Yeah, here in CA none of the rest of the country's petro-economics really apply. The shale boom that's made the US a net exporter of petroleum and its products has no effect on CA because there are no pipelines into the state and the state government will never allow any to be built. As a result we basically buy most of our oil from the Persian Gulf states and refine it in-state. Add in a legislature which thinks it can make poor people buy $50k electric cars by heavily taxing the gasoline they need to drive their 94 Honda Civic to their $15/hr job, and you get the insanity we live in.

In 2020 not one of over fifty voter fraud court cases was adjudicated where evidence was presented in court. They each were dismissed for lack of standing. Thus, there was no voter fraud was confirmed. Fine. But dismissing the court cases doesn't mean voter fraud did not occur.

To me it does not make sense that, last month there was record voter turnout for early voting and, through antidotal observations, citizens and poll workers stated they'd never seen as long of lines on election day, this election failed to have record voter participation.

I've concluded that the 2020 voting totals were likely not accurate.

The media got excited by all the interest in early voting, and assumptions were made that voter turnout on Election Day would be correspondingly high. Apparently not as many were interested in Harris as President as some of us were hoping.

I have been checking. And I didn’t MAIL it. I put it in a collection box BEFORE ELECTION DAY- like everyone else who didn’t want to take the chance of having it get lost in the mail. Like I’ve done for every election without incident.

I feel pretty comfortable that my life won't be affected all that much, but I can no longer be bothered to care about people who won't even act in their own best interests. I'm going to focus on my family and friends and local community; the rest will unfold the way it does.

It will suck to not get social security or medicare, but I never really thought it would exist when I was ready to retire anyways. It will be a much harder burden on others though, many of whom supported Trump. When they start deporting random people with latino sounding names, I'll send thoughts and prayers. When young people no longer get student loan forgiveness, I will play the world's smallest violin. When women can't get reproductive care, maybe you should've voted for that.

On this one point, it may be as simple as enough people believed he was wrongly convicted. That the prosecution of the case(s) was politically motivated. That the conviction would be/should be overturned on appeal, which due to time constraints, could not be completed before the election, rendering the conviction a non-factor. Or (probably less likely) that even if conviction was just, it was not disqualifying.

I told my partner in 2008, and again in 2016 that, while I genuinely liked Hillary Clinton and would happily vote for her in the general election, I would not vote for her in the primary. This country has not begun to grapple with our misogyny to nearly the same degree as we have with our racism, and we are still pretty racist. So I believed that the electorate, writ large, would not show up to vote for a woman even in the face of a clearly inferior candidate. They would find other reasons that were more comfortable to tell themselves, but in the end, she wouldn't win.

GenX didn't put Trump in office any more or less than any other generation did. The "stats" going around don't include raw data, more glaringly, don't accurate represent Gen X.

The stats claim that those between 45 and 64 voted 53% for Trump.
GenX, when it comes to statistics, is between 1965 to 1981, which puts the ages between 43 and 59.
That means anyone aged 60 through 64 are under the Boomer generation, which makes that "53%" not a true representation of how GenX voted.

Once you consider statistical errors (you know, the whole "2.1% 19 times out of 20" that's included in statistical analysis), all generations are responsible for Trump being in the Whitehouse.

I watched Tianamen Square with tears in my eyes, inspired by the people willing to die for a chance at democracy.

I have always believed fiercely in the American experiment. I have always believed in my fellow Americans.

For the first time in my life, I am ashamed to be an American. We have abdicated our duty to our country's founding ideals. We have let down the entire world. I will never be able to look a Ukrainian or Taiwanese in the eye.

It's always been a curse!

Everyone that grew up in the 80s-early 00s lived through arguably the best time in history (at least those us us on this side of privilege).

We expected things to just keep getting better, because that's what practically all of our culture taught us.

We learned that being famous means you matter, and nearly none of us are famous. We were told we would be better-off than our parents, just like they were; but most of us aren't.

We were told democracy could solve our country's problems, but we have watched that fail spectacularly.

We got spoiled. The boomers were right, but not for the reasons they thought. It's the only explanation I see for why it took SO LITTLE for us to embrace authoritarianism.

Also social media.

