am i crazy? i did it with a 36 footer and it was a pain. sight side is the only way to do this. no was to go passed and turn around, and backing in from the street isn’t really an option unless you wanna block 4 lanes of busy traffic
Dekster123@reddit
Based on the average width of car parking spots being between 8-9ft, and those vehicles being compact or mid sized sedans. I'd say that trailer in the photo is about 36ft. You'd have to start your turn while backing in from a real sharp angle. Seeing as all those dumpsters and shit are just thrown around hap hazardly I can definitely sympathize with the difficulty backing into that space.
I'll be another radio Rambo and come out and say that I'd be able to do that too, but I'm not going to act like I'd slip it in first shot. Alot of people on here act like something like this isn't nearly as difficult as it is. I have a post like this that I made a while back and I got pretty mixed answers regarding the back in.
Also, horse shit, they do not get 53fters in there "all the time" laughable honestly.

that’s what i’m saying. i mean, MAYBE 48 footers, but that would be really pushing it. as for all the people saying it’s doable with a 53…idk man. i think they’re insane lmao
Silver-Tea-8769@reddit
Don't feel guilty about backing right up over that curb/grassy area if need be.
ViolinistLivid1856@reddit
Maybe I’m seeing it differently but I don’t see why there would be an issue backing in there..
freightliner_fever_@reddit (OP)
how would you have approached it
sudrama@reddit
Start where the truck is. Key is hug the left side and curb as much as possible so when you straighten out the tractor it doesnt hit the southern curb which is the only thing making it hard. The left side ( looking at the picture straight head on) seems plenty of space but get out and look to make sure no one comes into that space since it will be blind side for the trucker.
freightliner_fever_@reddit (OP)
that’s exactly what i did. the issue i kept running into while i was there what that there were cars parked by those trees at the bottom of the picture. also, there’s a fence infront of those dumpsters. kind of by the bottom of the circle. i probably should’ve taken a picture of it while i was there cause the obstacles aren’t visible on satellite view
Rackcauser@reddit
This is one of those backs where you have to let the trailer steer itself for 80% of the backing. Just gently encourage it with some right steering a little bit at a time and then once the trailer is around the curve, you can shimmy shimmy cocopuff the cab.
freightliner_fever_@reddit (OP)
yup. that’s what it was too. slow and steady lol.
Comfortable-Mix-873@reddit
Yeah, I agree. You have to get your setup 100% perfect because you can’t adjust by jacking.
VicariousPanda@reddit
That's obscene in an already comically right location. Imagine a newer driver attempting this.

Am I missing something? This looks like a pretty easy back.
freightliner_fever_@reddit (OP)
it is much smaller in person
PeakNo6892@reddit
That's what she said

Look at that's guys profile. He's just a ship poster/troll.

Idk maybe I’ve just done too many backs into some bullshit dock off a busy road so I need two people stopping traffic while another guy stands behind the truck on the phone with me and guides my trailer into an ally that’s 9ft wide and at least three other idiots are back there yelling and waving their hands and the client is off to the side somewhere smoking a cigarette and messaging my boss about how bad of a driver I am because it took me 12 minutes to back in there.

Simple fix just stop delivering there. They will get the message. Until your company unfucks itself we won’t deliver here!
lord_nuker@reddit
I might be built differently, but i dont see any issue from the overhead photo
Telo712@reddit
This looks like a normal dock
MajorHymen@reddit
Looks like it would suck but it’s possible. I delivery to a few Home Depot’s that are similar. They have more space but everything is blocked by all the crap they leave out so the area here is what you have to work with. You have to set up perfectly but just enough room to get it in.
aJaxtheProtector@reddit
Yeah, from the aerial shot this looks pretty “easy”. I’m sure on the ground I’d be having a mental breakdown though 🤷♂️
Wheelman519@reddit
Don’t get a job delivering to grocery stores. You will be on Reddit every other delivery.
freightliner_fever_@reddit (OP)
this isn’t a grocery store and i don’t deliver groceries. this is a retirement home and i haul lumber
Wheelman519@reddit
Yeah, the point is that looks like a ton of room. I guess when I see people posting that uppercase/lower case shit suggesting the people who say the quote are stupid… or lying… and then I see this satellite view shot.. plus you say “unless you wanna block 4 lanes of busy traffic” I’m just shaking my head. Like that’s your job bud, to figure it out. When people told me “we get 53 footers in here all the time” I decide “well I’m not gonna be the bitch who can’t” and do it.
Slater_8868@reddit
LTL driver here.
I would hit that up from the sight side or blind side. Both look like they have plenty of room, but from google maps it looks easier doing it blind side, because you don't have all of the parked cars and dumpsters and BS to deal with on the sight side. You'd have to find somewhere to spin around and back down that driveway to set up the blind side approach. I'm also doing it in a day cab, not a sleeper. But I have to deal with way worse ridiculous stops all day long, and constantly hear the "we get big trucks in here all of the time" line.
Coyote-Morado@reddit
That's a textbook alley dock. You literally have to do one to get your CDL.
jaekofalltrades@reddit
Depends on the state I suppose, when I got my cdl several years ago alley docking wasn’t part of the test.
Adventurous-Koala-36@reddit
maybe the pic isn’t doing you justice, OP. But it looks like you could’ve nosed in a bit coming from the left side and came out the hole to set up?
freightliner_fever_@reddit (OP)
yeah that’s what i did and it was fine. but i had a 36 footer. the guy said they do it with 53s and i just don’t think its possible.
Adventurous-Koala-36@reddit
Shoot, I’ll take your word for it! I certainly don’t need to find out for myself 😂
jmzstl@reddit
Retirement homes were always a pain in the ass for one reason or another. I'd be happy to run it from where that truck is parked as long as there's no elevators involved.
CumminOnOnionRings@reddit
