My mom went to dinner at a distant relative’s house and this was dessert

Brown sugar, sour cream, grapes. She said it was good.
itsmyfirsttimegoeasy@reddit
Hey, can I take a picture of this weird food you just gave me, cool.
ThePennedKitten@reddit
Tbf the bowl is so pretty I’d take a picture.
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
It’s so freaking cool, I would take a picture of it as well
SupernaturalPumpkin@reddit
My grandmother had those and I'm pretty sure she got them in the 70s. Glass pudding bowl or something or a jello bowl. I think.
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
Thank you - so far I haven’t been able to find something similar, but I’ll keep looking
(Well I have found a few similar, but not similar enough)
stinkykitty71@reddit
Try searching under vintage Viking pudding/dessert bowls. They have so many designs it might be one.
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
Thank you! I’ll try that
the-soggiest-waffle@reddit
Check in r/glasscollecting !
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
Oooh, thank you! I will
Slight_Tiger2914@reddit
Isn't that just a glob of brown sugar tossed on to some yogurt?
The grapes have sugar... Who NEEDS that much sugar for that?? A light Dusting of it would of be great and if it was nicely topped on the grapes vs.... wtf is this? Then use a spoon or fork to eat it
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
Idk about the dessert, it’s the bowl I find freaking cute
Slight_Tiger2914@reddit
Lol 😆 the bowl 👍🏿👍🏿
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
Thanks for the award, lol!
But yeah the bowl is so nice!
Response_Legitimate@reddit
Beautiful and nice
kelseydaniels@reddit
It’s a bold move to put a quarter cup of brown sugar atop anything … that being said, I’d try it 😂
galaxygothgirl@reddit
Is that... deconstructed cheesecake?
Albert_Borland@reddit
I love it
mega_dead_meme@reddit
Thought this came from r/shittyrestrictionfood at first
detahramet@reddit
Are you sure its not like, whipped cream? or créme fraiche?
Beatrixie@reddit
My mom has long made a jello mold thing that has fruit mixed in, and a layer of sour cream that you would never believe wasn't whipped cream. It's bizarre that it goes well together, and it tastes nothing like sour cream.
gilly_girl@reddit
Nope, sour cream's the proper ingredient. My mom used to make it and the flavors balance nicely.
captaincayuga@reddit
My aunt made a dessert that was strawberry jello, crushed pineapple, and walnuts sandwiching a thin layer of sour cream. It's really good and I don't like jello.
TheStatusIsN0tQuo@reddit
I have a Kid's Cookbook from the late 70s/early 80s that actually has a recipe like this with sour cream and grapes.
the_bananafish@reddit
Grape salad (sour cream, brown sugar, grapes) is still a popular holiday dish in the south
Psychological_Snow27@reddit
The south loves calling things salad that are in no way salad. I grew up with “carrot salad” - carrot shavings in orange Jell-o topped with almonds.
JwPATX@reddit
Ours had pineapple too/no almonds, and it was called “golden glow salad”
JonahHillsWetFart@reddit
pear salad is the perfect example of this
CosmicCreeperz@reddit
Those are salad. Salad has a much more broad definition, it isn’t just lettuce.
Ie can be:
“small pieces of food (such as pasta, meat, fruit, or vegetables) usually mixed with a dressing (such as mayonnaise) or set in gelatin.”
untoastedbrioche@reddit
like they said, it's a cultural difference. also idk where you got your definition but several Google searches and I've yet to find jello a ingredient in salad.
but yes, pasta salad is tossed in oils. egg salad is tossed in mayo. fruit salads are tossed in vinaigrette and lettuce based/spinach salads are tossed in anything.
never heard of a jello salad. I've heard of nasty shit like meat jello and seafood jello from the early 1900s when everyone was obsessed with jello though.
CosmicCreeperz@reddit
My definition was the top dictionary result for “salad”.
And Really?? Fruit salads are salads. They often have it. Top results for “salad jello”:

Kyzelle@reddit
You've never heard of ambrosia salad?
thedrinkalchemist@reddit
It’s available as a side at a few mom and pop places in KY and I always order it, it’s delicious, and I hate that it’s so tasty lol
grimmigerpetz@reddit
Dont know how it is in the US. But unseasoned sour cream is just inbetween creme fraiche and cream cheese. But the brown sugar is just strange.
