After 30 years of boot licking and rip jobs to management, they finally made me a Senior VP
Posted by 967milesfromnowhere@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 261 comments
New salary is $85,000. I share my secretary with only 3 other executives (1:4 instead of 1:8). I have a window in my office (view is of the parking structure mostly, but I can see a few tree tops of the landscaping in between the office tower and the parking structure and today I saw some squirrels and a couple birds). I even got a reserved spot on the subterranean level of the garage. This means I don’t have to use the gates to go up and park with the clerical staff and underlines.
Things are looking up. I haven’t felt this good since the Sega Genesis came out and I had my first Bloomin’ Onion at Outback.
I think it’s all going to work out.
Whitey1969SC@reddit
Are you missing a 1 in the beginning of the salary?
blackpony04@reddit
OP's post history shows that he's 40 and last made $335k while spending $15-20k per month on his 4 kids he hauls around in a minivan.
No saying OP is a liar...but I'm saying HE'S A PHONY! A BIG FAT PHONY!
One_Hour_Poop@reddit
There's something not right going on here...
OutdoorRaleigh@reddit
What it is ain't exactly clear. We better stop. Whats that sound. Everybody take a look around
xczechr@reddit
We're Gen X, the term is poser.
ScarletCarsonRose@reddit
I’m not saying he’s a fake or not. But after reading this thread, it’s obvious some of y’all have no contact with people who work in education lol… cry
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
RIght? I'm a college professor and I know lots of people with Ph.D.s and 20+ years of experience who make <$80,000 still.
Whitey1969SC@reddit
Unfortunately academia doesn’t pay
pm_me_bra_pix@reddit
So you're saying all the teachers telling me I'd "be a good teacher" were trying to set me up to fail?
Joke's on them, I regularly got Cs and Ds all through school.
Whitey1969SC@reddit
A teacher is the right states make you a millionaire by 55. If you look at the data. A large percentage of millionaires in the United States are former career long teachers. The first half is low pay. The second half is much more of a salary commiserate to the amount of education and experience they have.
u35828@reddit
But hey, they have tenure, right?
ScarletCarsonRose@reddit
Haha, bring in the adjuncts. Make $5000 teaching a class that students collectively paid $30,000. No benefits. No office. No tenure track 🤪
Whitey1969SC@reddit
$5000 where that at. My wife adjuncts online. $1800 at one school. $3000 at another. Both well know university’s
BanDelayEnt@reddit
Steph Curry is making $65 million this year to play basketball.
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
That used to be what we told ourselves, but it doesn't mean much anymore...
ZugZugYesMiLord@reddit
That's kinda sorta expected in education.
But SVP in the private sector is a step away from C suite.
BanDelayEnt@reddit
Or book publishing.
Whitey1969SC@reddit
Is this a post from 1987?
dfjdejulio@reddit
The sure giveaway is the use of the word "secretary". When was the last time you heard someone actually called that?
(I actually was one, in 1986. My summer job between high school and college was as a word processing temp secretary for Kelly Services.)
EddieLeeWilkins45@reddit
wow, Kelly Services is a total throwback.
dphilwood@reddit
I was also a secretary with Kelly and various other temp agencies. I lived just outside NYC and aspired to be Melanie Griffith in Working Girl.
dfjdejulio@reddit
I lived in NYC! My main gig was a block off Wall Street.
dphilwood@reddit
I loved to the city from Union NJ when I was a 19 but started temping a year earlier. I’d take NJTransit with my dad and I worked on Wall St a lot. I was just telling my 16yo the other day how I worked at the IBM Copier Showroom and thought I was so cool! I also did time at the WTC answering phones for investment traders and shit.
TheDreamWoken@reddit
Aren’t they called executive assistants
dfjdejulio@reddit
I also see "administrative assistant" or "office admin".
14LabRat@reddit
Kelly-Girls!
dfjdejulio@reddit
Yep! I was a teenaged Kelly Girl! Even though I'm a cis het dude.
gardendesgnr@reddit
Nah just from Floriduh!
Seriously I haven't made that low a salary since early 2000's but right now my husband a 15 yr senior PM and executive Principal Engineer can't find work for the last 2 yrs w even that pay in Orlando!
salty_gemini74@reddit
Lmao
One_Hour_Poop@reddit
I'm thinking a 0 at the end, 850k.
967milesfromnowhere@reddit (OP)
$85k. I’m grossing $3,270 biweekly now. It’s kind of crazy. We all got a bonus last year too (they hired out a bowling alley and everyone got two drink coupons). A couple of us went out for burgers after and the Sr VP I went with picked up the tab! That’s me this year! I get to pay for others and expense it!
Whitey1969SC@reddit
I have to ask what actually industry is this
Unsteady_Tempo@reddit
85k wouldn't be unusual for a small to medium size charitable non-profit, especially in a low to medium cost of living city. It wouldn't be unusual to need 20+ years of relevant experience and several degrees.
Whitey1969SC@reddit
My significant other is a public school teacher and makes a lot more then that
Michellenjon_2010@reddit
Maybe you should ask your S.O to explain the difference in then vs. than 🫤
hermitzen@reddit
Not just VP. SVP. My nephew right out of college is making way more than that.
Gourmeebar@reddit
Not the bowling alley. You are definitely big time!! but why are you bragging and making the rest of us feel bad.
967milesfromnowhere@reddit (OP)
Sorry, brother. I’ll go back to Sonic & Knuckles.
deepasleep@reddit
Senior VP should probably be a 2...
wotupfoo@reddit
I was thinking a zero at the end. Senior vp in corporate America is in the stratosphere.
Dramatic-Respect2280@reddit
Meh. Not so much. Throw a stick in a town hall meeting in any corporate office and you’ll likely hit a VP or Sr VP. You got marketing VPs, Scientist VPs, Operations VPs, Finance VPs, Legal VPs, and so on. They make significant $$$, sure, but their real money is less salary and more stocks, bonuses and RSUs.
donakvara@reddit
So true. Stock options as pay is an issue we have heard about a lot but hasn't really sunk in. Ugh, gross.
wotupfoo@reddit
Right. I said Senior VP. There is a stark difference between getting vp and snr vp at least in the top tech 50 in the USA.
KurtAZ_7576@reddit
I was gonna say...SVP with an $85k salary?
blacklab@reddit
Senior VP, should be a 4
analyticaljoe@reddit
You think OP is a peasant?
Whitey1969SC@reddit
What are you insinuating?
redtesta@reddit
Was going to say same thing
sunqueen73@reddit
Hell,in my circles that would be a 4 he's missing. Smh
Socalwarrior485@reddit
I was going to say, it would have a 3 in front of it where I work.
mothraegg@reddit
I feel bad because my son and his wife both make more than him, and they're in their early 30s.
ruth862@reddit
I feel bad because me working two jobs and my wife working two jobs don’t make what OP makes. FML
mothraegg@reddit
I'm sorry. It really sucks out there.
Techchick_Somewhere@reddit
Was going to ask this too. 🤣😬
Moody_GenX@reddit
Has to be a small company. My mother was making more than triple that as a senior VP her first year in that position. But that was with one of the biggest tech companies in the world.
Astro74205@reddit
you mean a 2.
Three3Jane@reddit
In big tech? Throw an 8 in front of that 85k. :-|
Turbulent_Tale6497@reddit
Maybe a 2 or a 0?
zoot_boy@reddit
I hope so..
w1r2g3@reddit
I was thinking the same.
Coralies_Dad@reddit

