill us all, so we get the expected end result.
There always was. If you read any of the great thinkers and philosopher since the written word was created right up to now, they all have the same lament.
We fucked up society a long time ago. Before we knew it we built structures that were counter intuitive to the very foundational reasoning behind forming society in the first place: making sure everyone's needs got met and life easier. Instead we somehow pigeonholed ourselves into readily corruptible systems that allow the rights to the earth itself be relegated into the hands of only a few hundred, maybe thousand individuals in a world of billions.
How we are not absolutely angry and infuriated over this discrepancy is beyond me.
70% of Britain’s land remains in the hand of less than 1% of its population, with a mere 160,000 families owning 66% of it, since the Norman conquest in 1066
A thousand years!
And it's not just land. Education too:
In a recent study that examined the enrollment at Cambridge and Oxford over the last thousand years, it was revealed that at certain times, Norman names were 800% more common at Oxford than in the general population, and more recently, were at least twice as likely to found in that institution’s enrollment.
we weren't meant to have access to this much information and this many people's opinions. social media and 24/7 news has overwhelmed our collective ability to govern ourselves in a way that benefits our species.
If it's any consolation, it's probably not just us. Seems pretty likely that this is the Great Filter of the Fermi Paradox coming to sweep us into the dustbin of universal history. We haven't detected any signs of intelligent life anywhere out there because they all ran into a similar fate and boiled themselves alive on their home planets before they were advanced enough to leave.
Climate change wasn't going to stop with a Democrat in the White House.
If Trump manages to incite a civil war that nukes the entire country into flat glass, it'll do more to stop emissions than any other measure. And you know what? It'll be exactly what this country deserves.
This post is collapse related due to the recent usamerican election decision. Donald trump is again the president of the united states and will enact legislation to mine for materials and drill for oil and natural gas, this destroying what little protected land remains and effectively setting in stone our climate extinction. That is if nuclear war doesnt happen first. He will likely destroy the inflation reduction act first which was in my opinion the last fleeting glimmer of hope for humanities fight against climate change. These next four years will be terrible for the united states and have long lasting ripple effects on the rest of the world.
We massively expanded oil and gas production under Biden and put huge tariffs on cheap solar panels and EV and in exchange we built like 5 EV chargers.
No no no, the threat of nuclear war is pretty much gone. We're WITH the fascists now. Our newest doom is a sped-up repressed, starving, polluted, and cancerous death. Faster than expected.
I was still holding out hope that we geoengineered ourselves some time. Not the best solution, but it would have been something. Now even that hope is gone
Yeah, I get the general idea, I meant the specifics though. Was there some kind of plan or proposal put forward by someone that I can read up on? Or just a general brainstorming idea?
I got you. No, nothing specific that I’m aware of is being proposed. I know there’s a lot of ideas. I was just expressing my belief that we are beyond a natural solution. Saving Earth from climate change at this point in the game with take geoengineering, and it will most likely come from the private sector because I highly doubt the US government will do anything. My suspicion under another Trump administration we will see major cuts in all the environmental protections and regulation we’ve made. I can only see climate change getting worse.
Yeah, that's about the same outlook I have at this point. I mean, I honestly didn't have much hope to begin with. I feel like it's just about too late with climate change, and even if we beat that by some miracle, microplastics will still get us in the long run. Now though, things will only get worse and the decline will be sped up in the name of profits. It's truly depressing how little the people in charge around the world care about humanity's only home.
It's the best week to quit smoking! Save the money, you're going to need it for your to-do list: https://bsky.app/profile/rahaeli.bsky.social/post/3labvxce57a2r
This is actually comforting. I'm so down at work, I've been on the verge of tears most of the day. And I don't even have anyone I can talk to about this IRL or anyone to hug
And we just saw the new chef coming in the kitchen, and he looks like he’s about to set the whole thing on fire and that he deserves 3 stars for that mess
Yes. Before it was the doctor saying "you have terminal cancer, here are some treatments that may stop it."
As of today, it's "I am sorry, we have tried every possible treatment but all have failed and it's only getting worse. You will be dead shortly. Go home and try and enjoy the little time you have left."
We know it's not Friday but we're leaving this one up as a venting/processing thread for people in terms of the impact of the U.S. Election on climate policy in the United States.
I don't get this attitude at all? The Dem's polices on climate change are just as bad as any other parties? Their policies and legislation barely move the needle either? Neither party cares about climate change.
one party says it's a chinese hoax. the other party acknowledges its reality and doesn't exactly offer many solutions, but passed one of the biggest climate laws ever.
I’ll explain it simply for you on the off chance you said that in good faith. Dems would be a status quo slow descent into collapse. What we have now is full foot on the pedal towards whatever is next.
They're both the same thing. No party is stopping or slow down climate change. It's disingenuous to post some meme acting like one party is going to make any difference over the other. It's just another form of copium pretending that a political party has some capability to save us. Both are complete abject failures on this matter. The over all intelligence of the group is seriously waning.
Please learn how to use punctuation correctly. Why do the first three sentences in your comment all end with question marks when they are clearly declarative? It makes you sound like a moron who doesn't know what he's talking about. So does the content of those sentences, but that's another issue.
That's true it will be the people that suffer. Earth will be fine in a couple million years. Humanity will just be another blip in the cosmic timeline. Forgotten after many millenia. Maybe to be bug back up.again by intelligent life, I hope they do it better next time in that universe.
They're not stupid, they're insanely greedy. Solving climate change implies to somehow exit capitalism, but people, in their infinite wisdom, chose comfort instead. Why make efforts to not shit the bed while you could just own a bigger house to fill it with more junk you need to throw away every few years instead?
Calling them stupid is too easy and missing the point. That's the purpose I guess, there are plenty of greedy people on this sub too, but it won't help address the crisis. What everyone needs to do is own less, have less, and to start repairing your old stuff, some people need to do that more than others for sure but eventually we have to realize that even the middle class in western countries doesn't have reasonable expectations when it comes to standards of living vs what the planet and biosphere can handle.
Saw one of those electric cork poppers at someone's house. thought it was a fleshlight at first. anyways I looked it up and they're like $30 fucking dollars. and it has to charge. so it's on your counter instead of a drawer. all that to avoid having to gasp manually uncork a wine bottle. like what industrial scale wine bottle opening are thou doing that makes power tools necessary? anyway point is people are fucking dumb and past a certain point they just start buying stupid shit. part of me has wondered a lot if all the pressure by the powers that be to keep wages down and shrink the middle class is because they see financial regulation as the only true method to controlling people's stupid buying habits.
I remember talking to a native Hawaiian who was protesting the TMT (Thirty Meter Telescope) back in 2014, and I was shocked that he was against scientific progress.
He calmly explained to me that he's not against progress, he's against colonialism. Progress is learning to live in a finite world with finite resources, and he knew that the TMT would just allow humans to eventually colonize other worlds and plunder their resources too.
I get it now, we're a cancer that must be stopped.
Jumping from the TMT to interplanetary colonization is a huge leap. I don't see humans ever reaching another star system, and every other environment in the Solar system is less suitable for a colony than under the ocean or in the deep deserts of earth. I love science fiction, but the Great Filter is upon us, and we're not passing through.
No, there is a way to reduce carbon emissions without disruption to capitalism. Look at China.
If anything, this cements that China will become the number one super power. They have the solar panel production and the electric car production. The only thing they lack is microchip manufacturing. But they will overtake the US.
Like they say, the stone age did not end because we ran out of stones. The USA will stay in today's stone age but China will move on to electrification. Electrification is at least 3 times more efficient than fossil fuels. Therefore those that electrify will see a larger GDP.
But the ruling class in the USA are fossil fuels families like the Bushes and the coke bros. So they are destined to fail.
Apparently Taiwan's chip factories are set to wipe everything and all the machines are rigged to remotely self destruct in the event of an invasion. This was stated directly by the chairman of the TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). They'll burn the factories to the ground before they let Winnie get his hands on them.
