Love this movie! This started my crush on River Phoenix.
Funny_Editor5152@reddit
I grew up in FL, a county or two away from where he supposedly lived with his parents (Palm Beach?), so I would irrationally look for him in an adjacent car anytime we traveled on I95 in that direction. Obsessed much? Yeah. Alas, I did not manifest hard enough.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Because he lived on a nudist compound in a crazy cult until he and Joaquin got out.
Funny_Editor5152@reddit
Oooh...Juicy! I didn't hear that but I would have believed it after Running on Empty.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Yea, his whole family did. They had some loony loony loony parents.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
I've been to the spot in front of the Viper room.
fgreen68@reddit
I sat next to Samantha Mathis (an actress) in my Spanish class in high school. She was supposedly dating him and with him the night he died.
My friends and I used to go to the viper room every so often in college too. Growing up in West LA in the 70's and 80's was wild.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
I know Samantha, she was Nora on Pump up the Volume.
GracieThunders@reddit
Loved that movie
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
TALK HARD!
Salty-Lemonhead@reddit
I’m still not over his death or Freddie Mercury’s
spidermans_mom@reddit
I’m with you.
Effective-Being-849@reddit
I was walking down that street not knowing where I was and felt compelled to STOP for no reason I could explain. Looked around and realized I was on the spot. 😭😭😭
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
We did a bus tour around LA, and got off around the Whiskey and the Viper room to look around. Got back on about an hour later.
Eastern-Ad-5253@reddit
River Will always be My Ultimate Teenage Crush then Matt Dillion!!! Then Simon Le Bon. Seriously I could have seen myself with a guy like River Phoenix😊
decemberpsyche@reddit
It started mine on Wil Wheaton.
PixelTreason@reddit
And mine on Corey Feldman!
PatchWorkFlower@reddit
Mine too! I was crushed when he died.
TakeOnMe-TakeOnMe@reddit
Halloween 1993, right? I remember exactly where I was when it was announced. He was my only ever real teen heartthrob but I did have the entire cast of Stand by Me on my wall.
CatsEatGrass@reddit
I actually wrote him a fan letter. I was soooo in love!
HamboneBanjo@reddit
I wrote a letter to Alanis Morisette. Included my home number and everything. I was sixteen or seventeen at the time.
Upbeat-Selection-365@reddit
Weird sexualization of River Phoenix with the open shirt. What is he like 14?
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
He was raised in a nudist colony by crazy parents.
MobileLocal@reddit
All the kids here have such weird/sad stories from this time. They’re so young. 😕
VacationBackground43@reddit
Vern and Gordy too?
MobileLocal@reddit
Wil talks about his childhood openly. And is no-contact with his family. As I understand.
Strait-outta-Alcona@reddit
Seen this when it came out in theatres. After reading the book.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
And what did you think after reading the novella first?
I was like that with all the Potter books and movies.
Strait-outta-Alcona@reddit
The movie was semi accurate, but not as detailed as the novel of course.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
I read it after, and while I liked it and the more graphic scenes, I still prefer the movie.
Strait-outta-Alcona@reddit
The choice of actors was spot on.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Especially Ace. I tried to see him from King's description, but all I could picture was Kiefer.
Strait-outta-Alcona@reddit
Kiefer . Either you like him or you don’t. Just like Donald.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
I love him in everything, he's such a shitheel. Donald can play the jovial role from time to time. Notably A Time to Kill.
oscar-the-bud@reddit
No Ace, just you.
losthalo7@reddit
Best line in a good movie.
oscar-the-bud@reddit
Also the last line about never having as good of friends as when you were 12 years old.
KungFoo_Wombat@reddit
Yes! I mean Stephen King really is insightful! It is actually at the beginning of the book/novella.
CardMechanic@reddit
I think it works better at the and of the movie. We can all relate to “friends forever” that seemingly dissipate into The Mist.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Yup. Of all my friends growing up, I have one left, and we talk like once a month, but we still connect like it was old times.
CardMechanic@reddit
I’m going to a funeral on Sunday for my high school best friend. We relocated across the country and ended up only a couple of hours from each other so I saw him at least infrequently.
But mental illness is a helluva thing. Driving 10 hours back to our hometown is going to be wild. Memories. Etc.
Will miss him. The memory of this movie and the feels has me tearing up.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Sorry to hear that friend, I wish you well.
CardMechanic@reddit
Thanks
Adventurous-Brain-36@reddit
Jesus, does anyone?
legojohn@reddit
Roland Deschain approves this line.

