NASA Warns Arctic Permafrost’s Hidden Threat to Global Warming
Posted by Ok_Mechanic_6561@reddit | collapse | View on Reddit | 72 comments
New NASA-supported research shows how the warming of the Arctic permafrost will release greenhouse gases that will fuel climate change in the coming decades. For centuries, it has preserved twice the amount of carbon currently in the atmosphere, stretching from Alaska to Siberia. But as the Arctic continues to warm at a rate between two and four times the global average, the permafrost is changing from a sink to a source of greenhouse gases.
retro-embarassment@reddit
If it threatened global warming, wouldn't that be a good thing? Global warming is bad, right?
Holosynian@reddit
Well, this type of NASA study will now be probably banned so no data, no problem ! 🥴
BayouGal@reddit
You mean no more NASA. Space program will be overseen by Space X now, for profit.

Thats ok because the right’s attacks on education over the last few decades have churned out fewer and fewer young adults prepared to learn all that sciency stuff. Learning is for nerds and liberals, apparently.

So will education, police, fire departments, the forest service, everything that can be privatized by the political donor-class.

Privatized police. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Project 2025 is a go, so expect NOAA to suddenly go dark in the near future.
Bluest_waters@reddit
The plan is to monetize NOAA. so the plebs won't get the real info, it will all be disseminated thru the billionaire owned media. filtered and edited for for your safety.
Hilda-Ashe@reddit
This reeks of the insurance industry's equivalent of insider trading. The elites get all the data that matter, plebs like you and I are kept in the dark and fed shit.
Kiss_of_Cultural@reddit
Already the case. The rich and powerful never stopped requiring covid testing of their inner circles. The news doesn’t talk about the hundreds of studies showing how royally fucked we are as a species from repeat covid infections. At this point Im just bracing for impact as death by climate, disease, starvation, and fascism come rushing for us.

Some basic information on permafrost.
The permafrost region. Is about 22% of the exposed land area in the Northern Hemisphere.
In the High Arctic (above 66°N) the permafrost zone consists of the Boreal Forests and the ground permafrost. The permafrost area of the Tibetan Plateau (the 3rd pole) is not wooded.
There is NO Permafrost older than about 750,000 years in the NH. It wasn’t until just 800,000ya that the Earth cooled down enough for PERMANENT Permafrost Zones to form.
750,000 years of Organic Carbon have ACCUMULATED in the Permafrost Zone. In fact, the “Boreal Zone” has functioned as a carbon sink for so long that if you burned all of the oil available in all the reserves around the world, you would still release less carbon than the boreal forest and permafrost is currently holding.
The organic matter once trapped on ice suppresses an estimated amount of organic carbon around 1,672 gigatonnes. Which is equivalent to all of the organic carbon contained in ALL of the land plants on the WHOLE planet PLUS what’s in the atmosphere at this moment.
A gigatonne is 1,000,000,000 tonnes, and is often used when discussing human carbon dioxide emissions. This is roughly the mass of all land mammals (other than humans) in the world. It’s also roughly 2X the mass of all of the people in the world.
THERE IS ENOUGH ORGANIC CARBON IN THE PERMAFROST TO INCREASE THE ATMOSPHERIC CO2 LEVEL TO ABOUT 1300PPM, not counting the CO2 released by the burning of the Boreal Forests.
Half of this frozen organic matter is found in the first 3 meters of the permafrost and the remaining is in deposits that extend up to 30 meters deep.
Yedoma permafrost in North East Siberia is rich in organic carbon, being responsible for one-third of the total organic carbon on Earth (Altshuler, Goordial, & Whyte, 2017). It is the FASTEST warming area of the planet, having warmed +7°C since 1979.
The Yedoma permafrost deposits ALONE could raise atmospheric CO2 levels by around +400ppm. Again, that’s ON TOP OF the CO2 that the BURNING of the Northern Boreal Forests is going to add to the atmosphere.
We worry about the Amazon and forests in Indonesia, but the Boreal Forests hold more Carbon than all the other forests in the world combined.
As the Earth’s largest above-ground “pool” of carbon, forests play a critical role in regulating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Spanning 1.3 billion acres, the Boreal Forest is the Earth’s largest terrestrial carbon storehouse, storing around 700–800 billion tons of carbon.
The main tree species, depending on the length of the growing season and summer temperatures, varies across the world. The taiga of North America is mostly spruce, Scandinavian and Finnish taiga consists of a mix of spruce, pines and birch, Russian taiga has spruces, pines and larches depending on the region, while the Eastern Siberian taiga is a vast larch forest.
The tree species that dominate Canada’s vast boreal forest, are black spruce and poplar. While the Canadian boreal forest is VAST (2.7 million sq km) unfortunately it is not a “diverse” forest.
While the trees are well equipped to withstand the harsh northern winters. The same traits that give them an advantage in the cold make them poor candidates to survive in a warming world.
These findings are painting a picture quite different than the long-held assumption that climate change would benefit the northern forests. They suggest a “double whammy” effect in which the burning forests ADD CO2 to the atmosphere and then REMOVE less CO2 from the atmosphere because they are dying.
As more southern tree species, like maple, are predicted to migrate northwards, they will find the harsh environment, low light conditions, and thin soils of the boreal forest hostile to their presence. This means that the void left behind by retreating boreal species will not be easily replaced in a warmer world.