I just hope we can militarize fast enough in Europe. We are also turning to extreme right that wants to suck off Putin so I guess there will be peace in the end? Peace.. but a kleptocracy with us workers under heavier and heavier boot?
But there are not enough resources for all countries to swap out fossil fuels for green tech. Electric cars are just what we thought hybrids would be twenty years ago. They are just another way for people to consume while feeling smug for thinking they are doing anything meaningful for the planet.
There are enough resources. Copper lithium if there is plenty of the demand for it. The people that pull out 13 million barrels of oil per year out of the ground somehow think it is not possible ?
The issue is that Saudi Arabia and Texas won't be a world powers, it will be Chile and Australia. But the resources are there. Just not in the hands of those currently in power.
I was going to say we're like lemmings following each other off a cliff, but then I remembered they don't actually do that and the myth comes from an old documentary where the filmmakers actually just threw the lemmings off the cliff to stage it :(
So I guess we're more like cows stampeding off of a cliff, everyone following the people in front of them assuming they know where they're going.
The awfully ironic thing is that we hate our lives and the modern world, but won't stop fantasizing about paradise and fix what we have. We're depressed, modern jobs suck, relationships suck (the fucking gender war) and the solution to all of this is to accept simpler more modest lives. This also saves the planet, but we won't do it. One of the more common fantasies i've seen, moving to a rural place and having a small farm, would actually help, but more people fantasize about it than doing it.
I don't think the world can sustain several billions small farms. We need cities not to completely consume any available land for agriculture. That being said, we can live in better cities and without jobs in finance.
My gf asked me several months ago when the US was the most violent (internally). I flatly replied 'during slavery, antebellum'. The law required violence at all levels in order to keep the order in place. That doesn't even touch on the violence towards the indigenous peoples at the time.
The US is and has been violent. It had a period of time when it acted civilized, but that door has closed.
Bro don't bother mentioning the indigenous people. Most subs seem to disregard them. They were violently eradicated from the Americas. That says it all. Over 100 millions people gone in less than 200 years.
I don't know much on that topic, but are you sure you didn't add an extra zero by accident? I don't see how 100M hunter-gatherers could live on that continent.
People always joke but i promise you the real brain drain is gonna start now.
Especially with so many people without kids to anchor them. From hear on out america is going to get dumber and dumber
I was just pointing out that its easier to emigrate without kids than with. And that statistically many people are having less children. So over all this would increase the chances of emigration.
Assuming other countries will take them. Immigration is a big issue worldwide and countries are only going to get tougher as time goes on. It starts with illegal immigrants but people will get more and more anti-immigrant as time goes on.
In 2016, when Tump won the first time, I laughed out loud, because I thought, "yeah, that's the fucking President those fuckers deserve. Now they have the chance to learn something from it." I overestimated your willingness to learn from mistakes. But don't worry. Just keep blaming anything bad happening on the Cartoon Villain du jour (Putin, Xi, what have you) and you'll never have to do a day of learning in your life.
Guaranteed Vance and the theocrats are already planning how they’re going to lock him away come February. Trump has let the demons into his own house. They all know he’s too old to last long so their loyalties are a facade.
No need for quotation marks. The reality is that the average American is just not what you expected; they have always been like this. The real difference over the last few years is that they have let the mask slip and are happy to show their true colours and to get whipped up into a frenzy over nothing.
We're fresh out of an election with fossil-award-winning fash getting re-elected in Japan. The US isn't alone in this, just disproportionately more powerful.
Good thing you are stocking up, irreversible corn and soy blights that will be affecting American cash crops, mixed with contrived and slow bureaucratic response rollouts, will prevent you from getting more in the future.
Mars is a scam. Always has been. SpaceX's only interest is making lots of money by tossing lots of things (including rich celebrities with money to burn) into low-Earth orbit. Just like how Hollywood blockbuster movies have a huge portion of their budget go into marketing rather than moviemaking, so too does SpaceX allocate budget to performative bullshit rather than practical rocketry.
China has significantly lower emissions per capita than the united states currently. And historically the us is by far the biggest emitter with the british empire in second place. The us should pay the brunt of the cost.
No, resident populations having such a resource within their boundaries shouldn't be cleansed in order to facilitate development which accrues to the cleansing entity.
Ah yes, exactly that! $500 billion is a lot of billions. Bread and circuses in the meantime, but Netanyahu and his government are going to be exceedingly wealthy in the coming years… when they’re all ~hiding~ living in the USA.
Sell extracted fossil fuel to Europe (warm them this winter); checkmate Russian energy blackmail; make Israel rich; exclude Palestinians. What's not to love?
Welp, Azerbaijan did kind of invent mass drilling on a gigantic scale… so it’s only to be expected that they would end up behaving like a mini USA…
These are the kind of “nasty news stories” we were told to look out for as one of the four horsemen of the coming rapid spiral. One country kills 200k, the next one displaces 100k, another country kills half of the 100k displaced migrants trying to enter… sooner or later those Ks become Ms, and then all of us completely give up hope for a normal life (or a normal death).
Based on what evidence? There’s still a GOP senate and most likely congress. All the corporations causing climate change have our government in their back pockets. The president wouldn’t be able to do shit even if they wanted to and I have news for you: they don’t really give a shit, no matter what color tie they have on
Preparing for death and its possibilities since no one really knows what happens after. A difficult life and figuring out how to deal with adversity leaves one much more prepared than a comfortable one.
Probably way too much of it is morbid curiosity as to how things will turn out. I find this world to be kind of gross and have largely emotionally divested myself from whatever its ultimate fate may be, and have been shedding physical attachments for many years. This is not entirely due to politics or climate change or things like that, though that is a large part - the whole shebang is generally just not a good fit for me.
That said, there is still beauty in this world, and it is full of beautiful people, even if I may not fit entirely comfortably among them. So I try to do my part in support of that beauty, though I separate my emotional well being from whether that effort ends up making any difference or not.
The nice answer: I still have people I care about. I still enjoy speaking for those who are too meek or too nice, even when the problems of the world generally don't affect me. There are things I like to do, things I like to experience, things I like to build and hold and change.
The real answer: It is an undeniable fear of death that is embedded deep in my biology. I have been suicidal since I was about 9 years old; for nearly 30 years now I've lived each year convinced I will not see the next, yet the next always comes. I want to die the same way a meth addict wants to quit, but I am addicted to being alive and can't stop.
To quote a Bond villain, life clings to me like a disease.
I was so angry a few hours ago. Now, the anger is replaced with a strange sort of acceptance. The fact that only 40% of Americans felt the need to vote speaks volumes.
We will happily vote against our best interests. The review the other day about methane volumes was scary enough.
“We’re on an express elevator to hell, going down.”
Those guys could hop to another planet.
We can’t, and now it’s 100% nature-verified that we’re on the way out. All youse guys, I hope you survive well!
It would be better to use the average voter turnout in the swing states, where votes actually matter, for a useful statistic. I'd imagine the number would be higher, and that's pretty easy math, but I'm too over this world to do it for myself.
but their grand genius elmo said they will be on mars by 2025 and we will all live there happily so no problem. We can just f'ck this one earth we got up and then hop to mars. It is just a two days journey with a rocket technology that struggles to be at NASA's state of the art in the 70s
The further right the dyad Party moves, the smaller the electorate (the very right-wing types). It also makes political funding easier as the target customers are fewer.
The only reason it didn't break my heart is because I went through it in 2016. But back then, I figured "eh, they want a change, they think Trump will 'clear the swamp', etc. etc."
But this time, they knew exactly what they were getting and voted for him anyway. They deserve everything that happens.
I get angry with my friends too because they just look at this like some sort of regular political change. I swear to fuck I don’t think I’m overreacting, this really is bigger than just some new name in command.
Most people I know just crack jokes about it, and I do try to be nice and not argue cause I know it’s pointless but I hate how oblivious people are to this shit. I’m not talking about kids, I’m in my 30s, most of my friends are mid 30s to 40s, I just don’t get it.
