It’s the flag. I don’t get the emotional symbolism that others get I suppose. Yes it represents the country but it doesn’t trigger any kind of an emotional response in me. It’s like the logo of our country. I’ve got absolutely nothing against it but I don’t shed a tear or been with pride every time I see one either. Where I live, you see it everywhere so I might be desensitized I suppose.
I am bothered by the intent of the person doing it since they are intending to deface/insult the country. Damage to a flag occurring under non hostile or accidental circumstances doesn’t bother me. So it’s more about the context of the event itself. I feel it’s more about disrespecting the country, than disrespecting the flag
It’s meant to symbolize the country. Every country has one, this is ours. I get the symbolism of the design elements from when it was originally designed but it doesn’t give me any emotional response at all.
I think too that a lot of the people who are covered in flag attire and have it decorating everything are really fanatical and extreme and that has given a bit of a negative connotation for me to it
I agree, I’m my mind it’s disrespectful to be wearing the flag as clothing, so I don’t see those sorts of people as anything more than missing the point
And the way they are aggressive about it. Like they make it their whole personality and think anyone without 10 flags on a pickup truck is their enemy. It’s creepy nationalism and honestly has turned a red, white and blue flag into a red flag 🚩 as in, stay away from those folks
and it’s actively making liberal types like myself uncomfortable with even a single flag. Which is a shame, and completely backwards. Conservatives like to pretend that they own the American flag, but the truth is it’s the flag of Liberalism! Liberals try their best to make America resemble more of what the flag means—freedom, liberty, and equality. It’s like the quintessential goal of liberalism, and yet republicans like to pretend the American flag is something conservative.
Even though I wasn’t born here, becoming naturalized was a lifelong dream of mine. To me, the American flag symbolizes the very best of this country and the hope and freedom that comes with being part of this great nation’
Pretty much nothing? I appreciate the ideals of our country but so many really harmful people use the flag as a symbol of nationalism and a way of excusing inflicting pain on others so I tend to not associate the flag with my own patriotism. I do literally choke up hearing the Star Spangled Banner tho which is embarrassing, but I think the context of the story is just very ✨Patriotic✨
It’s a symbol of our country, and can represent all the complicated feelings a person might have about this complicated place. As such, I don’t expect a person to feel any one way about it. It represents hope and despair, sacrifice and greed, justice and injustice all at once.
In my idealist brain, it is a symbol of the sacrifice so many people, especially those who go under/unrecognized, made throughout history to build a country where I am free to say this next part without the fear of getting arrested: my realist brain says it's a really ugly design
I can't explain it. It's very emotional for me. I understand (intellectually) that's silly, but my emotions say differently.
I never had a home as a child, metaphorically or physically. My dad was special operations in the military, and we'd often go several years with no contact from him (at all). Many times, he'd be gone for a year, come back for a week, then leave again for 4 months, and on and on. I rarely knew what country he was in, or even what continent. My mother was/is a histrionic narcissist that pitted me and my siblings against each other. My parents had no relationship with their families, thus neither did we. My mother was "the crazy dependapotamous," and drove away any long-term family friends we might have had. We moved every year or two and I went to 12 different schools.
The American flag gave me a sense of security during a very unstable time. Military bases are all the same, whether in Florida, New Mexico, Germany, or Japan. You know what to expect, you know where to go, you know who to talk to. For me, when I see the American flag, particularly during some patriotic moment such as the national anthem, it brings up a lot of emotions. I remember seeing the air show crash at Ramstein Air Base. I remember having to wear gas masks because of Chernobyl. I remember our base absolutely covered in yellow ribbons when a plane was lost, and I remember helping our neighbor pack their home a month later because they were forced out of base housing. I remember entire summers when no men were on base at all, and the kids all had to do "dad jobs" like yardwork, vehicle maintenance, home repairs, etc. I remember thinking (quite extreme) physical domestic violence was the norm and believing that the wives "likely deserved it" for one ridiculous reason or another. I remember having the absolute coolest 4th of July celebrations, and nobody cared that half the guests spoke no English and weren't American. I think about how I was raised on a Ground Zero test site for Agent Orange, which is the most likely reason I, my siblings, my kids, and my nieces all have neurological diseases. I think about the one and only time I ever saw my dad cry, which was when he told me about the first time he left the country - at 19 - when he had to help clean up the Jonestown Massacre. I'm not sure if he was crying for the people or for his inner child, or both.