And we stopped learning about how the Nazi's came to power. When I was a kid, the teachers still talked about the danger of good men doing nothing. I remember thinking a couple of my teachers thought the 'Three Rs' were Reading, Writing, and Resisting Fascism.

Then we forgot. We stopped warning kids that it could happen here.

The idea that this is a cycle that repeats every 4-5 generations is makes more and more sense to me. Could anything have been done or is this is just how it goes with apes who think they're angels?

Gender politics and identity and equality and everything inbetween and on the other side has been a big issue for A LONG TIME. We all know this. But in the last 25 or so years, there have been so many gains in such a positive way that almost feels like it happened overnight. Obviously, many people dont feel that way, that it's been a long hard fought path, which is true, and lets be honest, there's still a long way to go.

In 2017, the #Me Too movement shook the world and upended a lot of shit, which was a very good thing. But one of the worst things that came out of it was the new world-wide boogey man: The "straight, white man". Oooooooooohhhhhhhh, scary.

In my lifetime, i've seen the boogey man be the Germans, the Japanese, then the Russians, the Taliban - most of the Middle East if we're honest, and now the only perpetrator of any and all of the evil in the world, going all the way back to COLONIALISM - oooooooohhhhh, scary, is the straight white man. Pure evil, toxic, misogynist, against everything the world stands for etc, etc, etc. At least thats what we're being told by the Neo Feminist movement.

We're told that we have no part or place in polite society moving forward. We're useless, stupid, unwanted and just fuck off outta here. Young boys and men are being told that every single instinct they have is disgusting and crude and all of it. And then, of course there's the whole LGBT thing, where it's not enough to be totally fine with it, even voting for the right to marry, you must embrace and love it and move out of the way for them, and respect pronouns and everything.

There will always be haters, that will never change. You can never please all the people all the time. But you're asking too much, and as a result you've pushed a great many people to the right and thats exactly what happened yesterday in America, and you see it emerging everywhere. Have been for some time now.

The base, simplistic message was during this election was: Admit you, as a man are shit, men can be women and compete against actual women in sport, and suck a dick, OR vote for Trump. And the majority of people, overwhelmingly spoke and said enough is enough. You've forced this and this is what breaking point looks like.

I dont like it, I think the world is about to go through a metamorphosis that I dont think is going to go very well for the way of life we've had for the last nearly 80 years. It's definitely NOT the end of the world, but it's going to be the end of some things, just not sure exactly what yet.

Be a helper. Look out for neighbors who might be at risk, have their back.
Learn how to cook and/or learn how to cook as if meat could become scarce. There is a real possibility that a reduction in govt funding for food safety will make meat and poultry less safe.

Lock down social media to friends only and/or eliminate entirely.

We’re gonna move toward life without tv news and/or a blackout on anything politics.

Buckle in, keep your hands and feet inside the ride while it’s moving, and always be courteous as to who you vomit on.

Admittedly, I am most saddened by what this vote says about how Americans feel about women and other marginalized populations in this country. I can’t help feeling disappointed in my family members and fellow Americans. What I have to remember is that this is one outcome. What about a basic respect for science, education, reason and logic, the rule of law and tenets of democracy? How are we actually making America great? How can you not see what we’re sleepwalking into?

Having no primary and forcing a candidate onto the people is like trying to keep a dam from busting; They patched it with Scotch tape and denial & it was bound to fail.

They panicked when they realized the narrative wasn’t working, adding more “tape” insisting that everything was fine, but people weren’t buying it & could clearly see the bs seeping through.

Then, at the last minute, they desperately scrambled to repair it with a new approach, call it throwing sandbags, but people had had enough & they left, realizing they’d rather risk the flood than trust them.

The truth, however inconvenient, is always better than corruption. People don’t like that. It was the effort to control the narrative and candidacy that backfired.

Project 2025 is all I’m thinking about. My spouse is from another country and I can’t help thinking we need to plan now, before it’s too late for us to leave.

Under the Biden-Harris economy, inflation spiked to a 40-year high of 9.1% only two years ago. Grocery prices, rent, mortgage rates and auto prices remain high. Many Americans are struggling to pay for necessities as a result.

