real vikings don't wear PFD's
eotty@reddit
Real vikings do, source: im a viking and i always wear PFDs
AnarZak@reddit
clearly not
bc13317@reddit
does this boat go upwind well/at all?
doned_mest_up@reddit
That was my first thought here, too! I thought upwind wasn’t happening until the advent of triangular sails and keel, but it looks like you should be able to tack about as poorly as I do with triangular sails and keel using this boat.
framblehound@reddit
The Viking ships couldn’t do this with their sails
ppitm@reddit
What?
framblehound@reddit
Viking ships could only adjust the braces (equivalent to a boom) about 45 degrees off the line perpendicular to centerline of the boat. They couldn’t close-haul them this much
You only said “what” so I assumed you were asking for some clarification or more information. If you need more, feel free to look it up
ppitm@reddit
What are you talking about? They could do exactly what you are seeing in the video.
Everything we know about Norse seafaring comes from reconstructions like this, informed by archaeology and experimentation. There are no written sources saying silly things like "bracing angles in excess of 45 degrees are forbidden by Odin."
pbmonster@reddit
That's not really necessary, junk ships in southeast Asia had square tanja sails or square junk rigs, and leeboards or centerboards. They probably went upwind as early as 500 AD.
pennblogh@reddit
Try sailing a well-trimmed lugger you will be very surprised.
pheitkemper@reddit
While not as pointy as modern boats, square rigged ships couldn't sail very high because their rigging kept them from turning the yards to a higher angle. As you can see here, that's not as much of a concern.
canadiankris@reddit
Better than most people think in fact.
edson2000@reddit
Sailing is great 👍 5 out or 5 stars 🌟 but raping and pillaging not so much anymore. Probably 0-5 star rating.
eotty@reddit
I found the englishman.
Drazurh@reddit
Is there a longer video with tacking and whatnot?
Andreas1120@reddit
how are you steering?
ozsat@reddit (OP)
It has a rudder and tiller similar to modern boats. Part of the tiller is visible in the video.
nixtalker@reddit
do they have keel like modern boats?
ozsat@reddit (OP)
This one does not have a keel.
Material-Pollution53@reddit
sailcontrols are overrated anyway, who needs em
ppitm@reddit
?
Material-Pollution53@reddit
lines that help shape (and therefore improve efficiency of) your sail
ppitm@reddit
Square sails have more control lines than any other sail. Although this one is simplified.
Material-Pollution53@reddit
I guarantee its less efficient than my laser
framblehound@reddit
My sport kite is faster than your laser, and so is my car
Material-Pollution53@reddit
my nuts are more inside your moms mouth, and I'm also faster
Overall_Midnight_119@reddit
This is very cool. Thanks for posting it. Square sail is appealing. One sail just like a cat boat.
jibberdoo@reddit
Out of curiosity, what’s the top speed on a boat like this?
ppitm@reddit
Some midsize Norse reconstruction boats have semi-planing hulls. They have broken 15 kts which is way over hullspeed. Basically very lightweight sailing canoes.
No-Weakness-2035@reddit
Woah!
LeAdmin@reddit
What the hell does authentic replica mean lol
canadiankris@reddit
Built traditionally without modern materials, else it’s just a replica
psychedelicdonky@reddit
Is this from alsund in southern Denmark?
ozsat@reddit (OP)
No, it’s from Aarhus.
psychedelicdonky@reddit
Looks very similar and there has been a lot of viking boat sailing through. Still a beautiful view
johnatsea12@reddit
What kind of speeds did you get
ozsat@reddit (OP)
Probably 4-5 kts upwind, but there are no modern instruments onboard to measure it.
Gullintani@reddit
Any mobile phone can tell you.

Yar
n3w1ight@reddit
That's awesome. A real dream. Wish I could come aboard once 🫶
Good waves for you 🌊

Goto Roskilde in Denmark and book a tour
lucidone@reddit
I feel like "authentic replica" is something from a George Carlin bit, like "jumbo shrimp."
lawfulmalfeasance@reddit
Lol yes! Sometimes I read things in Carlin’s voice for just this reason
Kattorean@reddit
Fabulous!
WasterDave@reddit
Right on the border between awesome and terrifying.
