What stereotypes about us that you guys hear actually hold water and which are just wrong?
ExtremeSour@reddit
SWA - likes to go fast. Cowboy aviators DAL - always with the requests AAL - complains about a minor inconvenience UAL - pretty quiet Citation - slow af G6 - fast af, slow down you’re eating the ass of United in front of you
ltcterry@reddit
ATC made my day once when in a Citation and asked to slow down.!
FlyingPetRock@reddit
I was in a caravan and ATC asked if I could do 180kts for an approach window.
"Unable, I'm in a caravan and we can only do slower."
Slight pause, but when he came back with "maintain 100kts," I could hear his buddy laughing his ass off in the background. Wish I had grabbed it from live ATC.
HLSparta@reddit
I think liveATC keeps recordings for a long time, so it's probably still there if you know the date, time, and frequency it happened.
ExtremeSour@reddit
Probably his trainer calling him a dumbass
av8rix2@reddit
I’ve been asked to slow in my PC-12 a handful of times because I was crawling up on a jet. Best days of my life.
ApprehensiveVirus217@reddit
Flying an OG CJ. Had a departure controller ask me to maintain 250 in the climb on a hot summer day, fully loaded.
“Unable, best I can give you in the climb is 200”
“NXXXXX say type code, they put you in here as a jet by accident”
“C525… we’re a jet”
“Oh… uh…. Best forward speed then. I can’t assign you lower than 250”
Feels bad man.
Can_Not_Double_Dutch@reddit
Delta- always a wind check on final. Seriously, you can't read it off your instruments
ntilley905@reddit
What airplane has instruments that show you surface wind while you’re still in the air? Other than the ATIS which is probably 58.5 minutes old?
ywgflyer@reddit
It's called the Slowtation for a reason.
Big-Source9972@reddit
That pilots are fat, a lot are, but there are plenty who are super into health and fitness
extremefuzz777@reddit
I don't think I've heard a stereotype for pilots that I haven't seen in some form or another, and not just in one-off instances. I'm talking reoccurring behaviors that I've seen from people. Now most will not display these things, but there's still enough of it happening that these things definitely hold water.
-The big joke of pilots making it known that they are pilots is a thing. You'll always have the low time student who can't stop bragging and the airline pilot who just loves wearing the hat.
-Promiscuity among pilot I've seen several times, particularly among younger pilots. What stands out to me here is that these pilots take full advantage of flying to different cities on a daily basis.
-All pilots go through at least one divorce. This becomes more prominent when you get to the majors, but holy shit most guys I fly with have been divorced at least once. I have theories as to why, but still this is definitely a thing.
Edging_King_1@reddit
What are your theories? I’m not in the aviation industry but I’m oddly curious of the reasons are that pilots get divorced so often
extremefuzz777@reddit
One common factor with out professions and one behavior I noticed specifically in the airlines. The first one is that we're just away from home so often that it puts a strain on relationships. That same thing happens with military, medical, and others who's jobs keep them from home.
The other is built upon what I said above, but some pilots make that time gap even worse. You only get so many days off a month, so you need to make the most of them. Pilots, especially those in the majors, are very driven career-wise. They spend their time at corporate jobs and regionals working themselves to the bone to get the time they need to move on. At the majors they can finally take a breath and enjoy their time off...except many of them don't. They look at the paycheck and work to make that number bigger, they take every overtime trip they can, and they keep working not realizing what kind of affect its having on their families.
I'm just about at my first year into my current company. The amount of people I've had giving me advice saying "you can make more as a first year FO than a CA makes". It's like, yeah if you spend all your time at work and do nothing on the homefront. But that's the mentality a lot of people have. Keep working and make money. When I talk to these same guy about their divorce its always the same excuse. "They just grew apart" or something like that when really they intentionally spend all their time at work and neglected their relationships. This job is already hard on the family, but a lot of guys make it worse for a better paycheck.
Edging_King_1@reddit
Thanks for responding. As someone about to start flight training in a month, this is something I’ve given a lot of thought. I can guarantee that I’ll be the best partner I can be so what really worries me is my future wife cheating on me while I’m flying. How often do you think that happens?
extremefuzz777@reddit
I mean, it probably happens, but I don't think that particular scenario is too rampant. If it is I just haven't seen it. Honestly try to find a girl with strong relationship values and make sure she understands the nature of our job. It helps when their job helps them understand (healthcare workers for example get it very well). The rest is on you to put in the extra effort.
dood8face91195@reddit
Well think about someone in the military actively. They’re gone frequently, don’t have a lot of in person time with their spouse, and have pretty much every temptation and opportunity to cheat or do something the other doesn’t approve of.
That in of itself is a stereotype but you get the point. I see a life ahead of me where I doubt I’ll have time to set down roots and really start a family unless something is really convenient or I find someone who would love me and stay faithful despite that kind of lifestyle. Same goes for me too.
Mispelled-This@reddit
#4 is probably a side effect of #3.
AlpacaCavalry@reddit
Pilots love free stuff!
I mean who doesn't? But pilots do seem to materialise out of nowhere to take advantage of randomest free things if you leave them out in the open.

The less experienced the pilot, the more they wanna tell you about it. Nobody is louder about being a pilot than a 3.2TT student.