Trump’s tax cuts, which he could extend if elected, are almost enough to garner my vote. Middle- and upper-class Americans pay far more than their fair share of taxes. Most families would be better off − and would stimulate the economy − with a few more dollars in their bank account.

I hope Trump doesn’t implement his plan to impose additional tariffs on imports, but I prefer his economy to President Joe Biden’s any day of the week. Inflation was manageable under Trump, and deregulating the energy industry would be a boon for everyone.

Foreign policy is another crucial matter. Under the Biden-Harris administration, the United States has looked weak. From Israel’s war against Hamas, enabled in part by the Biden administration’s decision to lift sanctions on Iran, to the withdrawal from Afghanistan and Russia’s war against Ukraine, the world is dangerously unstable.

As billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman said in a viral interview, “All of this has led to a world on fire.” In politics, perception is powerful, and Trump is more likely to be perceived as a stronger leader than Harris. He is nothing if not a dealmaker, and that is what America needs in this moment of world history. If Trump reinstitutes sanctions on Iran and can quell the growing alliance among Russia, China, North Korea and Iran, peace may be possible.

Another issue in Trump’s favor: The U.S. southern border must be taken seriously again. It’s a matter of national security. Under the Biden-Harris administration, Trump-era policies were reversed, allowing 8 million migrants to enter the United States, according to Axios. More than 1.7 million people entered the country illegally by evading Border Patrol. And smugglers brought an estimated 50,000 pounds of deadly fentanyl across the border. If he does nothing else, Trump will secure the border.

The Democratic Party spent the past four years scolding Trump for undermining democracy, but then replaced our duly elected, aging and incoherent president as its nominee with Harris after the primary season had ended and she didn’t win a single Democratic vote. It’s the Democratic Party that has fractured the democratic process.

It has been hard to pin Harris down on what she believes. Her evasions are strategic and egregious. But when her ideas are clear, they expose the Democratic Party’s embrace of progressivism.

Harris, alongside Biden, had four years to implement policies that would improve the lives of Americans. They failed. Gallup released a poll this month showing that 52% of Americans say they and their family are worse off today than they were four years ago. Only 39% said they are better off; 9% said they are about the same.

In 2024, we are a nation suffering from the lingering pain of runaway inflation, with a growing and unsustainable debt, in a world where devastating wars threaten to break into global conflict. This isn’t the time to stay the course for four more years.

Voters like me are conservatives who don’t like Trump because we think he doesn’t represent true conservative ideas. I’m also repulsed by his character flaws and legal troubles.

The second category of Trump voters are right-center Americans who can’t find their values or ideas represented in the far-left version of the Democratic Party that Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, represent.

The last kind of person voting for Trump are those who like him − a lot. They think he defies norms, bucks trends and represents the marginalized middle American voter. They like that he schmoozes on golf courses he owns and yet will don a McDonald’s apron to learn how to make french fries. They don’t care that he isn’t an articulate, consistent ideologue because they aren’t.

Democracy has been on its last legs. It isn't meant to last forever. Check this out:

I am not political expert, so take these handful of thoughts with a grain of salt.

The DNC made a mistake by not having Biden drop out sooner and having a primary. This shortened time was not enough for Harris to really take hold, and perhaps a different candidate would have emerged that would have fared better.

The DNC kept a tight control of Harris’ appearances, which left a lot of voters unsure of who she is and what her policies are. What was known about her didn’t match what she was trying to present, giving off an air of inauthenticity.

Walz was a terrible choice. Shapiro was the play. My guess is that he was passed over due to sensitivities surrounding Israel and Palestine. Nobody could have predicted Muslims in Michigan going for Trump.

Democrats had no answer for Vance. Their best shot was to paint a prototypical 90’s frat boy as “weird”. That failed miserably. Objectivity speaking, Vance embarrassed Walz in their debate. And it more impactful than the Harris/Trump debate, which Harris won.

Of the four people in the race, Vance came off the most intelligent, the most poised, and the most presidential. After eight years of Springer-like bedlam, people responded to that.

Despite all of those missteps and factors, I went into last night thinking that Harris would win and that wouldn’t be that close. I was wrong.

So now I hope the Democrats do some self reflection. Harris lost for the reasons that I stated above. It wasn’t racism. It wasn’t misogyny. It wasn’t because of -phobes or -ists.