I have absolutely no idea what this is.

dfjdejulio@reddit
Thank you.
Cats-n-Chaos@reddit
I clearly remember the day he died
Sean_theLeprachaun@reddit
And somehow Vern ended up with a model.
Thirty_Helens_Agree@reddit
He and Rebecca Romijn have roles on current Star Trek shows that are set about 100 years apart. There’s a fun scene where O’Connell’s character refers to Romijn’s character as the “hottest first officer in Starfleet history.”
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
You mean Disco and SNW?
Thirty_Helens_Agree@reddit
Lower Decks and SNW.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Gotcha.
Sean_theLeprachaun@reddit
Numero Una.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Good for him man.
Bundt-lover@reddit
That’s one of the Stephen King-isms that made its way into my vocabulary at an early age. Others include “You’re so full of shit, your eyes are brown!” and “You’re a poet and you don’t know it”.
Edward_the_Dog@reddit
I've been using this my whole life. I guess I forgot I picked it up from a King book!
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
My mom would say to me in the seventies and eighties.
Bundt-lover@reddit
To be clear, I’m sure he didn’t make it up, but it shows up in several of his books and I know I definitely got it from there.
CitizenChatt@reddit
Which Jon Favereau ran with in Swingers ---- "you're so money and you don't even know it"

USNWoodWork@reddit
Just rewatched this on Netflix. It’s so good. Too bad the rest of the family’s attention span can no longer handle a 2 hour movie.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
What country are you in that it's on Netflix?
USNWoodWork@reddit
Japan. I think I’m VPN’d to the US though.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
I haven't hooked my Netflix to my Surfshark.

itsnotmysandwich@reddit
This flick is a classic. IDK how many times I've watched it. Such a talented young cast plus Dryfus is my guy.
Apprehensive_Glove_1@reddit
Memory unlocked
Back in the late 80's, some friends and I were going to hang out at the lake but the dad with the boat's car crapped out and we wound up having to walk several miles to one of the other kid's houses to call for pickups and such.
During that trip, we 4 boys recited this entire movie word for word.
Responsible_Claim_91@reddit
Just watched it. Still brings a tear to the eye...such a great movie and I love Dreyfus' voice as narrator.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Drey fus made the movie. His dulcet tones leading us through the tale were so comforting. Great choice from Reiner.
Realistic-Debate1594@reddit
What about Bob?
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Yea, he was in that one too, thanks for your contribution. We're talking about Stand By Me.
PacRat48@reddit
I often forget that John Cusack is in this movie too

Mighty Mouse is a cartoon. Superman’s a real guy. There’s no way a cartoon could beat up a real guy.
wholeselfin@reddit
But what is Goofy?
pixelneer@reddit
Goofy’s a dog. He’s definitely a dog.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Can't be a dog, he wears a hat and drives a car.
CqwyxzKpr@reddit
And has had a child; therefore, fornicate. Max, hyuck
pixelneer@reddit
God. That’s weird. What the hell is Goofy?
MorpheusZzzz@reddit
No. We're all dead.
Self-Comprehensive@reddit
I was around the same age as the kids in this movie. My mom was really on the fence about renting it because it was rated R. I told her it had all her favorite songs. She rented it, we watched it, and when we returned the movie she asked if they had a copy we could buy. It became one of our favorite movies to watch together. We wore out that movie lol. We read the novella. We sang along with all the songs. We loved everything about it.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
I finally read it a couple minths ago in three hours during a power outage. Very good story, but I still prefer Reiners interpretation.
GraphicDesignMonkey@reddit
A pile of shit has a THOUSAND eyes!

I met Corey in northern California when he was filming the movie. He was hanging out at a water slide park. Nice guy. My mom worked at the hotel they all stayed at. She said there were some "interesting characters" in and out of their rooms. 😬
YellowMailbox_1975@reddit
The hardest scene for me is when Hwil is talking to his friends, since I didn't have any growing up. It's still the toughest part since I still don't have any friends
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit (OP)
Sorry bout that. I grew up in the largest trailer park in the county, and had a ten speed. We had cliques.

Nope.