Laxboarderchill@reddit
Some time ago, a Reddit hero was bragging that he could hover a helicopter with only 1TT, rightfully ripped apart by the masses

Thanks for bringing back this joker's story. As an ex helicopter pilot, I really got a good laugh out of it.

Cloudbrain13@reddit
Please tell me you’ve seen the story about the guy who introduced himself to his wife’s friends as a pilot because he logged so much time in MSFS. In reality he manages a fast food joint.
I think about this guy way too often
jdeck01@reddit
Memory of that post very randomly popped into my head a couple days ago, for no good reason.
I still can’t decide if that guy was trolling or serious. Had to be trolling, right?
woop_woop_pull_upp@reddit
Omg, where is this story?
srbmfodder@reddit
I'm just trying to tread water and do a good job. I just switched airplanes, and my partner was a captain upgrade when we were in training for the new airplane. He was a prior Viper driver, and sometimes he talked really fast. I had to have him repeat what he was saying a few times, and finally I said look man, I flew helicopters, you flew F-16s, you have to understand I flew at least 1/4th the speed you did, and I think about that fast too. Then he got it. He was a really nice dude.
woop_woop_pull_upp@reddit
Lol amazing. Reminds me of that balloonist that came around here claiming it was an extreme sport or something like that, because he could climb faster than a 172.
Dinosaur_Wrangler@reddit
That was special.
Headoutdaplane@reddit
There was a student pilot in the pattern that made a beech 1900 go around twice. Then he asked the beech's position, the beech replied left downwind about a mile off the centerline. The student replied " the correct downwind is a 1/4 mile from the centerline"
Kudos to the 1900 pilot that just didn't reply.
Mithster18@reddit
What's that effect/phenomenon where someone with very little information thinks they're an expert on the subject, because they know so little?

Dunning-Kruger effect, although I reckon I’m springing a trap by answering this!

Airline pilots are just getting laid left and right. That was in the 80’s. And those pilots are now on their third ex wife. Been in the airlines for 5 years now. The only times I’ve been hit on is by my wife and the boys
woop_woop_pull_upp@reddit
I don't know man. Still quite the incestuous orgy in my experience.
bignose703@reddit
Depends on the airline, really.
TheRauk@reddit

woop_woop_pull_upp@reddit
Honestly, I don't think so. It's not an airline thing, its a young pilots and young FA thing. Something every airline has plenty of, specially these days. I stay away from it as I'm not willing to risk my relationship nor career over some casual fun. But hear plenty of stories and even shown pictures of all the craziness going on.
At one point there was an outbreak of a particular STD that spread throughout the pilots and FAs like wildfire. It was so common that someone actually made a name for it that rhymed with the name of the airline.

Pilots sure do bitch a lot given how good they have it in life with work schedule and pay. Just wait till you have a trip with the grey-haired skipper who loses his shit when the hotel van took 16 minutes instead of the usual 8 minutes because there was a wreck on the highway.
buriedupsidedown@reddit
I honestly think some of the bitching comes from the way we’re paid. When something goes “wrong” or strays from normal operation and has to be solved, it’s not on the clock which means we are not being paid extra. I’ve had to wait 2 hours for a hotel when company said they booked it when they didn’t. I would have been very quiet had I been paid for that time. Instead it goes into duty which didn’t matter.
aviatortrevor@reddit
It's because they have never had a real job in their entire life. They don't know how corporations treat their non-unionized workers.
buriedupsidedown@reddit
I honestly think a lot of the bitching comes from the way we’re paid (not all, but a lot). When something goes “wrong” or strays from normal operation and has to be solved, it’s not on the clock which means we are not being paid extra. If the vans late, or the planes broke, or another plane is delayed and it was a hard hourly, I think there’d be complaining but less of it.
AlpacaCavalry@reddit
This is what I've found as well. Guys who don't moan a lot tend to have other life experiences that they can compare our job to, being very general here.
srbmfodder@reddit
Dude this is what I lay out when I have someone bitching up a storm. I worked in an office for 15 years making half of what I make now (and I have plenty of room to go up, I didn't in my office). Imagine having to go to your boss and tell them you deserve a raise, and then explaining why, and them simply saying no. Or making you prove it. Also, you have no idea what your peers make because everyone is scared to talk about it.
evgtfhh@reddit
I actually saw a complaint where I work that someone requested a new room because the bed didn’t meet their standards
Cambie777@reddit

There’s a bunch of em at my airport, including my instructor. Dude is always rambling about the end times and numerology. Some of the numbers on the secondary comm burned out and the guy was blaming it on “rapid firing of 5, 6, 9, 11’s” and ATIS should have more accurately reported wind at 169.11° not 170°. New World Order comprised of the elite of the elites who dictate what happens in the world. Satanic cabals feeding on the blood of newborns. Adrenochrome. The tides of Communism eroding the USA which will lead to a global collapse…

Anything to do with failed relationships is true. I’ve flown with a ton of guys who are divorced. Once had a jumpseater who turned the flight into an echo chamber for bitching about wives with the captain I was flying with and it was actually pretty sad. I suspect it has to do with being away from home becoming an excuse to stop addressing issues at home. Just builds up resentment over time and gets to a breaking point. Don’t be that guy.
