The weekend between November and December
Muswell42@reddit
When was 12 days before a thing? I was raised "up on Christmas Eve, down on Twelfth Night".
BeatificBanana@reddit
Christmas eve :( that's insane to me! I'm not a fan of "Christmas creep" and there is definitely such a thing as decorating too early (I don't understand people who start putting the decorations up the second halloween is over, I think I'd end up getting sick of Christmas before the day even arrives). but Christmas eve is so late imo, you wouldn't have any time at all to enjoy the pretty decorations and get excited for the run up to Christmas.
Muswell42@reddit
The run up to Christmas is what Advent calendars are for. You have a bit of a buildup from the annual showing of "The Snowman" early on Christmas Eve, then Christmas itself smacks you in the face when the choirboy soloist sings "Once in Royal David's City" at Carols from Kings. Much more concentrated and effective.
SkipMapudding@reddit
Same when I was a child. Christmas shopping was never done months in advance either. Now I put the tree up one or two weeks before Christmas. Still take it down on twelfth night but I think I’m the only person in the neighbourhood that does. Lots of people take theirs down after Christmas dinner. I suppose if your tree has been up for a month you’re bored of it by then.
pajamakitten@reddit
Nothing wrong with being prepared though. It beats rushing around the last week of December along with everyone else.
SkipMapudding@reddit
Never said there was anything wrong with it. I just think when I was a child the run up to Christmas didn’t last for months so to me it was more exciting.
Even-Tomatillo-4197@reddit
Whoever has the energy to take down their tree after Christmas dinner is not doing Christmas dinner properly! Aren’t you supposed to be in a food coma for the rest of the night? Whilst still trying to stuff in an extra after eight or quality street??
Or is that just me
SkipMapudding@reddit
I’m with you - I can barely move after my dinner.
liseusester@reddit
Same here. Christmas cards would go up on the bookshelves, but the decorations and tree only went up on Christmas Eve. I still do this, actually.
Intruder313@reddit
When I remember to get IT down from atop my kitchen cupboards but not until at least mid December
Optimal_Tension9657@reddit
Sometime next week. I need a bit of fun and light in my life at the moment.

December
Acciocomments@reddit
When the first Celebrations/Quality Street/Roses tins hit the shops. Only joking - think that was August this year! Mine will go up this month though - possibly weekend after this one - we tend to be busy most or all weekends in December with various family members/ Christmas Parties etc so it would never get done if we left it until then. I love putting up the decorations - many have been gifts from friends or family or inherited from family members who have passed - they all bring back lovely memories. My husband and I also buy a new bauble or two each year which have memories tied to them too.
cosmicpisces82@reddit
I put mine up today 😂
Reasonable_Voice1971@reddit
I put up mine on the 1st because why not
Acciocomments@reddit
Ours will be up sometime between the 14th and 18th November as we have some holiday and it takes a while! Also, we’re always busy most weekends in December so we don’t really have time then. I love Christmas!
Lunaspoona@reddit
Whenever I'm in the mood to. Could be 1st Dec, could be Christmas eve, could be in August.
decentlyfair@reddit
Two or three days before Christmas and down New Year’s Day
Indigo-Waterfall@reddit
Weekend before Christmas. They stay up until the 12th day of Christmas.
For me the fact they are up for a short period of time is what makes them special and magical.
lalalaladididi@reddit
Man that's insane. More evidence of people leading empty shallow lives.
Ours go up in December. Come down by the 12th day.
WebDevWarrior@reddit
As soon as Halloween ends.
It’s as Jack skeleton would have wanted.
atomic_mermaid@reddit
First week of December. I always host a party second week, I need it to be giving festive when they come round.
The-Ginger-Lily@reddit
Last weekend in november/first weekend of December My birthday is november 28th so it's always after that
cbaotl@reddit
Usually the first weekend in December, be that 1st December or 6th December.
My parents family are 23rd December people which makes me sad
plasticface2@reddit
At Christmas time.
Funnily enough.
Vampirero@reddit
Decorating the Christmas tree is a big annual tradition for our mum, and therefore our family. It's usually around 12 days before, or whenever my mum can get her kids (and now grandkids) together for the evening. She thinks the earlier it is, the less special it becomes. We always have nice drinks, nibbles and music playing. Sounds a bit sad, but it's a nice tradition and we enjoy it.
st2826@reddit
For my birthday at the end of november
SleepyWelshGirl@reddit
Mine will go up over the next 2 weeks. Whenever makes you happy is the simple answer! Life is hard and short, if putting your tree up in October makes you happy do it! I used to do the first weekend of December but it makes my kids happy having it up in November so why not! A bit of joy is surely a good thing! We are catholics too, so are fully on board with the religious side of Christmas.
Agreeable_Fig_3713@reddit
12 days before. Sometimes 11 if I can’t be fucked
diamondthedegu1@reddit
I base it on the fact that Christmas decor does not need to be up for any longer than a month in total. Then I consider the fact that the 12 days of Christmas is December 25th - January 5th.
So, the decor needs to be removed by January 6th at the latest. Therefore, mathematically, December 6th is the date to put up the decor, where you will remove them exactly one month later.
pissflapgrease@reddit
I don’t
Inkblot7001@reddit
First week of December.
Not even mince pies before then.
LaraH39@reddit
Traditionally it should be advent. That's 4 Sundays before Xmas so this year it should be December 1st.
I think last year it was the 28th?
Then they come down on the 12th
LaraH39@reddit
December 1st
MaggieMay-80@reddit
Whenever my better half brings them down from the attic.