Eights years were spent calling people Nazis and fascists, calling them threats to democracy, calling them uneducated, all while dismissing the issues that matter to them.

That strategy bit the Democrats in the ass, so much so that Trump won the popular vote. Let’s see if anyone learns from that. Or let’s see if they have Articles of Impeachment drafted from the day he is inaugurated.

On a bright note, perhaps people will finally stop calling for the electoral college to be abolished.

Half of this will be unpopular in this sub but here goes. I voted for Trump. But I’m also pro-choice to an extent so I voted Democrat for my state senate and congressional seats since abortion is a state issue. I say this to illustrate when I say I’m an independent. I mean it. I certainly have my issues with both parties.

I’m actually surprised how the presidential election is going. But. Here’s my take. Biden fucked the Harris campaign. It was glaringly obvious he wasn’t at remotely close to full mental capacity long before he bowed out. She was behind the 8 ball with such little time to string together a good campaign.

She kept up on abortion too much. She didn’t distance herself from Biden with economy policy. Very easy to say, “I would do this differently”. She allegedly was in charge of the border. We’ve all seen those numbers. Her campaign didn’t distance herself from Biden border policy either.

Real politicians are teams and her team shit the bed. As much as I name call and shit on party line voters, that’s probably the majority. Rs will vote Rs and Ds will vote Ds. The Harris team did a poor job capturing the I’s.

That just isn't what the masses are looking for. Trump is really good at playing on fears and insecurities, he's a hard candidate to beat.

Having said that, I've discovered I'm more of a wishful idealist than anything else.

I am not a fan of what I've heard referenced as "Lesser of 2 Evils" voting. We should never be forced to look at 2 shitty situations and think "which one is the LESS shitty of the 2", whether referring to voting or otherwise.

I don't know what it is going to take to end the ever growing divide in this country. If Trump lost the election the right would be screaming "IT WAS RIGGED" and loudly decrying THEIR beliefs. That Harris lost the election means that my social media feed is filled with devastation, requests for believers in "the other side's rhetoric", and general crying and whining.

I’m trying to make sense of it all and I can’t. I think it’s important for those of us who are grieving to allow those feeling and process them. All I can say is I do have hope. She is absolutely outraged that people who hate her non binary cousins and who want women to be lesser and whose ability concern is "show me the money" have won

I've explained to her that education is her only shield and the only way out of this.

I've also told her to look at the bright side: no news for 4 years and my already pathetic attempts at dating are going to be completely abandoned now!

I went to college on the tax payer's dime. Most of us did if we graduated before 2002, unless we went to a private college.

I'm baffled that there are so many voters in the US that had to have seen the complete insanity of Donald Trump, including the "grab 'em by the pussy" comments, the mockery of disabled people and so many other vulnerable populations, the belittling of women, the insults toward transgender individuals and others in the LGBTQ+ community, the vile and hateful comments that spewed from him nearly every day, the total mishandling of the COVID pandemic that helped allow over a million Americans to be killed from the virus, the mountains of corruption and cozying up to quasi-dictators in places like China and Russia, even secretly sending Russia COVID testing machines when they were needed here, the two impeachments, the rape and bribery convictions, the 34 felony convictions stemming from his attempts to interfere and overturn the results of the 2020 election, the stochastic terrorism calling for his angriest supporters to violently siege the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 as part of an armed insurrection on the American government and the peaceful transition of power, the stolen documents piling up in his Mar-a-Lago bathroom, the apprent onset of dementia at his rallies that convinced him to fellate a microphone stand, and many other crimes and deplorable activities that he's engaged in just over the last 8+ years, that they would go to the polls and look at his name on the ballot and decide, "Yes, I want more of that."

Despite swearing up and down I would not vote for trump because how ugly and divisive he is, I did. Because I felt bullied and I’m sick of it. And I wake up to a world where democrats lost the presidency, the house and the senate and my news feed is completely silent on election results. And I just feel a little bit justified today.

If you’re going to fight, fight fair and back it up. Democrats lost huge because they ran their mouths and did t back it up with a vote.

Now we get to listen to 4 years of impeachment calls for trump. And I say good luck.
