I bought a compressor because I can't find reliable air sources at trailheads, and now we're onto electric offroaders?
Going to love to see the first EV fire at the ocean...
ItsMeTrey@reddit
This is Olympic level mental gymnastics right here folks.
DudeWhereIsMyDuduk@reddit
I'm starting to think three things: 1) a lot of people haven't off-roaded in ICE vehicles to see just how bad the efficiency gets, 2) maybe EVs don't have the same efficiency drop-off in low range, on the order of single digit MPG for ICE vehicles, or 3) people just don't have any empathy for publicly-available resources anymore
simon2517@reddit
Yeah, maybe.
ICE constantly uses energy just running. Go very slow and that dominates, giving terrible MPG.
EVs don't. Yeah you constantly run AC or whatever but that doesn't take anything like as much as the fuel used driving slowly.

Why would there be air at trailheads? Am I missing something?
DudeWhereIsMyDuduk@reddit
It's a nice thing to have for people to air back up, you're usually running lower air pressure off road.
Shmokesshweed@reddit
Yes, I know why you'd air down. That's why I have a compressor as well. But I don't see why you would expect for that to be provided at the trails. Maybe I'm missing something.
SwiftCEO@reddit
I think they’re saying that charging stations would be harder to find than an air pump?
Shmokesshweed@reddit
Maybe. I could see that.
Titan0917@reddit
I don't see gas stations at trail heads, I don't understand what the compressor has to do with EVs

"Electric offroad van" is what I'm waiting for. Color me excited.
I will note that the PB5 has yet to release its specs, inc. kwh or range. It was also announced as FWD-only. I doubt adding 4WD or AWD, offroad tires, beefier suspension, and increased ground clearance, will increase the range. I hope it is baseline usable, which for me means 250 miles. I would love more range, but I personally could live with 250.
For my purposes - EV boondocking - the size of the battery is at least as important as the range. For every kwh I use to get to a great camp spot, I would like to use multiple kwh there powering lights, and charging my work laptop and Starlink... and, yes, running the heat pump when it's a bajillion degrees at noon or below freezing when I wake up. For me, this is most of the point of having an EV. (Look, this is my terrestrial-spaceship dream, Imma dream comfy yhear).
If this has kwh and range comparable to an R1S... shut up and take my money tbh.
InformalBee2830@reddit
This all sounds well and good but how big of a battery would that take? It sounds like you'd at least need something in the 200kwh or approaching that.
faizimam@reddit
Nah, charging electronics and lights uses a legible amount of power. 5 to 10 kWh extra is more than enough unless you are talking about longer term off grid living.

Umm, your wife and her boyfriend? Huh?

Aventador?