BeanOnAJourney@reddit
I didn't even bother putting mine back in the attic, they've been on the landing under the hatch since I took them down in January 🙃
BeanOnAJourney@reddit
Usually a few days before my birthday, which itself is eight days before Chritsmas, but occasionally, in the past, I've left it until Christmas Eve.
afungalmirror@reddit
Can't be arsed.
EquivalentNo5465@reddit
Honestly, I love being surrounded by sparkling prettiness and whimsy whilst it's cold, damp, dark and miserable outside so they go up the 1st weekend of December (even I can't bring myself to do it in Nov) and take them down a couple of weeks after Xmas. There's nothing quite like trudging home from the train station in the cold and rain after a long day at work and seeing your warm and welcoming home lit up with beautiful lights. I've got child 1 on "turning the lights on before mummy gets home" duty when I'm in the office
cat_socks_228@reddit
Last year I had them up on the 1st and down on the 26th. Year before was the 4th and think it was January before they came down
TheRealMrs_Claus@reddit
I would have them up now but my husband is 100% opposed. So they’ll go up on December 1 and come down sometime in January.
Miketroglycerin@reddit
About a week into Decemeber. I love having the decorations up, but when they're up for too long it ruins the magic, it stops feeling like a special occasion.
katie-kaboom@reddit
Not before December, definitely.
MonsieurGump@reddit
There are 12 days of Christmas, none of which are in November.
Delicious-Cut-7911@reddit
I start decorating the house around the 12th and the tree on the 18th. Comes down 2nd Jan.
sarahc13289@reddit
The first week of December it all goes up, it might be the last weekend of November because my partner is away that weekend this year now I’m thinking on it.
I take them down by the 6th.
My neighbour has had outside lights up since September. They’re coloured though and not overtly Christmassy so might be explained as ‘winter lights’, they’re also in her back garden around her shed so I’m letting that slide.
icecoldchimptoes@reddit
No set date, just whenever I can be bothered to 🤷♀️ but if it’s too early I’ll get sick of it before Christmas 😑
sleepyprojectionist@reddit
I’m single, childless, live alone and I am exceptionally lazy. The last time I put up decorations was in a shared house around twelve years ago.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Traditionally we get the Christmas boxes down from the attic the closest weekend to 1st December, which looks like it may be the 30th Nov this year. I always thought the 12 days was how long after Christmas you leave decorations up (and it becomes bad luck after that?). You do what you like otherwise.
Gasblaster2000@reddit
Couple of days before
P33ph0le@reddit
Normally in first week or so of December. If it were up to my 4 yr old, it'd be now. If it were up to my stepdad, it'd be never 😂
WitShortage@reddit
Up on the first weekend in December. Down sometime between Christmas & New Year
kat13gall@reddit
Outside lights and advent decorations on the 1st, tree around the 14th. All down by 12th night.
PatserGrey@reddit
Usually around xmas. It's November now i.e. nowhere near
Spirited-Okra-9151@reddit
Just been to ASDA and they're already playing Mariah; so whenever you want I suppose 🤷🏻
books-cows@reddit
They go up the first weekend in December. Then come down on the 12th day after Christmas
piggies1066@reddit
When at Uni, mid Nov so we have Xmas vibes while together and is all taken down in Jan when we're back. When I go home, it's either when I get home in Dec or around the 20th Dec on average. Normally stays up about half of Jan 😅 if no one can be bothered to put it all away.
nickmasonsdrumstick@reddit
Up 1st of December (keeps my daughter happy) and gone on boxing day.
grubbygromit@reddit
The weekend around the 16th. Then we do the 12 days of Christmas
pajamakitten@reddit
This year: 1st December. Normally, it will be the first Sunday before/of December, depending on what the date of the first Sunday in December is.
ThereAndFapAgain2@reddit
I don't, my missus does but she usually puts them up on the 1st of December and takes them down on new year's day.
Ok_Onion7335@reddit (OP)
My only job is putting the star on top of the tree lol ours come down new years day aswell
ThereAndFapAgain2@reddit
Yeah, I usually also either put the tree up if we use the fake one, or go pick up the real one and set it in place.
Last year though, she wanted two trees, we have a large hall by the front door, and she wanted one in there so people would see it as they enter the house, so we got a big real one there that the stairs kind of wrap around which was actually pretty fun and made the whole house smell Christmasy. She also had me put up a fake one in the lounge.
Other than that, though, she loves doing all the decorations herself, she says I ruin it when I have tried to help her lol
royalblue1982@reddit
The tradition in our family is 2 weeks before. But I'll be travelling home from the 20th, so seems a bit of a waste to only have decorations up for just over a week.
EatingCoooolo@reddit
First weekend of December.
thatcambridgebird@reddit
I’ve got a 7 and 5 year old, so any later than the first weekend in December and it’s absolute mutiny unto they’re done! Before kids, we used to go for roughly mid December or so. We don’t really have a set removal date for taking them all down, except it has to be before 5th jan because that’s my other half’s birthday and decs from Christmas are banned then
Al-Calavicci@reddit
Here’s a thing, every year people say the Christmas decorations go up earlier, if that were actually true they’d be up when Easter was done with by now.
Snickerty@reddit
Yule through to 12th night. So 21st through to 6th January.
Voodoopulse@reddit
Around the 8th of dec, come down on the first of jan
Accurate_Prompt_8800@reddit
Sometime in the first week of December.
This conversation is had every year lol. People put them up whenever they feel like, there’s no set rule.
knight-under-stars@reddit
When the kids were younger we used to put them up on the first Sunday of Advent. Now though they go up at some point on a Sunday in December when we are all around to do it.
They come down on the 27th.