For me, the flag is both a symbol of stability and dysfunction all at once.
It's interesting because my kids detest the flag and find it embarrassing. To them, the flag is just a sign of oppression, capitalism, and racism. I'm grateful my kids had/have a stable home and don't need to find comfort in some ridiculous symbol that causes pain to so many others.
It used to just be the flag of my country. After 9/11, people started putting more flags up. At that time, it felt like we were all in it together.
Now I just see Maga-type people waving/wearing them.
These days, the only time I don't feel threatened is when it's part of a July 4th outfit.
If I had a pickup truck and time to kill, I would drive around with my flags flying. The Stars & Stripes, a few Gay Pride/ LGBTQ+ flags, Black Lives Matter flags, El Tri, porque viva la Raza. Maybe I'd even have a custom flag made for WA state, but instead of George Washington's profile, it would be the face of our state's founding father, a black settler named George Washington Bush, whose family moved north when they arrived in Oregon territory and the racists wouldn't let them stay.
If I had a pickup truck I'd happily let you borrow it for that purpose, I'd even pay the gas. It'd be a nice change-up to all the Maga flags I see people flying from their trucks around here. Nowadays even if it's just the American flag (not very often) its a safe assumption there's probably a trump flag flying at home
Unfortunately the GOP has stolen the American flag from the American people. In recent years it's become a symbol of hate and fascism. Living in Florida, the people that are flying the flag here are the same ones hating on immigrants/LGBT rights and voting alongside the neo-nazis waving swastika flags at Disneyland.
I would love to see a truck with just an American flag one day, but they're always accompanied by a Trump or Brandon type flag.
Not ridiculous if you’re one of the millions of murdered indigenous people, many murdered by American soldiers under that flag, on reservations flying that flag. That flag is a symbol of the worst humanity has to offer to many people in our country. Not knowing your own country’s history and then negating that history by calling it ridiculous, well there’s something ridiculous here, but it’s not the comment you responded to and it’s not my response either.
You GTFO here, we’re talking about the flag of the United States, not other nations, as this is the Ask An American sub. Read an American history book, the only imbecile is the person who doesn’t know their own history.
I can say whatever I want and you can pretend to ignore it all you want smartass. I'm well aware of our history and it's atrocities, I'm also aware of our progress and advances that have spread through the world. The notion that the American flag represents hatred and war criminals is laughable when compared to the rest of the world.
It’s our country’s flag that’s all it means to me. Also kind of cringe now when I see people wearing American flag clothing just makes me think of our domestic terrorists MAGA stans.
It varies. I have 7 1/2 years of my life and my husband gave 20 so we used to be proud and respectful of it. We stopped and faced it with hands over hearts twice a day when we lived on base. I came from a long line of service traced back to the French and Indian War with copies of letters and censuses to prove it and yet since Jan 6th not so much. Our flag has been commandeered by a party of sexust racist bigots that I unfortunately gave my time for their right to be as racist and bigoted as they want to be. We were taught to treat the stars and bars with respect and not to let it touch the ground and yet I've got neighbors driving around with flags on their pickup like they are a float in the parade and the flags are falling apart. It makes me sick.
So burn the flag if you must, but before you do, you better burn a few other things! You better burn your shirt and your pants! Be sure to burn your TV and car! Oh yes, and don't forget to burn your house! Because none of those things could exist without six white stripes, seven red stripes, and a hell of a lot of stars!
aesthetically its not my favorite. which is kinda unfortunate for me, cause insulting it is not a popular thing.. Honestly, i think our state flags should be used a lot more! honestly the place I see the flag the most is on clothing or used like a fashionable accessory rather than given veneration and that
My grandpa was in the navy and he passed away a few months before I was born. I was close to my grandma growing up, and one of my "jobs" when I was there was to take care of the flag - hanging it every morning and taking it down at the end of the day. She taught me a lot about flag etiquette.
