This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:
- Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
- I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
- I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Could someone recommend some ssd's? Ive already got a good set but not up to date with current storage stuff out there. Looking for 2 two terabytes and ideally not too expensive
EdBenes@reddit
I should probably add Im gonna be doing gaming and possibly a bit Local Llama stuff
UndeadGodzilla@reddit
Is this a drive that you'll have the OS installed on, or is it just for the lots of extra space that games and AI require?
EdBenes@reddit
It’ll be a secondary. Just need extra space
UndeadGodzilla@reddit
Yeah then either two of those are a great choice, you can also get a Crucial P3 plus if you wanna save another 40 or 50 dollars. That one is 5000MB/s instead of 7000MB/s.
EdBenes@reddit
thanks ill have a look at all those
UndeadGodzilla@reddit
Acer Predator would be a good choice too

UndeadGodzilla@reddit
Which 420mm AIO will provide lower CPU temps: Liquid Freezer 3 or ThermalTake TH420 V2?
n7_trekkie@reddit
LF3, it's thicc
UndeadGodzilla@reddit
I have no doubt that the pump is better but are the fans and static pressure on the radiator also better than the TH420?
n7_trekkie@reddit
I don't think the fans overcome the thicc factor. I don't know that for a fact tho.
Still, it's easier to replace fans than replace a whole aio minus fans
UndeadGodzilla@reddit
Yeah this is gonna be a monster. 14 fans. O11D EVO XL w/ LF3 420 ontop, 3x front 3x bottom, 3x side, 2x rear.

Lately on Ebay I've been seeing used graphics cards pulled from pre-builts with proprietary parts. Is there any reason to not put a graphics card pulled from a dell or a lenovo in your own build?
Lugnerin@reddit
Super new to PC building and general PC stuff. I'm looking to build my first PC and currently looking for a CPU/GPU combo that will let me play most modern AAA games at 1440p with >60FPS. I'm hoping to play the upcoming Monster Hunter: Wilds and will be playing Helldivers 2, Baldurs Gate 3, Cyberpunk, and Dragon's Dogma 2 once it's built.
winterkoalefant@reddit
Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon's Dogma 2 need a very fast CPU for 60 fps in the city/camp (around a Ryzen 7 7800X3D). Most of the gameplay is in less busy areas though, so a cheaper CPU like Ryzen 5 7600 would be fine if you're budget-limited.
The GPU requirement is less strict because you can increase graphics settings to take advantage of more powerful GPUs or lower the settings and render resolution to run on weaker GPUs. RTX 4070 Super I think should be able to run 1440p close to max settings for all those games except Cyberpunk. Cyberpunk's max settings use heavy ray tracing, though it still looks great on the settings that the RTX 4070 Super can comfortably run.
RX 7600 XT would be around the minimum I'd recommend for 1440p 60 fps. You can refer to the charts n7_trekkie linked for GPUs in between. Just be aware that Techpowerup's benchmarks aren't necessarily done in the most demanding parts of the games so their frame rate numbers are more useful for relative comparisons rather than directly telling you what to buy for a certain performance level.
Hope this helps you get started on your search. Feel free to ask more questions.
n7_trekkie@reddit
To compare CPUs, you may pick any that achieves the minimum FPS you desire:

https://tpucdn.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d/images/cyberpunk-2077-1920-1080.png
Then the GPU you choose will determine the performance you actually see, since the CPU won't be holding it back:

Noob question: just upgraded from an r5 3600 to a 5700x3d. However I did not update the BIOs beforehand, BUT I booted up just fine
Is there a way to check if I’m being held back or if there’s an issue, or since it fired up am I good to go? And if not, can I download the latest BIOs now or do I need to swap in the old card first
n7_trekkie@reddit
normal ryzen stuff: install chipset drivers
https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers.html auto detect
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Since it boots just fine, you are technically good to go.
However depending on what BIOS version your motherboard is running, you might benefit from some additional stability or higher boost clocks by upgrading to a newer version.
DaLB53@reddit
So what, just download it to an external USB from another computer and install? Or can I go all from one machine..
Also somewhat related: I activated XMP for my DDR4 3600 RAM to get all possible power from my sticks but now my PC wont detect my second monitor... any insight?
TemptedTemplar@reddit
If your PC is booting, you can download it there. No extra PC needed.
As for the change in display, try reinstalling your GPU drivers. Or update them with a clean install.
DaLB53@reddit
Hmmm did a clean uninstall and reinstall and no dice
But whats weird is if i boot up BIOs it appears on THAT monitor, but then it switches to my main when i get to my sign in...
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Is one monitor using the motherboard output or are both plugged into the GPU?
Extension_Age06@reddit
I was tinkering on my bios and noticed that theres an option for the system/case fans to be on smart mode. Should put it on smart mode or just leave it on default static speed?
n7_trekkie@reddit
imo, it's nicer when the fans are quiet when the cpu is cool. however some people find the ramping up and down in speed annoying
TheNinjaDinosaur@reddit
I’ve had a gtx 1080 for 6 years or so now and am finally looking to upgrade. I game at 1080p, 144hz and mostly play fps games like CoD and Counter Strike and I’m hoping to run new cods at around 144fps. Ideally I’d like to get a good gpu now so that I don’t need to upgrade it again for a while. My current cpu is a I7 10700k which I expect will be a bottle neck for most gpus but that’s ok, I can upgrade that down the road if needed.
If you had my specs what would you go for?

This is my current build but I think I want to upgrade the cpu however my mobo isn't compatible with the 7800x3d I was wanting and I don't really wanna replace both. Does it even make sense to go from a 5800x to a 5800x3d or will the difference be negligible? I'm wanting better frames in WoW and CS2
TemptedTemplar@reddit
A 5700x3d or 5800x3d would offer minimal improvements in maximum FPS, but if you occasionally encounter stuttering or low FPS dips; you would see improvements there thanks to the extra CPU cache.
Have you run a performance monitor or watched Task managers performance page while a game is running?
Despite its age, Wow is actually pretty heavy on the GPU. and CS2 is still going through performance improvements.
I would bet your current limitations are at the 3060ti or your RAM, not the CPU.
bionicbubble@reddit
Interesting, all the posts I've read say mmos and wow in general benefit more from cpu upgrades. I am not really looking for increased max fps, but less fps drops. Is the windows tab in task manager detailed enough to see what the bottleneck is?
TemptedTemplar@reddit
They do, but you're already running the basic model of that same CPU. They would offer almost identical performance at a lower power consumption.
And yes. At least in task manager you get these handy little graphs for every component, if the little graph is hitting the ceiling, its maxed out.
Not all of your CPU cores will be hitting their limits, as lots of games won't use more than 4 or 6. But if you find a few cores hitting their limits, and the GPU, disk or memory are not; then its the likely bottleneck.
xeio87@reddit
Is there anything weird to know about AMD as someone who's only ever had Intel? Some urgency to upgrade this year to avoid tariffs has me thinking about the 9800X3D since it's reviewing well.
New MOBO (and RAM probably) going to be in the mix, work one caveat it's almost certain to be an mITX build.
-Kex@reddit
Nope, just install the chipset drivers after building the pc, that's it.
mATX or ITX?
xeio87@reddit
Whoop, just ITX. I like the small-ish cases, though I have an a ASUS P201 which fits m-ATX too ( with space for my 280 rad)
-Kex@reddit
Lmao, I also have an Asus Ap201 :D
I just didn't want to pay the extra ITX "surcharge".
xeio87@reddit
Haha, it's a great case. 🥰
Not too small to be unworkable, and like you mentioned reasonably priced.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Just insure the board has a BIOS flash button on the rear IO panel and you're set. They are still improving the socket, so having the latest BIOS is helpful.
Only the 7/9900x and the 7/9950x CPUs are weird due to their dual CCD designs. Everything below them performs no different than intel CPUs.
xeio87@reddit
Yeah not to unfamiliar with having to update BIOS stuff at least but that's good to know. Had issues in an older MOBO that wouldn't run XMP till I updated it.
staticwings19@reddit
How much does GPU newer bigger model number matter VS amount of VRAM?
Is older model with more VRAM Better than newer with less?
n7_trekkie@reddit
the name and generation of a GPU doesn't matter basically at all. vram is something you should keep track of, but the performance is sometimes not impacted by vram amount.