TuneGlum7903@reddit
Let’s be REALLY CLEAR about this. It’s TOO LATE to do anything about this without attempting GEOENGINEERING the Climate System. Probably using SOx aerosols to increase the planetary ALBEDO to reflect more sunlight away from the planet.
James Hansen, and the team of climate scientists who work with him, are calling for a HUGE build out of nuclear power plants AND a global program to “turn the sky WHITE” with sulfate particulates. In conjunction with a CRASH effort to slash Global CO2 emissions as quickly as possible.
By their reckoning, “It’s the ONLY plan that has a chance of working and preserving our civilization.”
Anything short of that, “is just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic while we wait for the ship to go down”.
However, we don’t have much TIME.
The Boreal Forests are already BURNING. If we don’t stop it, they will add about +150ppm of CO2 to the atmosphere. AS EARLY AS 2050.
At which point it will truly be “Game Over”.
reubenmitchell@reddit
Thank you again Richard. I hope there is an alternative source for the information you share so well when Trumpf pulls the plug on NOAA. Are there any European or Asian satellites that can produce this data? Like others here, I'm convinced this is one of the first things he will kill off in order to hide the true state of decay. We have 6-8 month's left by my reckoning.
loco500@reddit
So it's only matter of time until it all starts picking up speed even more...the 2030s are going to be a nightmare scenario. But if we don't think about it, then the problems might solve themselves apparently...All we need are concepts of plans will be fine...

It always has been, but with certain events that have happened in the United States just a few hours ago, now our fate is sealed. Not only will the status quo keep going on, but it will accelerate all for profit and profit alone. 200+ species a day are going extinct, and it will only keep speeding up now. The forests are burning, but it will only accelerate more. The coral reefs are dying, and it will bleach faster. More leases on federal lands to extract and produce more fossil fuels will most likely increase, and only make warming happen faster and faster until our extinction.
These tipping points, some of which have already occurred has already started the loop. But the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation will be the deadliest out of all of them. And now, that a certain person has been elected, this deadly tipping point which will have global consequences, and will now be more of a certainty. This is how it ends folks, I’m not even mad or sad, I’ve just come to accept not only our collapse but our extinction as well.

“Hidden”, as in there wasn’t reports on its fast thawing for more than a decade by now. And it is something that can be seen, as the sinkholes in Russia’s tundra. I would be more worried about underwater frozen methane in those regions, that are not so trivial so spot and can potentially emit more.