I guess it reminds me of my childhood, what it was like to grow up in the Midwest. And the values that my grandma passed down to me and my cousins.
I’ve never really had an opinion on the flag until (somewhat) recently, because of the kind of people that tout it around. By itself, I have no issues with it. The people that worship it, I have issues with.
To many, possibly most, a flag is the identity of a people.
In war, the flag on your shoulder represents your people vs their people and the beliefs behind the conflict.
In peace it signifies the bond we all hold and the dream we push for as a society. Under that flag we are all American, no matter the birth place, the pledge given to defend this land if needed. The solitary promise to each brother and sister beside us that this land will remain a place for every kind of being, defended against threats both foreign and domestic.
That those who hold the flag up with a cry against other citizens of this land not being equal will be put down if choosing violence. The history that flag has under it in times of horror, to be remembered so it is not repeated, a reminder that the most vulnerable need to be protected by the masses. That tyranny will not be accepted against us when pushed too far.
A lgbt pride flag is more to those people than just cloth. A don't tread on me flag is more than cloth. Flags unify a group that share the same ideas.
To me, it represents all idealism the country is founded on. I won’t argue that America falls short in a lot of ways, but I still think that it’s a special place and the flag represents what we should be striving for.
To me, it's a reminder that we have the freedom to be whoever we want to be. Most Americans I've met want people to be the best, biggest versions of themselves. Loud and proud.
It’s a flag, and while there is an emotional value behind it…at the end of the day; it is just a flag and it’s the values behind it that matter to me most.
Before I lived abroad, it didn't mean much to me and I held some disdain for people who put a lot of meaning into it.
Then I lived in Japan for 3 years and met people from all over the world. I've also taught in Morocco and I have formed friendships with people from many different countries.
Now, the bold colors of the US flag represent the bold idealism of Americans. The horizontal stripes represent an attempt for forward progress towards equality. The white stars on the field of blue represent the make up of different groups living together in harmony but each with their own liberties and norms.
This was the original intent of the flag. Separation of Church and State. All ideas and religions are respected if they don't bring harm to others. Everyone respects everyone and gets respect in turn. Unfortunately, I think that has vanished since 2010 and political separations have poisoned the country from both sides. I hate to see it. When I joined in 2012 I think we were unified much more. Look how unified we were when 9/11 happened. However we quickly threw blame on one group (brown people in general. I don't know if true equality can ever truly happen. At least not anymore. But there's always a group that gets blamed for whatever tragedy is currently happening.
We learned the wrong kind of unity can lead to unspeakable tragedy, like the Iraq war. We learned that patriotic feelings are easily manipulated to serve unjust causes.
I don't know if that was the official intent behind the flag. Though there wasn't religious intent, these wasn't necessarily secularist either. The colors represent American qualities like red for valor, blue for justice etc. Beyond that is up to your interpretation I guess
Living somewhere else really opens your eyes to the advantages we all had. I spent 5 years 8n Japan and honestly felt that the tighter regulations helped to unify the people. Same with South Korea. Even Australia is harder to live in so people, for the most part, work as one, IMO
I want to say- freedom, pride in my country and its ideals, opportunity.
That’s what I grew up feeling, anyway.
I have to say though that while I can still find those feelings, and I am still incredibly grateful I was born here, that the flag itself has become a negative symbol as well, because of how it is used my some people in my country as a symbol of nationalism, hate and oppression. It really feels unfair that these groups have co-opted the flag for this purpose. And I hate that I feel this way.
To me since I embroider it all the time at work: 1076, white, 1147, black.
To me as an American, I'd say it stands for the goal in being the best we can be as a people and a country. It helps to signify the bar by which we ought to behave and grow as a nation, rather than settling for less. In other countries some people see it as the symbol of freedom that its meant to be and it can give them hope or relief (especially in disaster stricken areas). My genuine hope is that other nations see it as a reassurances to find us on their shores rather than a blighted curse, though I know many would view us as the latter because of things we've done.