I built a pc last year for my kid and I'm just getting around to fixing the fans in the case being only red.
Mobo is GIGABYTE B450M DS3H WIFI Case is a lian li 205m with argb fans in it I believe
Do I need a fan controller to make them change colors?
My half assed internet research says the motherboard may not be argb compatible.
noobMaster6677@reddit
Considering the price difference, would you recommend buying the 7800x3D if it's significantly cheaper than the 9800x3D? If so, what would you consider a significant enough price difference to choose the 7800x3D?
n7_trekkie@reddit
totally. I'd say do a 7800X3d if it's at least 10% cheaper.
https://tpucdn.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d/images/relative-performance-games-1920-1080.png
it's only 4% slower, but far less in realistic scenarios:

RaCRaTranslations@reddit
Would AMD EXPO RDIMM DDR5 work in a W790 motherboard? The XMP version is listed as compatible, but does anyone have any experience with this? It's almost half the price of what I'd be paying otherwise.
n7_trekkie@reddit
intel cannot use EXPO profiles. the RAM likely also has XMP profiles.
NotMilhouse@reddit
So I've built a PC and am now looking at GPUs to complete my build and the whole thing is confusing me slightly.
I understand the difference (in theory) between the chipsets, but in some instances I'm unsure what the differences are between the specific cards themselves. Is it just a case of each card within a chipset just has slightly different specifics (e.g. combination of memory, core clock, boost clock, input ports etc.) but they are fundamentally the same?
Is there anything more to it?
Also, are there any differences between a the brands themselves? There are a lot of brands I am completely unfamiliar with and I'm not sure if that is ignorance on my part, or a sign that no-name brands should be avoided.
n7_trekkie@reddit
fundamentally, cards with the same GPU (the chip, e.g. 4070ti super) are the same. the coolers, the PCBs, and the vbios (clock speeds) vary by card. but the chip, the memory, and usually the io ports are the same. sometimes io varies a tiny bit
LockingSideways776@reddit
Did I make a mistake? Paired with a 4090… I bought the 7950x3D on an impulsive decision as I wanted to upgrade from 5800x3D.
Was patiently waiting for the 9800x3D, but considering the price was $400… I thought it was a no brainer.
Now, with the 9800x3D, the 1080p benchmarks seem pretty good. I have a 1080p 480hz monitor, which is why I’m concerned.
I’m not particularly sure how well the 7950x3D does in 1080p, but is it a huge difference?
n7_trekkie@reddit
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d/18.html
$400 is a price you can be happy with. I got a used 7800x3d for $300, which I'm not mad about. regardless of 9800x3d performance, lol
samuelazers@reddit
Do i need to upgrade my CPU? i want to get rid of the occasional stutter i have. I have a tri-monitor setting, twitch/youtube on the left, gaming on the middle, and web browsing on the right (running dual chrome and vivaldi)
specs:
ram: 32gb ram 3600hz
cpu: ryzen 3600 (can upgrade to ryzen 5000X3D if needed)
gpu: 4060 nvidia rtx 8gb
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Have you tried running a performance monitor or task manager's performance window to see which component might be reaching its limits first?
Depending on the game the fault may lie with the 4060, its a fine little card. But some newer games are simply too demanding.
When reading your CPU usage, insure you have the individual core graphs turned on. Lots of games scale poorly across multiple threads and may only be using cores 1, or 1 through 4. And windows may not be properly assigning tasks to the free ones, resulting in stutters.
samuelazers@reddit
Yes, and it's more advanced than that nothing I can see in the task manager, something about system interrupt, scheduling, that you can't see there.
I'll try your suggestion when I'm home, I had these stuttering with overwatch, baldursgate3 despite over 150/120 fps respectively
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Keep an eye on the disk too! If its a SATA SSD or HDD that would be an easy bottleneck, though if its a cheap NVME drive that could also have its ups and downs.
Revilo1138@reddit
Same boat as you with the Ryzen 3600 but I have it paired with a 3070. Wondering if a CPU upgrade to perhaps a 7800X3D, wait for 9800X3D, or prioritize GPU upgrade.
samuelazers@reddit
Yeah the 3600 is a beast, don't really need More "FPS" per se, but more system stability I think a stronger CPU might bring me with triple monitors setup
JDScuss@reddit
Anybody know how to safely clean streaks of gunk and other dirt stuff off of monitors? I don't wanna screw up the panel
TemptedTemplar@reddit
isopropyl alcohol in a little spray bottle.
Window cleaner sprayed on to a cloth/rag first, not the display.
You can really use whatever, as long as you're careful about it. If you are using a conductive liquid like water, simply use as little as possible to insure it does not drip into the cracks around the panel. Follow it up with a dry cloth after cleaning.
Cloths and rags should preferably be static free.
n7_trekkie@reddit
I thought iso and Windex damage the panel coating. I've heard only use water
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/glossary/how-to-clean-monitor-screen/#:~:text=No%2C%20you%20should%20never%20use,layers%2C%20leading%20to%20permanent%20damage.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
As far as I am aware, a panels coating or finish is no different than a shiny new car.
Sticking with something like a cotton towel, a bar rag or even a torn up cotton shirt, wont damage anything unlike microfiber can.
Harsh chemical cleaners can affect the finish of a plastic panel, but that goes for all plastics; not just display panels.
If there is layers of dirt, dust, or grime on the monitor already; your finish is no more ruined than it will be after its cleaned.