OopsyDaisy5378@reddit
It sounds weird, but sour cream and brown sugar is an amazing combo. Especially with strawberries!
TheTesselekta@reddit
I mean, sour cream tastes a lot like Greek yogurt, which is very good sweetened. The sour/tart from the cream and grapes + sweet molasses of the brown sugar sounds like it would be pleasant.
10001110101balls@reddit
What's wrong with sour cream? It's a hair removed from greek yogurt, seems like it would be good here if not the best plating.
LOUDPACK_MASTERCHEF@reddit
if my greek yogurt had hair in it I would probably shop somewhere else. That's a little too greek for me
deepfield67@reddit
It's all Greek for me!
CaptainN_GameMaster@reddit
Don't pay attention to them, it's just a case of sour grapes
Windsdochange@reddit
Grapes of wrath.
DuckRubberDuck@reddit
TIL creme fraiche and sour cream isn’t the same. You can only buy sour cream in my country, there no such thing called sour cream or the equivalent translation, but you can buy creme fraiche with different fat content, from 9% up to 38% I think
DogPoetry@reddit
Honestly looks like ice cream
Neglected_Martian@reddit
Looks like sour cream
10001110101balls@reddit
Creme fraiche is a type of sour cream
Sunshine_McDoogle@reddit
So good with strawberries!
Adventurous_Boat7814@reddit
I’ve done this with strawberries and it’s good
_Freakazoidd_@reddit
My grandma used to make me this as a kid (smashed strawberries and sour cream with a dash of sugar) and I loved it. Used to be one of my favorite desserts.
TheDillestPickle2000@reddit
So fucking good. I bet this slaps
threeblackfeathers@reddit
Looks like it's supposed to be grape salad...which is oddly excellent. This is more of a deconstructed version it appears.
OurLadyAndraste@reddit
Yeah I have never made it like this, instead stirred together and with pecans, but grape salad is delicious. One of those things that seems kinda weird until you eat it.
threeblackfeathers@reddit
Same, usually topped with a brown sugar pecan mixture. I think it's typically in the church and funeral rotations so maybe not as well known 😆 First time I tried it was at a funeral.
Joyma@reddit
Very common to do with strawberries, I bet the grapes work too
bruxly@reddit
My family loved to dip strawberries in sour cream then brown sugar. I never acquired the taste for it but they love it and most people they had try it loved it as well. So this doesn’t seem that absurd but the ratio seems off, 2 grapes and a ton of sugar?
lustforwine@reddit
What’s the recipe called
royally_eft@reddit
Like most of the others, I think this would be good except for that looks like a MASSIVE amount of brown sugar.
Sk1rm1sh@reddit
Yeah, I think I'd mostly be tasting sugar with a full scoop of it like that.
royally_eft@reddit
Crunchyyyy
Sk1rm1sh@reddit
Healthy_Broccoli1927@reddit
Yeah there isn't usually that much, that's way over the top.
cookiedanslesac@reddit
I thought it was a biscuit, was the sugar already added or at your convenience ?
Roselinia@reddit
This is what I thought too. We make a similar looking thing here except it's cookies instead of brown sugar, and a mascarpone mix cream thing instead of just sour cream. It slaps
nnsntsxx@reddit
My husband made me try strawberries dipped in sour cream and brown sugar. I thought he was pulling my leg. Surprisingly good, but..wow what an interesting combo lol
tallorai@reddit
Swap out the grapes for strawberries and we used to eat this all the time. Except wed just dip the strawb in the sour cream, followed by a dip in brown sugar
intergalactict00t@reddit
That’s actually really tasty. But that is a lot of brown sugar.
Artistic-Shame4825@reddit
Is this…brown sugar, sour cream, and grape in an edible glass dish? What do you eat? What DON’T you eat??
Tkuhug@reddit
Interesting
_MisterHighway_@reddit
All the comments about the brown sugar. You eat a little with each bite, and a tablespoon of light brown sugar is like 9g sugar and 35 calories according to eatthismuch(dot)com. For comparison, a fun size Snickers bar (also 9g sugar) is 80 calories. Cooking doesn't have to be mixed, it can be just ingredients. Hell, that's the big thing at those fancy restaurants anymore, tiny food you have to assemble yourself.
beth3436@reddit
The fuck? Is this a joke?