We really truly fucking lost the last hope of climate change ever having a chance as if it wasn’t the slightest in the world already anyway. I don’t know what it would take for people to care, at this point I really think that nothing is the answer.
I feel more understood by some strangers on Reddit than by my friends, thank fuck my gf is onboard cause I would probably go mad otherwise lol.
Yeah, things are about to take a drastic turn. Modern life as we know it is being faded out, to be replaced with nightmare scenarios in all aspects of the cult’s control. And the ones who will be harmed the most are the ones who are most vulnerable.
You gotta switch to the 'whatever, it doesn't matter anyway' approach tbh. Because it truly does not matter in the end. Since the humanity created the first steam engine there never was a chance that all would be fine. And the Earth and life will go on without us. Actually, both will breathe more easily without us. Just try to have fun while it lasts.
Honestly, I'm not even sure about that. Microplastics seem like a ticking timebomb to me. They're so ubiquitous now, imagine in a couple centuries when the billions of tons of plastic garbage has really started degrading and we have hundreds of times the microplastic levels in the environment. I doubt many species are going to thrive with kilograms worth of plastic built up in their organs, leeching chemicals into them. Not to mention the fertility damaging effects. I feel there's a good chance we're going to be taking everything out with us when we leave. Maybe the microbial life will survive
I've never blamed industrialization. Humanity has been raping the world of its natural resources since the very beginning. Even in pre-civilization they wiped out North American megafauna with the same brutal efficiency that Wild West Americans did to bison.
It's funny how people like to romanticize whatever period of humanity they believe existed before things "got bad", but the reality is humans haven't really changed in tens of thousands of years, only their scope of power. They were never smarter, never kinder, never less short-sighted. We know that early man hunted the mammoth to extinction, but it's only an assumption that they did so for food and other needs.
But what if they were just like us now, just like Buffalo Bill? What if they hunted the species to extinction for the fun of it.
I'm very sorry to hear that. I don't have any advice for you or anything, I just wanted to say that some random guy in France is really feeling for you and all the other decent Americans who are freaking out today because of this catastrophe.
I see that it is once again time to remind partisans, apologists, and deniers in this subreddit that they should not blame leftists, immigrants, young folks, disengaged folks, migrants, or whatever outgroup. Place the blame solely on the party that was supposed to run Joe as a one-timer in the name of stability before ponying up a progressive leader. Instead they spent four years jerking off fossil fuel companies. By laser focusing your attention of identity politics - intersectionality without critical analysis esp class struggle - they accomplish ghoulish feats such as drastically expanding fossil fuel extraction and juicing the military industrial complex. No, the democrats aren't better or even less bad with respect to the environment.
Somehow, absurdly, this timeline has produced a political party that denies climate change, but through their own ineptitude is less accomplished at greasing the wheels of business. On the other hand, the party that softly acknowledges climate change has produced outcomes that are significantly, horrifically, catastrophically worse for the environment. Biden's presidency saw massive fossil fuel expansion despite his explicit promise not to. Harris promised to continue that and expand fracking. Please read below links carefully and ask yourself what job you're going to do in very near future economy: soldier or field laborer
2020
Aug 6 - While campaigning for the presidency, Joe Biden promises to ban the expansion of fossil fuel exploitation on federal lands as part of his $1.7 trillion climate plan labeled ‘Green New Deal’ This plan will commit money towards renewable infrastructure development and tax incentives for individuals and industry while establishing governmental agencies tasked with battling climate change.
Aug 16 - Biden Signs IRA $18bn over ~10y which includes preventing leasing any federal waters offshore to wind until first making 60 million acres available for oil and gas. WHAT.
Mar 13 - Biden admin approves controversial Willow drilling project. The project (extraction period) will span 30 years , pump 600 million barrels of oil, and produce 258 million mm/t CO2 into the atmosphere. Equiv of ~57mm cars, this damage outpaces all our other climate promises and actions twice over
Using the war in Ukraine as an excuse, Biden WH does a complete 180 on environmental campaign promises, becoming an extremelly pro-oil admin
A conservative scotus came in hot with TWO wins for a liberal administration contending with leftists activists and lawers.
A dysfunctional and gridlocked congress was unable to pass meaningful legislation, watering down key portions of the IRA
The emissions from ONE single project (2023 willow pipe, above) will outpace ALL of our other climate pledges by 200%, rendering them pointless/performative.
The items outlined also present a disturbing example of the executive abusing congress and the judiciary, resulting in three branches that collude together rather than operate as checks and balances.
The DNC has repeatedly done everything in their power to stamp out any hint of progressivism. I lived in New York State for thirty years; the DNC there was a hermetic system run entirely by insiders and even getting progressive ideas discussed was entirely impossible, but this is the norm everywhere.
Remember when Obama got elected, promising "this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal ...", "this" meaning "his election", and then immediately became fossil fuels' best friend ever?
Also, half of us should join the Republican party to change them as well.
Oh, ah, if this was a parody, then sorry for not getting it, it's pretty good.
If it isn't, well, the idea that progressives could infiltrate the RNC and get them to take the climate crisis seriously and not hate dark people, queers, or women - that idea is just batshitinsane.
I joined the democrats back in 2008. It didn't work. They're corporate shills and don't want to help people. I left in 2012 when Obama fulfilled none of his promises and was arguing with Romney over who would give bigger subsidies to corporations.
I'm sure Trump will outdo Biden now that every regulatory agency is likely to be dismantled. And the complete abandoning of any goal on the global stage will also mean many other countries do the same.
And the hilarious part is, they basically had to. BAU/Capitalism demands (under threat of blood) that this was the outcome all along, pedal to the metal, burn everything, consume everything. Greed, Greed, Greed.
There was never an alternative path that wasn't immediately suicidal for all of us. You can't slow this train down without sentencing billions of us to death short term. There simply is not a way to do that where anyone would be in favor of it, because almost none of us at the end of the day would have the courage to face that death.
I understand it. I don't like it, but I understand it.
If I were a billionaire, and I knew that reducing fossil fuel use will change/kill the current civiilzation regardless of it being voluntary or compulsory, I'd vote to keep my mansions. I mean, I hope I wouldn't, that sounds like a jerk thing to do. But humans gonna human.
Basically the idea is that Joe Biden destroyed the Democratic Party's chance by not doing one term and allowing for a candidate to be primaried. Beyond that, by delaying dropping out, he didn't even give the Democratic Party candidate time to campaign.
Really though, its myopic to see it this way. IMO this began with Bill Clinton, and was really put into overdrive with Obama. Both were pro-corporate neoliberals whose policies effectively destroyed the middle and working class. Yes, the Republicans have done that as well (and are even more radical about it).
Trump has won because he speaks a language of power, and he pays lip service to the concerns of a working class that has been fucked. Yeah he's a neoliberal richie who doesn't give a fuck about the working class, but think about his campaign riffing: "Look what they've done to our country. They've ruined our country. They took the greatest economy the world has ever seen and..." Americans can feel the US is broken; Harris's campaign didn't embrace the anger and language of power, didn't as readily acknowledge working class challenges, etc.
The real tragedy is that Donald Trump doesn't care about the working class, and what's coming will be richies just absolutely dominating the countries institutions. The working class will be made to pay every misery for climate change, economic hardship, etc.
I keep saying it but I'll say it again: this result will cause foreign allies (and imperial subordinates, not that I favor imperialism) to stop buying US Treasury Bonds over time. Europeans are already immediately talking about how they need an army; noone trust the US to be a stable partner. The consequence of this is that the US will not be as able to export its inflation or as cheaply service the interest on its debt; the consequence of that will be crushing- especially for the working class that Trump, Elon, et. all will make pay for all of it.
Hard to say really. I'm reminded of a Carlin quote:
It's a big club... and you ain't in it!
The thing that comes to mind for me is that he comes from a series of fancy lad schools: Georgetown, Oxford, and Yale. Neoliberalism has significantly infiltrated higher education. Consider this article.
Also consider Graeber's Utopia of Rules which talks about how people are influenced by bureaucracy, and then consider such bureaucracy in a neoliberal format being legitimized and force fed through the fancy lad schools he attended.
The idea that if the Democrat had fielded [other candidate] that they would have won instead of Trump.
Same thing as happened in 2016 with Sanders. The best part about supporting a candidate that is never in the primary election is that you never have to find out that you were wrong, too.