I'm planning to build my first ever desktop computer. My idea is to be able to play mainly at 1080p (I have a 165 hz monitor and would like to be on at least 144fps). I think I'll be buying an rtx 4070 super (or maybe 4060 Ti, depending on the prices at the end of the year). I'm also trying to figure it out which processor should I buy, as I want to avoid liquid refrigeration (because of maintenance) as a lot of people have told me that intel CPUs after 12th gen do need it, so my question is:
Which intel CPU should I buy? Is there any drawback on using and AMD cpu talking about the DLSS technologies and things like that?
Thanks for your time in advance
n7_trekkie@reddit
No, and no.
Dragon4840@reddit
Best rtx 4060 to get on amazon? I'm in Italy and with sales all rex 4060 are more or less the same so I was wondering about the best and the differences (like some have 2 fans and some 3) (and no I'll not buy a 6750xt, it's 100 euros more in Italy)
TemptedTemplar@reddit
If you have the space for it, a three fan card will simply run cooler than a two or single fan card.
Their minor clock speed differences are not going to result in any major performance changes.
Dragon4840@reddit
Yeah, sorry my old laptop died a week ago so I practically need a new pc right now but a lot of the cpu are on sale for Black Friday so it's not that bad of a period, btw thank you
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Its not a terrible budget option, especially since the 3060 and 3060ti have all but dried up; its more so just another victim of GPU values sliding into the gutter as a whole.
Randy__Bobandy@reddit
Would a low end graphics card, such as Arc A310 or RX6400, ever come close to saturating a PCIe 4.0 x8 connection?
Some background: I want to spec out a very small computer I can use in my workspace that has a dedicated GPU. I intend on using it for capturing and manipulating 3D scans. My current laptop does not have a sufficient CPU to capture the data, and it does not have a dedicated GPU. A form factor that fits my workspace limited free room is Lenovo's line of tiny desktops. These can accept a single slot, low profile graphics card.
Two models that fit my requirements (but not my budget) are the M90q Gen 3 and P360 desktops. These both have a PCIe 4.0 x8 connection, which I know the Arc A310 uses (I have a separate computer with the Arc A380, and that's performant enough for what I need, so hopefully something like the A310 is close enough).
There are similar versions of the computers that have earlier PCIe generations, and are less expensive, but I don't know if the card can be fully utilized at, say, PCIe v3.0 x4 bandwidth.

