Jeez, I had to double check to make sure that’s not my aunt and uncle’s house. I actually helped replace their burnt-out fluorescent tubes cause they didn’t know how to do it. Half the lights were burnt out, I don’t know how long they were cooking in darkness.
I had one in a rental, it didn’t take up the entire ceiling but it’s the only place I’ve ever lived that had the feature.
My least favorite thing was that whoever did the reno didn’t size the openings quite right, because during nice weather if we had windows open sometimes the pressure change from the wind would suck a plastic panel out of the ceiling, which always broke. Had to go across town to the one Lowe’s that sold matching plastic panels.
haha those awful sunshine ceilings that always ended up with one of the fluorescent tubes flickering or not coming on and "oh you just need to let it warm up before you hit it with a broom". What was it even trying to be, rafters and cubicle office lighting?
Glad it went the way of the popcorn ceilings that came next.
Didn’t have it in my parents’ house but I remember seeing that monstrosity in the occasional visit to a friend’s place. Definitely a questionable design choice…
Yes, and they are so bright you can see every pore! Many 90s renovations got rid of those and horrifying popcorn ceiling.
70s — early 80s aesthetics, yikes

A friend’s place had one - they called it a California ceiling
SadAcanthocephala521@reddit
Yes, the house I bought 5 years ago had one, it was built in 87. I removed the drop ceiling as I hated it.

Other than the Dyson on the fridge it looks straight from the 80s
Do_it_My_Way-79@reddit
I genuinely thought this was a kitchen picture from 35-40 years until you pointed out the Dyson.
sonyisda1@reddit (OP)
Yea for sure the fridge itself is period correct. But the faucet looks to be "space age" like the dyson

Wonder how long it takes for the dead bugs to build up on those
Do_it_My_Way-79@reddit
The worst part to me was all the out of focus dead bugs you’d end up seeing through the diffused plastic sheets.

We had one on the farm. Nice light, horrible maintenance though. There was always a light to replace or broken tile.

Had that in the bathroom at my old house
Also had to clean the dead flies out once or twice a year

I grew up in a area where most of the houses were built in the late 70's - mid 80's. Many of friends had kitchen ceilings like this one.