Climate change is fake they say but we all know climate change believes in you. The far right hates immigrants just wait until the climate warms over the next ten years.
I'm taking the optimistic approach that this means societal collapse will be faster so that we dodge the worst of ecological collapse. Sure, we're all subsistence farming a decade earlier, but maybe everything bigger than a cat doesn't die in the next couple hundred years.
If the Democrats wanted to win they would have run someone more popular. They replayed Hillary's campaign strategy of running to the right and expecting the base to fall in line. The result was the same both times: they didn't pickup the independents they thought they would and significant portions of the base didn't bother to show up. It's been over since the Democratic party abandoned the working class and became a second business party, one for the less openly bigoted economic conservatives. I would say this happened under Bill Clinton to significant degree. All empires turn to fascism in their death throws. The end of American Empire can only be a good thing.
I certainly agree with your first point, the democrats really shat the bed this election. Amd while i agree the death throes of empire lead to fascism there has never been an empire with the military and economic power of the united states. The fallout will be unprecedented. Millions will die and starve.
As part of my job I track business news, for the whole year the wind has been going out of the sails of ESG (and DEI) — investors pulling out, leaders changing tack, companies reversing policies. I wouldn’t say I was certain we were headed in this direction, but the writing was on the wall for corporate climate action at least. Other countries and corporations around the world will adjust to the new paradigm. Just as climate change has accelerated since 2020, climate action is headed backwards. Most people do not realize this is happening.
Pretty much. The robber barons will get to mine mine mine and drill drill drill. We'll likely see the ocean floor destroyed as well. We'll need to have a new climate agreement before the end of the decade that vows not to pass 2°C in warming, because the 1.5°C dream (delusion?) is well and truly dead.
I unfortunetly used to say this during the first Trump admin but I guess it's more relevant now: Americans will choose facism over a reduced standard of living
It's not Friday mods, this American centrism is annoying as fuck, there are real people suffering, caused by this, way afar from this high horse, please delete this, we are not a meme sub.
If you were stuck alone in a vast desert, 3 weeks away from water, a democrat win gets you 1 glass of water. "Better than nothing," but you're still just a few days away from death.
I would not see it this way. Now you are 100% committed to drill baby drill and digging that clean coal.
Before there was at least the proposal to shift to green energy. One can only hope that tsla gets what they ordered while other automakers are not affected
Always thought it'd be interesting to live in the Series Finale of Earth, and it may be much closer than anticipated with this outcome...while watching the Build a Mountain, Joker 2 scene on yt...
Honestly, if you haven't yet, arm yourselves. Express your 2A rights, don't let the other side be the ones with all the guns, because the world's going to get real bleak soon and you'll want protection for yourself and your family when the shit truly hits the fan. Hopefully you'll never need to use it, but it's better to have it and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it. Forget about trying to get one after the collapse, everyone will be hording them by then.
The response to the pandemic was a pretty huge hit to my faith in humanity, but a second Trump presidency (with even more votes than last time) absolutely entombed it in Chernobyl's plant's sarcophagus. I still had a glimmer of hope for the future until yesterday, now I know that the world will continue going to shit until the end.
This is what the majority of the population of the world's number one power (we'll see for how long, at this point) want.
If that's what's going on in the one nation that could have made even a sliver a difference, humanity and the planet in general are well and truly fucked. There is no saving humanity from itself.
We're so proud of the large society we've built. All the technology, science and engineering and whatnot. We think that makes us "special".
But zoom out, like, a LOT. Intergalactic level.
We're likely very not special. Having a brain and limbs with grabbing capacity, and you're probably very likely to make a civilization like ours. It's just a matter of time.
The special part we should be proud of, is taking into account the exponential factor, and our own thinking limitations. We shouldn't have been more than probably a few hundred million.
In conclusion, because we lacked 'something' in our DNA, we were just destined to end up here.
I expected we would get to a fascist state, but I thought it was going to be based on resource scarcity as climate change started to cause more crop failures. Along the lines of "give us power, we will make the potatoes flow again"
I didn't expect we would select fascism just for fun already.
Same old message with the climate peeps. Global cooling became warming, and that became change, as in anything that doesn’t stay constant. Always the end of the world, but here we are. Spoiler alert, we’re gonna be just fine. Go live your life to the fullest and stop doomsdaying.
Do you know what sub you are on? Not to mention theres been consistent data since the 70s about this. The inconsistency came from fossil fuel companies lying to you and you believed it.
The data has most definitely NOT been consistent. All prediction models have been wrong. Climate change itself is in fact real, but not in the sense that politicized sensationalists make it out to be. It is more of a religion than a science, as there are thousands of respected scientific researchers all around the world who reject these doomsday claims. Now man made weather manipulation, on the other hand, is real. Governments have been working on that for decades, although they mostly deny it. Unfortunately climate cultist tend to believe and worship world governments, so most laugh off the idea as a conspiracy theory while they eat the hand fed climate propaganda from the government.
Your own eyes should be able to convince you that this is bullshit. We're the "climate cultists" and we're constantly criticizing the governments, even in this thread. But if you think people are steering hurricanes around there's probably no getting through to you. If you want to know what we actually think, most of us believe that there isn't going to be enough food, because despite CO2 being good for plant growth, heat is not, and storms fueled by more water vapor in the air from higher temperatures will destroy so much that we won't be able to recover from one crisis before the next one starts, much like what happened in Florida last month, until ultimately order breaks down. I don't think thats as crazy an idea as you're assuming.
While climate change (plus the myriad of other issues in the polycrisis) was going to wreak serious, catastrophic havoc regardless of the outcome, something really feels sinister about Trump winning in regard to this. It truly, truly feels like any sliver of hope we had in at least preserving something after whatever collapse brings our way has been wiped.
It would be one thing if it were just the U.S., but where we go so to does the world :(
I would have liked the one where we all burn together.
Instead, I got the one where half will burn the other half (likely including me) in the street like witches because they've been told it will help, before they burn some time later.
You get it. Neither candidate was going to do shit for the environment. Kamala even said in the debate, something along the lines of, "I care about the environment, and we are going to continue to grow our renewables, at the same time we are have the highest oil production rate ever and we will continue this as well."
I was like... hhhhhhhhmmmmmm... so you do care about the environment, or don't?
We're Americans! We have a sense of entitlement a mile long, and demand our hellscape sooner rather than later. Now that the people have spoken, it's time for them to find out.
Hard to convince the masses climate change is a real threat when the ones who spew the most “fear mongering” are the ones buying ocean front properties. Whether you like it or not, people notice this hypocrisy more than they used to.
The conscience in me is huddled in a corner, staring into nothing. The accelerationist in me just sat down on the couch with a big ass bowl of popcorn.
Today, I am so so happy to be collapse aware. I was much more traumatized in 2016 than I am now. I voted for Harris, but I was just voting for a kinder collapse. I knew if she won people's expectations would be too high, and then they would be disappointed in her when things kept going sideways.
Yep, and reverse globalization, slowing the growth of developing economies. Thus increasing poverty and death in poor countries. At the same time shutting down options for migration and encouraging other developed countries to do the same. It's going be a shit time for the 3rd world but it may reduce population and consumption overall I guess...
Slight counterpoint: as the new regime annihilates Americans' standard of living, life expectancy and levels of consumption; fossil fuel pollution (in feeder countries like China) will drop.
Any notions around our willingly reducing consumption or abiding by treaties/agreements have been demonstrated to be riduculous. Companies are still talking about 'net carbon' and we're still eating it up.
The sooner the anthropocene ends, the better for the rest of the biosphere, and it'll be even sooner, now, as we burn every last drop.
We were always going to go on one last carbon binge. The election doesn’t change a thing.
The real problem is the pathological obsession mango man has with trying to dissolve essential scientific agencies that do some of the most important work on earth.
Like, why rant about wanting to dissolve NOAA?
Because he doesn’t like numbers? It’s absurd.

