Obligatory: "We're a republic, not a simple democracy."
Inevitable-Tone-8595@reddit
They are not mutually exclusive terms. We are a democracy, and a republic. A republic is a type of democracy, because the citizens vote to elect their representatives in government. We are a democratic republic.
veive@reddit
Disagree. In a democracy the popular vote should always rule. In a republic we have limits on what the popular vote is allowed to do.
Inevitable-Tone-8595@reddit
You are just using a more narrow definition when the word is broader than that.
Oxford, democracy: “a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.”
Merriam Webster, democracy: “a form of government in which people elect representatives to make decisions, policies, laws, etc. according to law.”
We are a democracy!!
veive@reddit
Nah. I'm using a historically accurate definition and you are using the kind of fuzzy layman's definition that people use to argue that hot dogs are tacos.

Appeal to authority fallacy. There is no rule that says the current definition in the dictionary is the correct one.

Citing a stronger source is not an appeal to authority fallacy.
Since you don’t understand how dictionaries work, here is another source you might understand better:
If you read the article, you will understand that in order for you to be correct, you need to be using the phrase “direct democracy” or “pure democracy,” which is a specific type of democracy where citizens directly create and vote on laws as referendums. The article agrees that we are NOT a direct democracy, we have a constitutional republic, but we still have a type of democracy because the people have the power to choose their representatives in the republic. Which is the greek and original use of the word democracy.
Hope this helps.

I understand just fine. No, we are not a democracy. We are a republic.

Facts don’t care your feelings

I have been citing facts. You have been citing politically doctored shit designed to help gaslight the population into believing that doing shit like abolishing the Electoral College and packing the supreme court is the right thing to do if it gets the popular vote what they want. Fuck you. No.
We are a republic.

I’m so sorry that the public education system failed you. It’s really not that hard to understand that there are different types of democracies, or that other forms of government can embody democratic features. I don’t know why this is so hard for you to understand.
Is it because it sounds like the word Democrat to you? You think that admitting we are a democracy somehow empowers the libs and Democrats? You realize they are different things right??
Brainrot has consumed you