Yodzilla@reddit
The only thing shitty about this is the paltry amount of brown sugar your mom was served. She got ripped off.
be1izabeth0908@reddit
I make a carmelized grape tart and these are three of the ingredients. Not sure how it would be just raw like this, but I can attest that the potential is there.
obiwanmoloney@reddit
Am I losing my tiny mind or is this entire sub just happy to eat mouthfuls of brown sugar?!
Makabaer@reddit
It looks like a cookie to me. Something a bit like this: https://www.andronaco-shop.de/magazin/delicato/biscotti-deliziosi-die-wunderbare-welt-der-italienischen-kekse/ They would go with that very nicely. I've seen them as toppers for similar deserts.
Astro_Sloth@reddit
Seriously, it’s not like a little sprinkling, it’s a whole fucking ball of it lol
Educational_Month577@reddit
Don’t know why I wouldn’t be, if it was mixed with sour cream and fruit
obiwanmoloney@reddit
Well it would appear that there are two kinds of people 😅
Nonamebigshot@reddit
For real I feel like I'm talking crazy pills reading all these "looks delish!" Comments
Typography77@reddit
so it seems
decktheshrek@reddit
This actually looks good though. Beautiful presentation too.
legenduu@reddit
Its not shitty OP, you are the shitty one
Avalolo@reddit
Scoop of brown sugar is crazy
mpdity@reddit
This is a grape salad. And they ARE good. It’s why your mother said it was good. Simple foods are sometimes the tastiest.
What good does being so hateful towards FAMILY do you? Hate gets you nowhere. Other than here making fun of a genuinely heartfelt, delicious, and clearly made with love treat.
Sad way to live if you ask me.
Ladyughsalot1@reddit
This is super 70s. My aunt would serve this as a poolside snack.
saladmunch2@reddit
That looks tasty but why so much brown sugar.
Fast_Avocado_5057@reddit
Bruh - this person obviously took time and effort to present it well and your moms said it was good. What kinda degenerate blasts their own fam like that?
chahud@reddit
Maybe I just don’t understand this sub but this sub isn’t shitty food it’s shitty food porn. The food porn is shitty not the food. Posting something here doesn’t mean it’s bad food. I’d 100% try it but come on that’s some shitty food porn
seandamon211pgh@reddit
For real. Looks like some high level Shit I would never get served.
obiwanmoloney@reddit
A straight up ball of brown sugar??
For sure they’ve presented it nicely but fuck no.
AtroposMortaMoirai@reddit
Yeah that’s a shit tonne of brown sugar. Could have just dusted the sour cream or like tossed the grapes for a light coating.
Beautifly@reddit
You must be new here
_RandyRandleman_@reddit
that would literally take a minute to make
trinier101@reddit
People do this w strawberries dip in sour cream roll in brown sugar - it is actually good too
chatsgirl64@reddit
I love to eat strawberries or peaches with sour cream and brown sugar. Try the combination, it’s delicious. We used to take strawberries, dip them in sour cream, then in brown sugar and eat them off the stem. Yummy.
Educational_Month577@reddit
Yes that’s how I have always done it, with the dipping as opposed to putting it in a bowl like this, and with strawberries instead of grapes. Gotta try with peaches
Educational_Month577@reddit
We do this with strawberries. It’s a favorite of mine
cowboydogcollar@reddit
Awww but there was much effort put into the plating
touchpaulbellini@reddit

PhinsFutureSB-Champs@reddit
Bad version of grape salad
ParadiseSold@reddit
It's even better with strawberries
Grimalkinnn@reddit
It’s like a deconstructed grape salad and I love this idea.
misstiffie@reddit
It’s pretty but omg so much sugar
Microwaved-toffee271@reddit
That’s… an entire lump of brown sugar?
Other than that, seems good
Slight_Tiger2914@reddit
What the hell kind of crap is that?...
I think that's worth just pushing away and saying no 😭 🫷🏿 Thank you, I'm on Keto Diet.