I’m not trying to start a political discussion, but how big of an impact do y’all think the potential tariffs will have on prices? I’ve been looking at a build for a while, and I’m tempted to just spend the cash now so I don’t get stuck paying crazy prices next year.
Mods, you’re welcome to delete if this isn’t appropriate. Not trying to be political, but I just figured this sub might have some more insight on PC prices specifically.
ZeroPaladn@reddit
Speculation that tarrifs will push pricing up are still pretty hollow and just that - speculation. I'd keep an eye on r/hardware for articles that provide more concrete information around what tarrifs will be implemented and how the North American market will roll with them.
ILikeMyGrassBlue@reddit
Yeah, I know it’s speculative at this point. Trump isn’t exactly know for being great with details, and he can’t actually doing anything until January anyways. I guess buying now is probably the safe bet regardless though. I doubt prices will go down next year, even if they don’t go up.
DoktorLuciferWong@reddit
are there any benchmark channels that test audio production?
or is testing audio production tasks seen as not worth it because they're not demanding enough?
i myself am not even sure what really benefits audio production the most, higher core count, raw speed/ipc (audio fx are processed serially, right?), or a mix of both?
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Its generally not demanding enough to require benchmarks. However once you get into video production or Flawless audio recordings more than a few minutes long, then you do have to worry about memory bandwidth constraints. As a single audio file could easily measure gigabytes in size.
Those problems are easily rectified with a high speed NVME and as much fast RAM as you can cram into the motherboard. As long as your CPU is from a modern generation, it shouldn't have much trouble.
Coolman_Rosso@reddit
Is the R5 5600X still the go-to budget CPU for AM4? Or am I misremembering?
ZeroPaladn@reddit
5600 or 5600X, depending on which is cheaper in your region - they're effectively the same chip.
On the flipside of things, Intel options like the i5 12400F is the mirrored option from Intel and they both have cheap boards and RAM available to them. It's best to compare both AMD and Intel option pricing at this range :)
PajamaPantsy@reddit
I'm currently running an RTX3080 with a 3700X. I feel like my CPU is starting to be a bottleneck in a lot of modern games and want to upgrade. Would a 5700x3D be a worthwhile investment, or would I be better of investing in a new AM5 motherboard with a 7 or 9 x3D series and DDR5 ram?
ZeroPaladn@reddit
Good investment to extend the lifespan of your system without too much capital. The AM4 X3D CPUs leapfrog lots of AM5 offerings in many new games, and at worst still runs measurably faster than your 3700X.
Bonus points: finding a used 5800X3D for the same price as a new 5700X3D (that's what I did).
PajamaPantsy@reddit
yeah, I know its a pretty cheap but significant upgrade. But I also feel making the jump to AM5 now would future proof my PC when I get a new GPU in the future. Especially now that the 9800x3D seems to be a pretty decent upgrade to even the 7800x3D as well.
ZeroPaladn@reddit
It's a matter of "what do you want to spend now" and "what's your GPU upgrade cycle looking like"?
$220 vs. $750+ is not an insignificant delta for improvements that you'll still feel with your existing GPU, and if the 3080 plans to live for a while yet you'll be "futureproofing" for nothing.
If you have the cash to jump onto a 9800X3D now and a GPU upgrade is in your trajectory, jump on it.
If the platform cost is hard to swallow and you still want to see improvements now, or your GPU is far past the horizon, maybe the little bump you'll feel now will do well while you squirrel away for an entire new PC for when that new GPU wants to happen.
PajamaPantsy@reddit
hmm yeah fair enough. I think I'll wait and see what the total upgrade price to AM5 will be with potential black friday deals and decide then. Or wait until the next set of GPU launches. I'm fine with the 3080 atm but if the next generation is a big improvement I might switch.
Thanks for your input.
AOEIU@reddit
My computer requires waiting 5+ seconds between turning off and turning back on again, otherwise it fails to boot (everything lights up but it doesn't post).
Is this more likely due to the PSU or motherboard?
This is problematic because I use it as server and have it set to automatically boot after power failures, but that doesn't work if it only goes out for a few seconds.
I'd rather avoid a more complicated UPS solution if replacing the PSU would solve it.
Carnildo@reddit
Probably the board, but five seconds is within the range of normal -- it takes time for residual charge to dissipate from the circuits. I wouldn't count on any given board or PSU supporting rapid power cycles.
AOEIU@reddit
Yeah I don't know what's normal for fast power cycles, maybe I'm expecting too much.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
There is an easy way to test if it is the PSU, use the switch on the back.
Shut the PC down, flip the power switch off and back on, and then try turning the computer on again.
Have you checked your BIOS settings for any kind of boot options? If its a perfectly fixed amount of time between shutting down and booting up, my first thought would be some kind of setting thats taking its sweet time to wrap up before the PC is actually powered off.
AOEIU@reddit
Interesting, I've never thought of trying that. Thanks for the idea.
No options that I can find.

does anyone know if I have to play F5 refresh spam games tomorrow at 6am Pacific Time to get my hands on a 9800X3D?
Newegg lists it as 6am, how about Amazon? Anyone from the last time there was a release like this and how the timing worked?
TemptedTemplar@reddit
If you want it day 1, yes.
Amazon is likely to be similar though I'm not sure they have a static time they open up orders on new releases.