We are a strong nation, but we do have many flaws, and flaws I hope one day that we can grow out of before we eat ourselves alive with another civil war.
I used to be proud of it for what it represents.
Now, I don't like seeing it ever since Trump and his believers used it as a symbol for Trumpism.
Yet another thing that that man has ruined.
It represents all the sacrifice the real heroes of this country have made to keep our freedoms, the soldiers, all of them, every war, regardless of the reasons for being there. All the support personal, the men and women who served. All gave some, some gave all. I revere the flag and what it means, even kneeling or burning it, all fought for freedoms. That is what represents everything that I am still proud of for my country. I guess a lot of it is the symbolism of the flag being run across a battlefield or the pole at Iwo Jima. I genuinely view it as more than a piece of cloth, but a point of pride.
Really cool how it symbolizes each state United. Curious if and when a 51st state is added how to organize the stars. I liked the 48 star flag for example.
"It's complicated"
On the one hand, when I see it flying on a flag pole outside the city hall, or a post office, etc. I am reminded of all the good my country can do. On the other hand, when I see nationalists with 30 flags adoring themselves, their cars, and their homes, all in varying states of decay, I am reminded of the horribleness of our history and how we have to work hard to prevent that from being the next chapter of our history as well.
It represents the past, those who carried it into battle, those who came home.with it draped over a box. It represents the best we have to offer, and sometimes our not so best. It represents the hope that we try to do our best, learn from our past, and make a brighter future for the next generation.
My dad loved that flag and all it represents, he taught me to love and honor it and I think I've done a pretty good job of teaching my kids.
To me it represents your foreign nation is about to get “intervened” for the “greater good” of “global security”
Or that you’re about to loose your natural resources
It also represents insane blind patriotism, like EVERY SINGLE house has to have the flag? Ew
Nothing good, its an objectively cool design but it just has too many negative connotations
It symbolizes my country. Honestly, more Californian than anything else but I served 6 years in the US ARMY and will still support and defend the constitution of the UNITED STATES and give my life to defend this democracy of if need be. So yeah I guess it means a lot
Without sounding too cheesy:
Hope.
It is living proof that it ain't over til it's over. That the odds don't always spell the outcome. That someone - no matter who they are, what race/ethnicity they are, how old they are, even how handicapped they are- can make it.
It's a symbol for the country.
Not like... Ah this is the manifestation everything America is and therefore sacred it's just something you can put up somewhere to be like "this place/thing is American" or to express "Wooo go America"
Depends on where it's at.
More to my point if it's hanging off the back of a truck, or with political intent, then bad things.
On a house, or in front of a business, neutral things.
At Memorials, Museums, or military Cemeteries, then good things.
Next to a confederate or nazi flag, then stupid as fuck things.
Stands for Americans and all of our history, even the bad shit, but ultimately stands for the idea that when the we put our mind to doing something together under that flag we get shit done :)
A colored piece of cloth that represents our country.
Not much deeper than that.
Handy tool to ID, when that sort of thing is needed...like a ship or athlete competing on behalf of a country.
It doesn't mean what it used to. Before 9/11 our town put flags up on state holidays, such as July 4, Labor Day and Memorial Day. Now they're up all the time. Kind of lost their meaning over the years.
The flag itself, not a whole lot. The people as a whole, that's what our country is. A bunch of awesome weirdos from everywhere and nowhere. From valley Girls, to cowboys, rastas, yuppies, hippies, weebs, whatever the heck comes from Maine (zombie cats from cursed burial grounds I think), and everything in between. You're all awesome... kinda wanna slap the poop out of most nowadays, but still love ya!
I associate it with freedom and the Founding Fathers' ideals, personally.
Wikipedia has some information on the "official" symbolism:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_United_States#Symbolism
It doesn't necessarily 'mean' anything to me other than just a symbol that represents the US. 50 stars for 50 states and 13 stripes for the OG colonies.