Dramatic_Plankton463@reddit (OP)
I’m not trying to hate btw! My mom said it tasted good, and the bowl it was served in is so cute. Just the totally unmixed ingredients (a glob of brown sugar, a glob of sour cream, grapes) was really unusual to me so thought I’d share on here.
Big_Tap_1561@reddit
Is that a full scoop of brown sugar?
Appropriate-Ad-3498@reddit
I respect where they were going with the flavor combinations, but I'd rather be buried alive than serve guests a haphazard blop of sour cream and a miniature brown sugar sand dune atop halved grapes in a dish from 1971.
SuperAdaGirl@reddit
OMG… someone is still making this recipe from the 70s?!?!
Hawt_Dawg_II@reddit
I'm surprised she didn't break out the jell-o
orphen888@reddit
Brown sugar. Sour cream. And grapes? Umm
ok-girl@reddit
It is good
Upper_Ladder6028@reddit
Yep. Good ol grape salad. I always mix mine and add walnuts
Pixie-82@reddit
Honestly this looks pretty tasty, the bowl is cute too.
Nonamebigshot@reddit
Is that a giant lump of brown sugar on top?
keIIzzz@reddit
I don’t really like green grapes but I could see how this could work. Maybe less brown sugar though, that seems like a lot with the ratio
InternationalTwo4581@reddit
This looks good, I'd try it
OrangeClyde@reddit
I don’t think this is shitty looking 🧐
cryingidiot@reddit
i want that bowl omg
indirosie@reddit
Me too it's amazing
ChrisLS8@reddit
First glance thought it was Kiwi, molasses cookie and whipped cream
The_scobberlotcher@reddit
thats BS
PawnWithoutPurpose@reddit
Very old school
greenteaandyellowtea@reddit
Switch the sour cream with cream cheese and you basically got a grape salad. Don’t hate until you try it.
MustTakeFlight@reddit
What the HELL these aren’t chicken nuggets I cant eat this shit
Violette3120@reddit
How is this shitty? This is delicious, man. It’s sold in my city as a popular dessert.
Jeramy_Jones@reddit
Okay; devils advocate here, there are good fruit salads which have a dressing made with sour cream and sugar. But serving it deconstructed like this is really weird and I’d think the proportion of sugar to…everything else…is not ideal.
wowpepap@reddit
what part of this is shitty?
kokopelliorca@reddit
I mean, I get the flavor combo they're going for; but, if they sprung for Greek yogurt and honey we wouldn't be here.
DeadBabyBallet@reddit
Is that sliced grapes with sour cream and brown sugar? What the actual fuck.
astrithr81@reddit
That actually looks pretty good...
DaddyIssuesIncarnate@reddit
Tbh doesn't even look that bad
Willing_Address_7634@reddit
I would be so amused if someone served me this, it’s dainty and peculiar, I’d feel like I’m at a fairy party.
bingbongboobies@reddit
So if you roll a strawberry in sour cream and then roll it I'm brown sugar it seriously tastes like cake. I bet this is like that.
HairyStyrofoam@reddit
BrickTechnical5828@reddit
Dunno looks good to me
Particular_Owl_8568@reddit

bimjob23@reddit
Brown sugar sliced grapes and whipped cream?
BloodAndTsundere@reddit
I’ve never had this but it sounds good
WorkingSea8918@reddit
Yeah, that's not shitty.
_portia_@reddit
This looks delish
Gloomy-Restaurant-42@reddit
Usually when you mix sour with grapes, you just end up with a pissy Greek fox.
Spirited-Resident889@reddit
Hephaestus? I mean it fits and I assume he probably has grey hair from all the shenanigans Aphrodite pulls. Ain't no God ugly on the human scale puh-lease.
dubiouscontraption@reddit
Is that brown sugar on greek yogurt on grapes? Kinda sounds good. If you can get past the grittiness.
Jojosbees@reddit
It’s sour cream.
GentrifriesGuy@reddit
Not shitty.
mkstot@reddit
Was there a vegetable aspic served as well, or maybe one of those salmon en crute with the pastry in the shape of a fish with scales too?
dzh@reddit
Somehow that looks warm and lovely
gimmeluvin@reddit
I would have laughed out loud.... like I just did
AffectionatePoet4586@reddit
I won’t say what that looks like. I know it’s a tasty combination.
ekhendren@reddit
I would try that.