In the netherlands, a 6750xt is around $65 more expensive than a rtx 4060.
Would you say the 6750xt is worth it despite the difference in price? The non-50 6700xt is EOL for the netherland.
bestanonever@reddit
The 6750 XT is a competitor and usually has an egde over the 4060ti, let alone the regular 4060. The 6750 XT is a good 1440p starter GPU and very good 1080p performer. The 4060 is barely an ok-ish 1080p GPU and really weak at 1440p. At that level of performance, raytracing is not much of an option, so the only thing you are missing by going for the Radeon is DLSS. And even then, you have FSR, which, while inferior in terms of visual quality, it's not super awful or anything.
I'd get the Radeon card if you can pay for it.

Hey guys, I'll be buying a desktop PC in the coming months and was wondering if my idea is feasible on a 1200-1400$ after tax / 1300€ (I live Sweden) budget. The purpose is software engineering, running a local LLM, and gaming, but I have few specific needs:
In other words, something good enough for already-released games and to efficiently run lighter (30b or less) LLMs. Anything beyond that should be fine by extension, I don't need extreme efficiency there.
The question is - it should be easily to do on a 1080p, but given that I'll be buying all parts, can I still make it work on 1440p on this budget?

Will X870E mobos need a bios update to support the 9800X3D or is it already supported?

I looked at the bios lists of several x870e boards and I believe that the 9800x3d will work without a bios update, but it won't work optimally

n7_trekkie@reddit
correct. you can upscale 1440p to 4K, so it's not too bad
oreosandwhich@reddit
Im really new to all these computer words, does upscale mean running the game at 1440 on a 4k monitor?
n7_trekkie@reddit
When you see DLSS or FSR or XESS, those are upscaling technologies. when theyre on, the GPU renders images at a lower resolution, then it uses AI so the pictures come out as your monitor's resolution
ZeroPaladn@reddit
Best way to see what you'd need is to find GPU reviews that include the games that you're interested in or, if it's a particularly popular game, reviews for particular games that include a huge salvo of different GPUs.

Hello!
The Monster Wilds beta test was the first time my PC has been completely destroyed (i realize that the optimization was pretty poor) and now I feel like its time to upgrade the old Ryzen 5 3600. I'm rocking a rtx 3070TI and I will probably be looking to upgrade to 5000 series not immediately at launch but soon depending on price.
Is it worth it to move from Zen4 to Zen5 Now and invest in a higher-end CPU? like the 7800x3d or 9800x3d or should the 5700/5800 x3d be good enough to stop bottlenecking for hopefully MH Wilds or generally the future?

Hello!
I'm getting irritated with long boot times and such stemming from having only HDD-based storage. I'm looking to upgrade and add on some form of SSD. My motherboard is an Alienware 0HJ5Y7, I believe. Could someone suggest/point me in the right direction of what kind of option I should be looking for?
Thanks!
ZeroPaladn@reddit
Found your board! Let's talk about your options:
It looks like you've got a single NVMe PCIe 3.0 slot, so any modern NVMe drive will slide in here. Mindful that while most drives you'd pick up today will be PCIe 4 or 5, they'll still work just fine with lower peak speeds for large file transfers - general use, Windows, and gaming will be just fine. Pick up a spare NVMe post and screw in case your board is magically missing it or got tossed out with the packaging your system originally came with.
You can replace or supplement your existing hard drive with SATA SSDs that come in 2.5" sizes. They're considered "old" now, but will still deliver a much better experience for Windows and general use than a mechnaical spinning hard drive.

is it this?

you actually have an m.2 slot, so using nvme ssds should work. I would try this drive out. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/4kpzK8/silicon-power-ud90-1-tb-m2-2280-pcie-40-x4-nvme-solid-state-drive-sp01kgbp44ud9005

what cpu should i get to pair with a 4070 super for 1440p if i plan on keeping both for at least 5 years? i have a 240hz monitor. i was thinking that by that time am6 will probably be out by that time already and i’d probably like to upgrade to that if the changes are substantial over am5 so a ryzen 5 7600 would be good rather than me spending almost 3x as much for a 9800x3d and not being able to use it for am6.
UnderstandingSea2127@reddit
Your GPU will likely be a limiting factor in 5 years, not CPU. Getting top of the line CPU seems like an overkill for 4070 super, but 9800x3d will work for your next GPU upgrade.
n7_trekkie@reddit
OR buy the new $200 CPU when you do your next CPU upgrade. that would be analogous to the 5700x3d today
n7_trekkie@reddit
7600 is good enough