Hi, Frankthetank8. Thanks for contributing. However, your submission was removed from /r/collapse for:
Rule 3: Posts must be on-topic, focusing on collapse.
Posts must be focused on collapse. If the subject matter of your post has less focus on collapse than it does on issues such as prepping, politics, or economics, then it probably belongs in another subreddit.
Posts must be specifically about collapse, not the resulting damage. By way of analogy, we want to talk about why there are so many car accidents, not look at photos of car wrecks.
Rule 7: Post quality must be kept high, except on Fridays. (00:00 Friday – 08:00 Saturday UTC.)
On-topic memes, jokes, short videos, image posts, polls, low effort to consume posts, and other less substantial posts are only allowed on Fridays, and will be removed for the rest of the week.
Less substantial posts must be flaired as either "Casual Friday", "Humor", or "Low Effort".
Clickbait, misinformation, fear-mongering, and other low-quality content is not allowed at any time, not even on Fridays.
Mankind's greatest 'enemy' for the entirety of its existence was mother nature- fighting the elements, fighting disease, fighting fluctuations in the weather that caused droughts and crop loss (in the agricultural era). For a brief moment there was a time when humans seemed to have an upper hand.
Then mother nature snapped back in reaction, leaving mankind and many other species scrambling to survive as the elements and disease once again beat back the population explosion and resource appetites of mankind.
Yeah, well, the fix was in from the start. But good game, Climate. I’m not sure I understand why you chose that image, but it is funny to me. What is he holding?
It still works tho, reading Trumps' future potential policies. That dude must definitely smoke some fire meth daily, I can't otherwise explain such amount of brain damage concentrated in a single person.
Although some of his actions and statements during his first time in office seemed more like he was straight huffing gasoline, especially during covid.
It's a sight to see the basement dwellers and bots all over reddit relishing in their "own the libs". Life's a wheel...your either the top or getting crushed at the bottom.
The following submission statement was provided by /u/Frankthetank8:
This post is collapse related due to the recent usamerican election decision. Donald trump is again the president of the united states and will enact legislation to mine for materials and drill for oil and natural gas, this destroying what little protected land remains and effectively setting in stone our climate extinction. That is if nuclear war doesnt happen first. He will likely destroy the inflation reduction act first which was in my opinion the last fleeting glimmer of hope for humanities fight against climate change. These next four years will be terrible for the united states and have long lasting ripple effects on the rest of the world.