Hey, I started out mopping the floor. But now... now I'm washing lettuce. Soon I'll be on fries; then the grill. In a year or two, I'll make assistant manager, and that's when the big bucks start rolling in.

What industry is this? Non profit or a company with 10 people? Hard to imagine svp making 85k.

1985 called. I run payroll. That was SR vP pay then.

SVP @ $85k? Work there a year then go to a different company and double your salary

VirginiaBluebells@reddit
Did you start working when you were 9? Because you’ve made numerous other posts stating you are 39. I can’t imagine ANYWHERE in the US, even non-profits, paying a senior VP 85k.
One_Hour_Poop@reddit
Huh. Good call. Maybe OP was a paper boy and includes that as part of his actual work history.
Groovy66@reddit
I’m permanent work from home and typing this in my joggers and sweatshirt here in the UK
Congrats brother. Keep on keeping on x
967milesfromnowhere@reddit (OP)
Alright then. It’s not so bad. At least I get to drive my car in and park in the garage so I don’t have to deal with the train (and the train strikes). I can also use having to drive home as an excuse to get out of dinners and after work drinks! It’s pretty boss!
mlill@reddit

Forsexualfavors@reddit
I'll just put here that 85k a year to someone without student loans is a lot different than 85k with. You may be able to live comfortably on that salary if you aren't paying 1300 a month. Don't get sick either.
Forsexualfavors@reddit
A lot of people I work with are doing well because they didn't go to college. I think that's a shame, and it's a symptom of why I have to wake up tomorrow and wonder if the golden grifter gets to pardon himself