I have been considering a new build in the back of my mind for a bit, but then I realized that 1) my PC is actually eight years old at this point and 2) I have paid nearly zero attention to anything in the hardware space over this entire time. I've heard vague rumors that AMD is currently a better idea than Intel, but outside of that I'm nearly at square one on this. Where should I look to get caught up to speed, and how can I know that I'm not making easily avoided bad decisions on pcpartpicker?
2ndFloosh@reddit
logicalincrements.com is a decent place to start.

Drop by /r/buildmeapc or /r/buildapcforme and ask them for a build.

Given the incoming tariffs, what level of currently-available GPU would you be comfortable using for the next 4 years for 1440P?
ZeroPaladn@reddit
7800XT, 7900GRE or higher from AMD.
RTX 4070 Super or higher from Nvidia.
Used options include 6800XT/6900XT/6950XT from AMD or RTX 3080 10G or higher from Nvidia.

I'm thinking of grabbing a 9800X3D tomorrow (if I can) and will need a mobo to go with it. I'll probably be getting a B650E, but chances are it will need a BIOS update for the new chip.
Should I try some kind of BIOS update for the B650E before I install the CPU? I've read a bit about it and see that it's possible, but I don't like that I have to do it "blind" without a display. Can I build the PC as usual first, with the 9800X3D installed in the mobo, then update the BIOS from the BIOS screen, or will the mobo fail to post with the newer CPU installed? I don't have an older AM5 CPU to use in the interim as I'm switching over from Intel.
n7_trekkie@reddit
You can install everything, but it may fail to post. In that case do the bios flash

I was wondering if anyone would able to help me out. I currently have an i5 7500 paired with GTX 1060 3GB and i have been looking at upgrading my CPU to i7 6700 or i7 7700. Does anyone have other recommendations or know what cpu I should look for. I know my pc is very outdated at this point but I don’t want to play the latest modern games, I would be looking at a new pc which I currently can’t.
ZeroPaladn@reddit
The problem with those CPUs is that even on the used market they cost nearly as much as it would to buy a used motherboard and CPU from something much more modern.
You don't need a whole new PC, but you can definitely look to used options like a R5 2600 or 3600 and B450 motherboard, or a i5 9600/10600 and associated board to get your CPU into better shape than any used one you can slide into your existing system.
Jackmac301@reddit
Would you say £40 would be a bad price to pick up one of those CPUs I mentioned?
But thank you for replying, I had been looking at some new motherboards and cpu so I’ll definitely check out the ones you’ve mentioned. If it’s worth waiting to get a new motherboard and cpu then that’s what I’ll do.
Thank you again for your reply :)
ZeroPaladn@reddit
I'm surprised you can find one for that little, but I don't think you'll get the improvements you're looking for from that chip (and combined with your 1060 3GB, you're already limited all-around for remotely new games outside of your CPU).
I think it's worth saving a bit more and chasing a 6-core platform to move to so your money puts in work for far longer than jumping to the outdated i7 would achieve.
Jackmac301@reddit
Okay yeah I’ll wait, I’ll be able to upgrade more in the future then too. Saves me a bit of money to put towards it :) thank you again

How is the PowerColor Fighter AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT 12GB GDDR6 Graphics Card? I saw it now on Amazon and it does t cost a lot. I wanted to buy a asus or msi rtx 4060. What should I buy?
ZeroPaladn@reddit
Those standard model cards do the job, and are priced to be competitive. It's 20% faster on average than the 4060 for cheaper than it. However, it's doesn't keep that lead in ray tracing and has a weaker upscaler. Up to you how you want to play this out: Get the cheaper, faster card or get the one with the bells and whistles?