that, and the literal brain damage caused by each covid infection (which many americans are on number 4 and 5 of) is added to whatever bullshit existed beforehand
LilyHex@reddit
I had a conspiracy theory that I joked about that Covid might be like Toxoplasmosis; maybe once you get infected with Covid, it fucks up something in your brain somewhere that makes you take safety precautions, so you're more likely to engage in dangerous behavior and get reinfected with it more and more.
That's wild right? That can't happen, right? Right?

Covid: it's the lead brains crave!

In case of boomers, "bullshit existed beforehand" would include truly awful things such as lead poisoning and Reaganism. At least Gen Z "only" have to deal with microplastics and the forever chemicals.

Human society is a failed experiment.
DougDougDougDoug@reddit
Remarkable disregard for neoliberalism, which is failing world wide. But sure.
AcadianViking@reddit
Where did I disregard neoliberalism?
If you actually attempted some critical thought you'd see that I'm literally explaining the historical context for why neoliberalism became a thing at all.
You think neoliberalism was a thing back when the fucking Puritans landed at apply Plymouth Rock?
jbiserkov@reddit
Memory Refresher: 2016 was during the Obama years.

Bruh. As if China isn’t the same hyper capitalist ethnonationalist fascist death cult wrapped in red
jbiserkov@reddit
I'll be the first one to admit that I don't know enough about China. But from what I've seen their society has a much better social safety net, and is able to lift 800 million out of poverty, invest heavily in public services (like 46 000 km / 29 000 mi of high speed rail which has "attracted passengers from all income levels" according to the Worldbank).
Their international policy projects like the Belt & Road initiative stand in stark contrasts with American imperialism and neo-colonialism.

Unfortunately what seems to be the most likely end to capitalism is also going to be our extinction.

good point. I'm kind of rooting for AI :(
SanityRecalled@reddit
I would take an AI leader programmed to follow Utilitarianism (the morally right action is the one that does the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people) over what we currently have, leaders that think that the morally right action is the one that does the greatest amount of good for the 1%.
Ateshu@reddit
Nah, since 2014 it all went downhill. Covid was just the peak of it( or so we thought)
raeannecharles@reddit
I read on another subreddit that someone said when people were put into lockdown during COVID, they felt like they were belittled, had no control and as though it was almost a personal attack on them. They felt as if time was stolen from them.
As a result, since the pandemic ended, people have become more openly rude, less patient and understanding, aggressive, selfish and entitled. They view this as a way of making up for their imprisonment.
gamesrgreat@reddit
Well let’s not discount that they might have brain damage due to Covid. Might be our generation’s “lead in the gasoline”

I mean, every poll on the planet has shown that the climate/planet is not the #1 priority for any population in the world. Like literally even in the places where you are most affected by climate change, it is like #4-5 priority for people.
Reyhin@reddit
I mean part of that is deliberate. You do need to legitimately seek out information to see how bad the picture truly is, as the news media will never give people the stark truth of how many critical viability markers the earth is staring down.
Even then, when faced with something so insurmountable and uncomfortable, people will want to not think about. Especially with how powerless a normal human is against the issues due to our negligible effect to the scale of the problem, and that we are opposed by some of the powerful people who want to keep business as usual.
jbiserkov@reddit
And most people are too busy working, trying to survive. That also is deliberate.
LilyHex@reddit
All because a comparable handful of people want more than a reasonable "share" and the ability to control people. It's really sick.
There is enough money in the hands of a few people to completely end homelessness and starvation and yet...it doesn't happen. They'd rather do shit like purchase Twitter with it "as a meme."
Cultural-Answer-321@reddit
Exactly. In the U.S. nearly 47 percent of the entire workforce is trying to live on $500 a week or less.
Embarrassed-Luck5079@reddit
While that sounds right do you have a source?
passive_post@reddit
Right, climate change can’t be your number one priority when you’re trying to feed yourself and your family. It’s a much more vague threat in the presence of seemingly insurmountable day to day issues.
misobutter3@reddit
But 8 billion people having food and water is the very much a climate change issue. These two are deeply related.
Arkbolt@reddit
Even after the French revolution most french revolutionaries modeled their fashions after noble social norms.

spasamsd@reddit
At my job, we created an employee group that specifically does sustainability work on top of what the company is already doing. It makes a difference at our campus. If most companies had this, I think it would have a big impact and it only requires a few people to do so.
Obviously it won't fix everything, but people need to understand they have the power to make change happen.
Reyhin@reddit
While I do agree with you that people have the chance to make change, convincing companies 1 by 1 is frankly not a real option, especially when our fundamental system of making everyone work 40 hours plus to drive a growth driven economy is the key driver of our extinction. This is an issue where the distribution of power needs to be completely upended.
Our economic system needs to change to one based on sustainability, resilience, restoration in order to face the brutal climatic impacts we have already guaranteed. The idea of green growth is nothing more than an illusion from the ghouls on top trying to squeeze every last drop of blood out of this beautiful rock we call Earth as they make in unfit for human life
Arkbolt@reddit
Of course. I consider myself a pragmatic degrowther, and part of that is shunning flying whenever possible. But like 90% of the people I meet working in climate policy are like mega-frequent fliers anyways. People, even well informed ones, don't wanna think about it.
Reyhin@reddit
I think that’s where I’m at too with pragmatic degrowth. I’m lucky to live in the NE corridor and have lots of trains to get around with. It is crazy how wasteful this country is with flying, especially when these airlines can’t even survive as real companies and are just glorified credit cards.
Arkbolt@reddit
Forget flying. Even on this "collapse-aware" subreddit, people recoil at the idea that we need to all eat less meat. My example I like to use is my mom who grew up in a communist-era farm without massive energy-intensive supply chains that gave fertilizer, etc. She ate meat once or twice a month AT MOST. She used to tell me how the only animal thing they ate every week was the dozen eggs she shared with the 10 other people in her household.
phriendlyphellow@reddit
I saw a chart recently where it was 22nd. The most critical issue is twenty fucking second.
hybridfrost@reddit
The main story of this election is that anyone who voted for Trump thinks it won’t happen to them. Everyone thinks climate change either won’t be as bad as they say or at least they’ll not be in the path of the next mega-hurricane.
Blue/white collared voters think Trump will save them from the clear future where AI takes most of their jobs. Latinos think they’ll only deport “illegals” but will be anyone who actually be anyone “who “looks like they don’t belong”. White women think that they’ll never be in a position where they need women’s health like contraceptions or to terminate a pregnancy unexpectedly.
Well all those futures just became a lot more likely and will be coming even faster now

are you referencing gaza? Then I got news for you. trump is going to be the worse decision in that regard.
TrickyProfit1369@reddit
"I know we are supporting and aiding a genocide but have you considered Trump bad?"
Logridos@reddit
TrickyProfit1369@reddit
I am pointing out that its Democrats fault for not choosing a better candidate or even trying. And the numbers reflect that - democracy is at stake thats why they choose a dogshit candidate with milquetoast promises?
Logridos@reddit
Yep, a two party system sucks. Unfortunately, this is the system we have, and those are the candidates we have. Not voting for the clearly better option because of a single issue is doing nothing but shooting yourself, the country, and the world in the foot.
taralundrigan@reddit
Interesting_Pause830@reddit
"This is a way more complex topic than just Israel bad. We can understand your frustration but we can not simply intervene and agree to all demands of hamas terrorists. We have to support our ally Israel first and foremost but we will do everything to stop the suffering of any unintentionally involved people" - Dems
"Yeah Ben, glass this place." - Donald
These were the two choices and you managed to pick the worse. Congrats
TrickyProfit1369@reddit
I am not an American. If your two options is glassing gaza and glassig gaza a little less then I dont even blame American voters for refusing to vote for her. She sucks and democrats have noone but themselves to blame. They couldve held a primary earlier, selected an actually competent and likeable candidate but they tried to shove half dead Biden down your throat.
Peak_District_hill@reddit
Blaming leftists for this defeat is ridiculous, Trump ran the battleground states and increased his vote share on 2016, you can’t blame that on leftists who were also leftists in 2016, the wider population chose the candidate they believed would raise their living standards the most, same as it has always been,
Interesting_Pause830@reddit
I am not blaming leftists. I just said poster's logic is completely twisted. And I would say that this whole narrative that dems are driving prices is one of the big successful disinfo campaigns. You could nearly only hear in the media what someone was thinking or interpreting of Harris' words and not the source itself. They really spun the narrative and forgave trump every word. I would not blame the party, I blame the uneducated people
Johnny55@reddit
This might have been an effective argument if the Biden administration did anything to push back on Netanyahu. They did not, which is why no one can ever provide specifics on how Trump will be worse since Biden gave Israel everything they wanted.
Interesting_Pause830@reddit
are you slow? Biden absolutely told Netanyahu to not completely level the thing in the first place. Have you read Netanyahu's statement congratulating trump? That was one of trump's few consistent points, that he will let Israel make fast process in gaza. hahahaha. If you really self mutilated your country over this issue, congrats man.
I mean with Harris there is a chance that you can make proposals and negotiations with her. With dictator on day one you will basically get what he thinks is right. I hope democratically abandoning your democracy for years to come over an issue with a conflict most Americans could not even locate on a world map was worth it.
Johnny55@reddit
Interesting_Pause830@reddit
a) Israel is not killing indiscriminately as far as I can see.

SanityRecalled@reddit
So many doctors without borders have come forward saying how every single day there would be tons of small under 5 year old children with sniper head and chest wounds. The toddlers picking through the rubble of their homes looking for their parents must have been confused for Hamas members when the Israelis start using them as long distance target practice.
Israel can deny access to as many journalists and blow up as many aide workers as they want, in this day and age it's impossible to squash all information coming out of a warzone.
dreal46@reddit
It's another Rep/Libertarian pretending to not hear all the racism when Trump's in the room.
Brullaapje@reddit
The way Trump talks about Muslims should give you a very clear idea about that. I remember him talking about shithole countries and wanting people from countries like Sweden for example.
Johnny55@reddit
Trump's inane ramblings are a lot less meaningful to Muslims than Biden giving Israel the weapons to exterminate their extended families. No one expects Trump to be better, but they are more concerned with what Biden has actually done than what Trump will hypothetically do.
Brullaapje@reddit
It has shown who he is and his regards to minorities. I mean he did start that wall.
Johnny55@reddit
And Biden has shown who he is by helping Israel exterminate Palestinians.
Brullaapje@reddit
Ok? And that changes Trump his stance on minority's how?
Johnny55@reddit
Why are you acting like I'm trying to defend Trump? He's a fascist who will be terrible for minorities. That doesn't change the fact that Biden is the one in power who is tangibly hurting them right now. People are angry about that and they are responding to it. If someone hurts your family you're not going to forgive them just because they tell you someone else would have done the same thing.
Brullaapje@reddit
This is what you wrote yourself.
Johnny55@reddit
And? I see no specifics on how Trump will be worse. They're both awful.
Brullaapje@reddit
He has already done and said worse, that is the point.
Johnny55@reddit
What has he done that is worse? You still aren't providing specifics.
Brullaapje@reddit
I did, go read back (the wall, what said about Muslims).
Johnny55@reddit
You are comparing a wall, on the Mexican border, which both administrations have helped build, to the deliberate extermination of tens of thousands of Muslim civilians. These things are not remotely comparable and this conversation is pointless.
HommeMusical@reddit
Yeah, everyone knows that.

Old-Adhesiveness-156@reddit

Frankthetank8@reddit (OP)
This post is collapse related due to the recent usamerican election decision. Donald trump is again the president of the united states and will enact legislation to mine for materials and drill for oil and natural gas, this destroying what little protected land remains and effectively setting in stone our climate extinction. That is if nuclear war doesnt happen first. He will likely destroy the inflation reduction act first which was in my opinion the last fleeting glimmer of hope for humanities fight against climate change. These next four years will be terrible for the united states and have long lasting ripple effects on the rest of the world.

SanityRecalled@reddit
What do you guys mean by geoengineered? What's the context?
wookie_bikini@reddit
It’s a large-scale intervention to Earth’s natural systems to help counteract climate change.
One of many examples would be using technology to reduce CO2 emissions.
SanityRecalled@reddit
Yeah, I get the general idea, I meant the specifics though. Was there some kind of plan or proposal put forward by someone that I can read up on? Or just a general brainstorming idea?
hysys_whisperer@reddit
One specific proposal I'd to blast a shitload of SO2 into the stratosphere where it will reflect light away and therefore cool the earth.
Another is seeding the oceans with powdered iron to cause algal blooms that soak up CO2, die, and sink to the bottom of the ocean.
wookie_bikini@reddit
SanityRecalled@reddit
Yeah, that's about the same outlook I have at this point. I mean, I honestly didn't have much hope to begin with. I feel like it's just about too late with climate change, and even if we beat that by some miracle, microplastics will still get us in the long run. Now though, things will only get worse and the decline will be sped up in the name of profits. It's truly depressing how little the people in charge around the world care about humanity's only home.
Cyberpunkcatnip@reddit

We know it's not Friday but we're leaving this one up as a venting/processing thread for people in terms of the impact of the U.S. Election on climate policy in the United States.
9chars@reddit
I don't get this attitude at all? The Dem's polices on climate change are just as bad as any other parties? Their policies and legislation barely move the needle either? Neither party cares about climate change.
Bromlife@reddit
Donald Trump has said over and over again that climate change is a hoax. Republicans are lock step with this ideology.
"Democrats aren't perfect" is not a compelling argument vs the tire fire that is the Republicans.
chaseinger@reddit
one party says it's a chinese hoax. the other party acknowledges its reality and doesn't exactly offer many solutions, but passed one of the biggest climate laws ever.
how exactly is that the same?
SallyShortcakes@reddit
I’ll explain it simply for you on the off chance you said that in good faith. Dems would be a status quo slow descent into collapse. What we have now is full foot on the pedal towards whatever is next.
9chars@reddit
They're both the same thing. No party is stopping or slow down climate change. It's disingenuous to post some meme acting like one party is going to make any difference over the other. It's just another form of copium pretending that a political party has some capability to save us. Both are complete abject failures on this matter. The over all intelligence of the group is seriously waning.
SallyShortcakes@reddit