I'm gonna be upgrading my GPU soon, going from an nvidia 2000 series to 4000 series.
Should I even do anything about the drivers? Can't I just plug the new card in and be done with it? I've never swapped GPUs without a full OS reinstall but as far as I know, nvidia uses the same drivers for all their modern cards, so it should be fine. Should I run DDU regardless?
AejiGamez@reddit
Just plug it in. But: unless you can afford a 4070 or better, do not buy a 40 series card. The 4060 is meh, and the 4060ti is total garbage (at least for gaming, and at the price they sell at)
YannBes@reddit
Honestly I wasn't even gonna upgrade but I got a 4080 super at a pretty good price and I can recoup some of the cost by selling my current card, so I just went for it.
I'll just plug it in and forget then, thanks for the help.

TemptedTemplar@reddit
Correct. The days of awesome black friday deals are unfortunately long gone.
Core components will go on sale through out the month and December, so take whatever deal you find!
Monitors, Speakers, keyboards, and other popular peripherals will probably see target discounts on black friday. But if you're looking at a specific model or for a certain feature set you may not see a super big discount on those.

Cool, thanks for the help :)

Is there a site with better search options for motherboards than PCPartPicker?
Context: I'm potentially getting a 9800X3D to upgrade an existing build, but the filters for motherboards are limiting. I have two PCI-E 1x capture cards that I want in the build, but there's no way to set a total PCI-E slots needed (I don't care if the extra two are 1x, 4x, 8x, or 16x, they would all be compatible). Additionally, there is no way to specify the distance between slots. Ex: My current Gigabyte Aorus Master X570 has the 8x slot far too close to the 16x slot to use it (have a MSI 4080 Super Ventus 3x).
I haven't even begun looking at reviews yet because it's grueling to sift through each motherboard manually. I just want to be able to specify 2 extra PCI-E slots that aren't less than a finger's width from my GPU's fan.
jamvanderloeff@reddit
PCPartPicker does do compatibility filtering for more things than it lets you pick manually, if you add something like a couple of ethernet cards into the list as placeholders it should filter out the boards without enough free slots for them.
Doctorgow@reddit
I don't really know of anything much other than PCPP but from the research that I have been doing over the past few months most of the motherboards over about 300 AUD (200 usd converted) have at least three pcie slots whereas almost everything under that only has two. Asus and msi from what I can tell usually have more pcie slots than other brands but it can vary a lot. Sorry I cant be more helpful but hopefully this can give you a bit of a starting point.

Can someone recommend a guild on setting up a new pc. I want someone that's gets into everything you should do in terms of setting, updates, windows adjustments, etc... for maximum gaming performance purposes.
mostrengo@reddit
Here is my list that should have you pretty well covered:
Anything else is either preference (other applications, customization, RGB), debatable (Win11 debloat scripts) or actively harmful (registry hacks).
Expert-b@reddit
Appreciate the write up. I was wondering able the debloat scripts. They sound great, but I don't know how effective they actually are. Also someone mentioned chipset drivers. I never heard about them before.
mostrengo@reddit
My concern about debloat scripts is not that they are ineffective, but rather that they are too effective, and especially nowadays, driven by a lot of any microsoft ideology and not pure performance. For example there are scripts out there to remove edge. Guess what, edge is integrated into Win11 and removing it will break your entire windows installation upon your next update.
That said, there are also some more tame ones. I don't have any particular recommnendation here (still on Win10) but just saying make sure you do plenty of research before letting one of them loose on your PC.
porncollecter69@reddit
Bought myself a 7800 XT, in the Amazon comments there is something about chipset if you don’t have that it doesn’t work. I used pc part picker and it didn’t show incompatibility issues. Am I fine?
AejiGamez@reddit
yeah you are. all you need is a capable power supply and a motherboard with a PCIe-slot. recently some msi employee said their board were incompatible with radeons, but thats BS made up to sell more geforce cards. that might have been the cause of that review
ManletOfManlets@reddit
My folks' PC just broke down after around 15 years. It was one of those $200 prebuilt PCs from BestBuy. I wanna get them a new PC but am not sure if building one is worth it or if I should simply get a prebuilt from Sam's Club or BestBuy. They also use a really crap monitor that I would also like to replace; it's as old as the PC was and built for ants.
Their daily activities on the PC is mostly just watching YouTube and dramas. Their old PC was a slug (took ages to boot-up and even opening apps took a few seconds) and I just want to get em something that at least runs at an acceptable pace. Taking any recommendations. Thanks.