This country is violently fucking stupid.
Renard4@reddit
They're not stupid, they're insanely greedy. Solving climate change implies to somehow exit capitalism, but people, in their infinite wisdom, chose comfort instead. Why make efforts to not shit the bed while you could just own a bigger house to fill it with more junk you need to throw away every few years instead?
Calling them stupid is too easy and missing the point. That's the purpose I guess, there are plenty of greedy people on this sub too, but it won't help address the crisis. What everyone needs to do is own less, have less, and to start repairing your old stuff, some people need to do that more than others for sure but eventually we have to realize that even the middle class in western countries doesn't have reasonable expectations when it comes to standards of living vs what the planet and biosphere can handle.

vand3lay1ndustries@reddit
I remember talking to a native Hawaiian who was protesting the TMT (Thirty Meter Telescope) back in 2014, and I was shocked that he was against scientific progress.
He calmly explained to me that he's not against progress, he's against colonialism. Progress is learning to live in a finite world with finite resources, and he knew that the TMT would just allow humans to eventually colonize other worlds and plunder their resources too.
I get it now, we're a cancer that must be stopped.
HybridVigor@reddit
Jumping from the TMT to interplanetary colonization is a huge leap. I don't see humans ever reaching another star system, and every other environment in the Solar system is less suitable for a colony than under the ocean or in the deep deserts of earth. I love science fiction, but the Great Filter is upon us, and we're not passing through.
vand3lay1ndustries@reddit
Sure, but his logic is still sound.
We shouldn't even be allowed to try, after what we did to our own planet.
JeremyViJ@reddit
TrickyProfit1369@reddit
They will invade Taiwan when seeing western reaction to Ukraine. China is building up its military.
SanityRecalled@reddit
Apparently Taiwan's chip factories are set to wipe everything and all the machines are rigged to remotely self destruct in the event of an invasion. This was stated directly by the chairman of the TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). They'll burn the factories to the ground before they let Winnie get his hands on them.
JeremyViJ@reddit
Correct. Putin has connections in the USA that will now ensure China they can attack Taiwan.
TrickyProfit1369@reddit
I just hope we can militarize fast enough in Europe. We are also turning to extreme right that wants to suck off Putin so I guess there will be peace in the end? Peace.. but a kleptocracy with us workers under heavier and heavier boot?
pajamakitten@reddit
But there are not enough resources for all countries to swap out fossil fuels for green tech. Electric cars are just what we thought hybrids would be twenty years ago. They are just another way for people to consume while feeling smug for thinking they are doing anything meaningful for the planet.
JeremyViJ@reddit
There are enough resources. Copper lithium if there is plenty of the demand for it. The people that pull out 13 million barrels of oil per year out of the ground somehow think it is not possible ?
The issue is that Saudi Arabia and Texas won't be a world powers, it will be Chile and Australia. But the resources are there. Just not in the hands of those currently in power.
Renard4@reddit
Environment is not limited to climate. Climate is merely the tip of the iceberg.

SanityRecalled@reddit
I was going to say we're like lemmings following each other off a cliff, but then I remembered they don't actually do that and the myth comes from an old documentary where the filmmakers actually just threw the lemmings off the cliff to stage it :(
So I guess we're more like cows stampeding off of a cliff, everyone following the people in front of them assuming they know where they're going.
Muugumo@reddit
The awfully ironic thing is that we hate our lives and the modern world, but won't stop fantasizing about paradise and fix what we have. We're depressed, modern jobs suck, relationships suck (the fucking gender war) and the solution to all of this is to accept simpler more modest lives. This also saves the planet, but we won't do it. One of the more common fantasies i've seen, moving to a rural place and having a small farm, would actually help, but more people fantasize about it than doing it.
Renard4@reddit
I don't think the world can sustain several billions small farms. We need cities not to completely consume any available land for agriculture. That being said, we can live in better cities and without jobs in finance.

The US is and has been violent. It had a period of time when it acted civilized, but that door has closed.
ghostcatzero@reddit

PatchworkRaccoon314@reddit
The nice answer: I still have people I care about. I still enjoy speaking for those who are too meek or too nice, even when the problems of the world generally don't affect me. There are things I like to do, things I like to experience, things I like to build and hold and change.
The real answer: It is an undeniable fear of death that is embedded deep in my biology. I have been suicidal since I was about 9 years old; for nearly 30 years now I've lived each year convinced I will not see the next, yet the next always comes. I want to die the same way a meth addict wants to quit, but I am addicted to being alive and can't stop.

This is called "victim blaming".

And the hilarious part is, they basically had to. BAU/Capitalism demands (under threat of blood) that this was the outcome all along, pedal to the metal, burn everything, consume everything. Greed, Greed, Greed.
There was never an alternative path that wasn't immediately suicidal for all of us. You can't slow this train down without sentencing billions of us to death short term. There simply is not a way to do that where anyone would be in favor of it, because almost none of us at the end of the day would have the courage to face that death.

CoyotesOnTheWing@reddit

KingZiptie@reddit
Hard to say really. I'm reminded of a Carlin quote:
The thing that comes to mind for me is that he comes from a series of fancy lad schools: Georgetown, Oxford, and Yale. Neoliberalism has significantly infiltrated higher education. Consider this article.
Also consider Graeber's Utopia of Rules which talks about how people are influenced by bureaucracy, and then consider such bureaucracy in a neoliberal format being legitimized and force fed through the fancy lad schools he attended.

Murranji@reddit
Pretty much yeah. Under current policies we were going to hit 2C by 2043 on average. Trump withdrawing from the Paris agreement will accelerate that.
mercury_pointer@reddit
If the Democrats wanted to win they would have run someone more popular. They replayed Hillary's campaign strategy of running to the right and expecting the base to fall in line. The result was the same both times: they didn't pickup the independents they thought they would and significant portions of the base didn't bother to show up. It's been over since the Democratic party abandoned the working class and became a second business party, one for the less openly bigoted economic conservatives. I would say this happened under Bill Clinton to significant degree. All empires turn to fascism in their death throws. The end of American Empire can only be a good thing.
Frankthetank8@reddit (OP)
I certainly agree with your first point, the democrats really shat the bed this election. Amd while i agree the death throes of empire lead to fascism there has never been an empire with the military and economic power of the united states. The fallout will be unprecedented.

Thought of a new 'metaphor' today.

Same old message with the climate peeps. Global cooling became warming, and that became change, as in anything that doesn’t stay constant. Always the end of the world, but here we are. Spoiler alert, we’re gonna be just fine. Go live your life to the fullest and stop doomsdaying.
Frankthetank8@reddit (OP)
Do you know what sub you are on? Not to mention theres been consistent data since the 70s about this. The inconsistency came from fossil fuel companies lying to you and you believed it.
Lee4819@reddit
Red-scare90@reddit
Pink_Revolutionary@reddit

FieryMairi@reddit
While climate change (plus the myriad of other issues in the polycrisis) was going to wreak serious, catastrophic havoc regardless of the outcome, something really feels sinister about Trump winning in regard to this.
